MELODIC DEATH METAL (MELODEATH) THEN VS. NOW

- Опубликовано: 14 окт 2024
- While sharing many similarities with death metal, like growled vocals, distorted guitars, and fast drums, melodic death metal (or melodeath) is a really a genre all its own. The guitar parts take on the role of lead melody, with bands focusing on creating memorable, often classical-sounding riffs. As a guitar player, that makes it one of the most interesting genres. Melodic metalcore (or 2nd wave metalcore), popularized in the 2000s by bands like Killswitch Engage and All That Remains, borrowed heavily from early melodeath riffs. But, the original genre is still far from dead! Here's a selection of new melodeath riffs from the last few years, compared against classics from bands like Carcass, In Flames, and Dark Tranquility. Can you tell a difference between the two eras? Which do you prefer? Let me know in the comments!

Would've been cool if you put old Soilwork and modern Soilwork next to each other given how huge the difference is. Same with In Flames.
Same with TBDM
DT too. that could be its own whole video, the “old school” bands that are still doin it (seeing ATG is almost 30 made me feel like a fossil…). But hell soilwork often has drastically different styles within the same album
And Dark Tranquillity.
@@frozenmind13 TBDM hasn't really changed in any major way.
Hah, putting The Halo Effect right after old school In Flames is basically In Flames vs. In Flames
😁
Thanks for the feature, glad you liked it enough to learn the riffs! ~Alex
So cool to hear from the band! Loved your new EP
No matter what trends come in and out of the metal scene, you can ALWAYS find good melodeath. Start with the big three (In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, and At the Gates) and you'll never look back.
Carcass too!!
Once upon a world in the 90s melodic death and metalcore were archenemies. Around 30 years later they become friends luckely ;)
There is so much crossover between them now lol, look to orbit culture, bleed from within, august burns red, and heaven shall burn
Melodic metalcore was the bridge
LET'S GOOOOO!! Favorite metal genre fullstop, love to see it!!! Solid choices all around!!
Mors Principum Est is def a mood. I dig em. Good choice.
The genre that got me into extreme metal and shaped my guitar playing, to the extent I cant pick up a guitar and not play the AtG style riffs 😂
I enjoy the Jesper In Flames and the Jesper Halo Effect.... Also feel bad for some of these new bands getting played after these stone cold classics.
Hypocrisy, arch enemy and amon amarth missing on the old school side , amazing video though
Such a great video; as a fan of Melodeath this video made my night.
As soon as you put the capo on the guitar to go from B to C I KNEW IF was coming; no MDeath combo is complete without them.
Crazy how much inspiration bands took from Heartwork(album); and knowing the history of that album and how Sttercand Ammot took inspiration from spiritual healing(my favorite Death album) makes that album even more special.
I feel like people would say your missing Valtari, but the overlooked modern Melodeath band has to be Majesties, that would have completed this video. Majesties is really doing MD right.
So happy to see dark tranquility and scar symmetry in here! They’re so underrated. Arch enemy in the next video please!
They narrowly missed the cut! I have done a full Arch Enemy riff evolution video though
@@ThomasHogue I’ll check it out then! Or maybe I can suggest some Hypocrisy or Kataklysm for the next video? 🤔
Nailed it with some of my favorite bands! Dude thanks for this!
cool birthday gift dude. i love some classic melodeath
Its always a good day when a Then VS Now is uploaded. Its really nice to learn of new bands and google their music as the video ends haha Great video as always my man! Cheers from Brazil
I'm officially old and grumpy because "then" is better than "now" and it's not even close for me 😂
Both then and now are very good, actually
I love that he played Punish My Heaven
Would have enjoyed some modern material from the old guard, a lot of them are still killing it. The most recent Soilwork album is one of my most listened records of the last few years
Was the first view on this, back for a 3rd listen 🤘 these riffs are _chef's kiss_
Slaughter of the Soul 👌
I suppose the difference is the technicality and production of the new bands, and the fact I'm stuck in the 90s !!
Hot damn! Except for Black Dahlia Murder, the old school classics are pulled straight out of the CD binder in my car in summer 2001. Excellent taste, and I’ll have to get better at checking out the new releases.
Cool to see Words Of Farewell in the list
Melodeath is my favorite genre other than power metal
There are so many good melodeath bands with less than 50k monthly listeners
Don't keep them to yourself, share!
Excellent playing!
Thought it would have been funny if you had Amon Amarth from the 2000s and then from the 2020s 😂
Saddened there was no Tales from the Thousand Lakes riffs but just a minor quibble 😋
hell yeah, my boys Allegaeon getting some love
Towards the dying lands sounds phenomenal, i need to investigate...
You Miss Dethklok on the list.
Thanks, it is fun. What you used for distortion?
I use Helix Native plugin for guitar tones!
I don't listen to melodeath but it seems it's one of the rare genres that has stayed true to itself and has remained awesome throughout time
I think the exact opposite.
@@kokojumbo972many melodeath bands have evolved out of the genre (yes, In Flames, I'm looking at you), but at the same time, many new bands are being born and existing bands from other genres are evolving into it, so it, as a whole, has remained solid.
Where is kalmah?
Same! No Kalmah is such a crime
Love it
Allegaeon mentioned RAHHHHH
Nocturnal is almost 20 years old?? But in my mind, it's still their new album because it came out after I discovered Miasma \m/
Bodom perkele❤
Soilwork
No Be'lakor?
Great stuff though
If you took your glasses off youd look like James Justice era lol. Keep ripping.
"Then" is winner by KO
Scar Symmetry still the 🐐
melodeath is father of the metalcore
Halo effect sounds alot like Unearth just by this 1 riff
Halo Effect is In Flames, everyone there either founded or was In Flames at some point.
Carcass is the GOAT
Soilwork then 🤘and Soilwork now 😞
Dark Tranquillity then🤘and Dark Tranquillity now😞
Oh hell no, modern DT is still fucking awesome.
90s was much superior.
old but GOLD
Melodeath in the 90’s: pretty cool and honestly groundbreaking
Melodeath in the 2010’s+: Oh it’s all metalcore now…….
Torille🤭
No 90s Arch Enemy?
DISAPPOOOOINTED!!!
cmon dude. "modern" melodeath sounds like duckin metal core
Which bands?
@@archer7716 all of over 2020, bro. they just add micro-melodies to the riffs, depriving the songs of their overall melody. In total, it turns out that the sound is heavy, but the music is not.
True. Only Carcass that dont sound like other 'melodeath' bands now for me.
At the same time though, if they played exactly like the oldskool bands, they would get accused of biting other bands' sound too hard. As a band it seems tough to want to play music in the same vein as some of your faves because there's always this dilemma
@@omnipresent3694 He asked which bands, not which year.
You going to back up your stance or not?
