Starting this year and the last, I noticed that hotwheels has up'ed the prices of hotwheels in the states. I got a couple collector friends over there told me that they are now seeing hotwheels being sold at a minimum of $1.09, some even at $1.49! The age of hotwheels selling a fixed dollar car is no more on retails over there sadly. Inflation has taken a huge toll all over the world especially this past few years.

Another reason as to why hotwheels is $1 usd is that most hotwheels cars are imported back to America where they're shipped off to Malaysia, Australia etc. Cause the usa is where the cars are defultly shipped off to means theres generally surplus cars, which also means the pegs are normally full, and in Australia supermarkets have to wait for a new case of cars to come in.

I am older and can verify that the price in the early 70s was indeed $1. Of course, they had moving parts and all metal back then. I'm not sure that the licensing is so cost restrictive that they'd still make them at a loss. Even with the fantasy castings offsetting the costs. Perhaps less profits, but it seems bad business to make products to lose money. Although the video game consoles often make little profit, but gain big on the accessories and games. So Mattel pushes racetracks, premium castings, and other related products to keep the company profitable.

In the UK mainlines hover around the £2 mark. Sterling Vs Dollar is the lowest it's been for decades at the moment (it's nearly halved from where it was in 2006, so the USA isn't suffering like we are at the moment), but that's still about $2.40, more than double what the USA pays...they come from the same factory in Malaysia, so why are we paying so much more? Maybe they need to do "European" master cases...no fantasy and metal bases, as it appears we're paying plenty for them...

This is definitely another thing why the US has an advantage in these things together with those store exclusives. As a collector from europe, I have to say that depending on which store you go to, the prices can vary so much. Some stores can have them for just 1€ while the other can have some that cost up to 4€ and from exploring around, the price range is definitely moving in betwen 1-4€ for a mainline casting. Nobody goes up to 5€ since that would already be in the price range of the series sets. And recently, there was some inflation of price which made mainlines and premiums much more expensive in larger quantities

I get it. Your right. Probably I would say 20 cents to make a hot wheel maybe less. I worked in the manufacturing sector. They also have to pay advertising, card art, wages, shipping, testing the product, Building rentals, lawyers fees an on and on. So to manufacture this product has to be low. They have to pay for everything else. Having said that I would say by the time that hot wheel hits the store. They are getting close to a dollar a piece maybe just a little less 80 cents. In that range. Just an educated guess. The store hikes it up for there profit but also they have losses of damaged cards and theft to pay for.

No longer a dollar buddy. now up to $1.25 Over here where I live up from 26 pesos to sometimes 49 pesos. That's over 2 dollars a car. The shipping and handeling is gonna kill the hobby. Even on Ebay the S?H is too too much. The govs need to fix the S/H issues and put a lock on how much countries can charge for exports. Up to a year ago I was still buying two of ever car. Not anymore. Now I choose my top 10 from a case to buy and only 2-4 doubles. I'm motly interested in older cars from 2000-early 2010s. about 1-2 dollars in swapmeets, but better quality of metal on metal and more variety of licence and unlicence cars to choose from.

I think it's more of a passionate thing they want to hold onto now with the dollar car. The multipacks are above a dollar per car now and matchbox is $1.07 for a single where the hotwheels is at $.94 still. I think Mattel will have to near an almost complete loss before they budge on bumping the single's price just so they can keep the 50+ year string.
