You know, I used to watch krebz and Mcchicken bites.... When _OBRSO_ was a huge clan I was hunting in the mig 15 and f86... when the 17 came out it was game changing. Phly was just a dude playing WT before marriage... Botime gaming....simpler times... etc.
Im still playing, now BVR and radar are insane... missiles.... Now, I watch DEFYN, and many other youtubers, but this into was awesome; I'm only 1 minute in, but the intro looks great and the writing leads me to believe I should be looking forward to a dissertation level breakdown of the status of this armament. Keep doing what you're doing, it will get you places.

As a MiG-21S player I use it every time cause I don't have a better option
I actually really enjoy this missile it’s free kills on f104s that don’t expect it for some reason
the F-104s cant really do anything against a missile launch, especially a radar one. you literally cant dodge it at any altitude, because playing it correctly means your never giving up your speed, which also makes you an extremely poor turner. And if your going for a headon, the F-104 is fucked if any missile is fired, just by means of having no countermeasures fighting all aspect missiles and radar missiles.

@@MANNYzZ the F-104 is literally a plane that is designed to go fast in a straight line, and thats its. Its who design purpose was to basically speed into a formation of bombers and be gone before anything can touch it. In a headon with a radar missile, you are going to get domed. Theres literally no other way to dodge it (at least for US F-104s)

Struggling hard with this missile, takes forever to lock and then once it does the second someone flares it just spasm out.
If you ignore the SARH missiles the aim 9es can get the job done pretty well

Radar guided missies at 8.7 are just criminal , I always see mig 21s slamming people from far distances with these bad boys in the beginning of the match

@@yokokoko499 the Saab 105 gets AIM9Bs and it's 8.3 , meaning it can face the me262 a1u1 and il28s which are 7.3
when down tier, i never fired missiles at lower tier jets, i mainly focus on enemy jets that has missile capabilty, ( i use mig19 and yak38 :') )
I use the Vautour (the interceptor one), and those radar missiles in a frontal attack are very good.
The best thing is that it is 8.7 so a poor Me262 can get slammed by it
When I started jets and used my sea vixen a lot I was terrified of these things, but after long enough you start to realise that the people who play these don't really know what they're doing and can be killed quite easily

russians got 2 planes with flares until 10.0 and both of them are not the planes that in tree line you first started to grind couple years ago
As an F8-U enjoyer I have learned to respect the SMT up high.
15 flare charges is already plenty, so I always bring mixed. Better to be safe then sorry.

Only real option for the Phantom is to get Sparrow kill. Made easier by the CW seeker ignoring chaff in a head on.

@@aleksanderf4672actually the opposite, the F-4E will runn mig21's balls dry. Especially when it starts going for a flat rate with slats out, it will never lose speed while pulling around 10-11Gs
The MiG-21S with R-3R is incredibly lethal, as it's at a low enough BR because of the lack of 30g missiles, but retains the 10.3 MF engine. Keep up the good work 🫡
Yep, I love my 21 S despite the fact that all my friends say it's a "bad plane " I think they just assume I use the r3S
i watched many videos and I still cannot manage using those missles. how to see that green square thingy on the right side of my screen ? it looks like a classic radar in my game
I swear, whenever I play with my F-4C these missiles are really terrifying when you're wondering why the hell is a Mig-21 locking you in the first place.
Sparrow D outranges the R3R. I use the F4C exactly like this MiG. But the AIM7D can be launched at 12-14mi where the R3R can launch at about 8. You splash them and their R3R looses lock as you're still head on
dude the angles and camera work in your videos is just awespme, i don't think there's someone else in wt community that does this kind of stuff nearly as good as you do

3:11 This is just my opinion, but I think the F-4C is fun to fly. It's really bad but it's so bad it loops around and becomes fun again.
Honestly haven't been able to even look at it since the Su-25 and A-10 were released.
How you gonna counter all-aspects that outclass your early-ass radar missiles in every way while not having any CM
Bring 1 mighty mouse triple-pod. As long as you catch the missiles early enough and cut your burner/throttle, you should be able to use 6-10 rockets as flares for most non-magic 1 missiles as long as you're also turning. It's not perfect nor as good as regular flares, but it's kept me from dying a good many times.

@@dutch24 Well, generally I've had a lotta luck at high altitude with the AIM-7D, and being at such altitudes puts me out of the way of the onslaught of all aspects. Even when an A-10 or Su-25 shoot a missile at me (which is most commonly from behind), provided the launch was far enough away, I can wait for it to stop burning and then do small alternating turns to drain its energy. I've dodged many R-60Ms and 9Ls in that way. F-4C is one of my favorite planes to fly in general. it has its downsides but i think its relatively fun.

Writing as a MiG-21 pilot from DCS, your lauding of the R3-R is more than just. The strengths of the missile also appear there as well, and are especially evidenced on Enigma's Cold War server. I can confirm BLUFOR pilots never anticipate radar guidance and always jink and pop flares. Occasionally they will fly head on into the missile, mostly Viggens. It's great to see the missile exhibiting similar performance across two game engines.

The r3rs are great but the 9cs blow them out the water

Idk if this is still the case due to BR changes. Most matches I used this missile, I tried to pick on targets I knew didn't have RWR. Basically makes this thing a silent killer if you are far enough away. This usually involves climbing and looking out for other radar missile carrying planes though
You know, I'm fully aware of these things carrying R-3R before getting the Crusader so when I got it, I ALWAYS arm it with Chaff & Flares(flares priority since SARH doesn't appear too often in those BRs).
Aim9cs are better overall in everything same br and they're 18gs and the ONLY sidewinder sarhs ingame
This missile just reminds me of a scaled down version of the R-24R, supershot burn time but great energy retention.
Suggestion:
The J-21/A-21 series. Most air RB players at 4.3 aren't the brightest(P-47 players) and will full-commit to head-ons at which point you can greet them with your mini 20mm cannons.
The later model P-47s were indeed used for turnfighting in real life, so the example with the P-47 is not exactly appropriate. Because of the insane thrust of the late war R-2800 the P-47Ds could actualy win prolonged turnfights against BF109s even at low altitute. There are videos about people doing it in DCS aswell. The 109 just doesn't have the thrust to stay at a good manovering speed for prolonged periods.
Don’t tell the unwashed masses about the glory of late P-47s, specially the M variant.
P-47 is fine, i turnfighted and killed many 109`s on it. So question is to whoever first started the meme of "unplayable" P-47.
Yep 100% agree R-3r is actually really good especially the premium mig 21 on Soviet tech tree at that low br. And would recommend Making your radar lock on key bind with an extra mouse button let’s you spam it so if they do have chaff you sometimes can re acquire them.

@sliky5598 all of these excluding f5 are slow ass heavy attacker planes, so you either missile them from above or get them in a dogfight

That R3R tale for WT makes me think of something "similar" a few BR below : The G.91 R/4 Nord AA missiles
Nobody at 8.7 expects a front-facing missile, so you just have to lure someone into a face-to-face and throw a surprise gift!
Just do a custom loadout with 2 AA Nords, 2 Sidewinders, and a .50 gun full of tracers and there you go!

I can confirm, the R-3R gets me most of my kills when in high alt. I love the Mig-21S (r-13 100)

“At 10.3, you’re gonna have a really tough time trying to find a flareless target” ; More importantly, most of those targets will be obliterated by 9Ls at 10.0 when facing US teams. 9Ls get me more often in the forgotten Mirage IIIC than anything else purely because of the lack of countermeasures and the fact that 2/3 of the American premiums at the tier get loadouts with four 9Ls.

remember that the MiG-21's radar, the Sapphire-21 operates in band J, a lot of early RWRs can only detect up to band I, meaning they won't get any radar launch warnings (or any warning at all) if you launch an R-3R at them.

The American Psychological warfare missile is AGM-65 on F-5E as an All Aspect Missile
Never saw it being used. I guess most F-5 players are just too braindead for it.

I love cruising around in the F-8E with 9Cs, by the time people realise you aren't sending an IR missile at you it's too late. I'll have to give it a go with the MiG-21 too.
F-8 and Mig21 are very similar as i observed. They are best played in same way, IR and radar missiles mix, climb up, kill, go down.
I find the bigger issue with R3Rs is they work at high altitude in a MM where nobody climbs, I’ll usually only find one target that can get slammed by an R3R before having to drop altitude and brawl on the deck where the R3R is pretty much useless
I usually get high alt, secure position then throw r3rs down diagonaly to give them more speed while staying above as much as possible
And those who do climb have better radar missiles than the R3R.
9Cs already beat it, and if you run into a (dogfight) sparrows you are completely boned. I have slapped lots of MiG 21 out of altitude who think their R3Rs are a match to my sparrows.
I bought the mig-21S a year ago on the new year sale and have over 400 battles in it. I very quickly learned that the R-3R was a great missile to use at that BR and found a lot of success with it. I don't use it as much anymore (because I like shooting R-24R's in my MLD), but the R-3R and Mig-21S is a great combo to have learned using radar missiles.
I’ve managed to dodge R-60s kinematically using an F-4C…I had to in order to survive bomb runs where I’d be met with 5 or so Su-25s and the odd 22/21
I kinda regret grinding the F4 rout. I got the F84 right before the F14 got added so I didnt see any point aborting my path, at least the F4E has kinda good missiles, not at its BR tho. Stock grinding sucks.
I would say the aim9c is better. It's still a aim9d that can pull 18gs, it's a hard missile to dodge compared to the r3r. Yeah radar is a little ass but it still does the job

It's pretty easy to evade missiles in this thing the F-4C can carry rocket pods which I find effective against R-60's while burning still or even in a head on with the SU-25's R-60M's and while it only gets AIM-9E's and AIM-7D's I find that I can do quite well with the AIM-7D's launching at 10km up high is something nobody expects at 10.0 and the majority of my team are just prems so getting 5+ kill games are pretty easy especially with those 3 juicy GAU-4's

Mirage IIIC is another gem in this regard. The 530 its carrying is far more capable and you can easily get a kill in a head on engagement from 10km considering rwr are far and few between, people ain’t expecting a fox 1 at that br, and it’s unlikely you’ll be unlucky to find someone else with any fox-1 at that br. There is the crusader iirc with the goofy SARH missiles but they’re far outrangwd by the 530.
i swear, no matter what i do IR missles do not care about my flares bruh, ill drop like 20 flares and it will go right by them, unless everyone is using radar missles now, even then though i bring a ton of chaff and fly really low I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO AT THIS POINT 😭
I do the reverse of this, I play the F8U and bait Mig-21s to try and R3-R me. then I chaff twice, rinse and repeat a couple times and most of them usually go back to low altitudes.
Tbf one issue with the r3r is that it only pulls 10 g I've dodged them before in f30 sabres and ki 200s kinetically without any sort of counter measures even at about 4000m. Its a funny missile sometimes I'll grant you that but it really can be frustrating to use sometimes
this is why i always bring mixed. even if 90% of the missiles i come across are IR.
I have been spading like, all MiG-21 variants lately in SIM. The R-3R is always such a ballbreaker to me, i like to carey them around especially in MiG-21MT as there is only R-60's. Its good to have some all aspect missile with you. But its just so hit or miss, literally. My playstyle is to stay low so its only good to intercept high flying planes
I tried to play F3H-2 with AIM-7C thinking i would be getting all the kills in the world at altitude, turns out the plane itself wasn't as bad as the sparrows.
Then i bought MiG-21S in the NY sale and holy shit i haven't had this much fun in any plane before, IT JUST WORKS™
5:18 "it can hit from 10km out" is just a flatout lie, as the target is flying towards you , and the missile towards him, the distance closes probably at near 1km/s so the real distance you are hitting the target is around 6km

Totally like they needed to be that high and stuck at the same BR as Yak-38s with R-60s, and planes like the F-86K sitting .3br below them with Aim-9Bs too
I love dueling against this jet with my F-8E with my AIM-9C.
I would use demon, but the missile it has really is bad and radar being even worse.
Which is why I ended up defaultinf to F-8E to use 9C and go both IR and Chaff and climb up
I have had many R3Rs fired at me when I take my F5E up to 10,000 meters. I have never died to this missile in said F5E. Mostly because I refuse to run without chaff. But also because I have quick enough reflexes that countermeasures will be dropped the moment I see the danger diamond.
you actually can kinematically dodge R60s. Its just so ridiculously difficult you might as call it impossible. I've done it once in all 200 of my japanese air RB sabre matches and it was with a gold star maxed out pilot. Theres a very specific window where you can pull 10g in one direction then basically hope and pray for no wing rip and go for a quick roll to 10g in the other direction. 99% of the time it still hits you and the 1% of the time it doesn't you've bled so much speed that you're probably dead. but you can dodge the R60 with pure maneuvers, its just god awful. Thankfully a single flare and it will turn 90 degrees straight away from you, so just don't play japan and you're fine.
Fuck R-3Rs, they are literally my Kryptonite when flying J32B. I climb to avoid 9Ls and drop behind unsuspecting A-10s and Su25s only to eat a radar missile. I can use unguided rockets as diy flares but nothing I can do against R-3R.
I learned to respect the R-3R while flying the F-4C. What really makes it dangerous is also that the Fishbed is fast as hell at altitude, giving a solid speed bonus. You might think the F-4C is the better BVR plane flying high and fast, but I dare say its radar and missiles are not as reliable as the Mig-21 with R-3Rs. The Mig just needs to get closer before firing. It's a nasty surprise in a head-on.
Cl13mk6 is also goated though, one of my best planes just because its reasonably manoeuvrable and gets aim9b's
people complain about Soviet R-3R but none complains to AIM-9C
even though i can bet, none of them knew how to use AIM-7E in their Phantoms anyway & also complains why their PD radar keeps losing the lock when enemy turns.
DCS player here, also dabbling in War Thunder. Against the opponents it faces, the R-3R is a tool that shouldn't be overlooked. In Cold War scenarios in DCS, I can confidently take a Mig-21Bis head-on into a two-ship of F-5s and lock either lead or wingman with the radar set and pick one of them off as I attempt to pass by the remainder into a climb and seek an advantageous position for a second attack. The missile's more effective than you'd think in a pure head-on pass at low altitude (as low as the radar will permit, mind) as many of the targets it faces in DCS and in WT aren't likely to have an effective weapon to retaliate from this aspect. As long as you don't get close enough to eat stray 20mm, you should be fine.
The AIM-7D is absolute doodoo. it takes way too long before it starts pulling lead. Then when it does start pulling lead it gets easily defeated because of its piss low maximum overload (and the missile putting a significant part of it's maximum overload on itself already by starting to pull so late), 15G head-on is really not that much. Then I saw you actually being able to lock onto an enemy near the ground while looking down at him (4:55), something which the F-4C's radar would never be able to pull off.
So.......i have the MiG-21 SPS K for three months....and NOW you tell me that low altitude fighting is bad for it??? Jeez luise
Im sorry but the r3r is something i rarely get killed buy or get a kill with. You can just roll and dodge it. And the aim 9c is way better than the r3r, qicker, more G and sometimes ignores cheff :3 but nice video anyways. Im back to vark vark
Its 10g and requires continues lock on. Unless someone is both deaf and blind i assure you its not the most effective weapon due to the radar warning system on most planes. And due to the way of the game design most air battle happens around 6km in the air around 10.0 br and decreases as the battle goes on, rendering continues radar lock on not just unlikely but impossible. If you wish for a pleasent experience with airrb r60 is not optional. I should know this because i owns the german premien 9.7 mig21 and i tried very hard to make it work.
Can someone explain if the aim9e is similar to thr r3r? I wouldnt know bc Iam like level 23 and busy grinding the US tech tree( half way complete I think)

Even with the rather stinky F8E radar, I still think that the extra 8g's of pull and the range of the 9C make it better. The R3R is hard to work at anything other than high alt against brain dead enemies.
Even at just afew km above the ground the 9C can get kills at 3-4km away, and at 2-3km without chaff even sentient enemies are boned.
In DCS cold war servers, the R-3R is such a menace, no one expects an all aspect missile from a MiG-21 when everyone is running AIM-9B variants.
Honestly the AIM-9C is dogshit, you use it at high altitudes and you just get sent straight back down by space climbing premium MIG-21s that can just outclimb you

The 9.7 soviet premium fishbed gets these and at those BRs almost nobody thinks your shooting radar missiles. The majority of my kills in it come from the R3R. Easily one of my favourite missiles in the game, oh and it also slaps even harder in Sim

Honestly, the only problem fighting miggers in F8-E\U is that no one in your team climbs and it turns into a 1 vs 6 duel at 10k meters

Play my F8-E and it seems like every other game someone is talking in all chat about how the don’t bring Chaff because it is “useless” so I tell them they are correct and ask them where they are going.
it would be good if people didn't know about the mig 21 bis with radars but know everyone and their mum knows it has it so people are not that stupid to just fly straight head on, if anything most are trying to get it from the sides or weaving before the mig is even in range to launch its r3rs its like that at any plane sitting at 9.7/10.0 brs its the norm if anything, would rather take the f4c with 15g pull sparrows
just a small thing: the aim9C is not the American R3R, it actually is compatible with lookdown mode and pulls 20G's, so, as it always is, America has the better toys.

Im an og player that neve had any jet since i chamged plataform 3 times across the years, i dicided to buy the mig 21 r300 bro its so good, if u keep your speed and aim the r3r in the right moment u get allot of kills
honestly, this is an easy way you can tell which players GE their way to the R60 vs stock grinding the Mig-21s because the GEers will almost never even consider the R-3R
Yes. R-3R is a shitty missile, Because it was based upon R-3S. But the all aspect capability helps together with SAHR helps it
Currently have to use the r3r on the mig-21bis against mig29's and f16's is definitely interesting but somehow it kind of works
