This man is the only dog trainer I've seen who talks about where the collar should be placed on the neck for training. All the other "expert dog trainers" I've seen keep the collar low on the neck & teach people to smash that trachea. It's kind of frustrating. This channel is the best.

Fun fact, pressure and release is also how you train horses. It is easily used as a very light negative and a strong positive reenforcement. They kick at you, you make them move their feet. They stop and lick their lips and you take a step back. Never have to touch them unless they are being actively true aggressive, which is very rare.
I have risen many horses and that is actually how I transferred to working with my personal dog on leash pressure and reactivity. I had no knowledge of this channel and I was basically doing the same things because it was how I was taught to handle a horse. I was like if I can work with a horse like this a dog will be able to learn the same way. And guess what, I was right. It worked. My dog never pulls anymore and will check in so much, plus is barely reactive.

I watch 4 dog trainers on RUclips to get a broad view and range of training techniques, philosophies and strategies...I tend to gravitate toward one or two for certain things (like behavioural training) and the others for things like tricks and tasks. This is the first video of yours that I have seen and if you stick with this (I know you have been doing them for years), your reach is going to expand beyond your wildest dreams. Your explanations and approach are spot on and very easy for ANYBODY to adopt. I just reduced my core trainer group to three...and you are one of them. Thank you and keep up the great work.
For owners says your dog/puppy is too hyper or too excited try this... Use the garden, driveway or part on the street same area every time (they will get alot of exercise 1. Because of mental training 2. Walking up and down) When it's the same area it becomes just a normal place for the dog so the excitement slowly calms down. Once they have a hang of things exstend the area, definitely try high value snacks like chicken, beef and liver ect mix it up each time so it's something new. I'm no professional this was just what I was taught and she got the hang of things luckily our dog is obsessed with food 😆
This is fantastic to know, we forked out for an expensive behaviourist a couple of years ago when we were having problems and he told us we had to use a slip lead and just told us he wouldn't pull on it. It didn't work at all and he pulls so hard I worry he's hurting himself, now I can use these tips and hopefully get him walking nicely!

Oh man I can't imagine being a dog walker with how bad most peoples dogs are in general, but specifically walking. Do you usually have to teach them how to walk correctly or do you just say screw it they're not my dog I'm not going to sp end the time to fix their walking?

I’ve tried slips and my dog responds sometimes, but he’s very good at shaking it down his neck as well like the other person commented. Glad she did as I thought it was me not knowing how to use the thing and getting a bit frustrated. I think I’ll try this step backward first from the pressure to see if he improves, but have been thinking about the prong for a while now. Love these basic videos.

Actually, I checked with the company that supplied my ecollar and it has to be on the throat. It didn’t work on the side and my dog didn’t come back chasing a kangaroo :(

I’m so happy I found your channel. You explain things in a way that I can understand. There are certain things that I know I failed that as a dog mom with my last dog of 12 years. She passed away recently, and I’ve been putting a lot of thought into things that I will do differently with my next dog… One of them will absolutely be good leash skills, which Mabel never ever got a good at, and I knew it was my fault😂
Love your videos, we have a 65 pound lab/pit mix we’re trying to not pull on the lease. She is almost 4 and we have had her since she was a puppy. We have been going about it all wrong. Looking forward to using your techniques and making going out and walking fun for both of us.
We recently fostered (and then adopted) a rescue - Collie cross (crossed with a Staffordshire Bull Terrier we think). When she arrived, she was terrified of outdoor walks and traffic, and didn't know leash walking. We sorted all that, and she now walk well...gets a bit too excited at times especially when we first leave for the walk. My problem is that although her off-leash recall is generally "good", and we developed that with a praise and treat system, no amount of fuss or treats work when she sees something she is really interested in, like a squirrel. She just won't come back no matter how many times I call or whistle or how many times she sees my hand go into the treat bag. I really envy owners of well trained dogs who, when called or whistled, will stop in their tracks and return.
This I can relate to. I feel for you. I have basically given up on off leash walks. My dog is a jack Russell pug mix he loves treats and attention in the house but outside where there are new smells and other animals, he basically thinks, “Why would I only want treats or pets and praise when I can have whatever that is.”
Oh Boy gotta try this with my pulling bully...seems they are forward only and a big forward muscle on legs lol. A tank basically lol. So glad you gave the positioning of the slip, I see too many dogs choking and coughing

I was using this leash wrong and didn’t even know it. Your technique is so simple and watching the dog walk perfectly was like something out of my dreams lol. This is not how my walks look but now I know what to do to make them better! Thank you SO much!!!!!
Thank you Tom I just got a slip leash for my gsp. Great timing! She's 3 months old. Did well with this training only problem I have is she has a bad habit of chewing/chasing the leash. That's my biggest frustration right now. Teething isn't helping hoping with enough repetition I can get that under control.
My 1 year old does the same😂 I think she thinks it's a toy, because she has a toy that looks similar. What I do is I hold the part that she is biting, (usually the closest part to her mouth) and say a firm no. Once she stops biting I mark 'yes' and reward, then continue walking. Hope this helps😊
8 month old still does this. Switched to a regular chain style leash and has helped. She still tries once in a while to chew the chain leash but quickly realizes it doesnt feel good in her mouth
I've watched most of your videos but still struggle with a pully GSD and I suspect it's because we've always used a flat collar. Will give this a go with a slip collar and hopefully see an improvement soon. Thanks as always for your invaluable content!
@@tomdavisofficial The difference in my GSD with a slip collar was night and day. One or two minor corrections and lots of positive praise and for the first time in a long time we had a walk with hardly any pulling! Such a simple change really transformed our walks :-)

I'm working with a huge GSD/Rottie who's a big puller. I think there is a physiological problem with her throat/neck area as even the lightest pressure causes her to gag and vomit like fingers down the throat. Having to do it on a harness. I hope she gets it before my back gives out. I'm going to try this back step thing. Thanks Tom.
I'm going to have to try this with my dog since no other methods have worked.. a head collar has somewhat worked to restrict the amount of pulling she can do, but she's slowly started pulling again.
Finally a video that advocates the use of pressure, I've met people who adopt large dogs that can't walk well on a leash and the first thing they do is stick them on a harness. Then they don't like walking the dog, so they don't do it and the dog gets pent up energy and starts displaying behavioral issues. My dad is like this with his GSP and I tell him in order to get a dog like mine you gotta work with him and don't be afraid to scold, it's like raising a kid.
I'm currently taking my dog to PetsMart training and my dog just doesn't want to listen because there is no consequences for misbehaving, the constant food bribe doesn't always work, your methods makes much more sense. Thanks!
Thankyou for explaining in detail-why- what- how. Cause and effect. Clear eloquence. Key. Attention to details and responses. Acknowledging results. Appropriate timely rewards. I see and understand but implementing them requires higher skills. If one cannot discipline or train their pet appropriately or successfully- seek professional help... for the dogs sake and everyone else's sakes.
This video is super helpful. My german shpherd pup is very good on leash walking and never breaks a heel until there is another dog then he must stop and stand in between the new dog and me. Not aggressively just like "hey buddy this is my owner, get pets from someone else".
Watching while you don't have a dog is dangerous! I didn't have any desire to get a dog, started watching these types of videos and brought home a puppy in June. He's awesome and these videos help me as a first time pet owner for sure.

My wife and I have an 11 week lab puppy. He LOVED walks for his first 2 weeks, but all of a sudden he absolutely REFUSES to leave our driveway, to the point where he’ll jump backwards pulling on the leash uncontrollably. I have been teaching him lessons like this video for the leash in general but I have 0 clue why he went from loving walks to refusing them. Any ideas? Is it just, “well he’s 11 weeks, it’s a small phase at that age”?? 6-7 days now we’ve tried treats, no yelling or anger just happy positive vibes about every inch he makes, tried carrying him across the road then walking, etc. and he just cries pulling backwards until we walk back home. Anyone here have ideas?
Your dog is still in the socialization phase at eleven weeks old. My thought is to do a video consultation with Thomas. Otherwise, you could try being very patient with the pup by taking him to the edge of his fear zone and putting gentle pressure on the leash. Slight, slow pressure and then stop. Repeat. See if you can picture your pup moving forward and practice.
Definitely getting this leash for my new puppy. Her dad was easy for me to train, but she is extra stubborn like her mother. Thanks I think this might work.
My last GSD, I had her at 14 weeks, I never had her on anything but a flat collar, there was never any need for anything else as she was so eager to learn and please. I am certainly not against using the available tools, just saying that she was exceptional.
I just recently came across your channel and have already watched a lot of videos. I have a 4 year old male Doberman who is a handful. We struggle with him being possessive over food and over our home. Anytime someone comes into our house he barks/growls and jumps on them continuously even after we attempt to assure that it is ok for them to be in the house. I’m not sure what else to do to stop him and paying someone to train him is something we just can’t afford.
Doberman’s are a strong breed that require: A) A calm, firm leader that sets rules, boundaries and limitations. B) Plenty of daily exercise. A half-hour walk morning and evening may not be enough. Consider adding a doggie backpack to you walk. You can add a bottle or two of water for added weight. C. Your dog must work for everything it gets. This means food. Have you tried hand feeding your dog. Train the dog to take food and treats gently. Make your dog sit before feeding it. Make your dog sit before going out the door. D) Manage your home environment. Your dog needs to be on leash when any stranger/friends come over. Learn how to correct your dog’s behavior (See Solid K9 Training RUclips Channel and Robert Cabral Channel in addition to Upstate Canine Academy channel). Any visitors to your house need to practice the following: No looking at your dog. No touching your dog. No eye contact. E) You must be a calm, confident leader for your dog. Your dog can sense your emotions and read your energy and body language. Good luck.
The part of making sure my dog understood the leash pressure is SAVING me!! He wouldn't even back up in the house even when his entire focus was on me and the treat. It didn't even cross his mind he should have been backing up. Now he's getting the point and im getting the point he didn't even have a clue about pulling lol.

Thank you 😊 When placing a slip leash or choke collar on a dog, stand in front of and face the dog. Hold up the slip leash or choke collar if in the correct position it will create a letter "P", slip it over the dog's head being sure that it's place correctly for what side of you the dog will be walking. I hope that this makes sense.

My problem is that although her off-leash recall is generally "good", and we developed that with a praise and treat system, no amount of fuss or treats work when she sees something she is really interested in, like a squirrel. She just won't come back no matter how many times I call or whistle or how many times she sees my hand go into the treat bag. I really envy owners of well trained dogs who, when called or whistled, will stop in their tracks and return.
This I can relate to. I feel for you. I have basically given up on off leash walks. My dog is a jack Russell pug mix he loves treats and attention in the house but outside where there are new smells and other animals, he basically thinks, “Why would I only want treats or pets and praise when I can have whatever that is.”
Oh Boy gotta try this with my pulling bully...seems they are forward only and a big forward muscle on legs lol. A tank basically lol. So glad you gave the positioning of the slip, I see too many dogs choking and coughing

Thank you Tom I just got a slip leash for my gsp. Great timing! She's 3 months old. Did well with this training only problem I have is she has a bad habit of chewing/chasing the leash. That's my biggest frustration right now. Teething isn't helping hoping with enough repetition I can get that under control.
My 1 year old does the same😂 I think she thinks it's a toy, because she has a toy that looks similar. What I do is I hold the part that she is biting, (usually the closest part to her mouth) and say a firm no. Once she stops biting I mark 'yes' and reward, then continue walking. Hope this helps😊
8 month old still does this. Switched to a regular chain style leash and has helped. She still tries once in a while to chew the chain leash but quickly realizes it doesnt feel good in her mouth

I've watched most of your videos but still struggle with a pully GSD and I suspect it's because we've always used a flat collar. Will give this a go with a slip collar and hopefully see an improvement soon. Thanks as always for your invaluable content!

@@tomdavisofficial The difference in my GSD with a slip collar was night and day. One or two minor corrections and lots of positive praise and for the first time in a long time we had a walk with hardly any pulling! Such a simple change really transformed our walks :-)

I'm working with a huge GSD/Rottie who's a big puller. I think there is a physiological problem with her throat/neck area as even the lightest pressure causes her to gag and vomit like fingers down the throat. Having to do it on a harness. I hope she gets it before my back gives out. I'm going to try this back step thing. Thanks Tom.

I'm going to have to try this with my dog since no other methods have worked.. a head collar has somewhat worked to restrict the amount of pulling she can do, but she's slowly started pulling again.

Finally a video that advocates the use of pressure, I've met people who adopt large dogs that can't walk well on a leash and the first thing they do is stick them on a harness. Then they don't like walking the dog, so they don't do it and the dog gets pent up energy and starts displaying behavioral issues. My dad is like this with his GSP and I tell him in order to get a dog like mine you gotta work with him and don't be afraid to scold, it's like raising a kid.
I have a 7 month old German Shepard/ Siberian husky and she pulls like CRAZY ! This is the first time I see this technique so I’ll try it out
I'm currently taking my dog to PetsMart training and my dog just doesn't want to listen because there is no consequences for misbehaving,
the constant food bribe doesn't always work, your methods makes much more sense. Thanks!

I was taught to make a "P" with the slip collar to put it on. Keep up the great work and stay safe.
Depends on which side they're walking. P for the left, q for the right.

Clear eloquence. Key. Attention to details and responses. Acknowledging results. Appropriate timely rewards. I see and understand but implementing them requires higher skills. If one cannot discipline or train their pet appropriately or successfully- seek professional help... for the dogs sake and everyone else's sakes.

This video is super helpful. My german shpherd pup is very good on leash walking and never breaks a heel until there is another dog then he must stop and stand in between the new dog and me. Not aggressively just like "hey buddy this is my owner, get pets from someone else".

My wife and I have an 11 week lab puppy. He LOVED walks for his first 2 weeks, but all of a sudden he absolutely REFUSES to leave our driveway, to the point where he’ll jump backwards pulling on the leash uncontrollably. I have been teaching him lessons like this video for the leash in general but I have 0 clue why he went from loving walks to refusing them. Any ideas? Is it just, “well he’s 11 weeks, it’s a small phase at that age”?? 6-7 days now we’ve tried treats, no yelling or anger just happy positive vibes about every inch he makes, tried carrying him across the road then walking, etc. and he just cries pulling backwards until we walk back home. Anyone here have ideas?
Your dog is still in the socialization phase at eleven weeks old. My thought is to do a video consultation with Thomas. Otherwise, you could try being very patient with the pup by taking him to the edge of his fear zone and putting gentle pressure on the leash. Slight, slow pressure and then stop. Repeat. See if you can picture your pup moving forward and practice.
Make it seem so easy 😂.... can’t wait to head home to my pup and apply what I’ve learn

My last GSD, I had her at 14 weeks, I never had her on anything but a flat collar, there was never any need for anything else as she was so eager to learn and please.
I am certainly not against using the available tools, just saying that she was exceptional.

I just recently came across your channel and have already watched a lot of videos. I have a 4 year old male Doberman who is a handful. We struggle with him being possessive over food and over our home. Anytime someone comes into our house he barks/growls and jumps on them continuously even after we attempt to assure that it is ok for them to be in the house. I’m not sure what else to do to stop him and paying someone to train him is something we just can’t afford.
Doberman’s are a strong breed that require:
A) A calm, firm leader that sets rules, boundaries and limitations.
B) Plenty of daily exercise. A half-hour walk morning and evening may not be enough. Consider adding a doggie backpack to you walk. You can add a bottle or two of water for added weight.
C. Your dog must work for everything it gets. This means food. Have you tried hand feeding your dog. Train the dog to take food and treats gently. Make your dog sit before feeding it. Make your dog sit before going out the door.
D) Manage your home environment. Your dog needs to be on leash when any stranger/friends come over. Learn how to correct your dog’s behavior (See Solid K9 Training RUclips Channel and Robert Cabral Channel in addition to Upstate Canine Academy channel). Any visitors to your house need to practice the following: No looking at your dog. No touching your dog. No eye contact.
E) You must be a calm, confident leader for your dog. Your dog can sense your emotions and read your energy and body language.

The part of making sure my dog understood the leash pressure is SAVING me!! He wouldn't even back up in the house even when his entire focus was on me and the treat. It didn't even cross his mind he should have been backing up. Now he's getting the point and im getting the point he didn't even have a clue about pulling lol.

When placing a slip leash or choke collar on a dog, stand in front of and face the dog. Hold up the slip leash or choke collar if in the correct position it will create a letter "P", slip it over the dog's head being sure that it's place correctly for what side of you the dog will be walking. I hope that this makes sense.
