This guy was my vocal coach for the better part of six months and he revolutionised my relationship to singing and speech forever. A sheer typhoon of I.Q. and knowledge. A true master in his field, and a friendly and accessible human being.
So. I watched this, was intrigued, looked for more videos on the subject. He doesn’t have any other videos on this subject. He seems to only be a vocal coach. Came back, read all of your comments, decided to watch this entire video one more time on 0.5 speed to really hear the depth of the different sounds he makes and to better be able to see the micro-expressions his face and body make while he’s talking. Here’s what I came up with: He’s nervous- he barely smiles, he pushes his lips together before and after he speaks, his eyes are locked in a permanent stare down, aggressively hiding fear. his hands are in front of him and touching each other when he isn’t making gestures. He doesn’t smile when he’s done. He isn’t actually confident in what he’s saying some of the time: his eyebrows raise up when he’s speaking confidently- showing his eyes to the crowd and revealing his fear in speaking to the crowd- that’s him when he’s speaking from an honest “him” place. He doesn’t seem pleased with the speech he has prepared. He was thrown off guard by the person laughing and shrugs a “wtf” gesture- which is why the audience erupts in laughter. He doesn’t seem confident or thrilled that his talk includes a reference about killing ones spouse- you can see the anxiety leave his body when he finishes that joke. He smiles during it, he thinks it’s funny, but he then looks away from the crowd, exhales, and covers his mouth- not happy that his Ted talk mentions spousal homicide. He knows he isn’t giving these intelligent people a proper talk with good information- almost like he threw this together as best he could to make it work. As if he doesn’t think he really deserves to be up there informing these people. He might not have felt prepared, he might just be extra nervous, he might be wishing he had more to actually give the crowd. It’s a staged monologue: every ted talk is. He’s aware that his topic is very meta, so he’s carefully controlling the tone of his voice and the cadence of his speech- like he’s speaking from remembered training for public speaking and not from his gut. Because he knows very well that the more information he gives about voice, the more they’ll hear it in his. He knows what he’s talking about, he also knows that he doesn’t know as much about it as he would like to explain. His body language is kindof deadened- he’s trying to hide his anxiety and come off confident and knowledgeable and he can tell when he forgets to posture properly. His face says fear, his body says “don’t hurt me” and his tone says “listen to me.” His public speaking persona doesn’t like public speaking in front of that audience. It might not be information he learned- he may have been told this information by someone who did study it, and took it upon himself to act as the spokesperson for it, realizing he’s in over his head around these intellectuals vs. the “singers” he’s used to being so confident around. The negotiation he mentions was probably a record deal of some kind, meaning a haggling more than negotiation. He shows anger when talking about the man who covered up killing his wife, but he shuts his mouth very tight before starting that story. He didn’t actually participate in that negotiation, he watched it on a video, and it made him angry towards that man. Which is why he says “don’t kill your wife” two times. He does not want to be advocating for that kind of harm, he does not support it. He’s afraid to even joke about it. Overall. He seems to be trying his best to give the best talk he can give. He doesn’t love what his final product is, he’s not confident in front of that crowd, he doesn’t like who he’s pretending to be as an orator. He believes in what he’s saying, he doesn’t believe these people will care about how he’s saying it. He doesn’t want people to think he likes joking about dead wives. Be nice to each other in the comments please. I hope I was insightful.
scrooblethump I’m guilty of exactly the same thing hahaha sometimes it’s nice to vent a little of life’s frustrations out. The key is balance, as long as some of your comments are positive, it’s okay to be harsh and negative a little haha, sometimes people are asking for it :P

It's weird that what he's trying to teach us can literally be used against him.. his stance, mannerisms, voice, all seem trained and fake.. he looks and sounds like he's pretending to not be stressed, rather than defeat the real reason he's stressed and exude genuine confidence. Something is so off about this guy
I think he's stressed about being in front of so many people, crikey wouldn't you be? Even if you speak to a crowd every day, doing a TED would be something different.
As others have stated, it may just be him being nervous about doing a Ted talk. There's a large audience there, and you know that thousands or even millions may end up watching a recording of yourself later.
"But when it comes to what you want, don't tell us the negative thoughts in your head... because they can deprive you of everything... from your deepest desires... to your most profound relationships."
He's stressed, because he knows what he is doing is a form of pseudo-science that only has a small foundation in truth and reality, and for the most part is just a parlor trick that kind of works sometimes.
It just seems to me he's nervous... This may one of the first times he's speaking in such a large crowd. Wouldn't judge to harshly as i don't know how i'd do in this situation.
Obviously he has experience with speaking in front of crowds. He just explained how to see through the misperception he's giving off himself. He is not nervous.( Not about the speech he is giving) Either he understands this concept just enough to explain it but not utilize it or simply he just did a few bumps before hand.

This guy was demonstrating the things as he talked about them. It's scary to view the ignorance or lack of perceptual intelligence in most of the comments below. His talk was not merely words, but also the real time demonstration of the subject of his speech. If you didn't ask yourself why you felt uncomfortable, and concluding that your discomfort means someone is nefarious in some way, you didn't get the genius of this man's presentation. I guess good information is only for those looking for it. As a teacher of mine told me many times, you cannot expect much when you cast pearls before swine. Those of you who didn't get it are the perfect example of a populace that is conditioned to fear and mistrust any feeling they deem uncomfortable. The presenter did all of that with prior planning and intention.
@orthopraxis Not genius. Not intentional. In the end, after more study of this vid than planned, he did absolutely and perfectly make his points, but he'd have been far smoother, done a Bill or Barack, if he'd been able.

The big difference is the men may be coughing to mimic the elders and make them feel more comfortable by not causing their "weakness" to be highlighted. The "false cues" here aren't serving to cover possible deceit (unless the elder that starts it all is just faking it lol)
Hmm... a written cue in "Don't KILL your spouse" is the capitalizing of kill, which suggests killing would be the norm but that there is, surprisingly, a better alternative.
To all the negative commenters down below: I'd like to see you try to speak to a crowd of the world's smartest people for fifteen minutes. Oh wait, he did, and you did not.
I don't see proper skepticism and criticism here. I see simple trolling and judgement of his confidence. Basically these are attacks on his very sense of self-worth.
Ok, what about people with aspergers? We are often aware that our facial and vocal cues are subdued or absent, making people feel uncomfortable, so we over compensate by trying to show emotion. We know this isnt natural, so we fear that the person will think its fake. Our vocal chords dryout and people think we are lying. Many people with aspergers are truthful to a point where they are almost incspable of violating facts by lying, yet are called liars or manipulstors simply since our facial and vocal cues aren't natural. The things this man is saying could very easily worsen the problem.
so much knowledge and words, but so little information coming out... tell us the full story of those 1200 sounds if you mention them, or link them, idc there's so much effort put into this talk on getting the message across that everyone's giving away vocal cues, but there's so little effort put into telling us what they are (what kinds or whatever) and how to find/recognize them
This... THIS is the reason why the phrase "Know how to tell if a politician is lying? If their mouth is open and sounds are coming out; they're lying." We all know when politicians are lying... they're politicians. Never trust a one of them. :-)
Browsing comments makes me feel the need to point out how difficult speaking on stage can be. Just sayin. On another note, it is a fascinating talk. We already know changing physical actions can alter moods, such as smiling to improve a bad mood, but to alter the vocals to alter stress levels? Very cool, looking forward to where else they go with it.
got me to pay more attention to voices (such as the announcers on the basketball game i just watched) and think about what their voices are saying. interesting
How can you get a baseline if the only thing you hear is a testimony? I am weary of these vocal cue and microexpression people that say they can tell if someone is lying. They cannot. They can -sometimes- feel stress, feel out some base emotions. BUT that´s something we can all do. Most of the things they catalogue are completely obvious to anyone with half a brain and the fact that they feel the need to catalogue them does not speak to their social prowess.
He's going to deliver a speech in which he talks about how his career is based on detecting stress in the voices of people giving speeches. No pressure!
He's not arrogant, he is passionate about his topic, but thats only a small part of his effectiveness. This guy is a GREAT speaker. He does too many good things to list...One of my top 5 TED talks!
But what are those wide red parenthetical markings on the outsides of his temples and cheekbones? They look like sunburn while he was wearing a swim mask or like some kind of quirky war paint. Y'all see that, right?
I don't think it's makeup. Looking at it for a second time it looks more like some kind of cosmetic procedure like dermabrasion or a chemical peel. Except I don't know why it isn't spread more evenly over his face. If I were there I'd ask him during the Q & A.
Lol @ the comments section. If you fools actually KNEW your selves in any capacity whatsoever with intention thru compassion to know others, then you wouldn’t have to question this guy’s obvious transparency and authenticity, because you would KNOW for a Fact that what he’s saying is deafening Truth. Maybe if you LISTEN better to what he’s saying and try to visualise it in your head you will see it too, alleviating the need to pass judgement on his ambiguous motives and ‘questionable intent’. Perhaps his “stage act” was subunconsciously, deliberately disguised to TEST all you sheeple out there, perhaps?.. who knows; Was it a test, or a good example
If I wasn't listening to the actual words spoken, but just look at the tone and body language of this man I would say he's really mad at something and finally throwing up his frustrations. That little thing he does with his hands around 13:50 doesn't look too confident either. I hope this helps some people, but it looks really weird to me.
wow. I'm not the only person who reacted to this guy negatively. I got a sense of a slight danger...like he's not quite in control, or like he's trying to be intimidating. to me, that feels insecure...and insecure people get my guard up. insecure guys often punch first and ask questions later. if this guy talked to me in the street, I'd probably wanna get outta there pretty fast...before he asked me if I'd found jesus, or if I believed in reptilian alien imposters, or if I was aware of the global Jewish conspiracy. it's almost like he's a Marine Corps drill instructor posturing for max intimidation and authority. or a recruiter. idk. I just felt negative about it.

Many comments regarding the speaker. How much fun would it be if he challenged them to a 1-2-1... 😥😲🤐 ... here & now... have they got the balls to accept. I doubt that very much.
I feel exactyly the same - this guy would scare me - he looks like tv's bad man! I didnt even listen to the whole thing because I dont want to take this nonsense into my head! Just the beginning re allergies - loads of people have dry coughs from gerd which is gut related but NOT stress related but good/bad bacteria or stomach acid related. That was enough to put me off. How dare he judge someone from a simple thing like that! I think many a doctor would tell him right there he is WRONG!
I've seen the first nine minutes and I stopped. I had too many thoughts (what is this???) in the meanwhile. Oh! maybe he is faking and will change completely at the end (like show, don't tell). But as my curiosity is endless I have time to lose in desepointment s
Sorry, I meant NO time for disappointments, so I read the comments... My conclusion, don't be rude! He's got problems with the issue, went to a course to improve himself/found Nirvana/wants to share his discovery with the rest of the world/found the meaning of his life (finally) maybe. Just too ROOKIE/time will tell/I wish him good luck.

He's not arrogant, he is passionate about his topic, but thats only a small part of his effectiveness. This guy is a GREAT speaker. He does too many good things to list...One of my top 5 TED talks!
I have diagnosed dry mouth... It's a dental nightmare.
You're probably just a highly stressed Pathological Liar.
But what are those wide red parenthetical markings on the outsides of his temples and cheekbones? They look like sunburn while he was wearing a swim mask or like some kind of quirky war paint. Y'all see that, right?
Maybe his poor attempt at stage make-up
It looks to me as if he is wearing make up
I don't think it's makeup. Looking at it for a second time it looks more like some kind of cosmetic procedure like dermabrasion or a chemical peel. Except I don't know why it isn't spread more evenly over his face. If I were there I'd ask him during the Q & A.
film these without an audience and then cut to an audience a few times and add applause to the sound.
What’s up with the wardrobe Bud? Tuck in polo shirt with a large red logo? Did Ralph Lauren gave you some money for your fashion statement?
didn't know Al pacino had a Tedx talk
Why you mad?
So you drink or sip a bottle of wAter while you talk
Does he play polo?
Omg! Is this guy a prosucutor!
If I wasn't listening to the actual words spoken, but just look at the tone and body language of this man I would say he's really mad at something and finally throwing up his frustrations. That little thing he does with his hands around 13:50 doesn't look too confident either. I hope this helps some people, but it looks really weird to me.
If he had a voice coach, the voice coach would ask for lower high notes
The dudes voice sounds annoying. I had to play with my levels so it wouldn't irritate me
7:29 like you did Mister Pederson?
Torb is a fantastic vocal coach, after we met him MCing this day, Zara had an awesome session with Torb prior to her Melbourne cabaret season.
Dam when did the "polo" brand label get so big!
,,, very professional alright where straight up I figured Torb Pedersen as an informed and typically over the top Scientologist announcing and pronouncing his 'wog' job ,,,
,,,,,,,,,,,,, though the message is correct despite the 'thespian theatre' ,,, amen ,, PS ,, get rid of the suit of armour Torb ya'just don' need it ,,,, regards
6:43 -- whats up with everyone laughing randomly?? Is saliva really that funny?
Tim Corbin
No, what was amusing was 'we capitalized on that information.'
Ted has put some real doozees on platform, definitely can make you weary of clicking Ted at all
you have just lied, when you said liar...... yes
He is Tony Robbins, with width, rather than height. [INSERT LAUGH TRACK HERE.]
Wear a beater under your polo
He has the same vocal cadence as Christopher Walken. Never knew Walken was a vocal pro.
They are in there smiling hard asf....
I guess it's the exceptions in life that make it interesting. And that speaking like a yank is also off putting to a lot of people.
Ralph Lauren Polo made a bad choice in picking him to advertise them; their image and reputation has been contaminated.
Many comments regarding the speaker. How much fun would it be if he challenged them to a 1-2-1... 😥😲🤐 ... here & now... have they got the balls to accept. I doubt that very much.
what does that audience find so funny?
I feel exactyly the same - this guy would scare me - he looks like tv's bad man! I didnt even listen to the whole thing because I dont want to take this nonsense into my head! Just the beginning re allergies - loads of people have dry coughs from gerd which is gut related but NOT stress related but good/bad bacteria or stomach acid related. That was enough to put me off. How dare he judge someone from a simple thing like that! I think many a doctor would tell him right there he is WRONG!
Is this guy like a modern Sherlock Holmes
shirt looks ridiculous
for a dude talking about language he sure seems to not say very much even though hes talking the whole time.
Why was he so weirdly a heavy breather?
He was lifting weights before he came to the stage
I like this guy's body language. He looks like a Bond villain...
I will work on a lie generator kkkkkk
Why does this guy speak like a Skyrim character?
HAHAHA ALL THESE COMMENT SECTION EXPERTS CRACK ME UP
This guy looks like a harder version of Barry Kripke from BBT to me.
Kripke, and no he doesn't really. But he does remind me of some actor or comedian.
Paul Gee Thx. I changed my comment accordingly.
How to Lie | Torb Petersen
This guy hasn't capitalized on anything
Great talk. Forceful. Informative.
Forceful? Yes. Great? No. Low signal to noise from someone who clearly can’t communicate sincerity, himself.
he lacks confidence himself he has alot of stress in his voice
around 7:00 this is why the far left drink lots of water, cause there always Lian!
Sooo fake. He is consciously hiding most of vocal and body cues, but that just makes him look more artificial.
Creepy man.
What does that weird breathing problem say about you?
I do not like to learn from you mister. See comment about arrogance.
Enough said.
(It's gabriela, by the way).
Thanks gabriela :)
why is his voice so frustrating
