  • The best road bike tyres for commuting, in my opinion…
    Continental Grand Prix 4 Season
    And www.cyclingweekly.co.uk said…
    “These are a mix between Continental’s GP4000S race tyre and it’s heavy-duty GatorSkin. They’re tougher than the GP4000S, yet faster rolling than the GatorSkin, giving great versatility and durability. Excellent puncture and sidewall protection means riders should get good mileage from these tyres without puncturing. There’s great grip in the wet, and they even managed to keep us upright when we unwittingly rode through an oil spill. Only a high asking price cost these great tyres a perfect 10.”
    It's just like what i think! :D

    Reginald Scot,
    The polished wood floor is a nice idea giver but I'd say the best test practically is to do it against a cold polished steel surface like a manhole cover. Those buggers are the one I'm afraid when cornering.

    For commuting and touring I've gone all the way up to 35mm now. (I used to run 28 then up to 32). Maxxis Overdrive Elite at the moment. Puncture-proof kevlar compound, light tread and yet seem no slower at all than the skinnier tyres I used before. Also corner really well.

    I bought these tyres because of your video and your recommendation. I've been running these tyres for a while now (less than a year) and they've been great. They really grip well in the wet and thankfully no punctures yet. I was even riding to work in the snow when we had some early this year. I know they're not designed for that and I certainly wouldn't attempt it when snow turns icy. The only slight negative (and I mean slight) is they're a bit slower rolling yet still pretty good and the benefits outweigh this.

    Usually use these in winter and the Grand Prix Road in summer. Had 1 puncture last week when a 30mm nail decided to join with them. Else no issues at all. definitely more than worth the money.

    Nice test of lean angle on slippery floor I thought - hopefully followed by swapping the tyres to Cheng Shin or Golden Boy for comparison... but no !
    Seriously, I've never noticed any difference in the wet grip of various tyres (however the 'feel' and effect on ride quality / geometry does vary enormously I think).

  • @rokpajer269
    @rokpajer269 8 лет назад +1

    about profile (canals on tyre) not making any difference...since contact patch on road tyres is so small it really doesnt make much difference when riding on straight line, but in my opinion profile makes difference when cornering on wet road, since those "canals" are easy way of water getting away from inbetwen part of tyre that sits on the road and tarmac itself, resulting in better grip since tyre will grip great on tarmac, but will not grip well if there is water betwen tyre and surface in sits on. I'm thinking of those corners that sometimes have running water on them during strong rain season, or some crossings in cities with standing water on side of the road or in ruts. Profile of this tyre looks like it was designed with that in mind + got stickines youre talking about, thats why i'm getting this for my commuter. Thanks for sharing your opinion, helped me to decide on these :)

    Also great for winter/training rides in a typical UK climate... I'm predominantly a racer but also commute and 4-season contis would be my do-it-all tyre if I could only ride one tyre for the rest of my life! I spend most of my time in Norway and rate the schwalbe marathon (plus) tyre as great heavier duty puncture resistant commuting tyres if you want to get 10,000km+ out of them. Never ridden the gatorskins but feel they would fit in somewhere between the 4-seasons and the marathons... all three are durable great investments. At the other extreme conti GP4000Sii are fine for sqifter summer commuting, with slightly less durability. Do forgive the 'rambly' comment - self isolating atm!

    I upgraded to a pair of these recently. It's just for recreational cycling and commuting and these are quite expensive but several people recommended these since I'm still using tubes. One thing was immediately obvious is how easy they were to mount on the rim compared to everything else I had previously. I didn't spend much time riding with them and I'm hoping I'll feel a difference between these and my old cheap tires.

    On these tyres, I have to appreciate their good ability to absorb inequalities on the road even in cooperation with the aluminium frame. Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of higher rolling resistance. I don't mind that much, though, because I use them exclusively on the bike I commute to work on and use for winter prep.

  • @AdrianBadea

    I've been using these tyres for the past 2 years and very good. I was watching this clip to see others opinion. I found them expensive as well, but considering the fact that I never had a puncture in London commute, that is paid off the price. Still in good shape but I would like to get a pair of GP5000 and not sure if would be any better than these All Season ones.
    Cheers

    • @reginaldscot165
      @reginaldscot165  3 года назад +1

      The GP5000 are not better.
      They are very different, more for racing than riding to work for sure. Stick with the 4 Seasons unless you plan to race.
      The GP5000 have good grip, but they are much softer and wear out much faster, they also only have 1 layer of protection Vs the 4 layers on the 4 Season. The GP5000 are lighter... but by not much, less than 10g a tyre last time I checked.

    Hey thanks for the video! One thing I am getting more curious about is about maintenance of tires. So I am have been doing loads research finding out the difference between tires rolling resistance, compounds e.t.c. and what has occurred to me that might be totally unspoken in the way of tire longevity is, do you do anything to make your tires last longer? I went through a period of time when I would brush them once a week - but it was infrequent enough to make a habit out of it. Most tire reviews talk about how durable the tire is- with no mention of care on the cyclists perspective. Is there some obvious care routine everyone is doing that I just don't know about- or does every fundamentally do what I do and leave them as they are the whole time? please note that in the case i do get a flat I will do a brush through- I am asking in this scenario rather, if anyone does any maintenance in a more preventative way?

    • @reginaldscot165
      @reginaldscot165  Год назад

      That’s a very good question, I have never read done any “tyre maintenance” other than washing them and checking for sharp stones, metal and glass. I sometimes glue them or add patches if I get a cut… it’s something I need to investigate. 👍🏻🙂

      Absolutely like these tires, they work well in all conditions... except on a wet wooden bridge. Ridden for 140 miles over all types of surfaces with excellent ride and a speed increase as they have little rolling resistance. Well worth the money and with rotating from to back, I am looking forward to many miles.

      Mucca Pazza Oh yes, I have used them on canal paths and countryside paths... But if you do alot of that sort of path I would advise you get fatter tyres than my 23mm as they are a bit hard and thin for this type of ridding. Also if you get in any mud they are not so good because they have no deep tread. But apart from that they are really fab! :)

    Had them, were shite, got a puncture within 2 weeks and when I fixed it i found the sidewall to be completely torn through aswell as the puncture.
    I now use schwalbe marathon plus in a 700x25c size and in over 2 years with the last set I've had a total of zero punctures. The current set had a manufacturing error with the tread (between the treads the tyre was cracking) so have been replaced by schwalbe. So the new set arriving hopefully today or tomorrow and going on my new wheels, will have the same condition, no punctures for as long as they live. I stand by them when saying they are the best commuting tyres around, much much better than the continental grand prix 4 seasons

      Well sorry to hear you had bad luck with 4 seasons, but it sounds like just that... bad luck. I have had over 10 years of good riding on them with only 1 problem in all that time! Not bad going I think, to say they are shit would be inaccurate. I also had the same tyres as you are using now and had the same problem with them! I thought it was just mine? So does that make them shit? But thanks for the info, might help someone. :)

      You had the same problem? The tread cracking?
      Its probably the same situation to be honest, a glitch in manufacturing but yeah, I may have overreacted to the tyres haha. I can be a bit hot headed at times and need to cool it down- a lot! Haha

      Yeah, just in the blood haha that must be fun, especially on the bike, I have to be very careful with what I say and do on the bike because of my temper :-P
      And I managed to fix the puncture and carefully rode to a bike shop and asked if thet had any old tyres they were going to bin in the size I needed and they had one, a scwalbe lugano so I got home that way, so very thankful for that

    GREAT review! Very thorough. Just curious, have you ever tried Vredestein Fortezza? I really like the feel a LOT but I have had a staple get through only once (out of several thousands of miles). I tried gatorskins and they are just too heavy for me. Between the lower profile and the weight, I felt like I was 20 lbs heavier. I'm not sure how they would compare to your tires (conti 4 season) in feel or your skid test.

    • @reginaldscot165
      @reginaldscot165  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you and yes, I have tried those Verdestein Fortezza. The bike mechanic put a set on my most recent bike that I purchased. I haven't ridden them very far yet probably less than 1000 km. All I can saying initially is that they are light and good rolling, (they have a high TPI count) but they don't appear to be as hard wearing as the 4 Seasons as they have already started to show some damage and wear. As for grip they have been fine so far in both wet and dry conditions. I can't say with any certainty if they're better or worse yet, it's difficult to determine that until you have a crash. They are £10 more than the continental tires. My opinion of them is that they would make a good sport or racing tire for all year round competition. But I wouldn't use them for commuting because they are too expensive and don't seem to be quite as resilient as the conti? Hope this was helpful and thank you for your nice comment.

    • @ShermanSitter
      @ShermanSitter 7 лет назад +1

      That was a very helpful response! Thank you. I'm glad to hear you can objectively compare them. You are definitely right about the faster wear, but I'm a sucker for the colors! That is a very specific question... I have ridden on hardcore and other large chunks of Gravel like a limestone trail... so I'd Guess something big would be good, 35mm. Maybe something with a bit more tread to it. Like a gravel tyre. Plenty of options available. Cheaper would be something by schwalbe, but I do love my continental tyres and would recommend them if you have the money.

    • @poccophoto
      @poccophoto 2 года назад

      Hi, I have the Schwalbe M+ tyres in 700x28c on my single speed bike. I ride in London and they are bulletproof, I mean I can ride over nails, glass, whatever and they won’t puncture. However they are heavy as f***. This means that u will have to pedal harder. So it depends on what trade off’s your willing to make. You could go for the standard Schwalbe Marathons or the Schwalbe Durano + tyres if you want something lighter but still with very high puncture resistance levels.

      it's a whole year rainy season here in my place, i think what that tire got will benefit me.
      i ride almost every week-day, commuting to work, about 12km a day. and sometimes i take longer ride on week-end.
      the road condition is quite good, mostly concrete, and rough tarmac, just about 5% in my daily route which is real bad, it's a broken concrete due to daily heavy loaded trucks , i even got pinch flat there using 41c tire (my bad actually, i ride quite aggressive when that happens).
      i do ride quite aggressive , like hopping over bumps and potholes with speed.

    • @reginaldscot165
      @reginaldscot165  7 лет назад

      Abdur-Rahman sounds a lot like my old ride to work! It's funny you should talk about pinch flats because my Friend had a double pinch flat the other day after hitting a small pothole at speed. Me... I have one had one once, when I hit the exposed edge of a man hole cover doing about 30kph. Apart from that I never get a problem with your average pot hole and that's on a 23mm. 👍🏻

      Reginald Scot awesome, i'll try to take 28c , since my rim seems cant accept rubber narrower than 28. and i hear wider tire have lower rolling reaistance too, my current tires is surly knard, which is knobby cyclocross tyre and i'm pretty much happy with it as i can go fast , even head to head with motorist (well it's descent)
      i wanna know how fast is a slick tire, maybe i can even passing motorist on the climbs? haha thanks.

    HI! I'm choosing tires now and can't decide. I plan to ride in city, highway and light gravel/light forest trails. I'm choosing between the Continental Grand Prix 5000 All Season TR 32mm and the Continental Grand Prix 4 Season 32mm. What can you recommend? I had experience riding the GP 5000(25mm). Good tires, but I didn’t go on gravel because my weight is 100 kg and at a pressure of 8 bar it was very uncomfortable. And it is very strange that the new GP 5000 AS weighs more than the old, but more durable 4 seasons. Perhaps someone had a similar experience?

    • @reginaldscot165

      The GP5000 is a race tyre, it’s not good for gravel at all, it has no side wall protection. Use the 4 seasons or if it’s too expensive try the Gator Hard shell. 🙂

    Accelerating between 2 rows of cars i ran over a put hole with a new 4season 25mm, first ride and the 8 bar went bamm on the front wheel(pinch flat) and tire slipped to one side of the rim and was cut through the side wall between rim and road surface.(bye bye new tire)
    That was an expencive single test ride.

      Well, I have only used the 4seasons, but I know lots of people in the club and friends that use the gatorskins. All I can say is both are going to be a hard ride because of the strong construction and puncture resistance, they give good mileage, grip and reliability but they will never be much for comfort. That's the sacrifice you make I guess, but after riding them to work for the last few years I don't notice any real discomfort. I feel the frame and the seat you have play a big role in comfort. 4 seasons suck, sidewalls are way too stiff (folding) and give a harsher uncomplient ride IMO. they are expensive for what they are. either get gatorskins or 4000S if you're a conti buyer. THe actual width of a 28mm is actually miles off and measures 26mm! Compared to a Giant branded 28mm folder with similar puncture protection at the contact point and similar weight it was easier to get on without having to stretch the tyre a little, rolled much faster, better cornering in all conditions and actually measured 28mm on the same rim so was more comfortable allowing a greater volume of air. I've been riding on the roads in various modes for 30 years since I was a teen so have a wide range of exp. incl tubs

      @shechshire 8 лет назад

      +Reginald Scot Yea, you'll lose some traction on wet surfaces. Tread is meant to help give tires traction on wet roads. So the less tread, the more traction on dry roads. The more tread, more traction on wet roads. It's all the same principles for car racing too. Compound is second in priority.

    • @reginaldscot165
      @reginaldscot165  8 лет назад

      shechshire
      I have tread? its just someone said they are on backwards... I dont think they are, but if they are I was saying its still the same amount of tread so I dont think it makes any diffrernce, as the compound is the same and the water displacement is the same. But I think your talking about slicks... and on tires as thin as this (23mm) they cut through water just as well as with tread... as a guy in a bike shop told me years ago "this small tread will do nothing, its all aboout the rubber compound."
      Thanks for the comment and safe riding. :)

    • @shechshire
      @shechshire 8 лет назад

      Reginald Scot
      Any molded indent on a tire is tread so yeah you do. Well, the thing is that tread that is designed in a directional pattern is made that way so that it can guide & move the water side ways through the tread paths off of the tire so no, the water displacement will not be the same. I mean, bicycle road tires like your's usually don't have much tread anyway but whatever I guess it's up for debate how much it'll really help you. Not really man, the less tread the slipperier it's gonna be on wet roads, that's a fact. The compound of a tire means nothing in rain. Yeah, tires that have no tread are called "slicks". No prob, merry Christmas!

    • @reginaldscot165
      @reginaldscot165  8 лет назад

      +shechshire I hate to do this but.. I just went and checked all my facts and (I hate this feeling) I was right. :(
      compound is more important on a road in wet or dry, different compound for each condition. Now if you are planning to go off road then that's a different story, you will need deep tread for mud or snow, or like my Italian family have on their car, steel spikes for ice! if you look at the tyers in this video it will become apparent to you that the tread has worn off, and yet they grip the road very well indeed! That is because of the type of rubber they are made of, its soft in the cold and sticky to the touch... so it bites into the road nicely. Go look it up on Google, I looked at 5 websites and they all said pretty much the same thing. To give some examples to illustrate my point, the continentals have far less tread than the cheap Michelin ones I had before, but the Michelin were harder compound and so in the wet I would come skidding off the road all the time! Honestly and truthfully when talking about a "road bike tyre" the compound is first, the depth and shape of tread is second... think about it, why do all the top brand winter tyres have different shaped tread pattern if it matters so much? But hay, I am just trying to help, if you still do not trust me read into it yourself, you will be surprised. :)
      I also have a story from my dad about a Citroen 2CV overtaking a Ferrari on a wet motorway that nicely illustrates my point about thin tyres cutting thought water better irrelevant of tread pattern. You have raised some interesting thoughts, I might do a follow up video on this. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

    Used those for my roadbike trip around sardegna, really great grip on road and also on gravel or earth (Used the 25 mm width) and much better puncture resistance than most others while still being fast rolling. The only problem is that the rear tyre was through after about 2000 km, not too bad for racing tyres but will get expensive for commuting at least (about 5000 km a year for me).
    So for my commute with the cyclocrosser I'm currently using Schwalbe Marathon Mondial Evo which don't have visible wear after about 3000 km, guess they'll still be fine after 10000. Not available in 25 mm of course, just 35 and wider. Imo perfect for commuting except for the winter months, but the Marathon Winter do very well once it gets icy :)
    Continental Gatorskin could be a durable choice for commuting if you're using a roadbike, the grip won't be as awesome of course ;)
