Burning a Hornet Nest

- This video features Mayu, a beekeeper in Japan, who finds a Yellow-Vented Hornet nest in her garden. The video documents her process of safely removing the nest due to its potential danger. Mayu observes the nest closely with a camera, noting the behavior of the hornets. Eventually, she decides to burn the nest, a method effective due to the nest being made of flammable material. The nest is set on fire and quickly burns up, ensuring the safety of the garden.

What my dad taught us is to wait for night time when all of them return to the nest, so all of them will be destroyed.
But without a queen and hive a hornet is lost and useless
Old men are the same in every country. "I don't need a suit, just fire." Haha
and ducktape
This is (or rather WAS!) a colony of Vespa analis. It is considered one of the less-aggressive species because one can approach the nests fairly closely as long as the nest isn't shaken or disturbed, and the number of inhabitants is less than that of most other species. Vespa ducalis is the least aggressive and makes even smaller colonies.
I hope you're not implying that she should have let them be. Cause even if they're not AS aggressive, they're still potentially DEADLY. Plus, the channel is literally about beekeeping, so these hornets have probably been killing her bees. Even ignoring all the factors, I don't think we'd have any problems if none of them existed, they barley even pollinate.
@@d3thl0cke64 They all have their respective functions in nature.
@d3thl0cke
Hornets have a purpose in their ecological niche where they are native. She is removing this nest because it is too close to humans, not because they should be wiped out.
Your attitude is gross. Only invasive species should be wiped out, and only in areas where they arent native.
Say you wipe out hornets. Then what? For one thing, the common European honeybee is invasive in Japan and can wipe out native bee species. Hornets stop that. They also keep the populations of pest insects like insects that harm crops down.
@@d3thl0cke64 по такой логике если возле её дома заведётся бурый медведь его не следует убивать или отлавливать, ведь он один а не несколько 😂
@@d3thl0cke64 There’s more to this than whether they pollinate much or not! Wasps are apex predators in the insect world, without them pest species like tree-eating beetles would spiral out of control. Sure this hive had to go given its proximity to people but to say we wouldn’t notice the extinction of wasps is incredibly short-sighted.
I also will say they construct a very beautiful nest. You can see the different dirts, and muds, and wood they used to make it.
Imagine collecting food for you and your buddies and everything is gone and only a few mates were there in total disbelief
Oh that camera is trippy. Wasp walking on air
So you wear protective equipment for observing the next, but none when actually destroying it? Seems counter-intuitive.
Who knows. Haha
Different people have different comfort levels and experience with the hornets, she calls the older man a mentor in other videos so it would seem he is the most experienced & has done this loads of times, so he knows when he does or doesn’t need protective gear.
She also explains that burning the nest also makes the hornets unable to fly, so there’s no risk of retaliation
@@kyetes.866things are flying demons I’m sure there’s always some risk
It’s fascinating seeing their mandables in action, most of the time you see more of the stinger. That just makes the footage of the hornet attacking the camera all the more impressive!
Omg ! Those hornets are using a camouflage nest. That tells me they are pretty darn smart.

Oh man you pull the camera away when you light it on fire. I was waiting for that part
One time there was a hornet nest built inside this retaining wall made of railroad ties at my parents. The hornets stung my mom and little brother more than once.
My dad and I went out there. We found where they were coming from, but it was just a gap between the ties. We couldnt figure out how to get to the nest without digging out behind the wall or removing the ties. My dad put caulk in the gap. That worked for a day but they chewed their way out. We were at a loss. Finally my dad goes I know, and comes back out with a half gallon of old 3 cycle gas he was going to toss. He puts the nozzle up to the hole and pours it in.
We were expecting to see it pour out of lower cracks between the stacked ties but it didnt.
Suddenly the whole tie started buzzing with a low hum. Hornets came boiling out, falling to the ground and flopping about dying. We stepped back. About 80 poured out and died.
That solved the hornet problem. Assuming that they all were killed as the gas appeared to have just soaked whatever structures the hornets built behind and in the ties.
Thank you ❤❤❤

Idk the translation is kinda weird. It simply says something entirely different so I have to choose if I want to listen or read exclusively.
I think it might be because they don't speak English? So they might just be using Google translate or smth I don't think they have a professional translator
@@GARYnickS4556 I don’t think that’s the case because the “mis”translation is not something you see from using google translate. The translation doesn’t have grammatical mistakes but they say something entirely different from what is spoken.
The strange thing is they could’ve simply directly translated what is spoken into English, but they went the extra steps into rewriting the translation for something that sounds more sophisticated I guess? but ended up sounding dissonant.
The point?
@@lucasy4790I don't know Japanese, but I am an interpreter. Perhaps it was interpreted and not translated. There is a difference.
Good job for protecting honey bees, those hornets are very dangerous to honey bees and humans. Impressive
These are not the giant japanese hornet but another species of hornet, smaller and less aggressive.
Humans dont deserve honey, they kill what they dont like......thats not up to humans.....
Thank you for putting your time & effort into creating a youtube channel from your beekeeping business. You truly are performing a generous public service. Very best of success to you! 💜 🐝🐞🦋
Even for people who do not have the asian giant to contend with in other lands, I believe your tactic will work to protect bees from varieties of hornets & wasps of those other places
Shoutout to the guarding hornet that definitely risked its life to save the colony from a camera.

why do these hornets hate cameras fr

This woman is brave.
I appreciate your videos about the hornets! I am happy you protect your bees so well from these aggressive creatures by doing things that are not harmful to the environment. I also learn from your videos! Thank you for explaining the hornets provide a purpose in nature so you do not just kill them en masse. I would be terrified of getting stung by these terrible insects and glad to see you protect yourselves! I pray you have many blessings for your important work. ☺️
You can use sticky glue trap with a small bit of honey as well to catch some of the hornets

Yep poor hornets
wtf do bees have to do with killing hornets???
@@vulcanbomber-ql4kr maybe she just generalize them
City person has very limited experience, and knows very little about living with nature in the raw.
If you were mowing the lawn near it, or accidentally disturbed the tree and you did not know it was there, they would attack you and you would die. They are very dangerous.
They clearly do not have the same attitude toward every other living thing.
@@vulcanbomber-ql4krnothing except that they are usually food for the hornets. These and the Giant Hornets will often destroy entire honey bee colonies.
