Is there a way to get the PDF to populate and attach to the record automatically? I want to use this method to send continuing education PDFs to people. I can do it with an email but people like a nice PDF version of the certificates.
Page Designer does not have an automatic option. There are third party tools you can use to get this result, like Documint or DocsAutomator. We've done videos on these before if you're interested
@@quikcode DocsAutomator uses Google Docs for templates and is really intuitive. I love it, but not everyone likes Google docs. If you don't want to use Google docs, it might not be the best choice, in which case Documint is a great option! It really is personal preference though, both tools are amazing
Thanks Gareth! I have a question - for each item I have several fields with a dollar amount. In the table I have a view that groups items by date. I love that in the grouped item by date view it sums each fields total. Is there a way to include those field sums in page designer?
To get a total from multiple records, you will need a linked relationship to another table. If you're currently grouping these fields by a single select field, try updating this to a new linked table. From there, on the new table, use a roll-up field to sum the total from the linked records. You can use this output in the Page Designer. 👌
What do you recommend in a case where we want to generate a docx/gdocs document, and the template includes many conditions (e.g., adding text if a certain condition is met, dynamically building a table with varying numbers of items)?
Typically it's preferred to find a 3rd party document tool for more complex document automation. Documint is a great one that we've done videos on in the past. There are workarounds, but this integration with GDocs is limited.
I wanted to be first to like but I am second. At least I am the first to comment. Thank you Gareth for the explaination. Do you think it would be possible to give an automatic name to the pdf ? Why do you prefer Airtable's extension to others ?
documint is way more powerful in terms of customization and also have good support. I have it set up to click and generate pdf within the attachment field. One downside for me is it takes some time to generate the pdf, compared to Page Designer which is instant.
There's no way to automatically name the PDF from Page Designer that I know of 🥲 Other options would be automatic document creation (Documint as Eric suggests is a great option). Positives are that this can be automated. Negatives are that it costs additional money for extra software. Stay tuned for more on this series - we will be showing all these options in time!
This is cool! and was awaited since a long time. It feels like the document designer of SmartSuite was a trigger to Airtable to develop this extension ) I would love to see a comparisson video: Page designer (AT) vs Document Designer (SS) Maybe in a few month when both get more mature ..
Airtable had Page Designer before SmartSuite came out with Document Designer, so perhaps the cause/effect goes the other direction? In either case, I love that SS Doc Designer is looking to be included with automation (although it isn't there just yet) and also that their pages will be dynamic in length. These are issues that Page Designer doesn't address. However, page designer is great for a simple one-page document like a PDF!
@@GarethPronovost thanks! Hadn't come across the page designer until watched this video ) And adding the document designer in automation will be its superpower 👌

Strange limitation, huh?
