  • Let’s get past the Mustang name controversy and address the big question- How easy is the Ford Mach-E to live with. Turns out, the Blue Oval folks pretty much nailed it. Tom Voelk spends a week in a standard range 66kW Premium AWD model. It’s the one with the shortest amount of range, 211 miles according to the EPA. How does it work in the real world? Is charging easy and quick? Can it handle family duty? All of these questions are answered, plus a look at the FordPass Charging Network and the Sync 4A interface. If you have more questions, ask in the comments.

I like this review. However, people complain about the many menu options in the car. What they forget (as a previous Ford Car Salesman) that many of the Sync features can, and should be, controlled with your voice. I test drove a MME while I am waiting for mine and was able to voice control the radio, navigation, and climate controls with the voice button on the steering wheel without taking my hands off the wheel. Just takes some time learning the speech commands.

    • @dmandman9

In reality, most people only do their basic favorite things with their Sync anyway and seldom use its full capabilities. So once they set it, that’s where it stays. Most customers pair their phones, and use the audio, climate control, and navigation and call it a day. As long as those items are readily available, they’re happy. Lol.

Tom's reviews are consistently among the best written I've ever seen. They're very well written, presented conversationally, and focused on what people care about. So many people do a "walkaround" and spend almost no time on the one thing you really want to know -- What's it like to drive?

I agree that very few us actually need a car with huge range. Really, 200-300 miles is far more than enough for 99% of days. The issue is that 1%.
Whether because of family emergencies or weather events, I've had 4-5 events in the last several years where I really needed to be able to get to somewhere 300-400 miles away as quickly as possible.
Even more than range, I think the big bottleneck is infrastructure. As Tom said, right now EVs only really make sense if you can charge at home, which many of us can't. Only about 30% of those between 24-39 (aka Millennials) own a home. That number is not likely to grow all that quickly considering the lack of housing stock and the debt ratio many Millennials carry.
I'm really looking for EV charging infrastructure on par with gas stations before I get one. None of the issues Tom showcased with charging have ever occurred to me with gas stations.

I bought this car last week and I live in LA, the city of cars. I can look out my window and see at least four Lamborghinis and a few Rolls-Royces every 10 minutes but I seem to be turning more heads than everyone in cars much that are more expensive.
Everything about this car is an improvement from the Tesla SUVs besides a few small features. I test drove at least 30 cars before deciding on this and I do not regret my decision. It's a great car, it has style and performance, and I think it's the best car Ford has made.
The range has far exceeded my expectations, I bought the 300 mi and I'm getting 330. Tesla's usually are lower than advertised. The handling and comfort are definitely better than Tesla and the overall interior is far better than the Model S or X.
It's better than anything for this price range for EVs, especially considering all of the rebates and tax credits that take almost $10,000 off. I'm honestly thinking about buying the least expensive version for my parents just to get them introduced to electric cars.

I have had to use the Rex function about three times. We wanted a Rex to have a safety net whenever we travel further from home. The charging stations here in Germany still need some work. On our trips, we have found quite a few chargers that are inoperable. The building we live in is several hundred years old, so no indoor parking. The city parking garage has added three short term spots with a charger, and three spots that can be rented. I have to pay 0.26 Euro cents per kwh, not cheap, but still 1/3 the cost of using my Z4 to commute.

Good review. Good to point out that for most people who live in cities or suburbs (where most people live) that range doesn't really matter as much as you think it does.
don't believe me? go to the "A Better Route Planner" website (yes there is also an app) and select the EV you are considering then enter the last out of town trip you took. The site calculates your most efficient route with when and where to charge. You will notice that it never recommends charging to 100% since you want to arrive at the next charger with maybe 10% left. This gets you the best charging speed and the shortest time waiting. It takes a bit to wrap your head around it if you are used to "fill 'er up!" but this is how pilots fuel their planes. Carrying extra fuel (or charge) is wasteful of both time and energy. You get used to it.
Ford called it Mustang so people would pay attention and know it's not just another Tesla wannabe.

It's adequate but disappointing in that it doesn't beat its rivals in any performance category - again, that's why they chose to recycle the Mustang name. In all I give it a "meh" grade.

If you charge at home and use the car for moderate commutes you're fine either way. Great video. What people need to understand is the shorter the range the more you have to charge the vehicle. You don’t want to have to charge it every single day. In most cases people are not going to the gas station every day. The other thing is dealer markup’s that nobody talks about in their videos. A lot of dealerships want 15K over sticker. That’s a dealbreaker for me. I bought the Model Y performance and they delivered it earlier than expected and I paid sticker. The tax credit on the Ford is meaningless if dealerships are price gauging. The interior in the Ford is much more cramped than the model Y and after driving the model Y for a couple of days I appreciate not having a bunch of buttons everywhere. It’s clean and I can do everything I need with voice control in the Tesla so I don’t touch the center console very often. I can even open the glove box with voice control. I don’t think the Ford can do that. If you want an EV that operates like a dinosaur ICE vehicle then the Ford is for you. Great and informative review but I have one major complaint: there is a gearbox! A motor directly connected to the wheels would require too much torque, copper and be way too expensive. So instead it uses a single-speed compound planetary speed reducer - lightweight, power dense and for a gear guy like me very cool. This lets Ford convert the power of the electric motor from high speed and low torque at the motor shaft to low speed and high torque at the wheels. Reverse gear isn't required because an electric motor can rotate backwards. So it doesn't require shifting or any driver interactions, but to say that there is no gearbox is not correct.

You really kept it clean and shiny. Maybe the best I've seen in a car review.

I am not a fan of the tablet style dashboard and center console. It looks like they just glued a huge tablet on the middle of the dashboard. The large displays are nice but I think it would look much better if they were blended in with the dashboard instead of looking like they’re just sitting on it.

I've talked to a bunch of designers about that and every single one says it looks too heavy, that the floating effect gives the space a much roomier look.

    • @porscheguy09

@@DrivenCarReviews that’s surprising to hear. I would think the tablet design would appear too cheap and fragile. The center screen looks like it would snap in half if anything substantial hit it. I guess Ford does their research and targets a specific demographic that’s most likely to purchase the vehicle of which I can say I don’t think I’m part of anyway. Personally I’d buy an Explorer ST or an Edge ST before the Mach E but that’s just me.

One of a few cars I've been able to fit 3 Cybex child seats into the backseat (forward facing, not using ISO). And the kids even managed to do the seatbelts themselves!
This was easier in the Mach-E, than the Skoda Enyaq and the Tesla Y (but not much, all 3 are OK).

I agree, omit the Mustang confusion. And that big center screen, I like the dial but screen should be smaller.

Yup especially now that the model y rwd Sr is now only $39,900 has more range, premium trim interior as standard and access to a much better charging network, plus every tesla center has at least 4 fully ev certified tech's working there.
Just try seeing how many Ford dealers near you actually have even 1 ev certified tech on staff! Hint less than half of all Ford dealers are certified to even sell or service their ev products.

Yea in rural America this will absolutely not be viable. We need the power charging infrastructure that is now in the gas refueling for this to work across the board. I for one don’t want to stress about where my next recharge will be available.

Was waiting for this one. Loved it! This is an amazing vehicle but as far as the mustang name, you couldn't have said it better. That's strike 3, ford: mustang 2, the thought of the probe replacing it and now this.
Besides that, car of the year Tom?

Thanks for the great video. I decided on the Y instead though. As a matter of fact, I don't see Ford being able to compete with Tesla going forward. Range, efficiency, cargo, charging. The Y wins. Ford sold about 6,000 in Q1 2021. I don't think they would have sold any if they had not been subsidized. How many people going forward are going to buy a Mach e for more money than the Y, once Biden extends the ev subsidy to Tesla? The Ford goes from $5000 cheaper overall to $5000 more expensive. As a side note, the VW ID4 is probably an ok competitor to the Model 3, but it won't be getting any incentive in the US since it is manufactured in Germany. It really seems that this is the year where Tesla definitively buries it's potential competitors.

All people need to do is check out Sandy Munro’s channel Munro Live and watch the dissections of various EV like Teslas and the Mach-E. Sandy is a well known automotive expert who runs an engineering consultant firm, he used to work at Ford for many years, decades of experience, he calls it as he sees it, straight shooter.

Hi Tom, love your practical (and slightly sassy) videos! I placed an order for a red AWD premium last month but I'm struggling to decide if it's worth bumping up to the expanded battery. I've got a 90 mile round trip to Seattle as my commute, so the standard range would handle day-to-day but don't know how much battery degradation will play into it as I intend to keep it for many years.

I always leave it up to buyers to know their own needs. Day to day won't be an issue. But I would consider resale. It will be much better on the extended range pack I have to believe, especially as EVs get longer ranges.
