  • Australia’s first psychedelic clinical trial for terminally ill patients who are experiencing depression or anxiety has commenced at St Vincent’s. The trial will see 40 patients receive psilocybin alongside a short program of psychotherapy and clinical support. Psilocybin is the psychoactive compound in magic mushrooms. This treatment has been shown to dramatically reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression in cancer patients, and in many cases produces a substantial positive shift in patients’ perspectives on life, and death. Please email psilocybinstudy@svha.org.au if you are interested in being a trial participant.

Thank you for the service that you are doing. It changed my life.
schizoaffective, depression, anxiety, ptsd. It fixed it all. Its no wonder they call them "magic mushrooms" but the stigma is still strong. Thank you🙏

Psilocybin Got me looking at the world differently with a better perspective when I was a young healthy adult and not facing death. Only used it twice and I'm grateful for it. The earlier you get someone into some sort or deep meaning / spiritual connection, that will only increase the chance of the person living a more fulfilling life.

Too slow for the thousands of people suffering from depression, anxiety, ptsd etc. Burn the red tape, legalise it, let people get the help they need and stop the needless loss of life and wasted years of what should be a good life for people who are just existing! More harm is caused from alcohol than psychedelic drug use. Please let's bring this to the thousands who need it!

@@sookinator my comment wasn't against her, I'm not criticising her or those trying to make the necessary changes. My comment is about the government holding back and making the progress slower for no sensible reason. I worked for a long time with people suffering mental illness until I couldn't stand to watch anymore the mainstream processes that were only adding to people's stress. I'm now advocating where possible for legalisation of psychedelics. I commend all efforts towards this end. This needs to be available to all, not only the dying.

M K speaking as someone with PTSD and severe anxiety disorder, I could not be more thrilled with the clinical research going ahead. However it only became illegal in the first place because people were abusing it. If people hadn’t abused it, we’d be many decades into this research. I am actually currently on a medication that is a controlled substance, and I would much prefer to be taking something that has been properly researched so that they are aware of all positive and negative effects. Not everyone has a positive experience with magic mushrooms and it is far better that they thoroughly research it to minimise risks

@@melissadyson161 I hope they can research it as fast here as they do in other countries. Pharmaceuticals do not all require the long term studies, many only 6 months. Vaccines don't require placebo controlled studies and they've already started testing the covid one, that's pretty quick. Many of the people I worked with abused the prescribed meds and some overdosed, they can be just as lethal if not used properly. Then there are the direct side effects of both short and long term use.

M K I actually live with some of the long term side effects of a drug I was on as a kid so...personally I prefer long term studies with some things, all research into this is really important though. We really need to invest so much more into good mental health programs

This is a great thing to help those facing the end of their life. Easing the trauma so they can leave peacefully is a good thing. Many of us have trauma we face every day and we are not facing the end of life any time soon hopefully. We still have to face potentially many more years and with treatment resistant depression I tell you the joyful moments are few and far between. Can we please have the trials extended to those of us who deserve the opportunity of a long, meaningful and happy future?

Yes, I agree. Most of the studies already done show that the health risks are extremely low with very conservative doses, so why are they limiting this study to the terminally ill? Alcohol has been proven to destroy lives through even mild misuse, but you don't see them banning that.
We need this substance to be trialed on willing participants, even if they are not terminally ill. No antidepressant has ever worked for me, and it's an enormous effort to even attempt the tasks and exercises that cognitive therapists ask me to do.
Perhaps CBT combined with psilocybin will work better. I should be given the option to find out.

Why terminally ill only. Why not across the board. Determine (evaluate it properly) that it is effective. That not only will the terminal suffer less, but the living will suffer less also?
by time anything natural is returned to it's natural state of helping us, those of us who could have benefited will be dead.

I wish this video was getting more traction, but unfortunately I only came across this now after doing my own research on psilocybin. This should be getting more media attention and coverage. I hope this substance is made available to anyone who needs it.

Positive news, I hope more clinical trials begin to occur in Australia great to see St Vincents leading the way. The only barrier is the therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) they can try to there best to stop or slow down the process of psychedelics been used in a clinical environment but eventually hopefully they to can see the enormous amount of research done there are plenty of positive results. They can't play politics forever.
