    I get why car companies don’t sell the individual parts to the shift knob and it’s surrounding accessories but sometimes it really does suck when you end up with the extra parts because you need one specific grommet, etc.
    On the plus side, having a spaceball means you don’t have to worry about leather that usually goes covers the assembly wearing out.
    It’s also amazing that a simple grommet helps improve the feel and eliminate the clacking.

    • @yankee2yankee216
      @yankee2yankee216 3 года назад +2

      I think the "leather that usually covers it" is more attractive than the spaceball, though the spaceball is interesting. No big surprise this is a Volvo, which has always been idiosyncratic amongst auto manufacturers. It is in fact the Swedish cars which have always gone their own way, something which in some small part inspired my own independence. I've had 3 Saabs, but never a Volvo... I think I AM in fact the kind of person who'd want a big (actually mid-size) station wagon with a European demeanor and a manual transmission!

    • @iLupi
      @iLupi 3 года назад

      @@yankee2yankee216 I find the appeal in the oddity of the spaceball, but I do enjoy a great leather boot on manuals. Ironically I was looking at manual wagons while searching for a manual accord coupe. Either would have been great! I do love manual euro wagons, especially the Swedes!

    I'd bet any amount of money with a PCV that clogged, you'll see a huge improvement in terms of smoke and blow-by. Those K24 Turbos usually don't go bad unless there are other oiling issues. I've done about 5 PCV system jobs on these 5 cylinders and each time I'm pleasantly surprised with how it improves smoothness at idle, throttle response, and just general feel. I was initially thinking valve seals, but probably not and thank goodness since that's a real pain.

      Straightforward enough job to do apart from bottom left inlet manifold bolt (below thermostat) awkward access and only way I could do it is with 1/4 drive wobble extensions. 3/8 drive was too big to fit. Enjoy!

    • @thomassvedin8701
      @thomassvedin8701 3 года назад

      @@ElliottAlvis I have done a couple of PCV systems on V70s. Some bolts are hard to reach at the intake manifold. With the right tools it is possible to remove it without removing the thermostat. It is also good to do a leakdown test to determine if you have blowby in the cylinders.
      By the way. The glove test is a great tool if you want to be a shrewd negotiator when buying a car.

    I've worked on countless P80 and P2 White block motors. It's well worth your time to drop the oil pan and check the pcv port. So many I have worked on have been plugged solid. No point replacing pcv parts if the pan remains plugged.

    • @looncraz

      You can clean it with the pan on with the oil trap removed, I used some oil gun remover on an old abused 850 to great effect (do it with the drain plug removed, of course). Using conventional oil in a Volvo is the eighth deadly sin.

      Chronic Volvo problem - my XC70 has this issue, so does every 1st gen XC90 - there is actually a class action lawsuit about the drains being a design defect.... I had 3" of water in my passenger footwell - destroyed the amp (also under the passenger seat) which is coded to the car. Volvo dealer wanted $1500 to fix it and would not code a used amp. I wound up taking to amps and making it into one as the digital section on mine was still working....

      @@ElliottAlvis Jeah - allmoust all of them - i have many volvos and even volvo 850 2.4 from 1996 with 144 hp engine had the same problem. But it is due to bad maintenance in my opinion. Chep oils, rare oil changes, driving like a grandma - that engine needs air and revs from time to time. Since i bought that volvo I cleaned PCV system, changed broken hoses, cleaned oil pan, changed oil and oil filter each 10 000 kms - and now, 250 000 kms later - no problem at all. I think that PCV works just fine - only problem is - sometimes owners are to cheap to maintain old volvos.

      @@jaunteraudi817 PCV issues are 100% the result of the wrong oil. You need to use a fully synthetic oil.. do that and the PCV system is bullet-proof and completely maintenance free with zero valves (check valves aside) or controls involved, just simple plumbing. Annoyingly, the dealers tend to use the wrong oil for these cars, so it's best to do your own oil changes and use the highest quality synthetic oil you can get.

    I bought a new pcv valve from estonia or something like that on ebay, it was like 13$. Then you probably need to clean the oil trap, volvo just exchanges it but it is able to be cleaned and re mounted, it sits between the engine and the radiator and its just a plastic thing, just google it and you will se how it looks.

    • @soulis1000
      @soulis1000 3 года назад

      Ps: i think its the turbo that is smoking but thats just a guess. When the pcv valve goes there is usuraly a sceaming sound from the engine like when a pulley is bad or the belt is slipping and it goes quiet when you open the oil cap or pull the dipstick up. But sure there is defenetialy something wrong with all that preasure but it might just be that the oil trap is clogged.

      @@soulis1000 Volvo doesn't use PCV valves, the PCV system is always open and under vacuum... there are check valves on turbo cars, of course, to prevent boost from getting into the crankcase.

    I owned an 07 V70R, same blue color, but with the Gobi tan interior. Was a great car…until it wasn’t. It survived getting rear ended by an F150, which wasn’t terrible, but the $12k of damage when I was t-boned by a Chevy pickup really was the beginning of the end for it. Nursed it for another 10k miles, but when the angle gear blew at 235k miles, I just wasn’t willing to put any more time or money into it. Also had the computer serviced twice, same place your wagon had its computer done at.

    Don't forget to check 2 things.
    1) On the bottom side left side of the intake manifold there is a fitting with a banjo bolt. On that fitting is a tiny hose going to a larger hose and to the pcv box. Make sure that isn't clogged or broken(very brittle)
    2) If the oil drain back on the pcv box and into the block is clogged. Oil pan should be removed to clean it and prevent the oil pickup screen from being clogged.

      where do you think that humidity is coming from? your sunroof water leak pulls into your floor carpet and when it evaporates it rusts away all your bottom seat parts unless you live in an area that snows and you never wash your car all winter and get salt all over the inside.

    To your Dad I would say, on Volvos, the system does not start to show any signs of problems until 100 thousand kilometres.Also Elliot, the oil you found in the tube? At this point, I sure would not be thinking twice about it. This will be from the PCV valve system being 100% clogged. And just so you know ( many reading these comments will already know this) if the PCV system is as bad as yours and the car keeps being driven, you can totally blow the engine gasket. The oil in the tube is another thing that happens. If you go to Facebook's "Volvo XC70 owners and enthusiasts" site there are probably about two dozen full time Volvo mechanics there that will tell you everything about this car of yours. XC70s and R's are so similar, it hurts. I am looking forward to more vids, and I was SO sorry to see the evidence of the 1/4 inch of water on the carpets and parts.And you did not mention the whole wiper system parts being ordered?

    What that glove did ( *pop* ), the camshaft seals will do too (most likely the Intake cam seal), if you don’t fix that PCV pronto!
    Clogged PCV will pop the seals out and you’ll have a huge oil leak and a complicated time re-indexing the camshaft pulleys! Spent almost all of last week replacing the seals and PCV system on a 2002 C70 (same engine).

    Heyya!😃
    Before you send anything off I would use a toothbrush and contact cleaner to clean the circuit boards, often times that will fix things. The moisture creates its own tracks so to speak, but because it’s mostly equivalent to a resistor, unless the tracks or components are rotted through removing this will bring it back to life.......I think your audio amp might be too far gone, but the rest would be worth a try.
    Fingers crossed for you 😁

    Elliot, how do I convince you to switch to regular white lights and not your pink/blue set up? I wrote to you about them before. I could see using them if they were 100' away and lighting a stage performance but not in your setup. Your skin changes color, and not in a good way. Reminds me of the pink lights they shine on fileted salmon at the meat market to make them look fresh.
    I saw in this video how far you had the pink/blue lights from each other and you could reduce the bad effects you're getting by putting them right next to each other or mounted on the same stand, one on top of the other and make sure they're pointed at the same spot at the distance you're shooting at.
    (sorry to nit-pick but color accuracy has been a sticking point with me since I was a kid in the 60s and my folks constantly yelled at me to leave the new color tv alone, but visitors remarked how good it's color was after I was done with it. In my color photography class my college instructor had me checking other student's prints and advising them what color filter pack to use.)

    • @ElliottAlvis
      @ElliottAlvis  3 года назад +1

      Hey Robert. I remember you writing me about this in the past. The lighting setup was designed by my dad, who has a *ton* of theater light design experience. It works great if I’m in the correct spot, but if I move around at all, or hold the camera by hand, it can change color pretty drastically. Currently I’m waiting on a more permanent lighting fixture to be installed overhead instead of on stands. I think when that occurs, I can make some adjustments.
