      Exactly. I volunteer at our local humane society to walk dogs. Most of them have had no structure or leadership. I want to help make these dogs better canine citizens but it sure is tough in this environment. Any suggestions for someone in my shoes ( limit of 15 min per dog, loud shelter , limited resources...)?

    i came across this video seeking advice on how to better my relationship with my german shepherd and i am now realizing he is such a good boy. I make him sit on his cot while i fill his bowl with food and even leave his sight in order to get the water but he will not leave his cot until i say go or let’s go and he stares at me and waits for permission. He just recently learned how to stay seated even when the cot isn’t present. He’s a little over a year. This video actually made me realize that i’m being too harsh on myself. I want him to be a great dog but i also need to enjoy him while he’s still a crazy pup!

    • @ChrisGalleta80
      @ChrisGalleta80 3 года назад

      Our human expectations, our doubts, our bad feelings, our emotions make them do bad like they do if there is no correct structure for the relationship. I always say to my clients "drop any expectations", "be patient", and "don't be too harsh on yourself and therefore for your dog" 😉 and most important "don't try to over control the dog, show him a different way to behave"
      Tom, as always on point... 😉

    • @Makado14
      @Makado14 3 года назад

      Good puppy! You are definitely laying a good foundation, but I would start him in basic obedience asap, because 1) he is very willing to please, and 2) there's no telling how far you can go with a gsd like yours. Wish mine weren't so hard headed. 😁

  • @raistek

    Bad part is people usually think that this is just irritating a dog and being mean to him. Showing the food and taking it away etc. People started treating dogs like humans lately which is just not a good thing.

    My notes:
    1. (Going inside) put dog in sit. Carefully swing open door and praise if she stays. Do it about 3 times and reward/praise if they stay.
    2. Use release command like "break." To let them know they can go inside or come out of the sit
    3. When finished training with dog, then use release command
    (Steps: swing open door, if she stays, praise, then say break to get her out of sit

    Thanks so much for this! We adopted two puppies nine years ago, and it's been a while since we had to think about these fundamentals in a structured way. We lost one of our dogs to cancer last year. It was incredibly difficult and unspeakable beautiful to have all the love we shared and trust we built together in her final moments. We recently decided to adopt a new dog and this has been such a helpful reminder and refresher.

    Dear Thomas, I am in School for my Dog Trainer exam in Germany.
    I really love your connection to dogs! It’s really inspiring especially since I study Canine, it’s history and behavior!
    I can feel your „Aura“ and „charisma“ you send to the dog passiv.. I hope you know what I mean with this, doesn’t know the proper explanation for the word in English. Also it’s great for me to see the different body languages of the dogs! Honestly it’s pretty tough to find a trainer, who is dealing with this kind of dogs in my surrounding. Thank you for letting me learn from you good sir!
    Wish you success in what ever level.

    I think Lakota is a Dutch Shepherd. Thanks for all your tips. I’ve started leash work (heel, auto sit, and “on me”) with my mostly obedient Yorkiepoo and he’s loving it. The BREAK! tip is especially useful. I can see how it releases his tension and keeps him focused longer. He’s a smart dog and learns fast and now I feel like I know HOW to train him. Thank you for making this content free!

But the problem I have and the questions and concerns I have is that I feel like she only does the things we are trying to do out of fear and not having a relationship with me because I received her from a very abusive home where she was beaten by grown men and fighting six other dogs over food it was just a horrible situation and I'm glad I got to bring her out of that!.. but I want her to do it out of love and respect and relationship instead of doing it out of fear. God bless everyone and good luck

    Its not about a;pha. Its about good mannors. It makes life easier. And opens up opportunites for the dog to experience, that if he had bad mannors, he would not be able to enjoy. As a dog gets older, its second hand. Its just a way of life. ANd the dog knows when he can make his own decision, and when he needs to defer to the human. I really like your methods.

Back when he was a pup he did really poorly in puppy training, which made the trainer and owner think they couldn't accomplish much with him. Which is of course bullshit, he just got very distracted by everyone around him. (Which is why I'm not going to do group sessions any time soon)
    He's very toy motivated, so in my first session I played some fetch with him and asked for eye contact before throwing the ball. At first just a fraction of a second, then we got to 5 seconds. The owner put it into practice, asking for eye contact with every door, food and toy. Her kids didn't even recognize him 2 days later.

    I've been following your videos for a while now. This is the first time I have written a comment. I would like to say that this particular video was of great help. I'm a professional trainer and look up to you for information. You are a great and professional Behavioralust and trainer. I love how informative and easy to understand your videos are. Keep up your excellent work. I wish I was in your area to stop by to shake your hand. Meanwhile, here I I'm sending you a virtual fist bump 👊😊

    I had three Swissies all of them failed X-rays. Then the EX got them in the split. They are not always the easiest to train. we had 2 with CGC, and one completed 4th class in water resue. This is the first video I've seen with a Swissie.

    I really try to think of my dog as part of my team. I want her to trust that we are learning together because I can do things she can't and vice versa. My golden is obviously the easiest breed I have owned but I have had some not so calm others.

    You video are amazing and you giving me hope for my GERMAN Shepherd. One questions any advice wrt excessive barking outside of our house especially at birds or sometimes nothing. He stops when we come outside. How do I get him to stop? The situation has become so bad. Please help.
