I'm a retired ad guy and once worked for a creative director who introduced Diet Coke to the world a long time ago in a splashy, expensive and successful ad campaign. He would explain in subsequent new business pitches that the tag line "Just for the taste of it" was the secret of its success. Why? Because zero calories was not enough...it had to taste good. Particularly given the track record of competing products up the that point. Privately, I had my qualitative doubts, but, I could not disagree with the reasoning. Which is why I agree with you. People will buy this, ultimately, for the fun factor, not just because its an EV. Thanks for another great review Tom.
It's the only way EVs are going to be a hit. Give the people what they want. And I remember that tagline. And the melody. And now I can't get it out of my head.
It's a great-looking car. If I were in the market for an EV, this would be on my list. And I would like to add that your filming in the fog looked amazing! Great work as always, Tom.
My ICE vehicle when I had it, would get 35-45mpg in the warmer months, and 25-30mpg in the colder. The cold weather decrease always seems to get mentioned with EV's, but not ICE. Plus, in the winter, an EV gives you cabin heat within a minute of getting in, and can be preheated inside your garage. Also, If plugged in while preheating, your efficiency isn't hurt that much and uses little energy.
Hello Tom, I think this is a great review and video production. Yes, I bought my MME 4x, the most I have ever spent on a car, for me to have fun in and it's my very first BEV, happy to not pay almost $4 a gallon for gas.
I have seen several reviews of the Mach-E. While others mention the mesh-covered speakers on the dash, you are the only one who realized that the dash was designed to replicate the dual-cowl styling of the classic Mustang. Nice catch!
I love this car! But the wait is real!!!! I ordered this in Feb. it was delivered 11/11. This video is very comprehensive, the only thing that I thought of while watching this is the ambient sound that exists inside. you mentioned the propulsion, but there is a very subtle "throaty-ness" you hear that reminds me of a performance V8 "gurgling" while idling. just a really cool thing I have been noticing too. Great vid mate!
I drove one of these (AWD Premium) and it was a pleasant experience. The big negatives for me were the price ($56,000) and the battery (I need range and the time to re-charge is an issue). To me two big things that need to be resolved are the charge time and energy density of the batteries. The other (depending on your view and finances) is the high price.
I just test drove a standard Mach E GT. It was pretty amazing. I have a Premium AWD Extended Range. I just placed an order for a fully optioned GT Performance Edition. It’s going to be a long wait but worth it. My new one will be a 2022 model.
Tom, you alluded to the point that for not much more money people should step up to the GT over the Premium, downplaying the cost difference. To get a GT with the same options as my premium would cost over $15,000 more. For those of us with families I'm very happy that Ford produced an EV that has all the options that we want for comfort, without demanding that we step up to a performance level that we would rarely if ever need.
Of course, your production values are high and always look good! On the Mach-E GT, like the exterior but the interior's huge floating tablet and I also don't care for the mixed materials on the dash.
Excellent Review Tom. I beleive Ford really knock it out of the park with this vehicle (SUV / crossover / Mustang or not, it is really irrelevant). My wife is in love with it. Superb photography, really amazing me
Whether it's an SUV or not will be relevant if US tries to do another EV bill that specifies how each type of vehicle will have an MSRP limit to qualify for the Tax Credits in the future. As it stands right now, the Mach-E is considered a "Small Station Wagon" by the EPA, so it will have a much lower MSRP qualification than an SUV.
Nice review!! What a great car. I couldn’t get passed the Mustang name at first but it looks like a solid car. I’m getting passed it now. I just refer to the car as the Mach-E anyway. Looking forward to seeing more.
When you take your hands off the wheel, it makes me nervous. What if you had a catastrophic tire failure? Would the car do something super fast to bring it under control? Great review as always.
Why isn't there a "regular" Mustang review on your channel? Also, I've the TP haul in the Mustang GT. I think I fitted 4 or 5 of the similar packs in the trunk itself. Did a huge load of 4 packs too, filling up both the trunk and folded seating area (no pun intended). At the wife's request, of course.
I was super impressed with my test drive of the Mach E GT at the Seattle auto show. It was really engaging in the drive around the block that they had. I wonder if it was the same car you had in your review. How many grabber blues are in the NW for loan can there be?
Very cool vehicle... looking forward to the next generation of EV's as efficiency improves and they are able to bring the weight of the vehicles down. Exciting times.
I don’t know if a spare tire is a red light. The last flat tire I got was in 2006. 15 years or so. With some fix a flat, you are never really that far from a repair shop most of the time. So I ask you Tom, when was your last flat tire?
My last flat was my wife's car, in the rain (so it's worse than me having a flat). Seems we have that experience once a year. And I've had two experiences with run flats where they didn't run flat. They failed completely and the vehicles had to be flat bedded to be fixed. I'd say it's a red light.
Great review and great car! Ford has a winner on it's hands. I drove an LR AWD couple weeks back and came away impressed. I wish they could have spec'd a faster charging rate, but if you are not doing long trips all the time, I think this is a nothing burger. GT looks like a compelling option for a sporty AWD EV.
I know it must have been challenging to shoot video in the foggy, gothic environs of North Bend but it was well worth it. A top notch production. I was well set on this purchase and willing to wait. Problem is archaic ford dealer system. Get this, you order, wait months, car comes to dealer and they mark up 15k saying that actual order of the car is not and order, and they can just put the car on the loft and sell for markup. Mustang and EV forums are full of horror stories like this. Obviously, no the same case for Tesla and just for the record Volo now does the same now, order online, pick at dealer at sticker price.
Wow. That is a problem indeed. Dealers argue we as consumers "need them" to protect us from bad behavior by manufacturers but the reality is i'd give anything to order directly from Ford and have them just deliver the new Mach E to my house. Dealer franchise laws are truly one of the most illogical and market distorting laws around. I hate car dealers!

I’m glad that Ford added some performance to the Mustang Mach E. Maybe this will help the folks that weren’t pleased that an electric car with a different body is wearing the Mustang badge.
The cool thing about the internet is that you don't need to depend on one persons opinion. I suggest that people interested in the GT check out Sandy Munro's teardown of a Mach-E and another Munro video talking about Blue Cruise. In addition there are several other reviews that don't mislead you into thinking the Extend mode is faster. It's not. The reason being that the GT will significantly back-off power after 5 seconds or on spirited road driving. Extend mode lowers the power so that you don't notice the back off. This along with Sandy's analysis of the cooling system might give a perspective buyer a more rounded look at the GT.
@@e70_x5_guy4 Considering the Mach-E has been pretty much sold out everywhere, and plenty of pre-orders in line, I'd hardly call their marketing strategy a "mistake".
The Mustang Mach E is a very attractive Sedan both inside and out. Love the performance. I just wish Ford didn't set power to throttle back to save battery life. Watch drag race videos. It leaves like a rocket but you can see it slow down after approximately 60' to preserve battery life at 70%. The Mach E would lose in a drag race against the Tesla Plaid because of the battery saving feature. I'm sure you can find a computer Garu to possibly overwrite or eliminate this program, but losing your warranty would not be worth it. I test drove a premium Mach E and was pleasantly surprised with the total package. Ford using the Mustang name was brilliant. Many people like myself love Mustangs but need a usable backseat with 4 doors creating a new customer. The Mustang name also keeps people like yourself creating customer curiosity while asking. Is it really a Mustang bringing customers to the Ford brand. I was excited to Look it over and To Drive it and wasn't disappointed. Yes. Its a Mustang that includes the Mustang gues front and rear with a plug instead of a gas tank. Considering the Mach E only sets an average of 14 days on dealer lots when they can get one. It's a home run for Ford. By the way. I see the Mustang Mach E as a 4 door hatchback and in my opinion has much better build quality than a Tesla. Regarding the Throttle back during a performance run. The battery warranty is 8 years or 100,000 miles (whichever occurs first), with retention of 70% or more of the original High Voltage Battery capacity over that period. Thanks for the ride along and your detailed information.
This thing is SEXY AF. Wow. I cant believe I'm saying this about a family crossover. Wow, Ford has knocked this one out of the park. I was upset family friendly sports sedans are not doing well, but if automakers make this kind of stuff count me in.
Tom ~ very nice video, very informative. Included the info people really want without a lot of hooplas. No you don’t need to review Tesla’s and for now nothing really new…..
Door issues mainly addressed through updates. In extreme cold conditions, that can have an effect on purely electric doors, but that apples to all EVs that uses that tech.
Nice review! Ford has a winner here. But when is the Evil Twin going to prove himself and do something truly "evil"? Wearing black Cons is not a crime.
Cold temperatures and highway driving reduce the range of all cars - it is just more noticeable in an EV because EVs are so much more efficient in the first place.
Excellent review as usual, Tom! "visibility was around 30 meters" - You used metric! 😳It makes me happy to see more and more Americans using metric. I've switched to reporting my weight and height and metric as well.
What a fantastic car! I love my Tesla, but am thrilled Ford seems to have really nailed it! It's handsome, fast, desireable and has amazing stats. I really feel Ford, with this car and the upcoming F150 Lightning, really has figured out how to create super compelling EV's that make people want to spend the small premium it takes upfront to get into an Electric.
I love my 2021 tesla y performance! I have owned 8 stangs recently 04 mighty cobra, 2012 boss 302 and the 2017 Gt 350 which I traded in back in June for the y performance. The y performance is hands down faster with no mustang v8 sounds. I thought that would be a problem but so far I don’t miss it. That instant torque makes up for it! In Inclusion, the Mach E is a great looking car!
Ford has announced plans to recall 17,692 of its all-electric Mustang Mach-E SUVs built between February 2020 and June 2021 because their windshields may not have properly adhered to their frames during production. In a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford says impacted owners will be notified starting October 27. Owners of the vehicles are advised to take it to their local dealer for repair. 2021 ford mustang mache e4x ANDI HEDRICKCAR AND DRIVER In addition to the windshield issue, 13,544 Mach-Es are also recalled for a similar issue that affects the SUV's glass sunroof. In that filing, Ford indicated that if loose, the SUV's roof glass could potentially fly off while the vehicle is in use, causing a road hazard.
You forget the suspension bolts being loose recall. I laughed so hard at the first year mach e issue's, especially after farley and levin dissed tesla over fit and finish issues last year. Then the gt 5 sec full power issues are icing on top of the cake for me. And this is from someone whose last new vehicle was a 2018 f-150 I paid 34k for in 2018. And I've owned over a dozen new mustangs to. 😀
@@4literv6 Hmmm, first year Ford issues compared to Tesla's 10th year issues? Not sure you guys are comparing this objectively. Pretty sure Tesla's first few years weren't exactly perfect... by a long shot
@@got_logic1320 Ford has made mass produced vehicle's of all kinds for over a century. No excuses allowed for Ford imo. Karma for ya eh fomoco execs. 😀 All us ev fans have heard for year's is how once the oems got going on evs. Their experience and ability to scale would crush tesla. Yeah how did that work out again? @@4literv6 First time EV, new designs, always room for error. Not like they never had recalls for their other vehicles before, happens to EVERY car manufacturer. Obviously plenty of Tesla recalls too. Yes, true, Ford did get a little egg in their face for their statement, no denying that, and no denying they have a lot of work to do. But, again, quality issues have been plaguing Tesla since their inception, and it's still going. Even Musk has acknowledged the criticism from Munro about the Model 3 build quality, which was compared to a "Kia in the 90s". At least Musk was relatively humble in that interview, but again, he acknowledges the issues that Tesla still needs to work on. No where did I not acknowledge Tesla's successes, and clearly Ford can learn from that, but there's a difference from being a blind fanboi to either company and not acknowledge the pros and cons of each.

They have never impressed me with their build quality, tech or available features vs the msrp. Simply are widely available decently built vehicle's that we're semi affordable and often imo had quite stylish designs in their segments. Really my little fiesta st that ran 13s with a simple tune&exhaust while getting nearly 40mpg hwy back in late 2014 was my favorite Ford I've yet owned. You're either very biased, or you haven't actually been paying attention. There are known supercharger issues if you actually google for it. There's actually forums that give you pointers on how to troubleshoot and report supercharger issues. Odd to have such sites (with users commenting on their experiences), if there's never a bad Tesla charger...
Looks good, sophisticated... except for that plastic toy color! I suppose there's a foxy dark blue metallic available... just probably will cost extra.
On the looks front, it doesn't impress as much as it should. The rims on the model you drove look more like a set you would find on the base model, not the top trim. Love the color and overall looks, interior and the performance seems just right. But I'm not sure how many of these Ford is selling. The dealership in my town always has a few parked on the lot just sitting there. Still, I think the brand has done a great job on the "Mach-E" and the new Maverick and Lightening are also a great products, but most brands are in that awkward in-between stage of leaving behind ICEs to embrace the EVs era. Not sure of what is profitable for them right now or what kind of debts they are accruing in that race. I agree with you on the name. Mach-E would have been fine. No need to drag in the Mustang lineage since that car has always been a pony-car coupe... which has absolutely nothing in common with this SUV other than 0-60 times. Red Light/Green Light is perfect!
The question is, are those units siting on the lot being marked up by $15K, driving people away? Maybe. Maybe not. Everything I can gather says Ford is having a tough time meeting supply. And I prefer the wheels on the Performance model. Sorta so-so on the Grabber Blue. We're all different.
Ok if I steal unatainium? Everything Porsche has ever made qualifies. I just don’t get the allure of hands free driving, but I never thought craft beer would be a thing either.

This along with Sandy's analysis of the cooling system might give a perspective buyer a more rounded look at the GT.
I too am in the camp that feels they should not have called this a Mustang. But it seems like an excellent EV!!!
Yeah, that’s the real mistake
@@e70_x5_guy4 Considering the Mach-E has been pretty much sold out everywhere, and plenty of pre-orders in line, I'd hardly call their marketing strategy a "mistake".
Isn't that giant LCD screen a distraction, and tires the eyes (just like staring at my computer screen at work does?)
You do understand you're not supposed to be consistantly staring at the LCD screen while you're driving, right?
Love your vest, Tom. Who’s your stylist? ☺️
It helps to have a wife with taste
Wonderful review!
My issue with the name is it simply wasn’t necessary to call it a Mustang. It’s a new vehicle, give it a new name!
I just call it MACH-E but I like the pony/horse theme they could have chosen a different breed of horse.
14 hours on 240v seems a long time even for an 88kwh battery?
Would love this car but heard the doors don't open all the time and I don't know if i trust ford ui
Door issues mainly addressed through updates. In extreme cold conditions, that can have an effect on purely electric doors, but that apples to all EVs that uses that tech.
The Sync 4 UX is pretty good.
Nice review! Ford has a winner here.
But when is the Evil Twin going to prove himself and do something truly "evil"?
Wearing black Cons is not a crime.
Yeah, he's kind of a poser. And I think his shoes are navy.
Dude commits so hard i really think he has a twin sometimes 😂
That evil twin is so good, that my daughters really think there is a evil twin ...jejeje
Cold temperatures and highway driving reduce the range of all cars - it is just more noticeable in an EV because EVs are so much more efficient in the first place.
I don't believe that's accurate
Whateva happened to Gary Coopah?
Excellent review as usual, Tom! "visibility was around 30 meters" - You used metric! 😳It makes me happy to see more and more Americans using metric. I've switched to reporting my weight and height and metric as well.
What a fantastic car! I love my Tesla, but am thrilled Ford seems to have really nailed it! It's handsome, fast, desireable and has amazing stats. I really feel Ford, with this car and the upcoming F150 Lightning, really has figured out how to create super compelling EV's that make people want to spend the small premium it takes upfront to get into an Electric.
Just don't watch the Edmunds comparative test 😉
I love my 2021 tesla y performance! I have owned 8 stangs recently 04 mighty cobra, 2012 boss 302 and the 2017 Gt 350 which I traded in back in June for the y performance. The y performance is hands down faster with no mustang v8 sounds. I thought that would be a problem but so far I don’t miss it. That instant torque makes up for it! In Inclusion, the Mach E is a great looking car!
I hope I'm as cool as you when I'm your age, Tom.
"unobtainium"...genius.
"frunk"...ugh.
love your reviews!
Finally! Kids can Paul Walker themselves silently.
Very cool. I prefer the elegance of the Porsche though.
Tesla quality control disqualified it for me.
MACH-E is actually way better value than a PORCHE and the TAYCAN has had many QC issues.
Great review! i L U V the vest!
Hope someone loans you a Y for 2 days. Still would love to see and hear your review.
I've driven the Y and I can tell you it's pretty good. My personal view? Spending my own money, I'd buy the Ford.

In addition to the windshield issue, 13,544 Mach-Es are also recalled for a similar issue that affects the SUV's glass sunroof.
Especially not after they bragged about their experience and even mocked tesla on social media in late 2020 for issues the mach e would itself shortly suffer from. Karma for ya eh fomoco execs. 😀
All us ev fans have heard for year's is how once the oems got going on evs. Their experience and ability to scale would crush tesla.
Yeah how did that work out again? Looks at teslas total evs produced at over 2.5million, looks at their market cap&total debt.
Yup they sure are crushed. The oems that is. 👍🏻
Mark fields former Ford CEO and current hertz ceo said it best. Tesla is the leader in evs period. 😎
@@got_logic1320 not their first ev the 1998 ranger and 2013 Ford focus evs would like a word with you on fomoco ev history. 🤔
I get what you are trying to imply, I've owned over 20 new Ford's from focus se&st, fiesta st, various gen mustangs and many f-150s.
Outside of my 1985 white exterior red interior 5.0 5-speed I bought in the 90s that is. 😎
Hehe. Nice Sopranos reference
“Driver assistance technologies” to avoid accidents are great, but for the time being, I prefer to keep my eyes on the road and hands on the steering wheel. 😊
How about VW ID4 AWD ?
Waiting to get one
You will never see a bad Tesla charger, but the other charger stations are are broken or Not working..
Anecdotally, I had a friend on a XC trip with her Model X and got tripped up with a bad station plus growing lines at others. So there's that.
You and Doug Demuro have the best quality review videos
"Except for the symphony of V8 and two extra doors" - you meant, two fewer doors?
Ok if I steal unatainium? Everything Porsche has ever made qualifies. I just don’t get the allure of hands free driving, but I never thought craft beer would be a thing either.
Guessing you had nothing to do with this, but Google dropped in three Ford ads during this video. Not the most subtle placement…
Correct. I let Google choose the ads for me.
Glad that I will buy a fully loaded Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition anyway. And do a review of the Lucid Air please.
I imagine Tom's garage looks like a Sam's Club with all of the family-sized packs of toilet paper stacked to the ceiling.
Nope. I just go to Costco. I don't have room in my very small garage cave.
Great job as per usual, maybe one day for us non-videophiles (if that is even a word) you could show us, errr ok maybe just me, how you do the evil twin shoot, where you both are onscreen at the same time. :) Sorry, I'm an editing dumbass. :)
