  • Lobster 17lbs / 7.7Kg, 90cm long. One of the heaviest common lobster to be discovered in UK waters since 1931.
    Aquarium curator James Wright said: "At 17lb (7.65kg), it does indeed look like he is the heaviest common lobster to be discovered in UK waters since 1931."

    A guy here in Weymouth caught a 30lb lobster and gave to the Sealife Center, they recon that one was alive when Queen Victoria was on the throne ..... WOW !!

      I assume you aren’t British? Millions of people in the U.K. swim in the sea every year. The beaches of the south coast (Brighton, Bournemouth/Poole) are absolutely packed in the summer.

      In in South Carolina (South East USA) and the nearshore water only give 1 foot or .3M visibility. But if you go offshore about half a mile 1-2 km and the water is crystal clear.

      I was taught it as a general rule. When I started to spearfish, back when I was 8, the first rule I was taught was you never bring a loaded harpoon out of the water.

    Nice one ! no diver's tale this : caught two like that locked together in combat. Took them to sealife centre who didn't want them so put them back in the same area I caught them. Probably older than me. Mikep.

    Lobsters like that should be protected. He probably ate it ofcourse which is a shame. I enjoy lobster but these big fellas are more of a thing that you respect and leave alone.

      In my experience the bigger lobsters seem quite chilled out... I've never killed lobster I find them too fascinating, hopefully this one will have a chance to live much longer in the aquarium...

      I am local ..ish to you, in fact I was diving in that area yesterday , had a few fish , but did not see any lobsters , I suspect your beast has eaten them all , he was probably chilled as he has nothing to fear I guess , I too find lobsters fascinating , but also tasty !! but if I found this one I would not of eaten it , but I am sure it has the power to seriously hurt someone / thing if it got a grip ....

      Kurt dynamite He wasn’t ‘thrown’ into a fish tank. He had to be placed in carefully to make sure there were no air bubbles left in his gills. And he’s no longer fighting for his life because he gets fed squid and mackerel etc. You’d certainly have seen red if I’d have boiled him though!

      Lobster have gills which extract Oxygen from the seawater. Provided a lobster is kept cool and the gills damp, they can survive out of water for a few days maybe longer.

    A 17 pound Lobster is a crayfish compared to the 20-pounder I caught up here in New England scuba diving I tried to donate it to the aquarium and they said they already have one I turned him loose

      It is possible to hold your breath for up to an hour, when trying it you just have to ignore your instincts to come up for air. When most people train they have something to hold themselves underwater for an extended amount of time, like a rope.

    A 17 lb lobster is probabably around 50 years old if not older. Obviously there's no laws around that but as a hunter you should have respect for an animal that's likely to have been around before you.

    Underwater life is so fascinating...I still have no idea how people can say theres no way theres aliens when these creatures living under water are very much like aliens to us land dwellers...life always finds a way

    Where (what country mainly) do you dive? Because there is no way i would be that comfortable brushing up against the rocks and getting so close to the hidy holes where i live.
