    I really enjoy the quality of this kit! Although this kit has the largest number of parts I have ever built. I decided to fill all the spaces to facilitate the future planking process...

  • @chopstyx1
    @chopstyx1 2 года назад +3

    I'm glad I read the description because I was confused at how much extra parts you were adding to a kit. I still don't really understand why it's necessary since kits usually just plank across the ribs, but you clearly know a lot more than I do about ship building so I trust the finish result will be fantastic, and that's what's important.

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  2 года назад +1

      In this kit, the planks are in one layer (because part of the frame will be open on the right side) so to facilitate the process of laying them, it is better to make a perfectly flat surface at first! Also, over time, such a planking without filling the spaces over time is deformed under the influence of humidity and bends (dents appear) between the bulkheads...

    if you want the hull of a shipmodel to be sturdy this is the way to do it. In the beginning days of my wood modeling a pensioned professional modelmaker that worked at the Rotterdam Maritime Museum showed me the logicalness of doing this. I may not always do the whole hull but i wil allways strengten the bow and sternsection and pre sand the parts down before glueing them in place. Well done!!

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  2 года назад

      That's right!
      This was explained to me by my trainer of shipmodeling, when he "disassembled my first model into splinters" - virtually of course))) And I also did not understand this until I tried it in practice! Apparently every beginner should step on this "rake" to understand this!

    Olga, I am inspired and somewhat intimidated by the excellence of your work. I am currently building an Amati kit of Vanguard. It is difficult and takes real patience to work at that level of detail and master the tools needed for it. Perhaps the most difficult part is understanding all the names of the various parts of the ship and its rigging. It's a whole new language for me and the instructions expect you to understand all of it. I was wondering what kind of preparation you had for your ship building work. It is a pleasure to watch your work.

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  2 года назад +1

      Oh, I understand you well - I've been learning the terminology from the beginning - in English. This is a new language for me in the literal sense)))

      But this is really only for the perfect planking! This not only facilitates the planking process, but also prevents deformation of the planks from changes in humidity, especially on such a large hull. This is a very boring job, but if you do not do it you will always regret just looking at the model. Now I live in a very humid climate and see my two models, that even for small hulls in this area I need to completely fill the space!

    To think back in the wooden ship building days these were made completely by hand, no power tools, and no laser cut parts. I know I would not want to do it that way, tough enough even WITH power tools. I can never seem to get past the hull into planking. I have only one hull fully planked, and it looks like crap. Started a Victory and got to the planking stage and of course messed up the lines for the setting planks. The only one I have built that actually is looking good is a Dumas Chris Craft, i'll leave doing the classics to those who can build. Amazing work here .

      I know that feeling with planking! On my VICTORY, I probably tore off the planks three times and started over, oh no - I finished her first planking on the 4th try! So with that hull, the iron was my best friend))) And probably a whole bottle of PVA was spent there!

    Very good! I understand why. But I’ve never fully filled a hull prior to planking. I do see several advantages to planking a basically solid hull. Your videos are great. But can you explain why you make this step? As you know, I have this kit in my shop. It is not next, but I am considering filling hulls with my next build Niagara from Model Shipways. Confederacy may be next… THANK YOU OLHA!!

      This not only facilitates the planking process, but also prevents deformation of the planks from changes in humidity, especially on such a large hull. This is a very boring job, but if you do not do it you will always regret just looking at the model. Now I live in a very humid climate and can see on my two models, that even for small hulls in this area I need to completely fill the space!

    Great build. I have a question.
    Why did you make a "solid " hull as opposed to frame and plank? I understand it would be more solid ( and heavy), but did the blocks really make it easier to cover?

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  Год назад

      Thank you very much!
      There are many advantages to this! The most important thing is that it will make the planking process 10 times easier. You can bend the planks with a soldering iron right on the hull and also nail the clamps where you need!
      Secondly, you will get a perfectly flat surface and it will not deform over time (usually after a few years the location of the bulkheads and the concavities between them become visible).

    its likely I would have gone with styrofoam instead of basswood.
    both are light and easy to work into shape but one is cheaper.
    maybe its the hammered in notion from back when I was studying carpentry "if it doesnt show it doesnt matter."
    but as a miniature modeler I gotta respect the lengths of effort taken with the ship.

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  2 года назад

      I use foam for small models that are planked with veneer. But for such a large hull, it is better to use linden or basswood, because I will bend the boards with a soldering iron directly on the hull. That's something you can't do on a hull with foam.

      @@OlhaBatchvarov Like Capt. RD, I think the blade on your circular saw isn't mounted correctly. It appears to not be seated properly on the shaft and is off centre - it could come loose, which would be very dangerous. You should also find it cuts a lot better when it is seated correctly, too. If this is how the saw was when you received it, then it wasn't set p correctly at the factory.
      Your videos and your ship builds are magnificent!

    great model, and good job so far; as an aside, the problem you had in the first few minutes, at the table saw, was a 'kick-back', your push stick on the right, touched the wood on the near side of the blade (this goes towards you, and down to the table), this extra pressure, when the offcut let go made the wood grab the blade, and flung it towards you, that is why most large tablesaws have guards which press downwards from above, NOT a danger at your scale of projects, but just a caution for later. ( use a push-stick like other woodworkers use, and press from abouve the wood, even the offcut piece, this stops the blade grabbing and throwing it, NEVER push towards the blade (or guard fence, if you have a small distance between it and the blade), these give the blade friction to the wood, and a chance for disaster). another safety tip, most woodworkers stand to the SIDE of the wood/saw, so if this does occur, the wood flings CLEAR of you, not straight into you, perhaps stabbing you or knocking you over.

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  2 года назад

      Thank you for your concern!
      This is probably the only drawback of this saw - it is high-speed and has a powerful "kick back"! But I'm used to it!

      @andyvan5692 2 года назад

      @@OlhaBatchvarov that's alright, I was also commenting so other people know what happened, as Bigger models and other larger projects can be made this way, and for those scales of work any mistakes can be far worse than in your work, so the more informed people are, the more they know the risks of doing things, the better.

      There are so many benefits!
      More importantly, the hull will not twist over time. Especially such a long model.
      Second, it will be much easier (10 times) for you to arrange planking. Especially when it is only 1 layer of planks.
      In addition, you have a larger area for gluing the strips, you can hammer nails with clamps anywhere or bend the planks directly on the hull with a soldering iron...
