Ahhhh....Motif #1...this sure brings back sentimental memories. When I was a budding art student, I made the trek to New England to immerse myself in the scenery where all the watercolorists I admired at that time seemed to hang out and paint. Of course, I made a special pilgrimage to see Motif #1, and the day I was there was very like the day in your painting, sunny and bright, a fresh breeze in the air, and the sound of the sea gulls surrounding me. Watercolor bliss ;-) Paul, you did the venerable building, the atmosphere, and yourself as an artist proud! So happy you took this challenge on!
I look forward to clicking on your Wednesday tutorials, I tackle many, sometimes successfully and enjoy them all. Painting a glass of wine would be a fun challenge, preferably red. Then your choice for a "perfect time to take a break" would be an easy one perhaps.
Love this line and wash! Thank you! Yes, it’s pronounced ’Bou-wee’ that ties to a lob-stah pot/trap. Each is a registered combination of colors belonging to each Lobster fisherman.
Good morning Paul , I’m always so excited to wake up on Wednesdays to see what you’ve got for us , and you never cease to amaze me! It’s been a struggle picking myself and my brushes up again and getting started this past month but this really inspires me , I love to paint water and boats ! Thank you Paul , and thank you for the history of Motif No 1, this really turned out beautiful! Many Blessings to you and Margot, thanks for all you do for the group ! ❤
Dear Maestro…you’ve done it again…across hundreds of miles of ocean.. you have taught me things I never knew before!! The brilliance of your work and the comforting nature of your voice brings an “approachability” to watercolor painting that is rarely achieved or acknowledged…(oh,I nearly forgot…your number 12brush..?) She not only holds a belly-full of water &color..but has a point that makes it all look so beautiful and easy…!)I’d love to add one to my arsenal…I’m still saving up my pennies to visit Ireland someday…and now I guess I’ll have to make a trip to Sussex to shake your hand..Thanks again for your tutelage and inspiration…!!!
Love this. We live about 3 hours from Rockport and frequent it quite often. I've always wanted to paint it. It's a beautiful town. Can't wait to start to paint!
Paul, thanks so much for this! I DO hope you enjoyed it as much as I did...It totally made my day, week, month....maybe year(?) Seeing it! My daughter woke me up on the phone "Did you suggest Motif 1 to Paul Clark???!!??" My relatives will begin to avoid me for the story! :) Thanks again! It came out so beautiful! ❤
I love Rockport. I stay at a lovely B&B just up the street from the wharf, and walk very early every morning just at sunrise. Thanks so much for sharing your video!
Thank you so much for a fabulous tutorial. We have seen this many times when visiting the USA as my brother-in-law lives reasonably close by but I never knew why it was called Motif #1. I am sending my painting over to my brother-in-law.
I enjoy your tutorials Paul. I am just getting back into painting learning watercolour painting. I like the way you slow down your video tutorials, explaining what you are doing. I have watched many different artist tutorials now and think by far yours are the best. Thankyou - Paula from Australia
Hi Paul! I was delighted to see your painting. I live about 40 miles from Rockport and I had painted the scene 2 months ago. Just watercolor, no ink but after watching the tutorial I want to try it again with line and wash.
I’ve been going to Rockport in the summer for over 20 years. We stay in a potter’s VRBO directly on the water across from this very building. I’ve been too intimidated to try painting it. Now that you’ve broken it down so well, I will give it a try. You make the most complex subjects very doable even for beginners. Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your skills and paintings.
Beautiful work. I have photographed Motif #1 but now will attempt to paint it. I lived in Connecticut in 78 and that storm collapsed the roof of the Hartford Civic Center where just a few hours prior there were several thousand fand attending a hockey game. By the grace of God, the arena was totally empty and no one was hurt. Paul, you were obviously born to paint and also teach. Thankyou.
Hi Paul, this is a wonderful painting class! I just visited this beautiful place - Rockport, MA a few weeks ago, and I am planning to paint this famous building. Now I will take your lesson and paint it as line & wash. Thank you!
Thoroughly enjoyed watching you make this video. I'm learning so much from watching you paint. I'm up for a new challenge and a move forward in my watercolor painting and artwork.
Hi Paul Karel here I painted Motif number 1 around 20 years ago but I used Acrylic. Much more forgiving for mistakes but now I would try watercolor. I've never tried line and wash but as you say in Jolly ole England, I'll give it a go.
Oh wow didn’t know about Motive #1 at all either. A great line & wash painting for me to give a try with. Lots of textures to do, reflections, & a lovely variety of subjects combined in the painting- boat, buildings, stone walls, skies. Thanks as always for sharing your thoughts & how to paint 🎨 knowledge with us. Have a great day!
Love this! My husband is from Gloucester, MA - next town over from Rockport. I've been to visit Motif1 many times so I'm gonna take a bash at painting it! Thank you Paul
Thank you for this lovely tutorial Paul. I learn so much from each of your videos. I've been in a little bit of a painting slump lately and this one really inspired me to get going again. It actually reminds me of the fishing sheds in many coastal villages in my home province of Newfoundland. That red colour is very common here too.
This was such a delight to watch! I grew up about 45 minutes from Rockport! I was 13 years old during the “Blizzard of 1978” that took out the original building. It is often called “The Storm of the Century.” We had 36-48 inches of snow in just over 30 hours, over the course of three astronomical high tides. I’ll never forget watching, on tv, home after home get swallowed by the ocean. There are several RUclips videos on the storm. However, my fondest memories of summer and of Rockport are of having lobster at Roy More’s fish shack, and a piece of strudel at Helmut’s as we watched the boats come into the harbor. I have more pictures of Motif no. 1 than I can count. It is a cherished spot for many in New England! Thank you for sharing it with your viewers.
@@Diane_McDon buoy! It was soooo great to see this! I left Mass 4 years ago. Living on the west coast now. I printed off the same picture a few weeks ago wanting to give it a go. I’m even more excited to try it now.
Line and wash is my favorite now. I am amazed by your perfect lines Paul and thank you for your amazing teaching. I will get it try of your Fishing Shack tonight.
Hello Paul! Another beautiful and interesting painting. Thank you for sharing the historical background on Motif #1. Always excited for your Wednesday tutorials! Thank you for always inspiring me and others.
I was so surprised when I saw what you painted this week. I was there on the day you posted it and took several photos of the shack myself to paint. Now I can just paint along with you! Much more fun!!
Great! I haven't even watched this yet but I spent years in MA and have been to Rockport on several occasions with family! I will love painting this! THANK YOU, Paul!
Hey Paul, I like to see you make a sketch your own by taking out or adding in some parts that make the painting more interesting. The subjects that you use are interesting as well. I am learning a lot about " line and wash' and Water Color painting.
Hi Paul I shall be definitely trying this painting . I have been to Rockport in Mass it’s beautiful. It’s where they filmed the Perfect storm movie . Good memories Thanks x Margaret.
Paul, you make painting fun by breaking things down and identifying the main characters in your art. I turn to you again and again for ideas, techniques and inspiration many times. Bless you and your wonderful humor and gift!!
Vielen Dank Paul für das wiederum lehrreiche Tutorial. Ich könnte dir stundenlang zusehen. Auch möchte ich mich ganz herzlich bedanken für die Aufnahme in eure tolle Facebookgruppe. Canadian east coasters would pronounce it as Boo- wee and Lobster, so it's all dependant on where you are.
