Where is the refuse to go around ?
I've watched a bunch of these videos, and it seems the person producing them is mostly just making stuff up. I wish they'd stop, but until then it's best to just ignore the "explanations".
The LIONS!
The A380 in the first clip was in turbulence close to the ground. Some pilots would refuse such an approach and go around, but this one decided to continue and complete the landing. It looked perfect to me, but it was theoretically a 'refused' go around.🙂
There was nothing wrong about that Emirates approach. Gatwick is notorious when the winds are from the south and over the old Laker hanger. Lakers revenge we call it. But, that approach was absolutely fine for windy conditions.
@@EleanorPetersonEr, no. It was a perfectly routine landing.
I have to say, the lions didn't look very scared. More like the one walking around said, "That's unpleasant. I'll just wait over here then." The other didn't even get up.
The pilot did not use he correct tactics in scaring away lions. You have to run straight at them while waving your arms above your head and making monkey noises.
Disclaimer: Haven't tried this yet.
@@ptrinch And smearing yourself with BBQ Sauce ! I hear they don't like smokey flavors . They more like a grilled onion back note on their meat !
@ptrinch I tried it. Can someone get me out of this tree?

That lion was looking at the plane thinking, “there’s treats inside that”
Was that a loin of pork the lion was looking for?

@@amazer747 No, it was Sir loin, the pilot
Lions; 1:55 "the food delivery is here".
Grubhub is here! 😂
They didn't look all that scared, did they?
1:58 Meh, the can wouldn't open.
I don't think they ever had airline food, though.
Last clip is an engine "run up" usually around 50% of N1 for few seconds in order to remove ice accretion on the engine fan blades, after which is safe to pull full thrust.
I was laughing as how would a passenger filming the front of an engine know where the throttle is set. Once again on this channel, I watch the videos and realize the collector and poster is just talking.
@@lauxmyth also, TOGA stands for "take off/go around". so by definition, takeoff power is full power anyway.
@@ScottPankhurst I knew what TOGA meant. I would guess if the person filming was a commercial pilot familiar with that model, they could judge the engine by sound. I would guess those are rare sitting in the body of the plane. MrSidestick72 seems to have a reasonable explanation. I no longer trust this channel except for the plane model and where the airport is found -- and I think there have been mistakes on that sometimes too.
@@lauxmyth i mean when conditions are bad toga is always used and even in many other cases. flex is nice for smaller planes on very big runways, but otherwise you are cutting into your safety margins a lot anyway (e.g. in case of an engine out event) as it pushes your decision speed further down the runway.
@@ScottPankhurst Not really. To prolong longevity of the engines, take off isn't done with full power every time. For 2 reasons.
1. Being gentle on the engines. They are expensive and use on the limit is very damaging.
2. In case of an emergency, where one engine stalls/gets damaged/has to be shut off/etc. the other engine needs to have some sort of reserve to get the plane up in the air, if V1 has already passed. So TOGA is pushing the engines to their limits for emergency. Normal take off is done in flex, which sets the engine power below the maximum in most situations. The FADEC is intelligent enough, modern engines are powerful enough.
Title is garbage....should say, "pilot lands during crosswind landing just like normal."
Why so angry dude..enjoy the video
@@Anonymous-pm7jflike they didn’t just make a false claim on the title, nobody refused to go around

Those RR engines on that AC 330 sound great!
Those lions could have not cared less about that little flying lunchbox
From the camera angle, I couldn't quite see their "AVGeeks" T-shirts, but they were probably wearing them. They were spotting, like the rest of us!
That Iberia Airbus is doing its best Aerosucre impersonation on that landing. Good try, but you were still waaay too high.
Thank you for including IranAir's landing in the clip.
The aircraft had a small hydraulic issue during the approach but pilots, as always, buttered the landing.
They tried to fix the issue at gate but unsuccessful and because UK does not provide ANY assistance to IranAir planes, they cancelled the return flight that evening.
A replacement part was sent to UK the next day. The aircraft was fixed and returned to Tehran with its next scheduled flight again to London and this time no issues :)
Unfortunately my dad was on that flight and he had to quickly book a Turkish airlines flight to Tehran it was a funny moment
@@Oy1606what was funny? I’ll bet he was a bit scared, to say the least!
@Oy1606 Just proves what everybody knows already. Sanctions hurt ordinary people trying to go about their business but not the goverments being sanctioned. In all likelihood, they hurt the poor and working-class people the most. The only time sanctions worked was against South Africa during the last years of the _apartheid_ regime. What they don't tell you is that the sanction struck the black radicals along with the pro-apartheid whites. When you have intransigent factions with in country, maybe the impact of sanctions on them will force them in the direction of settlement. When you have one-party regime or a populous determined to stick it out regardless of what internal disagreements they have, sanctions are not going to work.
1:35 that would be one awesome but scary St.Maarten moment!
I think the person filming may have shat themselves just a little…. 😳
where's the "pilot refuses to go around" bit?
The guy who filmed it refused to submit the video.
Those lions were just putting the thrill to the adventure
I don't remember using less than TOGA in icing conditions or snow covered runways.
And the Emirates refusing to go around? For the conditions it appeared to be a relatively stable approach; I would have continued as they did.
Contaminated runways always require a full power takeoff in a jet. Simply being in icing conditions doesn’t automatically require TOGA power.
@@RomeoJulietCharlie I suppose each carrier has their own ops requirements. What we treated as an emergency some other carriers treated as an abnormal procedure. So ours was max power in icing conditions.
It's not clear that what power is being used is even recognizable. Guess it was an easy way to create a title.
Thanks for your input.
The FADEC is smart enough to decide, what power requirement is needed. It won't be TOGA power though, because that would eliminate any spare power for emergencies.
@@kbock7383 so in something like 5 degrees C and visible moisture, you’d be using full power for takeoff? Are you talking about all icing conditions or contaminated runway? That’s certainly not what either Airbus or Boeing recommend in their FCOMs. Engine anti-ice will be on, but TO power wouldn’t usually be recommended due to increased engine wear and higher likelihood of an engine failure.
@@CerberusTenshi it depends on the aircraft. On an A320 you’d select the appropriate performance code and it would generally stipulate a full power takeoff for contamination. The 777/787 may allow a fixed derate, depending on conditions and runway length, etc, but not the assumed temperature method.

Happy to see an Iran Air Aircraft!
The runway in Montreal certainly didn't look snow covered.

This is exactly what the Pilot’s get paid for!!!! Calm wind days are easy peasy…..Excellent airmanship I must say…
Likewise . I never heard a refusal to “go-around”. I just saw a very skillful landing in turbulence.
How do you know the Airbus A330 from Air Canada has to put full TOGA power? To me it seems like a normal take-off power. I may be wrong also, but we don't know if this is full TOGA power.
01:35 bet the cameraman had to do a pants check 😂😂
What snow covered runway! TD

Do my eyes deceive? Three whole minutes of aviation?
The emirates a380 is really a wonder to fly on
Lion was like meals on wheels 😂😂😂
The Air Canada A330 does not use full take-off thrust. The initial higher thrust setting with the airplane stationary is the ice-shedding procedure. Any ice accumulated on the engine fan blades is removed by setting an initial higher N1, so that there is no compressor stall due to any ice when take-off thrust is set. The airflow through the engine is less sensitive at ice-shedding N1.
Perfect! As always. ) Thanks for video.
nice compilation thx
This was a very skilled pilot. His landing, despite the gusting conditions, was very smooth.

Great clips 👍🏾
notice that a lot of these crosswind videos take place in the UK. Did they not build any of their runways with the prominent wind direction in mind?
Yes they did but Bill Gates had other ideas. 🤣🤣🤣
Yes, East/West, but sometimes the weather has other ideas.
Schiphol has six runways: three in north-south direction, two from north-west to south-east direction, and one going from east to west.
They still get a load of crosswind landings though.
Here's a thought. The four main London airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted) have a combined total of around 2,000 take-off/landings every day.
3MOA posts around three times a week. Let's say every compilation has a bad crosswind landing at a London airport in it. 14,000 landings a week gives 3MOA three crosswind videos to post.
*My point?* It's typically windy in the UK. Tens of thousands of landings aren't badly affected by crosswinds - so the vast majority of landings are into the prevailing wind. Sometimes the wind direction changes - sometimes crosswinds are problematic. Conclusion - the airport designers took the prevailing wind direction into account.
Well a lot of the time we _did_ but as planes got bigger and as longer runways were needed there wasn't always room to lengthen them in the optimal direction.
I did not know Iran Air was permitted to fly into the UK due to sanctions.
Business before beliefs. Always.
UK Air Safety List

@@NOELTM Thanks.
Not that I'm a big fan of Iran, but I always hated the idea that aircraft parts required to keep commercial planes flying safely were included in sanctions. It puts too many innocent civilian lives at risk.
@@fixpacificaI don’t disagree, but global politics and war is messy. Arguably sanctions hurt the people more than the leaders and powerful. But the idea is they will put pressure on their governments forcing them to manage those problems and rethink their other decisions. Not sure it works that well on evil autocratic and/or religious leaders though.
There is no additional power required to take off on a cold runway like that.
1:50 "We're dropping you off for lunch!"
Why would you need more power for takeoff when it is snowy? Makes no sense. Also, how do you know it was TOGA? Also, you always takeoff with around max power right?
Snow means heavier airplane, but that means only slightly higher power setting. Take offs are not done in TOGA power, because that would eliminate any safety margin if anything went wrong during take off. Most take offs are done in flex, which means, that the pilots feed the FADEC with the location amnd conditions and it decides on its own, what power level is actually required. In most cases, take off is safely below maximum power, because that's also less damaging for the engines AMD even them, it's limited to 5 minutes before it has to be reduced to climb.
So, in short, TOGA is for emergencies, not for normal take offs.
You’d use TOGA thrust following de-icing in order to provide a performance margin. You’ve de-icing and so have added fluid to the airframe plus the risk of a contaminated runway.
Those Emirates Pilots are GOOD 😎👍. 0:42
The lions came to welcome the pilots for save landing
... and organise a meaty welcome party.
The lions ordered Roar Dash. 🤣
OMG so much snow! It really required full take off power to take off! The snow didn't push it up or forward not even a little tiny miney bit! 😢😱😵
Teeny weeny even!
The first a380 landing was butter!
If you pick up a jet out of a A or B maintenance check the first take off has to be a max thrust take off to make sure the engines are producing maximum thrust. Makes since eh.
In total they have actually given us 27 extra seconds of aviation
A330 takeoff was normal and the runway was far from "snow covered". The snow on the runway was light and patchy at worst and there would have been no corresponding decrement to the MTOW related to the runway's condition.
yeah, but in Canada they have to get the hockey players off the icy runways to let the air traffic through year round
@@coldlakealta4043 Well thought out technical reply.
I know Montreal is cold, but I didn't realize it got snow in August 😯
This pilot is to good at landing
If the A330 hydraulic systems work like the A300, then the green hydraulic system that powers the landing gear system failed. When performing a manual gear extension procedure, the main gear doors stay in the open position, because the green system that would close them has failed. Notice during the landing rollout the doors actually rise up a little toward the closed position, due to the reverse thrust airflow.

Beautiful approach why go around.
This times all comments a ridiculous.
- the Emirates did not refuse to go around. It was a small bounce.
- the bush pilot simply increased the thrust for taxi, not to scare the lion.
- the Air Canada was doing an engine ice shedding before take off. The take off wasn't necessarily at full thrust as the runway appears to be mostly cleared of contamination.
Nice landing smooth
