It's amazing: E collars are literally just walkie talkies for your dog lmao
E-collar training literally saved my dog's life. Before she was trained with one I have to say I didn't have a good opinion of them, not knowing anything about them. Before she was E-collar trained she was anxious, pulling on leash, barking and lunging at people and other dogs and also biting me. Basically she was a hot mess. After E-collar training she is balanced, happy, walks beautifully with no leash reactivity, stopped biting me and totally off leash trained. The difference was absolutely amazing. Now I enjoy spending lots of time outdoors off and on leash with my wonderful female GSD with no stress and no danger to other people/dogs!
I agree! I experienced the same with my GSD and lab mix. Wish I had started ecollar training years ago! They are life savers for sure.
I dont mean to be so off topic but does anybody know of a trick to get back into an instagram account??
I was dumb lost my password. I love any tips you can offer me.
@Xander Charlie Thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Xander Charlie It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much, you saved my account!
@Phillip Ephraim No problem :D
What an amazing tool. My puppy was having major collar issues and after one short session our relationship has taken a 180. Mitigates my need to handle her as often in the woods when she’s off leash and now she listens to “leave it” way better. Less stress for me and her and way more fun for both of us too. Thanks for demystifying and promoting the benefits alongside proper usage. Cheers dude. Well done.
This is great advice for anyone using an E collar. From beginners to advanced dog trainers. Great job man. I love this channel. I'm not much one for getting on camera so I send a ton of my clients to this page.
A truly informative video. Thanks for posting.
Many years ago we used training collars (along with the usual techniques) for training our dogs when we first got them. When we were training we always communicated commands orally along with hand signals. We really didn't have to use the training collars for a long time and stopped using them when we were satisfied that our dogs were sufficiently trained.
Thirteen years later, one of our older dogs is going deaf. We resurrected the training collar (in vibrate mode) to train him to look at us when we wanted to give a command. Now he can respond to the hand gesture even if he can't hear the command.
Cheers.
I’m sooooo happy you’re making this series!!
Tom, I have been watching your videos for about a year. My 1 year old GSD Jax is a great dog and we were using a Pinch collar for a while. But I love this new series on the E collar. I wanted to be able to walk him off lease and control him around other dogs. Covid last year kept me from socializing him. We are slowly working on socializing but the ecollar series is just what I was looking for. Thanks and keep up the good work.
E collars are great tools. We taught our dog all the basics and then went to the e collar so we could be more comfortable with him being off leash. We use the mini educator on continuous, the red button on boost mode. The boost is for when he spots a skunk or other wildlife. We live in a rural area so there is the possibility of running into almost anything. Also good if they take a liking to fox poop like ours did. He starts to snack, tell him drop it and give him a stim, he drops it.
Nice job Tom. I agree E collars are a great tool used correctly with proper conditioning. I have never had to use anything other then low levels. Thanks : )
Tom Davis, you are a Heaven-sent! Will from Fenrir Dog Training highly recommends you, also for anything regarding remote collar training. And for very good reason! Thank you so much for your work, which no doubt is saving many a dog's life.
Great video on the introduction of the E Collar training. It's great having the demonstration along with the voice explanation.
Thanks Ben!
Bro.... you’re training patty mahomies and his pup?!?! Such a bad ass!
Thanks for this video though! I was confused on the nic function on my sportdog. Very beneficial!!
Super excited to see this series!
Yes!
My three favs all in one. KC, dogs, and Chiefs!
What the heck how did I miss this video. That’s so awesome!
Thank you, thank you! This has answered all my questions! Now I have to retrain my pup.
Thanks so much! This is very clear. You're a good teacher.
Just got my “no bad dogs” ecollar, I’m super stoked! Cant wait to put it to use
Really good explanation on relating to the collar, not punishment ❤
wow! this is incredibly helpful!
Yooooo the quality of these videos are INSANE
Thanks, we worked hard on them!
Best e collar video I’ve seen so far
Very informative. I just got a dogtra 1900s . I’ll try it on my gardener first. He’s more stubborn than my Dutch shepherd. Thanks
No fricken way!! That's so awesome!
Love from KC!!
You saving dogs lives!
I use the tone for commands and release and sometimes for calling my dog to come to me. If hes entertained i use the shock or if he tries to begin with its bark/whining symphony
Great channel to learn🐾 thank you🙏🏼🌎
Thanks for watching!
@@tomdavisofficial you welcome 🙏🏼
You were in Kansas City and I didn’t know 😭 I was so close!
Sorry! :(
I’ve watched COUNTLESS videos on e collar introduction over the past few Months and this video is hands theeee most informative of all!!! In fact, for the first time ever, I now feel confident enough to finally use our collar; which has been sitting in the box since I bought it.
I do have a few questions that I’m hoping you can answer:
1. Sounds like you recommend a super low intensity shock over the vibration function when introducing. Do I have that right?
2. Do you have any videos explaining how/when to transition from using as a reinforcement to using an aversive? (Ex: correcting certain behaviors/actions the dogs presenting). I live on a busy road and I’m so worried my puppy’s going to get hit by a car. But I’m confused as to how I’m supposed to use the collar for
positive and negative.
Love this! I have never heard of using the e collar when you are also saying 'good' heel and break. I really like that because then like you said its your voice not necessarily a correction. Does anyone know if he does a video that shows going up in levels for a correction until its listened too?
There is an E collar training video that he talks about finding the levels it’s about two hours long it goes over everything it’s on his website you can buy it it’s about $200 but it’s good
Great video. We are just getting started with an e-collar with our Mal. Right now, he gets so flustered if we buzz him that he becomes too distracted to obey. Will he gradually be more focused to respond?
Can you elaborate on sensitivity vs working level or are the terms interchangeable?
Thank you for your videos I’ve watched many of them and they’ve helped me I have a German shepherd mix with a lot of the leash aggression with people and dogs but I also have two other dogs that are minor behavior problems and I struggle training all three dogs in the same household any recommendations
YOU WERE IN KC!! dang I didn’t know. 😭 you should come back and do some some classes/clinics! I’d definitely go!
you need to use the beep and vibrate over the shock aka stim.
Any advice for proper collar placing on a dog with thick fur i.e a husky?
Do you recommend using the leash on the collar while using the e collar rather than a front leading harness?
Your great
What type of he collar are you using? The one I bought shocks the crap out of me when I test it on level 1...geez. I'm gonna send it back.
I love your videos I just bought a collar and it would be much appreciated if you could point it just some more in-depth videos camera guards
so when would you use the vibrate button? like as a correction for if they were jumping on guests or stealing food off the table or how? i just got an e collar for my dog and i’ve watched your videos prior to getting it, and i understand how and when to use the stim but not really the vibration.
Don't test it on your throwing arm! Great video looking forward to trying all this with my chocolate lab
LOl, thanks for watching Mitch
My first thought too! Hahaha
Is there a way to train a 3 year old dog with e collar? Also, can you train to settle down if they are scared of storms?
Is this something this a good excercise for a hyper dog? I have a half German Shepard and husky
You might not see this as its an old video. But last part of video while sending to place off leash it looked like you applied pressure all the way to place. Is that correct?
We use a 7 for a “listen” and the vibrate we use to call off prey. A lot of people think the vibration is the “sweeter” option but more often than not, it isn’t.
I've watched 15 videos on e collars and this is the only one that made sense. The other ones didn't even mention the vibrate function.
That was my dude PM!
How do you know what level on the remote the dog should be on?
What’s the brand of your remote
That’s my QB’s dog ❤
Your videos are incredibly helpful. Thank you so much. One question; in the beginning of this video around three minutes are all the tabs you are doing stimulation? The level five stimulation?
I just bought a Dr.Trainer Dog Training Collar for my German shepherd. This Training Collar has auto retractable and will not cause irritation to my dog's neck. Also I can record my voice to the system, I can use my voice recording to train my dog, say goodbye to the traditional beep sound for good. So far it seems really effective. All I do is pressing the voice recording button to correct my dogs behavior. We hardly have to use the shock setting.
Prong above e-collar or vice versa?
I noticed that you went back and forth between the educator and another e-collar. Was there a reason for that other than partnerships?
What ECollar are you using?
Hi are you using vibrate or shock?
Why do u like the dogtra as opposed to the mini educator??
I took my dogs to a 3 week board and train and their method to tech leash walking/heal was to say “no” and tap the remote while you say it if they walked past us out of heal. For one dog it seemed to work alright but the other dog gets so excited about walks that I have to correct him a lot and I feel bad. Would this be a rec method to continue?
where do you work out of? Upstate NY?
What e collar do you recommend
When and how would you use the beep button
I have two vizslas that are 7 months old and am starting e collar training. I have tested to find the appropriate nick level and they are at 27 and 28 when they first responded. Everything I’m seeing on your videos says we shouldn’t start higher than 10. I have the new dogtra Pathfinder2.
I need help training my German Shepard, is there a way to talk privately?
Will you upload some podcasts any time soon?
Question what number did u use for her wrist?
Which Brand or specification of ecolllar would you recommend for a long haired GSD. Thanking you in advance.
Dogtra or educator e collar
how old should a dog be to start with ecollar?
How Do I Use The ECollar For Someone Like Me That’s A Beginner
So are you using more of the shock sensation or the vibration?
On all your videos you mention you always train your dogs on a 4-5 level i have a veery active lab and she seems not to even notice anything from 4-5 and starts to feel stuff around 11. Is that fine or should she be working off a 4-5?
all dogs have different levels i say leave her at 11 since she feels it cuz if you leave it at 4-5 its going to be like she doesnt have anything on
Tom thank you so much you're amazing, but what do you do if the dog gets of the place? Can or should you correct it with the e collar?
Do you always teach "stay"? Any benefit over an implied stay. Such as telling my dog "sit" or "down" and only breaking until I give them their release word?
I just bought a Dr.Trainer Dog Training Collar for my German shepherd. I can record my voice to the system, I can use my voice recording to train my dog, say goodbye to the traditional beep sound for good. So far it seems really effective. All I do is pressing the voice recording button to correct my dogs behavior. We hardly have to use the shock setting.
I would like to know that too.
Sit has an implied stay, but you may not want it with down. Just so you can tell your dog to chill out when necessary, but then not have to release him 'manually'.
Hey man loving your channel, I’ve just got the mini educator and using it on my kelpie. She like to chase cars so I’ve had to use the stim straight away before we’ve done any real training with it. Is it going to confuse her when I use it for this now?
you should try to only use the shock funct. as a correction, the vibration should be used as either a recall or in the way hes using it in the video. you can also use the tone function as a "focus" command.
Does the beep function work the same as stim if dog listens to it ? Or is it better just to to use stim ?
can someone give me advice. i introduced the e collar to my dog at the lowest setting possible and he is deathly scared of the vibrations. i was giving him treats and trying yo get him to associate it with that but now he just runs when he sees the collar. he is now ecen scated of the beep noise in the collar. and i feel like he is more afraid of the vibration noise than the vibration itself because when it was on my hand i used it he heard the noise and started barking
Out of curiosity, how do you use it for recall? My trainer taught me to use the vibration for recall and a higher stim for correction.
He actually has a really good video on that. Try looking up his videos on the e- collar.
Better yet at 2:07 he makes the point of introduction.
And a better thing to take note of at 3:38
I use the beep and if she doesn’t respond immediately I use the stim
How much does it cost for Tom to train for 2 hours?
I am confused you say heel tap so that means you say the word and then you tap the collar or actually the remote and then you say later you say the word and the Correction at the same time so please help me out or somebody on this link help me out do you say it together how do you say the word and then the tap have a second later thank you very much
More people need to be educated on the difference between "Training Collars" and "Shock Collars" my TC has 127 settings and a vibration setting. I use a very low setting to reinforce "Good Dog" and the vibration as the correction. Thank you for your video!!
Fancy a trip to France ? Could do with some help. 😅😅
This video inspired us to order an e-collar. Very well done. I am looking for Episode 2. Is it out yet? I haven't found it yet.
Wow
I have a technical question about these fancy collars. What if you are working with the dog on a non-corrective level, and then something happens and you need to quickly switch to a corrective level, is it easy to do this quickly?
It's very easy. You can set it up so one button is set to a non correction level and one button is for emergency - correction level :)
@@gracecrxmb2642 That's awesome... My country is so behind on all kinds of dog-related products for sale.... Thanks for the reply!
Do you worry about the collar bruising or irritating the dogs neck if its on too long? I am having a hard time figuring out the right tightness for my dog so the collar always stays in place, but is not too tight. Thank you so much, your videos have helped us SO much. We have made way more progress in one weeks training with your methods than over a year of training with only positive. Total game changer.
You should not be able to fit more than two fingers (next to each other not on top of each other) underneath the strap of the collar when your dog is wearing it. If your dog is wearing the collar for a long period of time, you should move the collar every two hours. If the collar is not moved your dog might develop pressure sores. If your dog is sitting in front of you and you consider the top of her head to be 12 o'clock, the collar is typically placed around either 3, 4, 5 or 7, 8, 9. It is never placed at 6 o'clock.
Verify daily your dog's skin at the different positions where you use the collar. Some dogs have allergies to the metal of the contact points which is why good e-collar companies sell different contact points.
I hope this is helpful. Cheers.
At what age do you recommend starting a dog on the e collar training?
Most trainers would say not much before 6 months old. In theory, you are not supposed to use the collar to teach new behaviors to your dog but to proof behaviors that your dog already knows. For this reason, some trainers will recommend going over all the basic obedience, then introduce leash pressure and finally introduce the e-collar.
Cheers.
KC area dog trainer here and the Mahomeses are still having issues with their dogs, according to the grapevine. The technique used here is sloppy or at least outdated. By simultaneously tapping the e-collar whilst giving the command, he's naming the stim/pressure/shock: "Heel" = shock; "Place" = shock, and so on.
The correct technique is hold the constant stim/shock/pressure ~2 seconds before giving the command, and then release the collar when the dog complies. The dog will then learn that the command is the option out of the stim/how to turn it off. It's simple negative reinforcement.
Tom Davis is using no consistent or clear markers for positive reinforcement, so he's working exclusively in -R, unless one's counting the secondary reinforcers 😂
Modern trainers use -R AND +R when working with an e-collar:
Stim (-R) --> command --> release the stim --> mark & reward/release (+R). Repeat.
Why not say the command first, then apply the stim and discontinue it once the dog shows intent to complete the behavior? Why stim first?
Looks like he has a Chiefs game on in the background.
First I want to say thank you for this awesome video. I just started with the e collar yesterday so seeing this was right in time. You mentioned that you have it on your dog all day so that you have total control the entire day, my question is... Do we leave it on them when they are sleeping? I've been taking it off every time she's napping but I would be happy to know that it's safe to leave it on even when they are sleeping.
I would love to know this too! After three days of training on a 4.. my dogs neck was raw and bleeding. I was told he can sleep in it but I wouldn’t suggest sleeping in it.
@@BIGSISTALKwithBri you have to adjust the collar, and if his neck is bleeding your at too high of a level. off when sleeping
Don’t leave it on more than 2-3 hours max. You don’t need it on when they are napping either.
I have so many questions. I have three wonderful lobing dogs of different sizes and ages. My oldest and biggest dog is a runner so she is constantly on a leash and I would love for her to be able to run and play around my buddy's huge property with all of the other dogs. On the other hand my two youngest dogs run off when someone rides or walks near my yard that I haven't been able to fence yet. How do I apply the collar in a positive way to train my dogs to better behave. Barking is also an issue.
for starters you can teach your dog that a continuous vibration is the same as a recall, he has a video of what i mean posted on his channel called e collar recall training.
Their dog is either completely exhausted at nine months or on qualudes. Granted, it is ideal to train a dog after it ha expended a lot of energy. She is extremely, let’s say, relaxed. Or clearly exhausted
This is a great video thank you so much. Silver seems like a very sweet girl.
Whats the Brand?
Tom is/was sponsored by Dogtra so I think it is safe to assume that the collar in the video is a Dogtra. Another good e-collar company is EcollarTechnologies. Most trainers using e-collars will only use collars from these two brands.
Cheers.
So just want to be clear: Many people use the e collar as a method of correction, but to my understanding, the proper use of an ecollar is for communication? So instead of using it as correction when she doesn't comply, you use it as a method of communication until she complies? Thanks again! Starting to train my 7 month old husky mix with an ecollar.
How do you discipline with a e collar
Hi. How many times/day do you repeat this? How many days?
Ha, you answered my question at the end. LOL Still, do this for a week? Longer?
At what age do you recommend starting to use an E-collar?
I just checked out your instagram and i’m only 3 hours from your location and my trainer uses the same obedience tricks like place and the mini educator I wonder if y’all ever met up
What age should you start e collar training? We have a 4 month old Blue Heeler/Australian Shepard that I want to start on. Is it too early?
Sara Ayers Not sure what he suggests, but the training facility I go to for e-collar training does not use it on dogs under 5 months old (they still train before then, just no e-collar).
