Tricks for TIG Welding Big Gap Without Notching Thin Pipe

  • Hello everyone.
    A number of pretreatment operations are required to connect a branch pipe to a thin pipe.
    Pipe cutting, hole drilling, pipe notching, grinding, etc.
    Without such pre-treatment, wide gaps between the pipes are opened.
    If large gaps are created between thin pipes, the welding operation becomes difficult.
    Today, I will introduce some tips & tricks to overcome this case.
    Thanks for watching and have a nice week.

    Years ago I welded for Trackmaster Racing frames in Southern California. We welded motorcycle racing frames and had the entire contract for welding Redline BMX frames of thin wall 4130 Chromoly tubing. We basically did the same technique but since we used foot control pedal we would "pump" the pedal and not extinguish the arc, essentially manual pulsing controlling min and max amperage with your foot. When I first started there in the late 70's I had never seen that technique before....... All the welders madly pumping their pedals. As you got good you could do it really fast and melt rod into the gaps before burning away an edge of the tube. It was our signature weld, and quite beautiful and unique when done well. I still use it today frequently.

    I find the interesting taht you are not running a continuous arc......sure looks like a better way to weld to me, I must try this technique.......Paul

    • @benz-share9058
      @benz-share9058 Год назад

      Good observation! Is the no-arc pause a way to let the joint cool and avoid more general overheating? Could you instead just drop down to a minimal current (say 5 amps or whatever the welder will do as a minimum) and avoid extinguishing and restarting the arc? Seems like a useful technique to choose a big filler rod, but it may take practice to use such a large current and get most of the heat into melting the rod and avoid melting a hole in either of the base materials.

    Love your channel, love your content, love your knowledge and your dedication to sharing it. I looked up the translation for HAGOJIBI, and it said, "welding." I mistakenly thought your name was HAGOJIBI, so that's what I've been calling you all of this time. Anyway, thank you again for all that you do. I never fail to learn something valuable. You have my utmost respect, Sir. Salute!

    Sweet! Thanks for the tip! When you actually have a hole in the larger pipe that you’re trying to weld a smaller pipe over the larger pipe do you get melt back so it’s making the gap larger? I guess my question would be when you are welding in the smaller pipe to the larger pipe and there’s no hole drilled in the larger pipe to allow flow through what do you do it differently?

    • @jeepwk6.5L
      @jeepwk6.5L Год назад

      If this isn’t for process pipe and you have a hole saw the correct diameter to fit inside the small pipe then leaving the hole out until finished welding will help with burn back and heat sink

    Bel lavoro. Molto interessante utilizzare alto amperaggio per frazioni di tempo brevi. Trovo molto soddisfacente lavorare ad alti amperaggi. E' come guidare una ferrarti invece di una Smart. Senti la vera potenza della saldatrice.
    Tu inizi sempre il cordone di saldatura partendo con la prima pulsata dalla estremità della precedente puntatura in modo da portare in temperatura i tubi e creare un minimo di pozzanghera per la corretta adesione del materiale di apporto, successivamente tu vai direttamente sopra la bacchetta di apporto che deve essere di grosso diametro (3.2mm) al fine di fonderla completamente e arrivare alle pareti dei tubi con minore potenza perché la bacchetta ha funzionato da scudo termico ma ha creato una ampia fusione necessaria a colmare il gap. Lo effetto estetico è molto bello ed evita levigature successive. Preferirei lavorare con interruttore a pedale invece che con interruttore sulla torcia. Il tempo della fase attiva di corrente mi sembra compreso tra 0.6 e 1.0 secondi e viene gestito manualmente dall'operatore. La scelta di lavorare a 4T tiene sempre acceso l'arco ed evita il cratere finale perché riduce da 190 a 20A in modo automatico. Invece la regolazione del post-gas a 14 secondi mi sembra molto lunga per i nostri standard in Europa. Noi non andiamo mai oltre 8 secondi mentre tu non scendi mai sotto i 10 secondi. Serve veramente attendere 14 secondi?

      Hai ragione. Il tempo di ritardo del gas di 14 secondi è eccessivo. Nella maggior parte dei casi sono sufficienti meno di 10 secondi. Uso macchine raffreddate ad aria e occasionalmente uso correnti elevate. Uso molto il tempo di postgas per ottenere un piccolo effetto di raffreddamento, ma non è un fattore necessario. Può essere un consumo eccessivo come lavare i piatti con molta acqua corrente ;-) Grazie per il tuo punto acuto.
