You might not see this, Matt; regardless, I want to say you were a huge inspiration to me in your playing. Players like you, Mike Watt, Joe Lally and Geddy Lee approach a bass guitar as an instrument that can be an equal to the lead guitar while also maintaining a fantastic rhythm. Time Bomb is still one of my favourite songs to play; I don't learn too many songs and usually just write my own stuff but Time Bomb and Spillage by Minutemen are two must-plays almost every time I'm playing. Watching one of my bass idols do what he does best is a real treat. Thank you for this.

I remember in the early 2000's living my teenage years listening to rancid all day long, searching for every news i could find from them with no internet. I would have lost my shit if i could have seen him playing his bass parts, showing his techniques and all. I would have started bass earlier and learned so so much.

This was such my experience. Obsessed whenever I could rarely ever catch their music, and not finding out what they were called until ten years later.

Thanks a lot for this Matt. I love that you highlighted playing with a lighter pick is better for this style of music. Mike Dirnt uses 0.73. A lot of people mistakenly believe the heavier the better but it's really not the case...at least in my experience.

      @SO-ym3zs 6 месяцев назад +1

I've also found that a lighter gauge pick works well for punk: easier to play fast without tiring your wrist, and you get a brighter, more cutting tone that's often appropriate for the style. (Good for GnR songs, too.) For other music, I tend to use heavy picks, like a 2.0mm, and for a few songs a felt pick. You can change your tone dramatically by changing picks and picking technique.

    Thank you great teacher Matt.
It's a new discovery that you're using a pick with a fairly soft texture.
This is because there is less attack sound and the sound can be heard clearly.

Super helpful. I just tried choking up on the pick so there's very little hitting the strings like you showed, and it feels so much more comfortable. The pick doesn't hang up as much when playing fast that way. Love these videos

Matt I am glad you showed this. When I first picked up a bass i started learning with just my fingers, but then I noticed that all my favorite bassists usually were using picks - so I have just started to get comfortable using them. This is a great video on some of the stuff that gets skipped like how to hold a pick shaped pick. I think I will give a slightly more flexible pick a try.

"Whatever's easiest for you, thats all that matters" is the best advice to give any player. The economy of your playing is going to determine how far you can go with it and teachers/players that stress "proper" technique, or this/that/the other thing as better than other options just pushes away new geniuses. Mayt, you are a fucking genius of the bass and great dude to boot

I haven't touched a bass in over 20 years. i did just pick up guitar again 2 yrs ago. And i thought thin was the way to go, but now i can't use anything under 1.0
Two ppl inspired me to pick up an instrument .
    Matt mcall and Cliff burton.
I walked away from it because it seemed to upset ppl around me. To the point where i couldn't touch an instrument til i thought i was dying, and i didn't want to die, not knowing how to play a song. Every time i touched a guitar, i felt guilty very weird.
But my point is it wasn't 6 string guitar player that inspired me it was two dudes with 4 strings. Bass players were not cool until they showed up.
It's a shame not to toot my own horn, but as an adult, i can see how much talent i have for music.eeehhh I'd have died if i had joined a band i was an absolute mess.heroin.
But my old man point is never to let anyone take joy from you. even if you think they're your friends or a jaded loved one.
These little things make life worth it.
And again, what cool thing for a person to do.
Like, dude had been playing music for 40 yrs ppl probably never leave him alone.
Sorry, Gene Simons is never going to take time out of his day to show some kid he'll never meet how to hold a pick.

The reason a piezoelectric pick doesn't work is the brittle nature of teh quartz cystal. Otherwise it does work for a while. And it can ignite an LED to beep in rhythm with the pick. Now you mention it. Maybe there is a positiion for a small piezo plate on a part of the pick that is not direct contact. and it could be wired 2 pick up sound. Why, i wouldn't know. But as a drum is tuned. maybe a futuristic pick could be tuned.
Anyways you hold the pick how i held the pick.
I play right up at the bridge. Quite a ways from the pickup. I found that gave richer tone on mine.

    No trolling here...
Since 95' many bands have came and went,in many fashions.
But this band never faultered to stay true to themselves and to The Cause..
29 years ago, as a teen listening to Punks having the same racist issues on the West Coast as the south, which i was living in.
Rancid gave me the fuel and middle finger to loath these individuals. I am Grateful for Punk in general.

I'm curious if you have preference on the freshness of your picks? I have a hard time when a pick is brand new, I feel like I prefer ones that are a day or two worn in. But I imagine when you play a show that those are all fresh picks on your mic stand?
