      @@tomdavisofficial I find that so many people want instant results. I have to remind them that they can only teach their dogs as fast as their dogs can learn. I especially like how you return to your dog to release him from "Stay"; I always teach this. I'm going to "steal" your reason why - to reward while they are still "staying". BTW - I also "stole" your "Break" and added it to my list of release words I suggest to my students.

    I really enjoy your calmness and patience with the dogs!!! You really explain the what and why well, too. But I must admit, I almost did not watch your videos when RUclips first threw one at me.....MY bad.....I judged your book by its cover and nearly avoided you because of tatoos and pitbulls. Says far more about ME than anyone!!! Glad I watched. You do have a gift!!! As I have come to realize in recent years, everything I ever needed to know in life, I learned from my dog!!! And my dog would have known instantly that you're friend material because he was not taught the prejudices that I have carried and now wisely set aside.
    I'm nearly 60, female, raised Catholic and pretty much live under a rock in case anyone reads this and wonders about my background.

    Just started to watch all your videos. I put my service dog Raven to rest on 5/23/22 she was a Doberman. We did a board and train from the breeder we got her from and she came to us at 7 mounts. We did the rest of the training our self until she was put to rest at 7 years old. I cant tell you how watching all your videos helped us cope with the loss and also learned a lot of new techniques that we will use when we get our new pup the end of July. Thanks George and Stacy

    I have a BIG issue: I’m the “grandma”(with a pool) of my daughter’s 8 year lab. So coming to my house has always been a great treat. Well, we sabotaged ourselves because now when he comes for a week at a time (when she travels for work), he is in hyper-expectation drive…thinking every time I even move (like getting up from the sofa) he goes crazy; barking, spinning, etc. The nuisance barking is constant, and he is in such a frenzied state of mind he seems immune to me correcting him. How do we hit the reset button? And have you done a video about nuisance barking? Thank you!!!

    • @KannaIru
      @KannaIru 2 года назад +1

      As you’re aware, a lab has lots of mental and physical energy. He needs outlets but show the dog that it’s on your terms. When he manages to calm down for a few seconds THEN reward that with a game of tug or fetch. If he likes food, do short sessions where he gets a treat for sitting or lying still for a second, then building longer. Show him that only being quiet gets him rewarded and that there’s more to Grandma than the pool. Dogs do what’s rewarding, once you show him in small steps that he’ll only get that when he’s quiet, (if your reward timing is good) the dog will understand, and you’ll be able to burn his energy and get a calmer pup. Hang in there and good luck!

    I have a 4 month old border terrier mix that I got about 3 weeks ago.. I started training right away (not that I really know what I’m doing- I only have your videos lol ) she picks things up super quickly & does so well…. At home, her and I. The rest of the family gets home and it’s harder .. take her somewhere else- my moms for example (we walk our dogs together in her area sometimes) and it’s all out the window. The entire walk she’s trying to pull, her nose to the ground, or she’s distracted with something in a different direction. I’ve had her in different areas, hearing different sounds, etc to try and desensitize her a bit - but it just seems like if we’re in a different environment, or there’s others around- she doesn’t pay attention to me at all. I dk what I’m doing wrong. The neighbor came over earlier to play with my son- who she knows & loves- but we were in the middle of somthing so I tried to tell her to stay & she just zoomed off to him! She also kept jumping up on him (she’s very tiny, & it seems like because she’s so tiny others think it’s fine for her to do so but I don’t want that habit) I told her down, tried leave it, I popped the leash- it just seemed like it didn’t matter what I did., just like on the mini walk at my moms house earlier. I told her look at me- she ignored it. She even tried it pulling with the slip lead on , while trying to turn and bite the side of it (which she never does ) until she was gagging . Everyone in my life acts as if I’m ridiculous for wanting to train my dog- I just want her happy & healthy.. it’s very difficult when she’s around others to keep her focus & still listening, and extremely frustrating when the others are mocking me for wanting her to listen. They (husband, mother) seem to think you just let a dog me- and follow what they want. My mom basically runs behind her dog begging her to listen, OR- holds her like a baby& treats her like one, she don’t even correct her when she tries to bite people! I don’t want the bad behavior rubbing off- and I don’t know what to do
    Guess I just needed to vent
    I don’t except anyone to actually respond to this 😂

    My Texas Heeler puppy has zero idea how to heel. She jumps up in the air, hops up, and is generally hyper while being at my side. When I put a slip lead on her, she spins and spins around until it is so coiled that I have to uncoil it for a while. She gets plenty of exercise everyday, but the leash walking is our difficult area, but we’ll get there

    Once a dog masters the place command on different items, my trainer has us bring something with our scent (typically owners clothing) and teaches the dog to place on it. One of her clients pups ran off on a hike so she left her jacket by the trail and found the dog on the jacket the next day!

    • @thankmelater1254
      @thankmelater1254 2 года назад

      I'm trying to figure out a consistent way to give commands. So if I have the dog on "sit" and I want to transition to go to a different spot, would I give "break" to release from sit or just go straight to the next command with no release? If I say "break" then he's on his own until I give the next command, and I might not want him to move on his own when I am about to give a new command of where to go.

    I'm curious. Why are you teaching 'stay'? Maybe it's because I train for service work but when I teach down, I expect that to be held until released. Same with sit, place, etc. I do teach wait but reserve that for blind corners or if we're in a situation where there's only enough room for one at a time. Or from time to time I may need to get a dog to stop and remain in palace while walking and await recall. But I feel telling them down stay is telling them down but you only have to hold that if you want to unless I tell you stay.
    Actual curious question. I'd love to see an answer on this.

    Love this. My dog was trained but then two weeks out of training I fractured my knee and couldn’t walk or work with him consistently. He knows the commands but needs reinforcement. I’m trying to get him back to where he was so I can easily walk him. Figured starting at the beginning for would be a good refresher for us both.
