I have been doing keto for over a year. I haven't been able to get my sugars down below 140. it stays steady but if I do eat any carbs I go up to 200+ and carry that number for days.. I have to walk every 2 hours and drink ACV to get it back to under 200. Even OMAD it won't come down. The only other thing I do That works is fasting for 24-36 hours. I don't spike but it just doesn't come down below 150 on a steady . I do use a cgm.

I have opted to put my avocado on my taco bowls along with my black olives which also cost ww points and I feel Fuller and I'm actually losing weight and maintaining muscle
Middle Georgia USA.. catching the replay.. 110 to 120 fasting dawn syndrome..was on metformin MANY YEARs. BS was going up and they wanted to increase meds etc. I decided to go low carb, then Keto 3 years ago. off meds lost 70 lbs, lowered bp meds, but can't get the the high morning bs down. I eat under 20 carbs a week. if I fast I lose more weight. I am 76 5 ft 2 and 122 lbs A1c 5.2. I need 100-110 protein per day and eat 2 meals most days, during my eating window.
I'd get your insulin checked and if it's in an ideal range I would not worry about the elevated morning glucose as som elevation is normal and to be expected and your A1c is in an optimal range.
@@mayankpatel5109high glucose before dawn is an insulin problem. Get an CGM, or check you glucose around 6am first thing in the morning . If Dawn phenomenon brings glucose from 90 to 120, then that is fine. If your glucose is above 100 all night long, that is not fine.
Fasting glucose 120 but but a1c is 5.0. How do you make sense of that? On keto for a year and on carnivore for last three months. Started at 301 lbs and now 226 lbs. blood pressure is now 120/65. 74 yr old male.
This means your insulin resistance is still strong. My hba1c was 5.5 when my fasting was 120. Adding prolonged fasting of 3-5 days cut deep into this problem. It reduced my fasting insulin from 120 to 90 range. It did take a few times to reach 3 day fasting. At the time, I already had no problem with 36 hours fasting and hba1c stay between 5.2-5.6. But fasting glucose constantly above 100, or even 140 after a big meal from the day before. This is why I want to try 3 day fasting to bring it down. I failed first time around 40 hrs, 2nd time around 52 hrs, third time around 58 hrs. Fourth time, I actually passed the 3 day mark, made into 80 hours. 😂 . Lost around 8 lbs during this whole process. My fasting glucose is now between 80-90, never above 100 if I do not feast. What is even better, it broke my weight loss plateau. I still have about 15 lb to lose to reach my ideal weight. Now only 7 lb to go.

Hi Dr. Nolte. I just did your ideal body weight calculation and I think that it might be flawed like the BMI calculation is. I am male 6'4", 230 lbs and wear 36" waist pants. I am not overly athletic but considered in decent shape. There have been times when I have dieted down to close to 220 lbs and people remark that I look "thin". According to your calculation I would need to be at 202 lbs to be ideal. Clearly build and muscle content can skew these numbers. I would really like to know what "my ideal weight" would be. I believe that 202 lbs would actually be an unhealthy weight for me.
Yes this ideal body weight calculation is certainly an "estimate" and is person specific based on their body type. I wouldn't focus on the "weight" part of this equation as much as it's utilization for a daily protein target. The other way you could estimate is to look at a BMI chart and find a weight in the green zone for your protein target. But this is actually pretty similar to the calculation I provided for your height.
@@drmorgannolte Thank you for that clarification. I (along with most people) struggle with how to consume (in my case) over 200 gms of protein per day consistently. BTW, fantastic and comprehensive video. Thanks for the highest quality content.
Continuous glucose monitor (CGM) testing fluid is not the same fluid (blood) as a finger prick. The numbers are not meant to match. I have worn Dexcom for 4 years now and have never calibrated once.
140 lbs and I thought I should have 60 g of protein a day you're saying I should have a 140 g omg . I I'm getting very low protein ty for the info as I guess I need to over double my protein WOW 🤯
I don’t eat that much carbs. But, I probably eat about 100g a day. I want to lose 10 more pounds and I found out that I had to ditch the whole grain bread in the morning. Which I use to get fiber, but I can supplement until I lose those last 10 pounds. I can eat the whole grain bread and maintain my weight. But, I’ve also noticed that I can eat sourdough toast! That does nothing to my weight.
If my A1C is 5.8 (pre-diabetes) and fasting glucose is 95 mg/dL, but my fasting insulin is low at 3.7 you/ml and Triglycerides is 40 mg/dL, HDL is 64 mg/dL, Triglycerides/HDL is below 1.0 at 0.63. My Homa IR is also below 1.0 at 0.9. Do I have insulin resistance with the high A1C despite all other markers are normal?
You should get a glycated albumin to check average long-term glucose because with those numbers, the A1c has to be off. I've seen suggested by other physicians that eating well will extend the lifespan of your erythrocyte and give incorrect information.
@@jayjenkins4384 Thank you for sharing the info. I wear CGM and my base glucose level is between 95-103 and the Standard deviation is low at 7-11. I think the A1C is correct as my base glucose is higher than optimal level of 83-85. But my insulin is low. So I am confused how can my insulin is low but my blood sugar is high. I eat protein center diet.
I'm eating in a 5 hour window. I eat probably about 2-3 cups of mixed raw vegetables with a few grams of carbs from oil vinager mix/ Italian dressing with garlic then between 4-6 ounces of meat plus 2 boiled eggs, then approx a cup of mixed berries. Generally I've actually been eating that amount in 2 hrs+ and find it difficult to eat any More than that for the day. My ideal weight roughly according to your guidelines at 5'11" would be between 170-180 . My fasting blood sugar is currently ranging between 135-165. I'm been on the regiment for almost 4 weeks. My sugars have occasionally gone down as much as to 110 after eating eating but now they seem to be steading around 135-145. No meds Insulin shows no effect nor metformin. Ideas??

Thanks for the input. I had been considering these possibilities before. I suppose I'll try this for a few days to see if it helps.

Hi. Wondering if you are fasting for 14+ hours. That makes it even harder to keep your protein levels up. 1g per pound of body weight?

No meds
Insulin shows no effect nor metformin.

Keep your total carb intake below 20g/day - your blood sugar will be below 100 in two to four weeks.
A) When you are first starting, you need to eat whenever you are hungry.
B) Also, anytime you eat, you should eat until you are undeniably full.
C) Make a concentrated effort to eat plenty of animal fat (including butter).
Doing A, B, C will help suppress your carb/sugar cravings which are the #1 obstacle for people with elevated blood sugar.
I am happy to explain more, answer questions, or address concerns.
@@Hertz2laughI'm assuming you have been successful with this route. It's a little different than what she is saying but I can see where I added some items to my original mix of vegetables that it seems could have impacted my blood sugar at a point that I had started to see it going down then I added a little of cheese and occasionally some chick peas and it started to go higher. Thanks for the input. I had been considering these possibilities before. I suppose I'll try this for a few days to see if it helps. I was initially throwing all the anti oxidants I could at my body help destroy a possible tumor and to dissolve a blood clot using almonds and some other variety of nuts.
@@GeorgiaThriftNutz I lost 65lbs of excess fat in 8 months.
Reversed my prediabetes (my HBA1C is down to 5.4)
My blood sugar levels are between 90 and 100.
I no longer have any cravings for sweets and carbs.
My sex-drive and motivation to exercise have returned.
The list of benefits I have experienced from keeping my total carbs below 20g/day goes on and on.
I wouldn't recommend it to you if I hadn't tested it on myself first.
@@Hertz2laugh Do to my immediate health concern I guess I mainly have been focused on it but confused and impatient with the blood sugar. I'm literally came along way from 394 to 130th in a 4 week of time. I just feel pressured by the Drs to take these meds or insulin I guess. Thanks again

For the protein gram weights, cooked or uncooked meats?

I am in the number eight and I have been using the seven grain bread instead of white
Also I've heard that if you put rice that's cooked or potatoes in the refrigerator it takes some of the starch out of it
Also if you put white bread in the freezer and then take it out it takes out some of the starch also
This is true but not meaningful -- you will still be getting WAY more carbs than you can handle from the potato and bread.
@@Hertz2laugh OK thanks
