I've had the same set on my old steel Bianchi for over 15 years. These days this bike days only gets rolled out in nostalgic moments but the Gators remain in good nick (no sign of rubber degradation) and both the tyres and the rest of the machine still perform well. I would also recommend the folding bead version of these as they weigh less, give a better quality ride, and get easier to take on and off once you've had to do it once or twice. I have seen the wire bead cut through the tyres with age (usually when they have to come off for any reason) but never had this issue with the folding ones. They are slower and have less grip (particularly in the wet) than the GP4000s but perform better, and last much better, than than any other endurance tyre I've used. They can fray around the mesh on the sidewalls and the beading but this doesn't seem to affect the integrity of the tyre and you can always trim the fraying bits off with a pair if scissors if they are bothering you. Most reviews I've seen of the 4Seasons love them but I find them noticeably slower than the 4000s and whilst they have more grip than the Gators they seem to wear much quicker.
the rolling resistance of this tire worse than ultra sport 3?
Excellent tyre for reliability and getting to work on time but they do absorb a lot of energy.
Nothing absorbs energy as much as fixing a flat on the roadside in the rain 😁
Lots of wisdom! Thanks
can these wired tyres fit on older 1970 raleigh bike tyre size 27 x 1 1/4 (32-630) because my old tyres are panasonic panaracer pasela tyres without wires?
Can you ride on gravel?
how is your confidence during tight corners on different road conditions? with these tires?
In the wet or cold they handle like shit. They are durable though
Hello .. they are not heavy 245 gr just 15 gr heavier than the GP 5000 ((which are the best of the rest ))
What do you think of the 4 seasons
Excellent tyres. A bit heavy, but they do what they say on the tin.
sorry...i'm still confused, for what this gatorskin specific purposes?
High puncture protection.
I've been told they slip on wet surfaces a lot and it becomes dangerous, is that true?
Not true at all in my experience.
More fun on Fixies
Very sticky them tyres. Rain not a big issue u can expect because how they looking.
How do I pump up the tyres, wha pump do I need??
Any pump for presta valves. I’d recommend getting a track pump to keep at home. And a small pocket one to take out (or co2 canisters if you don’t mind the occasional expense for a bit of convenience!)
I’ve read a lot that these tyres are very slow. Noticeably slow compared to other tyres. Is that true?
They’re a tiny tiny bit slower. But unless you’re a pro it doesn’t matter. I can tell you they’re a lot quicker than changing a tube!
TheAverageCyclist thanks for the reply. I’ve just been reading some forums and people are saying very slow bla bla etc
Any faster alternatives ?
I ended up getting continental 4 seasons. Great tyres. Very happy with them. No punctures and quick enough
Mate wrong rotation 🤣
Mateusz Klusek Ahh well haha
best value for money tyres
I agree!
They have become quite expensive in recent times. This might be a reflection of previous discounting drying up with supply chain issues since Covid struck but its hard to find folding versions of these for less than GP5000s. The gap between the longevity of the standard Gators and the GP offerings seems to have reduced since the GP5000s came in whereas the gap in performance has increased. This has made the value equation much different to the days when going price of the gators was considerably less than the GP4000s whereas the gators could give somewhere close to double the number kms. The choice between the GP5000s, 4Seasons, Gators and Hardshells is now more down to intended use than value for money.
I use Continental GranPrix 4000 II. Also no punctures for 8000 KM.
Honestly, the Gatorskin is the worst tyre I've ever ridden on. I had 6 punctures over the last year. I keep my tyres pumped hard. Add to this, the general degradation and fraying of the tyre over the year, and I'm not a high mile rider. Micro splits in the rubber, the tyre wearing out quickly. Properly not happy with my experience of them. Giving Continental one last chance by swapping to the Hardshell. My riding is on the roads of central London. Before, I had experience with the Schwalbe One, which only started fraying after 3 years.
You have the tyre on wrong direction .basics mate!.i have these on aswell all year round they are good.
what a heck: "12 000km, I had... 3 sets of tires" - so is it really 12k km review or 4k km review?
This is a long term review, after cycling 12,000km on Gator Skins in which I never had a puncture. I still replaced the tyres as appropriate in that time frame. The point point being the puncture protection is excellent, and you can easily go years without getting a puncture, not how many miles you can ride on a single set before replacing them.
TheAverageCyclist Got the “hardshell” version of these and can confirm... these a damn bomb proof!
Never ever had a flat tire? Right, 0.O
