I used to dislike fullbacks because it felt like they had no place in a modern system but ever since I tried recreating the Germany tactics and trying to make the Kimmich role work I fell in love with it. If you have a good passer, getting a fullback on attack and giving him the instructions to stay wider, take more risks and be more direct when passing means you get a player that stays on the edge of the attacking third, is always available and makes countless dangerous passes into the final third. Such a great role for controlling tactics.
I love their positioning as well; they create a shell of attack when you have possession. Don't get crazy far forward but like you say can be super dangerous in the final third
I used to play defensive full back on mobile. Usually a playmaker that got secondary position on fullback. Man, the sheer beau of diagonal long ping passes to my AF on counter attack is immense😂
Full back on attack is my favorite role in FM. They don't dwell on the ball as much as a wing back but they provide those deeper passes just like dlp said in the video. If you have quick players up front, the FB has a great angle for a through ball.
SUGGESTION : Picking a random team and creating a tactic for them. Then playing one season and show the results with the created tactic. I think it will be great for those who struggle to make tactics for teams that they dont know anything about.
thanks for the suggestion! I did something kind of like that in my "simple tactic" video with Luton Town. Didn't know much about them, and then a couple of tactic videos on them. hope those help out
I've been playing with FB's on attack lately and had much success with them, winning PL with Farnborough (taken them from Vanarama South) and one of my FB's was selected as best player in the league. What I've noticed is that they move abit differently if they are left or right footed. Using a left footed on the left side means they mostly stays outside and tries to make the crosses, but if you switch to a right footed he will cut inside alot more and go for the goal or a low short pass through the box. This can be a nice change to make during matches if you're not getting the goals.
yea their footedness is a great call; can really change how they play. I've noticed that with wingers too; they'll hold up play so they can switch the ball to their other foot
I didn't mention in the video, but it's a role I really trust. In any tactic where I need a good strong player out there (not necessarily focused on attack), I almost always use a full back
I recently swapped my WB-A for a FB-A in my tactic. Not only am I shipping less goals, but the FB is actually being involved in more goals at the other end of the pitch!
I like to play solid Wide CBs or Ballplaying CBs as LB/RB as FB and letting them hold position and dribble less, especially big players. In an Benfica save I played Oosterwolde (Transfered from Fenerbahce) as LB-FB and Benfica Talents Antonio Silva or Thomas Araujo as RB-FB. By looking at their Profile, they look like perfect Wide CBs, which they probably are, but I like to play exactly those players as FB. Theyre just doing their job, no fancy stuff, just what theyre told to do. If the team looses, then it has nothing to do with the players playing FB role, but the tactic that doesnt work or isnt good. Not an individual role, but an collective one like TF for example. Theyre so much cheaper and easier to find than skilled WBs and doesnt need a lot of key attributes. Oosterwolde for example is a big, fast and strong player that can develop some good mentals for that position, which is what this role needs imo. Antonio Silva or Tomas Araujo are more like Ball Playing CBs that can do everything a FB should be able to do. Most of the time those player cant really cross or dribble, but thats not their job just an nice extra. The main Idea was playing a solid disciplined football focussing on counter attacks with a wide offense where I let creative player do their stuff up front. I did use a 433 with a DM and played really wide with a RZM-B2B, LZM-Mez(At), RW-Winger (At), LW-IF (Su) and a Poacher/AF. Maybe there are better roles for offense (Didnt experimented) and its probably flexible. Mostly I think it should depend on the pool of players in the team, but the main Idea with the FBs stays. I just like to see such tactics and roles that focuses on beeing defensively solid in FM
The FB really takes advantage of a player's mentals too... since you're giving them the freedom to decide what is best. I enjoy that type of input from the player, especially if you have a top one like Araujo like you mentioned. A lot of times players don't need to be told what to do all the time, and the Full Back role really lets the individual shine
Hey, bro! I watch your videos and learned so many new things. I write this comment to ask you if it's possible to make a video where you explain all the team instructions (which are good for counterattack plays, possesion, long balls etc.) and team mentality? It will be very useful for new and old players who want to understand these things. I can say that your videos are amazing and you explain all the things. All the video examples are very good and demonstrative. Thanks!
thank you my friend! Thank you for taking the time to write out your response and comment. As for your question, I hope to get to a lot more team instruction videos as I near the end of the player role videos. I want to finish the player role series first, as that will give everyone references to go back to. Thanks again!
Oh wow. Was hoping for a in depth breakdown of the fullback and what's the difference between that role and a wing back. Its actually helped me tweak my current formation to create better balance. Prior to the tweak, I was running a WB on attack and the other on support. But I noticed that despite winning, I was conceding goals and chances when I have turnovers in the midfield. Tweaked the WB on support to a FB on support instead while removing most of the attacking instructions. Result was only 1 goal conceded in the last 4 games thus far and that was from a corner set piece. Possible to do a Pressing Forward role guide next? :D
glad the video helped!! And honestly like you alluded to the best time to change a tactic is when it's working; making sure all the roles are doing what you want them to
as always, amazing video. I would like to know if it can be an option to one day put on your to do list something like analyzing and explaining a specific coach's strategy, and which players we need to put where and why, to try to reproduce this style of tactic without just copy and paste something we find online, but understand why. For example I like Bielsa system 4-1-4-1 with a lot of trigger press, or you can also explain Pep Guardiola's system or any other great coach. That can be great and a good complement of all the solo positions already well explained in your videos. Thank you again.
thank you for the kind words! I do like that suggestion on coaches, or at least maybe replicating their style.. thank you for writing that out, I will see if I can work on more coach stuff as I near the end of the player role videos
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker I just discovered Fabian Hurzeler's tactic from Brighton, with no midfielders, very interesting tactic. Worked great in German league 2, let's see if that can work in Premier League against big teams.
I just found your videos and I enjoy them. When you speak of duties, I'd like to know what happens when you set them on automatic and set some specific instructions, like cross from deep or cut inside - then if you switch to an attack mentality will it override them or can the auto duty preserve them?
that's a really great question! I must say, I've never actually tried that specific scenario before! The auto would preserve the instruction, but I imagine that any conflicting instructions would be removed. For example, if you had a player instruction of "hold position" that would be removed if the auto was changed to attack (from your change in mentality) But again, great question!
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker thanks a lot, didn't expect you to see the comment since it's not on your most recent videos. You have a great attitude to your viewers :) I do use auto on some of my fullbacks to correct their play with some supporting and defending instructions and then switch to attack mentality, so that is probably ineffective.
I don't really use auto if I'm honest (though you reminded I probably should have at least mentioned it in the video lol)... it has to do with your mentality and the FB will follow that mentality; so if you go switch from balanced to attacking mentality during a match, the FB will also do that
You have no way of knowing this, but I almost chose him for the player example lol. I'll keep him in mind if I use the FB or do a deeper dive on the WB vs FB or something
The FB seems a bit like an outdated role. Its stuck a bit in between other roles that are more specialized. If u want more offense u go for a WB or a CWB, if u want more creativity/passing in the midfield u go for an inverted WB and if u just want good wide defender u can use a IFB. The FB is a mit like a role that isnt really good in anything. And thats a bit his strength. He is a solid defender and as long as ur tactic doesnt depend on his offensive prowes he will suprise u from time to time.
I've had a couple of tactics (like in some of the Luton videos) where I don't need anything special (like a WB), but I also want it to help out a bit. So a Full Back is a good fail safe if you want some productivity but nothing too crazy.
Oh man. I put so much emphasis on getting more players into the box when attacking (preferably 3-4 relatively early on), and now it turns out it's wrong?
Out of context but i noticed you respond to every comment so: Could you make a video on how to create a strategy without side defenders? Is it even possible to defend effectively with only 3 defenders in the middle? Exploits allowed if any. My goal is that I want to have one more player to set up in the middle or in attack and have a unique tactic, not like 99% of others with 4 defenders. For example 3-2-2-1-2 / 3-1-4-1-1 or something even more crazy while maintaining symetry.
hmm.. well that one would be tough I admit haha. I'm not saying it couldn't work (you can make anything work in FM), but it would be difficult I'm sure. Generally a tactic needs some kind of width or else you'll just trap yourself in the midfield. When attacking, you'd need a lot of player movement and variety, since all your players are in the center. But there's a number of player roles that you can use to create movement, so there's that. Defending would be tricky indeed. The opponent would probably just exploit the flanks the whole time. You could tell your team to trap inside and you'd basically defend crosses/flank play for 90 minutes, but you may be able to limit build up through the center. Just buy some super tall center backs. It's an interesting idea for sure!
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker yes it is tough, im trying to find a way for long time but every time enemy team gets a ball they run straight trought wings and then to the box
I would be interested if anyone knows: If a FB-s is asked to cut inside and sit narrow, will they play like an inverted wing-back? Asking for a friend who is trying to get the best out of a lad called Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Not necessarily, because the IWB will be more of a midfielder, whereas the Full Back is going to be a normal Full Back, just sitting more narrow. They'll also behave differently, so an IWB can play in the center attacking midfield area and a Full Back doesn't really do that
