Every time I mention insulin resistance to anyone, they look at me as though I've just begun speaking chinese., a fairly simple concept that is still being either suppressed or looked at as an insignificant aspect to health!.... its AMAZING how long someone can have insulin resistance before their glucose rises to a "worrisome" level.......... and all the while, all those years your insulin was being driven out of control as your doctor gave you a thumbs up on your way out of the freekin door!
It's a matter of what is being taught in schools. Health classes in high school are based on govt rec's that are not as evidence-based as they should be. I would dare to guess that most higher educational programs are only now starting to incorporate lifestyle medicine into their curriculum. For example, my alma mater the University of Nebraska Medical Center invited me to do a 2-hour lecture for physical therapy students on obesity. They are really getting a lecture on insulin resistance. It's a matter of getting the word out any way possible and influencing government agencies and institutes of higher learning to educate the public and health care professionals. I didn't learn about insulin resistance in school or my residency. I found it following the bread crumbs in clinical practice.

I have an aunt in her 80's. She tells me she has normal blood sugar. I was wondering why her mid section looks as if she is 9 months pregnant. I was surprised to find out you could still be insulin resistant and have low blood sugar. That was an amazing revelation to me.

Using insulin to manage blood glucose is like digging a water line with dynamite. Severe COVID treatment made me an insulin dependent type 2 diabetic in one day (steroid induced diabetes). After two years of injecting insulin four times a day and multiple low glucose issues, an endocrinologist got me off of insulin injections using other drugs. He also started me using a Dexcom continuous glucose monitor which turned out to be the most important change. The fast feedback from the monitor makes it very clear what foods I should not eat.

But if you are type two you don’t have to stop there … you can go keto and get off all diabetes meds I had a a1c of 14.4 when my docs (who don’t know what better because that’s what they were taught in medical school ) told me I HAD to start eating 45 grams of carbs at each meal and shooting insulin … I refused .. walked out and lived on eggs , canned tuna and oysters , chicken breast and big green leafy salads … type 2 diabetes reversed.. JUST MAKE SURE YOU WORK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AND TELL HIM WHAT YOUR PLANNING ON DOING or your going to get dangerous lows ….and don’t ask him .. TELL HIM .. it’s your body and your health NOT HIS

I made 5 pounds of ghee last week and added 5 bulbs of fresh raw grated garlic to it. It sits on the stove in a jar with a big spoon in it so whatever we cook we add a few spooss full of garlic "butter".. we never buy packaged food. So we're so healthy and we smell so good!

Dr Bickman brought incredible information to your channel. Excellent questions were asked to bring out signs, symptoms, and ways to resolve insulin resistance. The way Dr Bickman finished his time here by focusing on the importance of his job as a husband and father showed his true character, exceptional.

My doctor told me the CAC scan was a joke and that she would not give me a prescription. I tried to send her the literature she wouldn't acknowledge them. I finally found a doctor that would do these tests.

I believe I am insulin resistance but I have low blood pressure, long with my entire family, swollen legs. No heart problems. I went on intermittent fasting and lost my belly along with 55 lbs. When I put a few drops of oil of oregano in my water, for a week, the swelling went down. Wheat and alcohol makes me sick.
Swelling goes down when insulin is lowered. The kidney is manipulated by aldosterone to either retain salt and water or pee it out. Both fasting and ketogenic both do that, but fasting is faster. 🙏
If possible, I recommend getting your fasting insulin and glucose checked to do the HOMA score as I talked about in a recent video if you want to know if you have IR. Congrats on the weight loss with IF. That's great!
@@Omegacrafton There is no such thing as "essential" oregano oil. The term essential means that the human body cannot live without it. And thus, there is no such thing as an essential carbohydrate. There is no such thing as an essential plant or vegetable. You can get all your essential nutrients from an animal based diet. Animal proteins and fats are far superior to plants. And plants contain anti-nutrients that prevent the absorption of most of the beneficiary nutrients inherent in vegetation.
I love the idea of bringing the consequences of our eating behaviors into the present with a continuous monitoring device. When I started Keto, I used the reward of my glucose monitor's low numbers to motivate myself. That gamification really pushed me to keep away from carbs and still does.

Wow... "If someone has high blood pressure and are overweight they are insulin resistant!" Before I was diagnosed as a diabetic my doctor started recommending a "healthy diet" that was low in fat and red meat! Two years later I was exhibiting symptoms of diabetes! What you're telling me is his failure to recognize insulin resistance in it's early stage resulted in him giving me advice that pushed me into becoming a full diabetic.
in my experience, I agree with your statements. I got on Keto just pure luck I found a video on it and listened, and tried because I did not want to take the medicine, started with an M, can't think of it right now. I also found out I was prediabetic 3 years before I was diagnosed with diabetes Type 2. But I was not alerted at all, and didn't know enough about doing my own research, and reading my own lab-test results. You can bet I do that now!!
@@nwcountry Well that was over 15 years ago and the records were never put into a database back then, especially considering it was private practice not a large institution. So it would be rather difficult for me to review the records now.

Hi Dr. Morgan Nolte - I must say this video is so interesting and informing and for me completly relevant. I am diabetic type 1 and I also noticed that I am insulin resistant - i noticed that we i took 10 u of rapid insuline - the blood sugar did not getting lower, only after 2 hours - i spoke to my diabetic doctor and she just told me to take more units of insuline. I did not go into this advise, instead I started with low carb diet, stopped to eat bread, cereal and less fruit, and here i had a much better result to treat my type 1 diabetis. my late husband had fatty liver disease and dark rough skin patches -- also overweight-----I was diabetic -- and they did not know what caused fatty liver15years ago..... now I have gone from 180 pounds on 60 units of insulin to no meds and about 124 pounds 5'7"
Why We Get Sick. The book is great. It's a little difficult for the common Joe like me but it also made SO much sense!! The reason his book is doing so good is because we were given BAD info, bad eating and nutrition advise for 40 years. We were told to follow the food pyramid, eat margarine, vegetable oils, low fat, lots of breads and cereals. We followed the USDA guidelines and it only made our health worse! I could see my Type2 getting worse for 20 years. Thank God for Ben Bikman. I'm down 30 pounds and using 70% less insulin now. (in 6 months!) I'm working on reversing my T2D!

I’m only 18 and I am struggling with high blood pressure, lower back pain, loss of my period, dizziness & blurry vision. Doctors tell me to eat healthy and workout. But I’m struggling. I want to do better for myself. I am scared for my future if I do not solve this... Thankyou for this video
If doctors are telling you "eat healthy and workout" then I assume you've seen at least two doctors, which means it's unlikely that you have a serious disease. I'm guessing you don't even feel like working out, so you have to start with diet. Stop drinking soft drinks and fruit juices. Do not eat dried fruit. Stop eating all sweets. Stop snacking - eat no more than 3 meals per day. Start reading food labels and avoid ALL foods with added sugar. Food manufacturers are very sneaky about how they list the ingredients, especially sugar, in their food products. You will to need to learn to recognize "sugar" when you see it listed as something else. Examples: dextrose, evaporated cane juice, corn syrup, etc. are all SUGAR. A good way to avoid this problem is simply to avoid processed food altogether. You may need to get even more strict, but what I've written above would be a very good start and will be sufficient for most people, especially your age. PS: Honey, brown sugar, maple syrup, agave nectar, etc. may seem "healthy" but they are not. Treat them just like you would sugar -- avoid them.

I lost 40 lbs in 3 months after going on keto. Back in my bodybuilder days I ate 8,500 calories a day (all bad foods). I've also been diagnosed with Diabetes, Afib and chronic constipation. After going on keto all those have been reversed as well.
@@datsuntoyy I wish health had a "taste" so I had some desire for it. As of now it's more of an intellectual curiosity. Also, not being particularly attached to this form of existence, I don't have anything pushing me to be healthier. If I know anything in life, it's that (imo) nothing will ever taste as good as sugar.

Graduated as an RNA aka RPN in 60's and now a few yrs ago in early 70's A1C hit 7.0. I was surprised about 2,000-2,500 cal a few yrs ago. My 1990's university nutrition text had 3,500 cal per day and with physical activity said 500-700 more which is 4,000-4,200. It is good to know that is too much. The insulin paradigm which i started six weeks ago allowed me to lose 13 lb.already. So thank you for programs such as this. God bless.
My husband and I got CAC test a year ago. Mine was below normal (100 I believe) His was 1500. So he goes to a cardiologist who doesn’t think that test tells them anything. He said they can’t tell if the calcium is inside or outside of the artery. So he essentially brushed it off. So we then got the Lifeline screening tests that are advertised on TV. Those showed we had no issues. Then last May, my husband had a heart attack. Got 3 stents and was sent home. Two weeks later he had another heart attack. Got 2 more stents. My husband is 67 yrs old. Is not overweight. And did not have high cholesterol. He does have genetics not in his favor. Today he’s lost 10 lbs and is finally motivated to exercising consistently. I on the other hand have IR and need to lose weight. That’s why I’m watching this video. I’m doing intermittent fasting and keto. My ketone number after 6 days is 3.7. But my glucose was 119 fasting. Yesterday was 109. I’m trying to be patient. Is my keto journey in conflict with my husbands heart journey?

Weight control definitely gets more challenging with age, and for women especially after menopause when estrogen goes down and insulin resistance goes up. Thanks for all the comments on this video I'm glad you learned from it.
Weight control gets harder as growth hormone goes down (and estrogen after menopause). That's why most women struggle to lose weight trying what they did in their 30s and 40s. Their program doesn't match the problem anymore.
This was a huge help! ‘Was dx’d with Insulin Resistance >25 yrs ago, but no instructions were given, except to take Metformin. That med didn’t agree with my gut, so I stopped. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!

I’m glad to have discovered this channel. I have been following Dr. Bikman’s work for some time along with Dr. Fung and have their books. I believe that they, and you, represent a step forward in human health.
When my doc mentioned NAFLD, I went down the rabbit hole. Low carb, intermittent fasting, as soon as I digested the Krebs cycle and the rest, through Robert Lustig. Now binging (this is a bad term I know) on this material. And yes, nutritionism is the main problem, plus an emphasis on medications and specialized treatment instead of functional preventive medicine. I followed the advise for decades, my diabetes got worse. No doubt it’s getting better, now…look ma…no exogenous insulin. Slowly graduating to longer fasts. But still need to be careful since still on some orals. Oh and my BP is down to a quarter of my starting dose… It makes sense. But medical providers never mentioned any of this. I went digging myself. As a former medic…I get why, but that does not stop my anger at the system. I know it’s not a conspiracy, but dang it, looks like one. One last thing, my intro to this was Dr. Robert Lustig. It went from there. Dr Fung and Dr Bickman are next
Awesome story thanks for sharing and way to take control of your health. I'm with you that it is very frustrating the lack of specific and detailed advice given by many primary care provider's just isn't cutting it. I don't think it's a conspiracy as most people I know in healthcare truly want to help. How billing is set up is a huge barrier as they can only see someone for a short amount of time. And as you know, it takes a lot of explaining to get this to "click" with people enough to motivate them to change their lifestyle vs looking to their doctor to fix them.
@@drmorgannolte I know. Off insulin. Off BP meds and as of this morning off the first oral. It takes motivation. But it also takes work from patients. I explained to my BIL that he could reverse his T2D (newly diagnosed). His reaction, I am not going to fast. His absolute fear is T3D, in the family. Not even that is enough of a motivator to even look at it.

It is interesting to note that there is another book written by two doctors (Nesse & Williams) in 1994 with the same title and it mentions "insulin" only 4 times in its 300 pages, and that too about effect of mother's insulin on fetus. Nothing about "insulin resistance"!!!
I pitched a book idea seven years ago and publishers said no. Then in October one said yes and could I deliver the manuscript in four months.... So I put my life on hold and did it... it will be published next year.

He gives a lot of information. I have watched other videos that are right to the point about insulin. I wish his videos were shorter though and to the point. I moved this video forward to miss too much information that I felt was not necessary. He does give good information.
They should treat insulin resistance before people ever develop "pre-diabetes." Insulin resistance is the disease, diabetes is the symptom. You develop insulin resistance prior to being diagnosed as a diabetic or even pre-diabetic.
Not much of a chance a Dr will test for or tell you about insulin resistance with Nixon changing the charter of America’s medical system in 1973 to serve you & me to for PROFIT entities. As now all about the $ as promoting wellness does not generate enough $’s! 😳 As is said often follow the money and will find the truth. Drs have a test for insulin resistance plus with their medical training can look at a person & know they are insulin resistant but all they will ever test is for ones blood sugar unless get down on knees and beg to be tested for insulin resistance. The drs are just waiting with baited breath testing do blood sugar until pancreases crashes & dies sending a person to metaforum or insulin land so they have a lifetime cash flow from a persons health woes. People should get together and file a class action law suit against the medical profession for malpractice as the drs know what they are doing for their own economic benefit and to a person detriment for their health. As today’s health care is socialized medicine in disguise as neither provides HEALTH or CARE! This is such a sad fact but reality! 🙄

thank you, dr morgan, and thank you, dr ben. in my physical therapy education 26 years ago, and in practice up to the past year, insulin resistance was a non-factor in patient care. it was so, of course, until i began a quest to understand what it is, which continues. now i have realized that it affects lots of those who seek my help. without understanding it, i cannot possibly treat someone's condition in the most complete manner at my disposal. how it began for me: my mom sending me a link to dr lustig's "sugar: the bitter truth" lecture. thank you, too, dr lustig and dr fung as well, for exposing me to the information my patients need to have in order to live healthier lives!!!!!

I was very disheartened when I was told I was prediabetic. I am very conservative with my sugar intake and overall diet; I do not smoke, not drink alcohol. I am also 65 years old, not retired, and fairly active. First, I thought it was familial because my older brother and younger sister are both diabetics, but in their case, my sister was almost obese when diagnosed, my brother not very overweight but eats everything. My BP, trygl, HDL, thyroid, liver, and kidney are within normal. My LDL was slightly elevated, but the ratio is normal too. So what other causes could trigger my IR. I read some studies that if you vit D, B12 and magnesium are low you can develop IR. Those parameters were low in my case. So I am working on bringing them to the normal range also because I show as osteopenic too. I am exercising every day now and following a low-carb diet (though I have restricted excess sugars for most of my adult life); I am not a heavy carnivore. I eat meat maybe two times a week. I have lost the 2 extra pounds I was carrying beyond my normal weight of 128Lb. I do not want to lose too much. I hope I can harness this problem because I do not want to be a pharma dependant and want to avoid the suffering of DM2 I have seen because I am also a nurse. So you see; DM2 is not only a disease of the obese and uncontrolled eater. The thought of possibly becoming diabetic was the last in my mind when I went for my first Medicare visit.

@@carolj.3175 Some of us need to go further in this fight against DM. I adopted the keto diet with 40gr or less of carbs daily, and exercise, lately, I have been going to the gym because of osteoporosis. My prediabetes is gone now, and I am intending to continue on this path for the rest of my life. This is what works for me, and it is actually very doable. I eat only real, as much natural/organic food as possible, and lots of water, coffee, and tea. I use half of the stevia packet in my coffee and some whipping cream. I also do intermittent fasting for two meals a day with the occasional snack (low carbs all the way). Most people can do this with no problems. Good luck to you! This dr is very good in his advice. I learned a lot from him.

I've had sugar/ insulin problems since childhood. I was about 7 years old when I had a high feeling after eating pancake syrup. It was surprising and a little scary. I took that glucola at the Navy hospital when I was pregnant and I wanted to die I felt so bad. I worked at a very stressful job in my 40's and I got so sick I had to leave my job.

Knowledge is amazing and wonderful. I wish it solved the problem of the elephant of carb addiction overruling the driver of us wanting to eat low carb.
Carb addiction is a misnomer. But if I have become accustomed to them, and I wish to change, I have to do things that are likely to activate the alternative fuel source, namely our stores of fat. I had to work at it for a few weeks with lowering the carbohydrates, increasing healthy fats (such as olive oil), and increasing my hours of fasting each day. Going at it too quickly is likely to cause very low glucose levels which can be harmful. But when the metabolism is is more 'flexible', it is better able to produce it's own glucose in the liver, which is called gluconeogenesis. And I then experienced much less hunger.
So can I diabetic eat red meat or not? This is very informative interview. I was diagnosed in 2019. I had no signs at all. It happened one night and boom.
We do recommend red meat 2-3x/week, but biasing your meat intake to fish and poultry. Each person's needs will be different based on their personal risk for disease and preferences.

In my 40s I had so many skin tags I cut them off regularly, arm pits, inner thighs, neck even on my eyelids. That was 30 years ago and in hindsight it clearly was insulin resistance. I've been low-carb some 15 years and those stopped. Back then I was never without a can of coca cola in my hand... I developed PVCs and quit the coca cola at 42.

Dr Ford Brewer prefers CIMT. His theory is Calcium score will not determine if the plaque is soft or hard. He says that he is looking at soft plaque as it is the cause of blood clotting on a heart attack and stroke. Dr. Brewer also require inflamation test. As a type 1 diabetic I've been using a Constant Glucose monitor for +4 years. I can tell you that oils are a real danger for insulin resistance. I can have a meal of red meat, cheese, and nuts and my blood glucose will stay significant higher than if I only eat carbs despite accurately measuring the required amount of insulin.

Thanks for subscribing. Regarding the glycemic index, it's an okay place to start, but doesn't account for fructose at all. Fructose won't cause a blood sugar response, so high fructose foods will be lower on the glycemic index, even though they are worse for your health than the high glucose foods. I got a CaC scan although it was a high score my doctor discounted it bc he said the Ca deposits where on the outside of the arteries not inside. Is that even something the CaC scan distinguishes? I’ve always felt my doctor treats me different than my husband (same doctor) even when we have similar issues or blood work. The doctor tends to really jump on any heart issues for my husband but ignores the same test results for me.

I've been avoiding omega 6's and eating very good. Got my A1C down to 4.9. I still feel that I"m insulin resistant, but I do notice if I do spike, which is extremely rare, it doesn't last as long and comes down super quick. 99% of the time I spike 125 or less after a meal. Every few months I eat something bad, and yep I still get the spike. I stopped taking my insulin because my A1C is so low, as long as I eat right, I don't need insulin.

I am so confused with Insulin Resistance. I've been listening to both Ben Bikman PhD and Cyrus Khambatta PhD, both experts on the subject, yet their approaches to reversing IR are polar opposite. Can you get Cyrus Khambatta on the show as well? I dream that one day we can have those two together to have an intelligent conversation.
What an excellent idea, thank you so much for sharing that with me! I'll put him on my potential guest list. I haven't look as much into his stuff as Dr. Bikman and Dr. Fung, but when I do, I'm guessing that a whole foods approach will be at the center of both. Having those two together would be epic!
@@drmorgannolte Having those two together indeed would be epic. Both are experts, but one is HCLF and the other is HFLC -- polar opposite. To be honest, although HFLC sounds intuitive (do not take in carbs when diabetes has too much glucose in the blood), I admit that the analysis from Cyrus Khambatta on why we get insulin resistant sounds more convincing to me and his method appears to fix the root cause. Definitely look into his interviews (e.g. Rich Roll and Physicians Committee channels).
So, can I eventually get A1 C (mine is 5.7) down and reset my body so that I can occasionally indulge in simple carbs?? I cannot commit to never being able to have pasta. I am 58 and 5'4" and 212 pounds. About 10 years ago, I was around 185 and felt a lot better.

Every time I mention insulin resistance to anyone, they look at me as though I've just begun speaking chinese., a fairly simple concept that is still being either suppressed or looked at as an insignificant aspect to health!.... its AMAZING how long someone can have insulin resistance before their glucose rises to a "worrisome" level.......... and all the while, all those years your insulin was being driven out of control as your doctor gave you a thumbs up on your way out of the freekin door!
It's a matter of what is being taught in schools. Health classes in high school are based on govt rec's that are not as evidence-based as they should be. I would dare to guess that most higher educational programs are only now starting to incorporate lifestyle medicine into their curriculum. For example, my alma mater the University of Nebraska Medical Center invited me to do a 2-hour lecture for physical therapy students on obesity. They are really getting a lecture on insulin resistance. It's a matter of getting the word out any way possible and influencing government agencies and institutes of higher learning to educate the public and health care professionals. I didn't learn about insulin resistance in school or my residency. I found it following the bread crumbs in clinical practice.

Using insulin to manage blood glucose is like digging a water line with dynamite. Severe COVID treatment made me an insulin dependent type 2 diabetic in one day (steroid induced diabetes). After two years of injecting insulin four times a day and multiple low glucose issues, an endocrinologist got me off of insulin injections using other drugs. He also started me using a Dexcom continuous glucose monitor which turned out to be the most important change. The fast feedback from the monitor makes it very clear what foods I should not eat.

But if you are type two you don’t have to stop there … you can go keto and get off all diabetes meds I had a a1c of 14.4 when my docs (who don’t know what better because that’s what they were taught in medical school ) told me I HAD to start eating 45 grams of carbs at each meal and shooting insulin … I refused .. walked out and lived on eggs , canned tuna and oysters , chicken breast and big green leafy salads … type 2 diabetes reversed.. JUST MAKE SURE YOU WORK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AND TELL HIM WHAT YOUR PLANNING ON DOING or your going to get dangerous lows ….and don’t ask him .. TELL HIM .. it’s your body and your health NOT HIS

I made 5 pounds of ghee last week and added 5 bulbs of fresh raw grated garlic to it. It sits on the stove in a jar with a big spoon in it so whatever we cook we add a few spooss full of garlic "butter".. we never buy packaged food. So we're so healthy and we smell so good!

fought the overweight battle my entire life. Every fad diet, I've done it and failed. Never, not once has my physician mentioned insulin resistance. I've had to scour youtube for help and answers. Any doctor in todays age that isn't talking to their patients about insulin resistance is not worth seeing. I have been practicing IF and OMAD since May 1, 2021. My doctor told me the CAC scan was a joke and that she would not give me a prescription. I tried to send her the literature she wouldn't acknowledge them. I finally found a doctor that would do these tests.

I believe I am insulin resistance but I have low blood pressure, long with my entire family, swollen legs. No heart problems. I went on intermittent fasting and lost my belly along with 55 lbs. When I put a few drops of oil of oregano in my water, for a week, the swelling went down. Wheat and alcohol makes me sick.
Swelling goes down when insulin is lowered. The kidney is manipulated by aldosterone to either retain salt and water or pee it out. Both fasting and ketogenic both do that, but fasting is faster. 🙏

@@Omegacrafton There is no such thing as "essential" oregano oil. The term essential means that the human body cannot live without it. And thus, there is no such thing as an essential carbohydrate. There is no such thing as an essential plant or vegetable. You can get all your essential nutrients from an animal based diet. Animal proteins and fats are far superior to plants. And plants contain anti-nutrients that prevent the absorption of most of the beneficiary nutrients inherent in vegetation.
I love the idea of bringing the consequences of our eating behaviors into the present with a continuous monitoring device. When I started Keto, I used the reward of my glucose monitor's low numbers to motivate myself. That gamification really pushed me to keep away from carbs and still does.

Before I was diagnosed as a diabetic my doctor started recommending a "healthy diet" that was low in fat and red meat!
Two years later I was exhibiting symptoms of diabetes!
What you're telling me is his failure to recognize insulin resistance in it's early stage resulted in him giving me advice that pushed me into becoming a full diabetic.

in my experience, I agree with your statements. I got on Keto just pure luck I found a video on it and listened, and tried because I did not want to take the medicine, started with an M, can't think of it right now. I also found out I was prediabetic 3 years before I was diagnosed with diabetes Type 2. But I was not alerted at all, and didn't know enough about doing my own research, and reading my own lab-test results. You can bet I do that now!!

Well that was over 15 years ago and the records were never put into a database back then, especially considering it was private practice not a large institution. So it would be rather difficult for me to review the records now.

Hi Dr. Morgan Nolte - I must say this video is so interesting and informing and for me completly relevant. I am diabetic type 1 and I also noticed that I am insulin resistant - i noticed that we i took 10 u of rapid insuline - the blood sugar did not getting lower, only after 2 hours - i spoke to my diabetic doctor and she just told me to take more units of insuline. I did not go into this advise, instead I started with low carb diet, stopped to eat bread, cereal
and less fruit, and here i had a much better result to treat my type 1 diabetis. Thanks you for your interesting youtube program or video

my late husband had fatty liver disease and dark rough skin patches -- also overweight-----I was diabetic -- and they did not know what caused fatty liver15years ago..... now I have gone from 180 pounds on 60 units of insulin to no meds and about 124 pounds 5'7"
Why We Get Sick. The book is great. It's a little difficult for the common Joe like me but it also made SO much sense!! The reason his book is doing so good is because we were given BAD info, bad eating and nutrition advise for 40 years. We were told to follow the food pyramid, eat margarine, vegetable oils, low fat, lots of breads and cereals. We followed the USDA guidelines and it only made our health worse!
I could see my Type2 getting worse for 20 years. Thank God for Ben Bikman. I'm down 30 pounds and using 70% less insulin now. (in 6 months!) I'm working on reversing my T2D!

I’m only 18 and I am struggling with high blood pressure, lower back pain, loss of my period, dizziness & blurry vision. Doctors tell me to eat healthy and workout. But I’m struggling. I want to do better for myself. I am scared for my future if I do not solve this... Thankyou for this video
If doctors are telling you "eat healthy and workout" then I assume you've seen at least two doctors, which means it's unlikely that you have a serious disease.
I'm guessing you don't even feel like working out, so you have to start with diet.
Stop drinking soft drinks and fruit juices. Do not eat dried fruit. Stop eating all sweets. Stop snacking - eat no more than 3 meals per day. Start reading food labels and avoid ALL foods with added sugar.
Food manufacturers are very sneaky about how they list the ingredients, especially sugar, in their food products. You will to need to learn to recognize "sugar" when you see it listed as something else. Examples: dextrose, evaporated cane juice, corn syrup, etc. are all SUGAR. A good way to avoid this problem is simply to avoid processed food altogether.
You may need to get even more strict, but what I've written above would be a very good start and will be sufficient for most people, especially your age.
PS: Honey, brown sugar, maple syrup, agave nectar, etc. may seem "healthy" but they are not. Treat them just like you would sugar -- avoid them.

I lost 40 lbs in 3 months after going on keto. Back in my bodybuilder days I ate 8,500 calories a day (all bad foods). I've also been diagnosed with Diabetes, Afib and chronic constipation. After going on keto all those have been reversed as well.

Graduated as an RNA aka RPN in 60's and now a few yrs ago in early 70's A1C hit 7.0. I was surprised about 2,000-2,500 cal a few yrs ago. My 1990's university nutrition text had 3,500 cal per day and with physical activity said 500-700 more which is 4,000-4,200. It is good to know that is too much. The insulin paradigm which i started six weeks ago allowed me to lose 13 lb.already. So thank you for programs such as this. God bless.
My husband and I got CAC test a year ago. Mine was below normal (100 I believe) His was 1500. So he goes to a cardiologist who doesn’t think that test tells them anything. He said they can’t tell if the calcium is inside or outside of the artery. So he essentially brushed it off. So we then got the Lifeline screening tests that are advertised on TV. Those showed we had no issues. Then last May, my husband had a heart attack. Got 3 stents and was sent home. Two weeks later he had another heart attack. Got 2 more stents. My husband is 67 yrs old. Is not overweight. And did not have high cholesterol. He does have genetics not in his favor. Today he’s lost 10 lbs and is finally motivated to exercising consistently.
I on the other hand have IR and need to lose weight. That’s why I’m watching this video. I’m doing intermittent fasting and keto. My ketone number after 6 days is 3.7. But my glucose was 119 fasting. Yesterday was 109. I’m trying to be patient.
Is my keto journey in conflict with my husbands heart journey?
😲 After gaining weight from various different reasons throughout the years, and realizing now at almost 60 that I am not eating more than I did 5 years ago but yet still gaining weight, I knew something was drastically wrong. Learning a lot from you guys. ♥️

Weight control definitely gets more challenging with age, and for women especially after menopause when estrogen goes down and insulin resistance goes up. Thanks for all the comments on this video I'm glad you learned from it.
Weight control gets harder as growth hormone goes down (and estrogen after menopause). That's why most women struggle to lose weight trying what they did in their 30s and 40s. Their program doesn't match the problem anymore.

I’m glad to have discovered this channel. I have been following Dr. Bikman’s work for some time along with Dr. Fung and have their books. I believe that they, and you, represent a step forward in human health.

When my doc mentioned NAFLD, I went down the rabbit hole. Low carb, intermittent fasting, as soon as I digested the Krebs cycle and the rest, through Robert Lustig. Now binging (this is a bad term I know) on this material. And yes, nutritionism is the main problem, plus an emphasis on medications and specialized treatment instead of functional preventive medicine. I followed the advise for decades, my diabetes got worse. No doubt it’s getting better, now…look ma…no exogenous insulin.
Slowly graduating to longer fasts.
But still need to be careful since still on some orals. Oh and my BP is down to a quarter of my starting dose…
It makes sense. But medical providers never mentioned any of this. I went digging myself. As a former medic…I get why, but that does not stop my anger at the system. I know it’s not a conspiracy, but dang it, looks like one.
One last thing, my intro to this was Dr. Robert Lustig. It went from there. Dr Fung and Dr Bickman are next
Awesome story thanks for sharing and way to take control of your health. I'm with you that it is very frustrating the lack of specific and detailed advice given by many primary care provider's just isn't cutting it. I don't think it's a conspiracy as most people I know in healthcare truly want to help. How billing is set up is a huge barrier as they can only see someone for a short amount of time. And as you know, it takes a lot of explaining to get this to "click" with people enough to motivate them to change their lifestyle vs looking to their doctor to fix them.

It takes motivation. But it also takes work from patients. I explained to my BIL that he could reverse his T2D (newly diagnosed). His reaction, I am not going to fast.
His absolute fear is T3D, in the family. Not even that is enough of a motivator to even look at it.

Isn't it!? I highlighted about everything in his book. Loved it and he wrote it so succinctly.
It is interesting to note that there is another book written by two doctors (Nesse & Williams) in 1994 with the same title and it mentions "insulin" only 4 times in its 300 pages, and that too about effect of mother's insulin on fetus. Nothing about "insulin resistance"!!!
I pitched a book idea seven years ago and publishers said no. Then in October one said yes and could I deliver the manuscript in four months.... So I put my life on hold and did it... it will be published next year.

Insulin resistance is the disease, diabetes is the symptom. You develop insulin resistance prior to being diagnosed as a diabetic or even pre-diabetic.

Not much of a chance a Dr will test for or tell you about insulin resistance with Nixon changing the charter of America’s medical system in 1973 to serve you & me to for PROFIT entities. As now all about the $ as promoting wellness does not generate enough $’s! 😳 As is said often follow the money and will find the truth. Drs have a test for insulin resistance plus with their medical training can look at a person & know they are insulin resistant but all they will ever test is for ones blood sugar unless get down on knees and beg to be tested for insulin resistance. The drs are just waiting with baited breath testing do blood sugar until pancreases crashes & dies sending a person to metaforum or insulin land so they have a lifetime cash flow from a persons health woes. People should get together and file a class action law suit against the medical profession for malpractice as the drs know what they are doing for their own economic benefit and to a person detriment for their health. As today’s health care is socialized medicine in disguise as neither provides HEALTH or CARE! This is such a sad fact but reality! 🙄

thank you, dr morgan, and thank you, dr ben. in my physical therapy education 26 years ago, and in practice up to the past year, insulin resistance was a non-factor in patient care. it was so, of course, until i began a quest to understand what it is, which continues. now i have realized that it affects lots of those who seek my help. without understanding it, i cannot possibly treat someone's condition in the most complete manner at my disposal. how it began for me: my mom sending me a link to dr lustig's "sugar: the bitter truth" lecture. thank you, too, dr lustig and dr fung as well, for exposing me to the information my patients need to have in order to live healthier lives!!!!!

I was very disheartened when I was told I was prediabetic. I am very conservative with my sugar intake and overall diet; I do not smoke, not drink alcohol. I am also 65 years old, not retired, and fairly active. First, I thought it was familial because my older brother and younger sister are both diabetics, but in their case, my sister was almost obese when diagnosed, my brother not very overweight but eats everything. My BP, trygl, HDL, thyroid, liver, and kidney are within normal. My LDL was slightly elevated, but the ratio is normal too. So what other causes could trigger my IR. I read some studies that if you vit D, B12 and magnesium are low you can develop IR. Those parameters were low in my case. So I am working on bringing them to the normal range also because I show as osteopenic too. I am exercising every day now and following a low-carb diet (though I have restricted excess sugars for most of my adult life); I am not a heavy carnivore. I eat meat maybe two times a week. I have lost the 2 extra pounds I was carrying beyond my normal weight of 128Lb. I do not want to lose too much. I hope I can harness this problem because I do not want to be a pharma dependant and want to avoid the suffering of DM2 I have seen because I am also a nurse. So you see; DM2 is not only a disease of the obese and uncontrolled eater. The thought of possibly becoming diabetic was the last in my mind when I went for my first Medicare visit.

Me also! Turned 65 and very active, don't smoke, bit overweight all around the waist -ugh. Eat more cleanly than anyone I know. Shocked am pre diabetic. Drastic action being taken.
@@carolj.3175 Some of us need to go further in this fight against DM. I adopted the keto diet with 40gr or less of carbs daily, and exercise, lately, I have been going to the gym because of osteoporosis. My prediabetes is gone now, and I am intending to continue on this path for the rest of my life. This is what works for me, and it is actually very doable. I eat only real, as much natural/organic food as possible, and lots of water, coffee, and tea. I use half of the stevia packet in my coffee and some whipping cream. I also do intermittent fasting for two meals a day with the occasional snack (low carbs all the way). Most people can do this with no problems. Good luck to you! This dr is very good in his advice. I learned a lot from him.

I've had sugar/ insulin problems since childhood. I was about 7 years old when I had a high feeling after eating pancake syrup. It was surprising and a little scary. I took that glucola at the Navy hospital when I was pregnant and I wanted to die I felt so bad. I worked at a very stressful job in my 40's and I got so sick I had to leave my job.

@@drmorgannolte Hi Doctor, I would love to know how to address conditions such as pcos, insulin resistance, a high TSH and a big belly despite cutting out carbs, eating very healtlhy foods, exercising (HIIT) at least 4 times a week. It is so frustrating as the weight loss has plateaued. I have included IF as well, basically twice a week , a 16 hour fast.

Carb addiction is a misnomer. But if I have become accustomed to them, and I wish to change, I have to do things that are likely to activate the alternative fuel source, namely our stores of fat.
I had to work at it for a few weeks with lowering the carbohydrates, increasing healthy fats (such as olive oil), and increasing my hours of fasting each day.
Going at it too quickly is likely to cause very low glucose levels which can be harmful. But when the metabolism is is more 'flexible', it is better able to produce it's own glucose in the liver, which is called gluconeogenesis. And I then experienced much less hunger.
So can I diabetic eat red meat or not? This is very informative interview. I was diagnosed in 2019. I had no signs at all. It happened one night and boom.
We do recommend red meat 2-3x/week, but biasing your meat intake to fish and poultry. Each person's needs will be different based on their personal risk for disease and preferences.

In my 40s I had so many skin tags I cut them off regularly, arm pits, inner thighs, neck even on my eyelids. That was 30 years ago and in hindsight it clearly was insulin resistance. I've been low-carb some 15 years and those stopped. Back then I was never without a can of coca cola in my hand... I developed PVCs and quit the coca cola at 42.

Dr Ford Brewer prefers CIMT. His theory is Calcium score will not determine if the plaque is soft or hard. He says that he is looking at soft plaque as it is the cause of blood clotting on a heart attack and stroke.
Dr. Brewer also require inflamation test. HS CRP, Microalbumin to creatinine ratio, MPO and LP PLA2 test

As a type 1 diabetic I've been using a Constant Glucose monitor for +4 years. I can tell you that oils are a real danger for insulin resistance. I can have a meal of red meat, cheese, and nuts and my blood glucose will stay significant higher than if I only eat carbs despite accurately measuring the required amount of insulin.

Thanks for subscribing. Regarding the glycemic index, it's an okay place to start, but doesn't account for fructose at all. Fructose won't cause a blood sugar response, so high fructose foods will be lower on the glycemic index, even though they are worse for your health than the high glucose foods. I got a CaC scan although it was a high score my doctor discounted it bc he said the Ca deposits where on the outside of the arteries not inside. Is that even something the CaC scan distinguishes? I’ve always felt my doctor treats me different than my husband (same doctor) even when we have similar issues or blood work. The doctor tends to really jump on any heart issues for my husband but ignores the same test results for me.

I've been avoiding omega 6's and eating very good. Got my A1C down to 4.9. I still feel that I"m insulin resistant, but I do notice if I do spike, which is extremely rare, it doesn't last as long and comes down super quick. 99% of the time I spike 125 or less after a meal. Every few months I eat something bad, and yep I still get the spike. I stopped taking my insulin because my A1C is so low, as long as I eat right, I don't need insulin.
Need help..My A1C is 7.9, I take insulin shots since 2003, close to 20 years , Novolog FlexPen and Basaglar...

I am so confused with Insulin Resistance. I've been listening to both Ben Bikman PhD and Cyrus Khambatta PhD, both experts on the subject, yet their approaches to reversing IR are polar opposite. Can you get Cyrus Khambatta on the show as well? I dream that one day we can have those two together to have an intelligent conversation.
What an excellent idea, thank you so much for sharing that with me! I'll put him on my potential guest list. I haven't look as much into his stuff as Dr. Bikman and Dr. Fung, but when I do, I'm guessing that a whole foods approach will be at the center of both. Having those two together would be epic!
@@drmorgannolte Having those two together indeed would be epic. Both are experts, but one is HCLF and the other is HFLC -- polar opposite. To be honest, although HFLC sounds intuitive (do not take in carbs when diabetes has too much glucose in the blood), I admit that the analysis from Cyrus Khambatta on why we get insulin resistant sounds more convincing to me and his method appears to fix the root cause. Definitely look into his interviews (e.g. Rich Roll and Physicians Committee channels).

So, can I eventually get A1 C (mine is 5.7) down and reset my body so that I can occasionally indulge in simple carbs?? I cannot commit to never being able to have pasta. I am 58 and 5'4" and 212 pounds. About 10 years ago, I was around 185 and felt a lot better.
