  • Who's bright idea was it to not broadcast Westworld in widescreen, honestly? Anyways, here's a shoddy trailer for a film that is not unfilmable, but in fact unproducable. Seriously, I dare you to walk into a Hollwood office and tell them you want to make a movie about Injuns being scalped by the hundreds and every character generally being hunky-dory with it.

This is one of those book where if they made it into a movie, it would be soooooo watered down and the sad part, it would have to be. A smart director would fully admit that you cannot do it justice unless you TELL and SHOW the tale.

The greatest movie that can never be made. To do it right:
    1. NC-17 rating
    2. At least 5 hour runtime
    3. Huge budget and insane cinematography. Simple shots of men on horseback won't cut it, every scene would have to be surreal and horribly beautiful.
    4. Actually sorting out the plot and true meaning of each scene, ESPECIALLY the ending. The ending is one of the most debated in literature, and interpretations of the ending effect how you recall the entire book. In truth, there are 4 or 5 versions of Blood Meridian in my head depending on how you interpret the ending. That would be near impossible to recreate on camera.
    5. Casting the judge near impossible.
    6. Doing justice to the prose.

    • @TwoGraves284

It would most definitely need to be rated NC-17 to depict the judge correctly and get the message across. James Gandolfini could have played the judge if he was still alive, James Spader or Brendan Fraser could pull it off with a lot of makeup of course.

None of your 'suggestions' could ever handle that role. Judge Holden wasn't a goombah, or a formerly (long ago) cute dude (one very intelligent but always arrogant / the other never either thing).

There is no known singularly correct meaning for any part of this book. For a Blood Meridian movie to not be a complete disgrace it would have to reflect that and not try to inject interpretations, which would mean viewers would mostly be unsatisfied.
That’s why this movie should never be made IMO. One of the most important elements of the book for me is that the narration makes very little judgment toward the characters, and a movie would inevitably try to make it more viewer friendly by drawing clear lines of good guys and bad guys.

I put it in a similar category of novel as "American Psycho". As good as the film adaptation was, it was a pale shadow of the book. Blood Meridian would be even harder, whereas America Psycho took place mostly in one man's head, then his apartment, etc. this story _ranges_ literally.

This is a great fan trailer. Well done!
I think they could actually succeed in turning Blood Meridian, not into a feature length film, but rather a mini-series. This story is just too big for a 3-hour runtime, plain and simple.
But, I see two huge obstacles:
    1) Part of what makes this book such a masterpiece is the prose itself. McCarthy's writing is like a biblical epic and a horrible psychedelic fever dream rolled into one. And it's very much concerned with the sensory: how the desert sand shines blue under the moonlight, how hot marrow oozes out of a broken bone, etc... It's so vivid and enthralling. The filmmakers would absolutely have to capture this mastery over the sensorial aspect in order to hold true to the spirit of the book. A big part of executing this, I think, would be securing an absolute GOAT-tier cinematographer, someone like Roger Deakins or Emmanuel Lubezki.
    2) Second big challenge is, of course, how to cast the Judge. Seriously... How the fuck does anyone on Earth fill the immensity of this role? Good luck with that one lol.
Solve those two problems, make sure it has an absolutely horrifying soundtrack (see: There Will Be Blood), and you might just have a successful adaptation on your hands.

I don't think it's the violence that is keeping it off the silver screen, there's no shortage of that in media these days. The problem is that it's a bit of a shaggy dog story- no real plot, climax, conflict or character development. Nonetheless, it's one of my favorite novels. A brilliant, brooding, headlong descent into the heart of darkness that makes up for its lack of conventional novelistic features with its language, description, action, mood, dialogue, provocative (if mostly inscrutable and/or unsavory) philosophical musings and, of course, the larger than life Judge. I am 50% of the way through this book. First time reader. Enjoy all kinds of books, true crime, horror, disturbing literature. This book is super hyped up and considered to be one of the most disturbing books ever.
The writing itself is nice. It’s definitely well written. Is that what has established it as a classic? thus far there is little plot, doesn’t seem to building to any sort of climax or conflict at least that I can see. Especially since I am exactly 1/2 way. There is no character development to speak of. Yes, there is a lot of violence, but it’s not saying anything to me. There is no exploration of motives of thought processes of characters. It’s just violent for the sake of being violent. I don’t even find the violence to be that shocking. Perhaps because this type of racism and violence actually existed. Collecting scalps of indigenous people not all that shocking. So far I’m not getting the hype, but maybe I will once I finish it.

There have been shades of 'Blood Meridian' in film and tv over the past 15-20 years. John Hillcoat's The Proposition is a fine example of how the film should look and some of the extreme violence that a film adaptation would necessitate. Coincidentally, Hillcoat directed The Road, also based on a Cormac McCarthy novel. AMC's Hell on Wheels was an occasionally brilliant show that was hampered by some stupid plot twists, but has the tone that a Blood Meridian adaptation would need. Based on their effective performances of twisted and evil characters in Hell on Wheels, either Christopher Heyerdahl or Tom Noonan could play Judge Holden. I think Noonan would be the better choice, although at 70, he may be a little old for the physicality of the role. Also, Andrew Dominik's The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is another excellent example of how the film should look and feel. Dominik or Hillcoat could each do the film justice as director. I also love Jerermy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room) and although he has never directed a western, I think he could do an amazing job with the material. His frank and graphic depictions of violence would suit a film adaptation well. Some actors that I 'd like to see in the film would be Scoot McNairy, Michael Shannon, Sam Rockwell, Garret Dillahunt, Bill Camp, John Caroll Lynch (maybe as Judge Holden), William Mapother, Toby Huss. Hell, I could even think Matthew Mcconaughey could play against type as The Judge. The casting of The Kid would be tough. Perhaps an unknown actor. All the young actors I can think of are too attractive. The Kid needs to be someone with a bizarre/unique look to him.
I just now thought that director Jeff Nichols (Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter, Mud) would also direct a great adaptation. Also, his brother Ben Nichols of the Memphis-based band Lucero, wrote and recorded an EP based on Blood Meridian called The Last Pale Light in the West. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Those are some of my thoughts.

Where's your budget? Where's the scouts? Hung head down above the ashes where the fire once boiled their brains until steam came out of their nostrils.

Arrows protruding necks and dust settling on freshly scalped skulls.

The gore isn't the problem at all; it's the prose. There have been countless brutal, shocking films over the years (think Salo, or Martyrs), but how many can accurately capture the beauty of McCarthy's language? I'd wager very few, if any. No Country for Old Men works because it's essentially a pulp play but in novel form anyway. Blood Meridian, not so much.

    • @Trav_Can
      @Trav_Can 2 года назад +5

@@INFEDnoX I agree. I would joke if they made a movie of Blood Meridian it would have to be at least three hours long, NC17, and half of it wouldn't even have dialogue. Much of the movie wold simply be landscapes and night skies with the jingle jangle sound of the horse tack.

Apart from the use of the word "injuns" the description nailed it. This novel is not unfilmable. The story is, in fact very straight forward, and the imagery is all there in the text. What this novel is, is un-producible, since almost every producer would get cold feet just from hearing the synopsis. Any film of _Blood Meridian,_ would require a producer like a Dino de Laurentis, who famously saw the rough cut of David Lynch's _Blue Velvet_ and decided he needed to become a distributor as well since, as he put it, no one would dare touch the film as it was... and it _needed_ to be released as it was.
The other option would be for any prospective director to insist on a Director's Cut, in case the studio got cold feet at the last second.

It's probably been said before, but one issue with them making a movie about Blood Meridian is the violence. Not the acts, but to properly capture the emotions, or lack thereof. For the viewer, it would be horror. The audience would gasp, cry, gnash their teeth and bite nails in two. But for the characters on screen, in the book, for them it was just another Tuesday.

This will be a movie loosely based off of the novel. Anyone who had actually read Cormac McCarthy's masterpiece will immediately understand why attempting to turn this novel into a film is a tall order. The WAY this book is written is what makes it a classic- the dark and nhilistic subject matter- juxtiposed against the most thoughtful & beautiful writing style is a large part of what makes this novel so epic. I can see making a movie " loosely based on" or "inspired by" blood meridian, but trying to capture this book and transfer it to film is like trying to capture specific air in your bare hands and bottle it up- it simply wont work.

Music - Probably the hardest part, idk Nicholas Britell + Hans Zimmer + Akira Jamaoka + Ramin Jawadi ( i would hire all of them, ofc it would need loot of money, but i wouldnt relese the film until i had the right music. and it wouldnt be classsic western style with harmonica, it would have to be more orchestral, and sometimes i imagine onlly one instrument playing)

Studios often avoid R rated entertainment beyond cookie cutter horror films because it’ll have a narrower audience. To make this film would be to create an expertly directed visual masterpiece, filmed almost entirely outdoors, that might even be too violent for an R rating. Very unlikely they would take that kind of financial risk.
