I agree - I have a set of 26 mm on my Trek Emonda SL6 and couldn't be happier. Only very light gravel from time to time but they are great on the road too.
Panaracer SS or Pirelli H? Intended use: Asphalt, fine gravel, occasional little muddy(ish) forest trail, but no "real" offroad though. Currently riding 25mm Conti GP classic, don't want to loose too much speed on the road but would really like some peace of mind on the rougher surfaces. (Also, gravel decents on 25mm road tyres are scary.)

I bought these tires after seeing someone reviewed it. I was impressed how these tires held up in loose gravel. I got the 26C version as it is the widest I can use for my bike.
I've ridden these tires in two gravel races and a couple thousand miles of training so far this season. I love the tire, but it's not holding up. After Gravel Battle, both tires were flat and each has dozens of small holes in the high wear part of the tread, and the sidewalls are weeping sealant through pinholes as well. Maybe I just got dudds.
Nice! These have quickly risen to the top of my list for an over 40mm slick-ish tire for Michigan Coast to Coast (now in October). Plenty fast for hard sections and will certainly provide float at 43mm on the sandy sections. My Checkpoint SL5 holds up to 45 and it doesn't look like these will cake up with much dirt/mud at all.
Hi Greg, did you get these? I've just got an ALR5 and wish to fit the SS. Did you have enough clearance? What pressures after you running? Tubeless or not? I'm thinking of using tubes as I don't cycle a lot. I'll probably go for the Plus version.

very intriguing, one thing you forgot to mention is that this tire is pretty much the cheapest gravel tire you can get. Making it very attractive to me indeed. At least here in Canada, GK's are $70, Specialized $75, Vittoria are $80, Pirelli are $95...

I wonder what the SS+ will weigh, in the northeast our gravel trail have more gravel/crushed stone then dirt. Not sure the non + version will hold up well. And would love less ting noise on the frame from my current tires the Steilacoom’s, which I’ve tried many tires and seem to come back to these or Barlow Pass. Andrew, today is the release date, but Panaracer hasn't listed them yet, despite saying they would be taking pre-orders starting today... I have an email into HQ, I will post an update ASAP.
It rides well in the wet but you still need to exercise caution in corners, just like most tyres. In my opinion, it is faster than the GK SK on most surfaces, but is not quite as tough.
How do you find the puncture protection? I’ve just converted my normal slick gravel kings to tubeless and every ride they puncture and I have to limp home on 20psi
Thank you sir for the quick reply. They advertise more puncture resistance with that reinforced sidewall. If I’m running tubeless I guess I should be ok? Between the slick and the semi slick - any noticeable speed difference on tarmac? That’s really what I’m trying to figure out. If it’s the same I may just get the semi slick.
David, I have not ridden these tyres in those conditions, the Panaracer Gravel team may know the answer, some of those folks are based in the Midwest. One of their guys is located in Wichita.
I started on GK SK 43mm (probably after watching one of Jom's old reviews) - liked them, bit heavy though and really flicks up small stones into your friends faces. Then I moved to GK Slicks 38mm PLUS - even with the plus casing I still suffered quite a few punctures. They were bloody fast and light though, but found myself sliding out and going easy on dusty corners, which probably offset any gains on the straights. Finally now I'm on the new GK SS 43mm. Great middle ground but still a little bit heavy for my liking for going to climb KOMs. Just did a 322km gravel race on 21mm internal width farsports carbon wheels and ran them at 25psi rear/23front. Super comfortable...but I did bottom out and crack my front wheel on a huge block in a creek crossing, but that was totally my fault. For the reasonable price the GKs are hard to beat and mount up quite easy. Thanks Jom for the review!
Hello, I don't ride trails in the sense you are thinking of. I plan routes that pass through interesting towns, preferably with as much dirt / gravel as possible.
Great review, thanks JOM! Looking forward to trying these when my WTB Byways wear out. (Also, hopefully spelling out J O M will cut down on the "John" mentions, haha)
Trouble is with all these tyres is that they puncture way to easily... I'm running wtb raddlers and they are great but even though I'm using stans sealant with glitter in it they still puncture all the time. I don't want to but I've considered fitting a set of schwalbe Marathon Plus.
@@bikebudha01 Wow. My go to tyre for the unexpected is the Panaracer Gravelking SK. I've ridden all across the USA, three Australian states, and the environs of Girona, Spain. Great choice.
Hello, I believe RUclips is having a technical issue with the closed captions today, usually they are available with all of my videos. You will have to try again another time, sorry.
I bought in to this GravelKing adulation thing back in about 2015 when i bought some of the first 28mm regular tubed ones and put them on my all purpose road bike. Despite the hype, I only expected them to be reasonably fast, but I found them to be very draggy - even at 80psi (and a mile an hour slower on any tarmac ride compared with regular 'race' tyres) so they were removed and chucked in a cupboard. I also have some other Panaracer road tyres which are badged-up by Planet X and touted as 'fast rolling'. They're like riding through treacle as well. Even 40mm WTB Nanos (intended for off-road) are faster on tarmac
@@GravelCyclist Yeah, that's possibly one way to do it, but apart from the perception they're measurably slow even compared with say a gatorskin, according to my strava. An easy 15mph ride on 25mm gators would be a 14mph ride on 28mm gravelkings
Mi pregunta es cómo le echó aire a La goma sino me coge el sistema de echarle aire tiene algún adapte para válvula de el tubo por favor necesito su ayuda
Yes, shouldn't be an issue. I've run 29'er wheels with tyres from 35mm to 50mm. As an FYI, 29'and 700c are the same size, but 29'er rims generally have wider rim beds, which is why you really should run 35 or 38mm wide at minimum.
I have ridden and reviewed both (Byway review is on the website), I prefer the Gravelking SS. Lighter and faster, but I would likely choose the Plus version for additional puncture protection.
@@GravelCyclist Thanks, gonna go with the normal SS after watching your review. Over here in Ontario we have pretty smooth gravel trails so I think it will do
I really wish Panaracer made a 40mm size for their gravel range. 35mm expanding to 38 is ok but for a frame rated to 40mm but their 43mm expanding to 45mm probably wouldn't make it.
The GravelKing SK+ in 700x38 measured 40.6 on my dt Swiss GR 1600 wheelset, worked well on my Open UP frame. The SK+’s weren’t a favorite of mine though, felt sluggish and hard compared to the Steilacoom endurance. But the SS look interesting.
@@Peter-tc3ep I agree, I tried the SK and they felt slow compared to Riddler, Cazaderos, Byways, and Pathfinder Pros that I’ve tried. I’m considering getting some SS as I’m kidding I ride a lot more tarmac these days with COVID restricting my travel.
The big problem with SS is hundreds of rubber barbs from manufacturing. They are screwing up the aero gains from any nice deep wheels you bought. Shame. I would have liked the SS tire a lot.
You're about the 10th person to mention the "SS" reference. I understand the point you're making, as an FYI, Chevrolet have marketed various "SS" versions of their performance-oriented vehicles.

When is the official release date? Just looked for these on amazon and on panaracer's site and don't see them listed yet. My rear tire is due for replacement but I can hold off for a few weeks. Thanks
Andrew, today is the release date, but Panaracer hasn't listed them yet, despite saying they would be taking pre-orders starting today... I have an email into HQ, I will post an update ASAP.
Andrew, visit my website article, I now have links in place that take you to the pre-sale.
Does SS has enough grip on wet conditions please? And how about rolling speed , Is it better than SK?
It rides well in the wet but you still need to exercise caution in corners, just like most tyres. In my opinion, it is faster than the GK SK on most surfaces, but is not quite as tough.
What do you recommend for 70% road and 30 gravel. ss or slick? thank you
I would go with the SS.
I cycle mostly pavement but I like this tire at 32c. Is it good?
Would be an excellent option for 32mm.
@@GravelCyclist what about 35mm? have you tried it on wet pavement when cornering?
Reminiscent of the WTB byway.
How do you find the puncture protection? I’ve just converted my normal slick gravel kings to tubeless and every ride they puncture and I have to limp home on 20psi
Sounds like you should be careful where you're riding. I've had good luck with the SS and the original GK.
Is it as easy rolling as Pathfinder pro tyre?
I would say faster, but I feel the Pathfinder may be a little more resilient to punctures.
How would these compare to WTB Byway 40c? Are they quicker on paved roads? More or less grip?
Frank, I've only ridden the 650b Byway, but I'd still stick with the SS.
I gave up GK slicks so I could get 44 Byways. I want the GKs back. They need to make a 43 slick.
I am more focused on road with some mixed terrain. Is it safe to use the original slicks on light gravel?
I've ridden the original slicks on light gravel, no worries. Bear in mind, they are not the most puncture resistant.
I have no way of testing speed between the two tyres, sorry. I run tubeless in all instances.
Love that China rubber. Panaracer passella= all day long.
Japanese rubber to be exact.
In your opinion, how would they hold up on flint rock? Thank for the review!
David, I have not ridden these tyres in those conditions, the Panaracer Gravel team may know the answer, some of those folks are based in the Midwest. One of their guys is located in Wichita.
@@GravelCyclist As always, thanks!
I should have gotten these tires over the Slicks, but I’m riding the 650b x 48s primarily on road and need all the handicap I can get lol
The true GK slicks are the lightest offering of their entire line.
What trails do you
Ride in GA?
Hello, I don't ride trails in the sense you are thinking of. I plan routes that pass through interesting towns, preferably with as much dirt / gravel as possible.
How true do you think tire width will be on a 17mm rim?
I imagine it will be spot on.
Great review, thanks JOM! Looking forward to trying these when my WTB Byways wear out. (Also, hopefully spelling out J O M will cut down on the "John" mentions, haha)
Haha it's a little difficult for some apparently.
Trouble is with all these tyres is that they puncture way to easily... I'm running wtb raddlers and they are great but even though I'm using stans sealant with glitter in it they still puncture all the time. I don't want to but I've considered fitting a set of schwalbe Marathon Plus.
Maybe I'm running them too hard, I ride them at 60psi
The side edges defy physics... looking at them, they look like they would offer no corner grip. Do they?
You think someone calling themselves "bikebudha01" would know.
@@GravelCyclist I am on my fourth set of gravel tires. Yet to find the 'right' tire...
@@bikebudha01 Wow. My go to tyre for the unexpected is the Panaracer Gravelking SK. I've ridden all across the USA, three Australian states, and the environs of Girona, Spain. Great choice.
Thanks!
Tricky to find the link on the presale, any chance you could post it?
I have an email into Panaracer, will respond if they finally put the tires onto their site, this is a bummer.
Christopher, visit the website article, I have updated links for the presale.
Gravel Cyclist thank you
Great review, think i'm going to go with these on my new diverge. just wondering what wheels those are that youre running them on.
Roval Terra CLX 700c in this video, the review of those wheels is linked in the video description.
@@GravelCyclist I was multitasking the first time I watched. Caught you mention them on the second watching. Thanks.
Great tire
Just bought the GK slicks. Should have wait a couple of months...
This always happens!
Why no subtitles? Thanks.
Hello, I believe RUclips is having a technical issue with the closed captions today, usually they are available with all of my videos. You will have to try again another time, sorry.
@@GravelCyclist Thanks and congratulations for your great channel.
Any idea when/where we can buy these in Europe?
You really need to contact Panaracer with that question, sorry!
Is it tube less ready
If you watched the video, you would know the answer.
SS = semi slick. SK = small knob
You should perform a roll down test vs perception.
@@GravelCyclist Yeah, that's possibly one way to do it, but apart from the perception they're measurably slow even compared with say a gatorskin, according to my strava. An easy 15mph ride on 25mm gators would be a 14mph ride on 28mm gravelkings
hows the durability ?
Still going very well after five weeks, longer term would give a better picture.
SS rear and SK front might be the perfect set up 🤔
Give it a go!
👍🏻 recently did that myself with the limited edition “ginger” color scheme 🤘🏻😆🤘🏻
will a 29er wheelset with that tire?
Yes, mount up anything greater in width than 35mm and you should have no problems.
I have existing 29er rims,that means I just use same rims for gravel 35c ,38c ,40c to 43c?
Yes, shouldn't be an issue. I've run 29'er wheels with tyres from 35mm to 50mm. As an FYI, 29'and 700c are the same size, but 29'er rims generally have wider rim beds, which is why you really should run 35 or 38mm wide at minimum.
I’m confused as to why the “SS” is for a Chevy care.. and not “Super Slick”….
I don't make the rules, Semi-Slick according to Panaracer, and Super Sport, in the case of Chevrolet.
Great video, are this tires available in the market, where I can get them? Thanks
Good news, this link will take you to Panaracer's website - bit.ly/2WEFCZU - also, 700c x 38mm is now available!
Technically available, but supply chains are messed up because of the pandemic. European shops don't seem to carry any, as far as Google shows.
Gravelking SS or WTB Byway if I'm going with 35c? anyone with some experiences for both?
I have ridden and reviewed both (Byway review is on the website), I prefer the Gravelking SS. Lighter and faster, but I would likely choose the Plus version for additional puncture protection.
@@GravelCyclist Thanks, gonna go with the normal SS after watching your review. Over here in Ontario we have pretty smooth gravel trails so I think it will do
@@E5T4T3 Nice, and you'll save a little weight too. I reckon you will be happy with your decision.
I really wish Panaracer made a 40mm size for their gravel range. 35mm expanding to 38 is ok but for a frame rated to 40mm but their 43mm expanding to 45mm probably wouldn't make it.
Paddy, 700c x 38mm is now available, this was an update since the video was launched. Check their online store here - bit.ly/2WEFCZU
All the 38c GravelKings are actually ETRTO 40-622, so on a reasonably wide rim they should be at least 40. I’m not sure why they list them at 38c.
Noice :)
0:24 I love how australians can change their moind... Cause I can't
Am I the only one who manages to mount tubeless tyres with the valve cores left in the valve?
You must be special.
It never occurred to me to remove them, so no, you aren't the only one.
I’ve never seen this done before. Interesting approach, but I don’t see why. Nice review though
@@GravelCyclist Heh, don't know about that. But I do know it's a hell of a lot easier.
@@chrisprice2200 I like to get maximum air, especially without using a compressor. Different technique for sure.
The big problem with SS is hundreds of rubber barbs from manufacturing. They are screwing up the aero gains from any nice deep wheels you bought. Shame. I would have liked the SS tire a lot.
You could always get busy with a nail clipper :)
👍
“And then split from that ride and ride some gravel”
Ha! But pebble throw is not only annoying for wheel suckers, also for my downtube.
Haha good point. If you ride naked titanium, no problem! Think about applying a clear mylar frame protector beneath your downtube.
@@GravelCyclist as a matter of fact I am riding naked Ti. But still, that sound of pebbles slowly sand-blasting it...... I could live without that!
I'm an un-trend setter !
That's a shame.
hmmm SS here in Europe is an unfortunate name to be honest
What about Chevrolet SS? Learn from history, else people will repeat it.
OMG I hope Panaracer don't market this as "SS." It will be a total PR nightmare for Panaracer if they do.
You're about the 10th person to mention the "SS" reference. I understand the point you're making, as an FYI, Chevrolet have marketed various "SS" versions of their performance-oriented vehicles.
ss= semislick
Or... super sport as I prefer to call it :)
@@GravelCyclist Can you put tubes in these? Thanks.
@@shatakii Yes you can. Good luck!
