As someone who is fond of the fishbed airframe and has bought it I agree with everything said but the MiG-21s I feel has it's own aircraft specific play style that is primarily dictated by the aircraft's br which can't be replicated in other models such as the SMT or bis. I'd definitely say it needs honing if you look to get anything out of it but once achieved, in my personal experience its an absolute monster. A few weeks ago, maybe a month, I was playing a lot of 9.7 (British). Now, more often than not, the overwhelming majority of Mig 21 s pilots I saw were bombing half-to-three-quarters of a base. In other words, the S pilots didn't bring any offensive missiles, only rockets and bombs.

Grinded almost the whole Soviet tree with 21S, leaving massive SL in my account. Tips for grind : 2xR3r , 2XS5k rocket pods. First run into a base and rocket shower. It'll get you atleast 20k SL and decent RP. And hunt A10s or other sluggish subsonics. Never full-turn. Keep your speed around mach 0.8-1. Every hour I earned 100K RP with this method. Rocket is kind of an insurance. Better safe than sorry init?😜
So you’re the damn fucker who kept on stealing my bases in air RB Tip to anyone doing this: if any of your friendly strike fighters (i.e., not Su-25s or A-10s) mark a base, do NOT bomb that base. Just because you are faster does not give to permission to be a dipshit.
Another thing: This plane is great in ground RB since you can use it's engine power to fly in fast, knock out a few tanks with bombs, and then run back to base at top speed. Enemy SPAA at 9.7 can't fire missiles fast enough to actually mean anything to you, and other enemy aircraft get wiped. The lack of energy retention also makes it easier to land quickly since you can just snake a bunch prior to landing to bleed a ton of speed.
I have the same relationship with the Ariete. I love (mostly) how it flys (locks up horribly above ~850), has very good guns, and not afraid to dogfight with anything with it, but its A/ over BR-ed, and B/ too slow on its BR (can't even catch a Hunter). And in most games I end up flying around 10-15 min doing nothing, do to every plane (even bots, and my team) runs away from me!
So, basically it is a pretty balanced premium, with a high skill ceiling, but bad for begginers, great for who knows what they are doing, but too expensive for noobs to go for it first. I bought this as my first premium last year and took me a bit to learn its matchmaking but I have a 1.8KD with it now after 1500 kills with it. edit: its pretty fun now
by the way, remember that with the mig-21 you should enter a shallow climb once at your max IAS because unlike the F-5 and MiG-19, it can go MUCH faster the higher it is (it is mach 2 capable after all). by having altitude, it means you can maneuver more freely around by slightly diving when turning to stay above 1000 kph and ensure higher engine efficiency.
I got from Rank II to Rank VII in USSR and went from a measly 100,000 SL (for 2 years) to 3,000,0000 SL in just a month. The SL rewards are just one of the highest in all airplanes Also catching afk space climbing players such as F-104s and Harriers with R-3Rs are such a treat. This plane was my first ever premium and it was so worth it. I hope it remains relatively underrated like this
A-10s are actually very easy to counter in this plane (even without ambushing) if you know what you’re doing. Many people forget that you can simply launch your own missile to “flare” all aspect IR missiles. Another IR missile is usually the best for this but I use all radar guided R-3Rs in this plane and it works too. After that I usually let out a decent sized burst then turn before the A-10s 30mms hit. For me this strategy works the majority of the time. Also if they launch an AIM-9L from close range, you can utilize the activation time to simply dodge the AIM-9L by forcing it to attempt an ultra high aspect turn once it starts tracking. It’s not common you can do this but I have done this several times. As for planes with the R-60M, the same strategies could work in front aspect but from rear aspect you already gave them too good of positioning if you can’t outrun their missile. R-60Ms got no range.
I so, so SO strongly respect your balanced view of the plane. You dont needlessly hype it like certain youtubers cough cough which is absolutely brilliant for people making financial decisions on war thunder
Also, the MIG21 SMT is by far the best plane to learn to get good at jets. It was such a struggle for a while, but that jet made me. I'm a pretty good player now, and it's all thanks to all the lessons and tricks the SMT taught me. I haven't played it in like two years now, but its firmly has like 800 matches on my stat card with a 3 or so KD 60% WR. Such a good plane once learnt, but you'll learn to hate good F5Cs and F5E players more than your worst enemy
This is probably one of my favorite Jets to play. Im at almost 400 battles in it and still love it. There is something really enjoyable about popping unsuspecting players with a radar missile. No flares isnt as big of an issue as you might think, there are only a few jets that have missiles to worry about. Overall its a solid jet and Ive always been surprised by the hate it gets.
This is my favorite plane in the game. Once you get a hang of it and the missiles that don’t pull, I’m usually getting 3-6 kills reliably before I have to return to base
I feel like the meaning of OP has been lost, it doesn't mean good, it means Over Powered. Which means the vehicle is so good that anyone can just pick it up and do well, largely irrelevant of skill level or what you are up against, which this is not.
R3R best missile ngl I have like 250 kills in this jet and 200 of them is probably from R3R. In high alts just sling them to the afk starfighters is so satisfying

Bought this from a sale 2 years ago, first i regretted it but, after trying it out on matches a few more, i found it really powerful and amazing on CAS and Air Combats, despite the fact it doesnt have countermeasures and bad manoeuvrability, Its missile, radar lock and engine is extremely powerful, It can outrun missiles easily with the speed of it, and for CAS its extremely fast speed can also easily outrun SPAAs eyes, with the powerful S24 you can destroy any ground vehicles with this beast, ive gotten from rank 5 air to 7 in weeks
instead of atempting to dodge magic 1, r-60 and aim 9l you should try just out running them in a strait line it worked for me as long as i keeped your speed at around mach 1 and for magics and aim 9ls they launched it at about 1.9 km. a slight climb can help to but only once the moter has burned out
When I first got the mig21s it had a bug where you could radar lock a teammate off the runway turn on the R3R and then disable the radar, This was great because the missile was still technically on so you could space climb lock someone and fire instantly and they had 0 time to react in the head on. It was literally a sl printer
I bought it couple months back as someone who didnt have any jets at the time, it was terrible for the first week but soon enough i learnt it and now i easily get 3+ kills a match and almost at top tier soviet jets
The mig 21S, rn im grinding it for my brother on the USSR tech tree, I predict that by the of july I can possibly unlock tier 5th it is a good plane even if you don't have a premium time. yes it doesn't have the best, radars, missiles and energy saving, it is still a killer when you use the radar missiles correctly, and downtiers are like you being the predator, and the others children's running around.
I love this aircraft, when it first came out I was getting at least 3 kills per match, in a downtier id get 6-7 only because no one expected the head-on missiles
that gameplay was very well commentated actually for what it was I'm familiar with the 9.7 matchmaker and it can be seal clubbing but personally I enjoy having the countermeasures to defeat flares most often
I certainly have a love hate/relation with this plane. A couple years ago when the a 10 came out all my friends bought it but i didnt have much money at the time and some left over GE. There was a sale happening and i bought a jet that was closest to the A-10 br (i was only playing russia at the time). This damn mig-21s. I was getting absolutely SALUGHTERED. Not only was it my first jet, i had no idea how much i was getting out classed by better planes especially playing at 10.0 to start. It was such a regret buy, but it was the only jet I had to play with friends. But eventually my friends took a break from the game but I kept on playing. Playing by myself the uptiers were still way too often and I still wasnt good enough to play decently in jets. So I resorted to something people on my team generally hated me for. I start bombing bases just so I could get SOMETHING out of a match because all i was doing is paying repair costs. granted this is not a CAS plan so at best i could get a base down to half health and then I would just return to base and land. People on my team did not like me doing something like this but I was desperate for SL and RP and dog fighting was not working. To cut to the chase I eventually grinded out enough SL to sustain myself in the game and grinded through a lot of the russian tech tree and even started 2 other tech trees to grind through because I was really good on SL and that economy rework definitely helped. So I eventually went back to the mig-21s and started to dog fight for real. Honestly, as long as Iwas fighting at br I was doing pretty fine. Not great, but now im much better at jets and I no longer fear going broke. Honestly, even on sale I would NEVER recommend this plan. But it does have a place in my hear for being my first jet and I've always been a fan of fishbeds anyway.
Got this on 50% off. Have a 4:1 KD in it. Most people don't anticipate a radar guided missile from 5km away from the front. It's also incredibly fun to dogfight in.
as a player with 4:1 KDR ratio with MiG-21S playing solo air RB, making this plane any better would be making it outright OP. Its not for beginners but IMO planes in wt should be rated by what can experienced player do with it not a newbie.
you can use a rocket pod as poor man's flares but on a plane like this with such limited hard points you're giving up quite a lot of firepower. If you can spend the extra money, mig23ml is leagues better. Literally one of, if not the best premium jet. It carried me all the way to the mig-29 and I'm still flying it occasionally to grind other parts of the tree.
this goofy ass cannon does no damage and has almost no ammo. soviets had fetish in creating weapons with ultra fast firerate and giving it the smallest mags they could find
I used the Mig-21S to grind out the majority of the soviet tech tree. Honestly it is the plane that causes me the most suffering to play. I feel as if I can only ever get uptiers to 10.3 where I face aim9ls and r60s that seem to be able to completely shut out specific parts of the map for me. I feel as if the mig21 is significantly more fun in Sim, where on the occasion that you get a favorable rotation, you can essentially dominate with your speed, maneuverability, and radar.
I absolutely love this jet, bought it during the 10th anniversary and it absolutely carried my russian air TT progression. Its got generally lackluster missiles within its matchmaker but is the best dogfighting mig - it comes with a high knowledge requirement on how to kinetically evade missiles, weapon(missile) employment envelopes, dogfight dynamics & how to best employ delta wing fighters. I find that new players can really hate it and thats due to them simply not having the knowledge and experience to use it - but if you are an experienced jet player looking to jump into the russian TT its an amazing pick and you can absolutely rinse lobbies with it. If you enjoy using high skill aircraft & prefer dogfights over missiles then this is the mig21 for u.
Tbh if you’re interested in this things playstyle a reccomendation to others is the Ariete. Unlike the 21S it’s much more binary in its capabilities taking more mental load off newer players, and it can handle just about anything thrown at it. It’s not supersonic so it’s more backfooted in engagements and has no missiles, but man is winning a 2v1 routinely fun.

in my experience its basically the J35A but less extreme and generally a lot easier to play. You can take 64 "flares" in the form of rockets on the Mig 21S with 2 A2A missiles, while the draken A only gets 12 rockets and cant take radar missiles. Not to mention having tracers. Though id say the Draken A is better once you get the hang of it.
I got it at 50% off with spare ge i had from buying some packs. Used it to grind ussr. It was surprisingly efficient at doing so, but absolutely torturous knowing one missile launched at me means its over. No regrets buying it tho.
Little tip take a pylon with rockets and use them as flares, you sacrifice a missile but people don't expect a rocket to take a flare and it can be just what you need to bail yourself out. This plane is so fun to fly. Just watch out for players that know how to notch the R3-R they'll be a hard fight since they know how to play the game.

Mig-21S is a fun jet if you use it right. Imo it was well worth buying when I got it. I got it 50% off during the Christmas sale 2022. I’ve meant to do a tutorial on how to play it for a long time as well.
This is one of my highest kd planes (3.5 with over 500 games) but one I still never recommend to people. If you haven't completed atleast one other country without a premium to save you from the 9.0-9.7 bracket I wouldn't buy it.
I bought this premium a while back, I’m pretty sure I had a coupon or something or I was really drunk and didn’t have the patience for grinding Russian air, either way, I got it and I started learning how to use the radar missiles and oh my god they are so good
This isnt a plane for unexperienced players, if you dont plan ahead and are aware of what your are doing you are going to have a hard time on this plane, specially on uptiers.
I don't think its great right now. I bought it on release and it was quite good. I enjoyed it then. Now days the 9.7 match maker isnt nearly as good as it was 2ish years ago. The plane itself is pretty good. Edit: Gaijin also decided to ruin one of my favorite things about the MiG 21 series in general, which was the 4x S-24 CAS option. They fire in sets of 2 now instead of individually. Sagde.
Played it... I used 4 R3R (full radar missile) + 1 gunpod. The radar misille 70% kills (mostly head on) and 30% gunpod. only the radar is somewhat hard to lock target, even tho from low to high alt, but for 9.7 for me its my grinder machine
Bought it for half the price 2 years ago i f*cking love this thing my only complain is 200rd cannon. Spawn in, climb over 3000m, send R3R, instant kill.
I got this plane on sale and I do enjoy flying it. The only thing that is annoying about flying this plane for me is that with the lack of countermeasures you have to keep away from the likes of strike aircraft that can send an AIM-9Ls your way and smite you from existence. Definitely a good 70% of my deaths are from those AIM-9Ls.
The issue is that the MiG-21 SPS-K is absolutely terrible; it has PFM flight performance (which is worse than the MiG-21F-13), but at a higher BR. It's genuinely a godawful plane for it's BR. Terrible energy retention and a horrible TWR, so also bad acceleration. I'll happily loose the ability to carry 2xR60 in favor of 4xR3 but with actually great flight performance.
That plane's play style is a perfect parallel to how I deal with girls. If I like the girl I use my speed to catch up to her and get into an opportune situation to fire my missile or use my guns. If I am in an unopportune situation I simply use my speed to run away and hopefully set up another engagement later on more agreeable terms or with another target of opportunity. Why would I not use the speed that I got, right? Its the perfect plane, lol. Except the lack of countermeasures. I am still trying to figure out how to switch between two types of missiles, so I can bring both R3S and R3R.
In AB the mig21s is actually an 8.7 😂 that with an aced crew and really short reload times it very common to single handedly completely wipe the enemy team 😂

The most random fact about the mig 21s is it's ab preformance, seriously this thing is actually broken in air arcade, it ruins the entire 8.7 matchmaker because it's only 9.0 there and doesn't have a real counter in a non up teir
these things are the bane of my existence whenever I play my T-2 Early, but at least it also doesn't have flares though I wonder if it can also benefit from using rocket pods as tesco own brand flares (I run 1-2 Zuni pods on my T-2 and they work surprisingly well especially in front aspect against Su-25s and whatnot)
this plane WOULD be perfect at its br if it had flares. That's it. Not having them puts it in a very uncomfortable place, and makes it sub-par in every game where it isnt the top tier plane, and even in those games where it is, given that there are planes with 18g missiles at 9.7.

I have this plane and i thoroughly enjoy it. There are times where it shows its weaknesses but overall for what it is it is a fairly adequate plane

instead of atempting to dodge magic 1, r-60 and aim 9l you should try just out running them in a strait line it worked for me as long as i keeped your speed at around mach 1 and for magics and aim 9ls they launched it at about 1.9 km. a slight climb can help to but only once the moter has burned out

When I first got the mig21s it had a bug where you could radar lock a teammate off the runway turn on the R3R and then disable the radar, This was great because the missile was still technically on so you could space climb lock someone and fire instantly and they had 0 time to react in the head on. It was literally a sl printer
I bought it couple months back as someone who didnt have any jets at the time, it was terrible for the first week but soon enough i learnt it and now i easily get 3+ kills a match and almost at top tier soviet jets
The mig 21S, rn im grinding it for my brother on the USSR tech tree, I predict that by the of july I can possibly unlock tier 5th it is a good plane even if you don't have a premium time.
yes it doesn't have the best, radars, missiles and energy saving, it is still a killer when you use the radar missiles correctly, and downtiers are like you being the predator, and the others children's running around.
I love this aircraft, when it first came out I was getting at least 3 kills per match, in a downtier id get 6-7 only because no one expected the head-on missiles
that gameplay was very well commentated actually for what it was
I'm familiar with the 9.7 matchmaker and it can be seal clubbing but personally I enjoy having the countermeasures to defeat flares most often
I certainly have a love hate/relation with this plane. A couple years ago when the a 10 came out all my friends bought it but i didnt have much money at the time and some left over GE. There was a sale happening and i bought a jet that was closest to the A-10 br (i was only playing russia at the time). This damn mig-21s. I was getting absolutely SALUGHTERED. Not only was it my first jet, i had no idea how much i was getting out classed by better planes especially playing at 10.0 to start. It was such a regret buy, but it was the only jet I had to play with friends. But eventually my friends took a break from the game but I kept on playing. Playing by myself the uptiers were still way too often and I still wasnt good enough to play decently in jets. So I resorted to something people on my team generally hated me for. I start bombing bases just so I could get SOMETHING out of a match because all i was doing is paying repair costs. granted this is not a CAS plan so at best i could get a base down to half health and then I would just return to base and land. People on my team did not like me doing something like this but I was desperate for SL and RP and dog fighting was not working.
To cut to the chase I eventually grinded out enough SL to sustain myself in the game and grinded through a lot of the russian tech tree and even started 2 other tech trees to grind through because I was really good on SL and that economy rework definitely helped. So I eventually went back to the mig-21s and started to dog fight for real. Honestly, as long as Iwas fighting at br I was doing pretty fine. Not great, but now im much better at jets and I no longer fear going broke.
Honestly, even on sale I would NEVER recommend this plan. But it does have a place in my hear for being my first jet and I've always been a fan of fishbeds anyway.

Got this on 50% off. Have a 4:1 KD in it. Most people don't anticipate a radar guided missile from 5km away from the front. It's also incredibly fun to dogfight in.

as a player with 4:1 KDR ratio with MiG-21S playing solo air RB, making this plane any better would be making it outright OP. Its not for beginners but IMO planes in wt should be rated by what can experienced player do with it not a newbie.
you can use a rocket pod as poor man's flares but on a plane like this with such limited hard points you're giving up quite a lot of firepower.
If you can spend the extra money, mig23ml is leagues better. Literally one of, if not the best premium jet. It carried me all the way to the mig-29 and I'm still flying it occasionally to grind other parts of the tree.
It's a hidden gem.
The R-3R works very well since barely anyone takes chaff.
And the gun, the GSh-23L, is probably my favorite cannon in the game.
this goofy ass cannon does no damage and has almost no ammo. soviets had fetish in creating weapons with ultra fast firerate and giving it the smallest mags they could find

I used the Mig-21S to grind out the majority of the soviet tech tree. Honestly it is the plane that causes me the most suffering to play. I feel as if I can only ever get uptiers to 10.3 where I face aim9ls and r60s that seem to be able to completely shut out specific parts of the map for me. I feel as if the mig21 is significantly more fun in Sim, where on the occasion that you get a favorable rotation, you can essentially dominate with your speed, maneuverability, and radar.
I absolutely love this jet, bought it during the 10th anniversary and it absolutely carried my russian air TT progression. Its got generally lackluster missiles within its matchmaker but is the best dogfighting mig - it comes with a high knowledge requirement on how to kinetically evade missiles, weapon(missile) employment envelopes, dogfight dynamics & how to best employ delta wing fighters. I find that new players can really hate it and thats due to them simply not having the knowledge and experience to use it - but if you are an experienced jet player looking to jump into the russian TT its an amazing pick and you can absolutely rinse lobbies with it. If you enjoy using high skill aircraft & prefer dogfights over missiles then this is the mig21 for u.
Tbh if you’re interested in this things playstyle a reccomendation to others is the Ariete. Unlike the 21S it’s much more binary in its capabilities taking more mental load off newer players, and it can handle just about anything thrown at it. It’s not supersonic so it’s more backfooted in engagements and has no missiles, but man is winning a 2v1 routinely fun.

in my experience its basically the J35A but less extreme and generally a lot easier to play. You can take 64 "flares" in the form of rockets on the Mig 21S with 2 A2A missiles, while the draken A only gets 12 rockets and cant take radar missiles. Not to mention having tracers. Though id say the Draken A is better once you get the hang of it.

I got it at 50% off with spare ge i had from buying some packs. Used it to grind ussr. It was surprisingly efficient at doing so, but absolutely torturous knowing one missile launched at me means its over. No regrets buying it tho.
In that case I think it's valid. I just wouldn't go out of your way to buy it with GE as a grinder, instead of buying the 23ML.
Little tip take a pylon with rockets and use them as flares, you sacrifice a missile but people don't expect a rocket to take a flare and it can be just what you need to bail yourself out. This plane is so fun to fly. Just watch out for players that know how to notch the R3-R they'll be a hard fight since they know how to play the game.

Mig-21S is a fun jet if you use it right. Imo it was well worth buying when I got it. I got it 50% off during the Christmas sale 2022. I’ve meant to do a tutorial on how to play it for a long time as well.

This is one of my highest kd planes (3.5 with over 500 games) but one I still never recommend to people. If you haven't completed atleast one other country without a premium to save you from the 9.0-9.7 bracket I wouldn't buy it.
To combat flares I use rocket pods. It doesnt always work but it has greatly increased my survivability

This isnt a plane for unexperienced players, if you dont plan ahead and are aware of what your are doing you are going to have a hard time on this plane, specially on uptiers.
I don't think its great right now. I bought it on release and it was quite good. I enjoyed it then. Now days the 9.7 match maker isnt nearly as good as it was 2ish years ago. The plane itself is pretty good.
Edit: Gaijin also decided to ruin one of my favorite things about the MiG 21 series in general, which was the 4x S-24 CAS option. They fire in sets of 2 now instead of individually. Sagde.
Played it... I used 4 R3R (full radar missile) + 1 gunpod. The radar misille 70% kills (mostly head on) and 30% gunpod.
only the radar is somewhat hard to lock target, even tho from low to high alt, but for 9.7 for me its my grinder machine

Bought it for half the price 2 years ago i f*cking love this thing my only complain is 200rd cannon. Spawn in, climb over 3000m, send R3R, instant kill.
I got this plane on sale and I do enjoy flying it. The only thing that is annoying about flying this plane for me is that with the lack of countermeasures you have to keep away from the likes of strike aircraft that can send an AIM-9Ls your way and smite you from existence. Definitely a good 70% of my deaths are from those AIM-9Ls.
dont forget the german sps-k. r-60s and flares at same BR, just have to decide between flares and gun, and only 2 r-60s (or 4 r-3r/s)
The issue is that the MiG-21 SPS-K is absolutely terrible; it has PFM flight performance (which is worse than the MiG-21F-13), but at a higher BR. It's genuinely a godawful plane for it's BR. Terrible energy retention and a horrible TWR, so also bad acceleration.
I'll happily loose the ability to carry 2xR60 in favor of 4xR3 but with actually great flight performance.
That plane's play style is a perfect parallel to how I deal with girls. If I like the girl I use my speed to catch up to her and get into an opportune situation to fire my missile or use my guns.
If I am in an unopportune situation I simply use my speed to run away and hopefully set up another engagement later on more agreeable terms or with another target of opportunity.
Why would I not use the speed that I got, right?
Its the perfect plane, lol. Except the lack of countermeasures.

Fly high! and avoid enemies with all aspect missiles. I usually Boom and zoom on this Aircraft and get 2-4 kills per match

The most random fact about the mig 21s is it's ab preformance, seriously this thing is actually broken in air arcade, it ruins the entire 8.7 matchmaker because it's only 9.0 there and doesn't have a real counter in a non up teir
these things are the bane of my existence whenever I play my T-2 Early, but at least it also doesn't have flares
though I wonder if it can also benefit from using rocket pods as tesco own brand flares (I run 1-2 Zuni pods on my T-2 and they work surprisingly well especially in front aspect against Su-25s and whatnot)
While F4C Phantom at 10.0 without manevourability and good acceleration and no flares.
I only use it for air-ground and since it now fires the 2 rockets at the same time it only has 2 shots and not 4 like before
One time I went into a vertical with a star fighter in this thing and he stalled and I didn’t
this plane WOULD be perfect at its br if it had flares. That's it. Not having them puts it in a very uncomfortable place, and makes it sub-par in every game where it isnt the top tier plane, and even in those games where it is, given that there are planes with 18g missiles at 9.7.
This was my first premium. I love and hate this plane with unlimited passion.
