We know that not all of them are as terrible as this one, but the breeding, shipping(!), and selling (to anyone, no questions asked) for profit is cruel and should be stopped. Small mammals can be found at local shelters (call around your area). These animals also often come from terrible breeders bent on selling as many animals to these stores as possible, no matter the cost.

I don't have a say for Petco but as for "Petsmart stores ship sick, injured and unwanted(???) animals back to Sun Pet" that is bullsmack. Any animals with signs of illness that are shipped to the store are immediately told to take them back and report it. The pets are then quarantined for a period of time and if any show signs of illness they are immediately taken to the vet and given proper medicine until they are healthy enough to go to a caring home. "Unsellable" animals are adopted out btw.

PetSmart gets their small animals from LOCAL animal breeders, which are inspected and have to pass a strict certification..While this video is terrible, this is not a PetSmart "supplier". Animals are not shipped to PetSmart stores, it's all done locally for the most part. Sick and injured animals are taken to a Vet. The store then pays for the vet bills. Last week a sick bird had a $200 vet bill at my store, and we gladly paid it and saved it's life. We do this with all animals in our care.

I actually like petsmart and pet supplies plus because they`re employees were really helpful in supplying me with food that would work for my dogs sensitive stomach and food allergies. However, as much as I want to defend these major pet stores I just can`t believe that they are entirely ignorant of their suppliers abuse and neglect. If you promise your customers healthy pets and employees who care then why would you support a company that is so cruel to animals and then ship sick, injured, or unwanted animals back to their abusers? I find this to be quite upsetting. I actually applied for a pet care associate position at petsmart... after seeing this I`m calling to cancel my application as I can not support this. It`s their job to look into their suppliers to see where they can get the best quality and healthiest pets. Keeping animals in these conditions even temporarily are hazardous to mental and physical health. So I guess I`ll just be ordering my dog`s toys and accessories online from now on.

They have no where else to get there animals from. Its a wierd cycle
Pet suppliers starts of good and takes care of animals>more pet stores want more animals>supplier breeds more>eventually gets out of hand>leads to mistreatment of animals due to more employees who dont know how to handle pets.

cesar martinez that's really not an excuse. There are millions of homeless animals in shelters, and many pet stores take them in to sponsor them and split the money with the shelters. The petsmart where I live bring in shelter animals and dogs from local breeders. (Other animals I'm unsure of). I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying this is a pointless cycle not to mention an illegal one. I personally think that all pet stores should cooperate with local shelters to help animals find homes.

thank you to all the people who work on finding information about the way animals are treated thanks to this info. I will never buy a animal from these places, i believe thats a way to help animals because if people dont buy them they would not sell them specially if they are not treated with respect and if you buying from these companies make sure that they treat them right... love to you all...

It sucks that the pet stores ship the animals back when they are sick or injured, those people tortured the poor animals to death ☹😭

I got my hamster from petsmart YEARS ago, i was an innocent seven year old. Now, long after he died of old age, i saw what he went through before he arrived at petsmart.

I went to petsmart on Saturday and the zebra finches had no water, They were all sick and had no eyes, cuttlebone, or anything without any vet care. All of The bettas had ick and they dropped an angelfish on the floor 3 times and yelled "They are tough fish, it will live."

Not to play Devil's advocate or anything but I think it's wrong to blame the stores for the way the supplier is treating the animals. Both Petco and Petsmart support adoption of unwanted animals and take excellent care of the animals while they are living at the store. ANY animal that is sick at these stores receives veterinary care immediately. I think people who wish to crucify should look at the whole picture!

I'm not sure where you go, but I know the petsmart I work at is VERY strict about animal care. We are all very cautious about how we handle and treat all the animals. The parakeets are in very large, spacious cages as well as the finches and canaries. We clean the cages once or more times a week and water and food has to be changed and cleaned twice daily. We have managers who will fire anyone who doesn't adhere to these rules.

All right all right. There is a thing here though PETA. The animals that were pictured there are sold in volume at large chain pet stores nation wide. Mice breed constantly, you can't exactly keep their cages insanely clean, many are stored together because they are bred for feeding, lab testing and as pets. It doesn't take much to kill a mouse, so that didn't really shock me. The parakeets were fine, if they aren't hand raised they tend to go insane when you reach your hands inside to get them.

My boyfriend and I used to shop at Petsmart, but ever since we found out about PetSmart we stop shopping there. If this is truly how they treat animals at Petco, we will stop buying from them too. We will be shopping more at For Pets Only and pet "supplies" stores.
