“Psychedelics shakes the snow globe in your brain, and when the snow settles, it settles in a very different pattern, allowing you to break your patterns” that’s a nice one 👏
My last experience with Psilocybin had kind of an opposite effect. I ate short of an eighth. I was to the point where I craved more. To fill the void I smoked an excessive amount of THC,(normally a bowl can last me a whole day.) And I drank way to much.(I'm not a drinker at all. Normally I cannot drink more then a couple beers/shots, before I dont want abide any more. Typically once or twice a year.) Though the cigarette thing kind of made sense. I'm normally a heavy chain smoker. Cigarettes were unfulfilling. Every time I lit a cigarette, I felt like I preferred it to be a joint. Often my cigarette use is to balance out a weed high.

Except the part about private funding being used to fund these research projects when thats not the case at all. especially in Oregon and their new psilocybin treatment
@@youwouldntclickalinkonyout6236 i think it is important to note that he mentioned a lack of "federal grants" and that being more significant than the private funding angle, especially it being in response to the AOC, a house representative, tweet. That said I don't live in Oregon and the cursory research into the laws that were relatively recently passed in Oregon did not cite that the legislation came at the tail end of a state spending bill that was enacted to put further research into this particular field of study, but news articles miss things, and so I might be misinformed.

That comment on why he felt peyote should be studied via its synthetic form instead of natural form was really well said. Kudos to him for answering and researching in a way that was respectful to what the plant means to another culture.
I agree. The other side of the argument is that it's a cactus and can be grown in a controlled setting. Peyote grows very slowly, but it could be intentionally grown in large quantities. Even if native cultures are uninterested in that as a practice, it could be done for research without affecting the natural ecology. There are FACEBOOK groups devoted to respectful and responsible Lophophora williamsii cultivation. or just make it synthetically it really doesnt matter lol
Yeah the tweet acts as if there is some nefarious reason peyote isn’t in a lot of these studies versus the actual practical considerations of how many plants there are, who is using them and cultivating the cactus v recreating the chemical
I agree. I would also have liked to hear him talk about studying ceremonial vs. therapeutic use - I feel like there is a lot of room for research there. Ritual affects the mind as well and it would be worth studying them together.
@G223 It's a very small, slow growing cactus. It would take decades to get a meaningful supply. I believe the San Pedro cactus could have some promise here, but this is a bit outside my wheelhouse.

Schizophrenic here. I tried, and used lsd for years during my lowest point in life, and it helped me - my hallucinations, visual and auditory, became much more bearable. Distorted human shapes and screaming women in my ceiling turned into cats running about, and whispers telling me to hurt myself turned into nothing more than unintelligible murmurs. It helped me accept myself and it opened up much needed and new thought patterns. I quit acid when I was in a better place, when it no longer benefitted me. Even though it helped me personally, I do not recommend people try it if they don't know what they're doing - and I especially do not recommend it to people with schizophrenia. I don't think it's a miracle drug or anything, rather, I believe that there are benefits and dangers when it comes to lsd. My experience is not universal.
do you still have hallucinations and screams? if so do you still take lsd to change them? also, even if your experience is not universal isn't it worth a shot?

I'm so glad this guy was honest about the microdosing data. So many of the studies include subjects that have enrolled themselves and these subjects tend to be psychedelic users anyway which may influence their perception as they have a positive attitude towards the substances already.
If I may give my example : I'm Bipolar and use microdosing (shrooms) because some part of my treatment were too strong. Did it do wonder ? No it's light. It did help combined to other treatments (for other parts of the disorder). I don't believe it does much for someone without any disorder but , at least for me, it does help for some disorders.

I still think most drugs should be legal, regulated and even sold like alcohol. Keep it out of the hands of dealers who cut it with dangerous stuff while making sure people are safe by having people in house to look after users. In fact having more people around to keep people safe while they have any drugs at all sounds good, even with alcohol. Safety, enjoyment and expression
Had a similar ego death as his, was going through a rough period freshman year of college was in my dorm and me and my friends took a few mushrooms about 2.5 grams each. And we are pretty experienced in psychedelics. At the peak of my trip, i go into my room and i saw myself sleeping on my bed, I went up to myself and I was dead. I went into the living room and started crying to my roommates. They were also on mushrooms so they gave me a hug, made me feel loved, and it is still the most life changing experience. I now am on my last year of college living a great life.
This video is a testament to how "mainstream" and normative present-day attitudes are toward psychedelics. Even WIRED can confidently and proudly arrange and produce a video such as this one. This symbolizes a huge shift in public opinion (and de-stigmatization) of psychedelic substances. This is good news, and the hope for progress toward legalization. Marijuana is leading the charge, and has a long way to go. Psychedelics won't be far behind. The next decade is going to be interesting.
it’s definitely great to see :) but there’s still so many people (mostly religiously conditioned) who despise all drug use and probably think of psychonauts as foolish. but you’re right, psychs are making a comeback and hopefully the recent psychedelic aided psychotherapy studies will further undo the stigmatization.

I have to admit I've done exactly that in the past, giving advice about a first mushroom experience and assuming that it would go well for the subject because they knew the ground rules. Which turned out not to be the case, he receded inwards, which isn't something that I do, I tend to be very emotional on shrooms, but they tend to make me more extroverted, where I'm normally an introvert. With him, he got super introverted and sank deep into himself and then kinda panicked, not a great first experience and not what I'd hoped for him. He didn't have a bad trip per se, but I was grateful he had a babysitter to help him through it. I don't recommend doing psychedelics without a sitter, especially if you're inexperienced. Milage definitely varies! Edit: The true psychonauts are people like Sasha Shulgin, may he rest in peace. His books TIHKAL and PIHKAL are an absolute treasure trove, and there's also the Erowid vaults, though some of the personal experiences probably need to be taken with a pinch of salt lol.

I would always tell people if you're afraid of having a bad trip you'll give yourself a bad trip. Also start with a small dose and make sure your schedule is clear for the day.
Be around good friends in a friendly place. Avoiding drunk people is a good general rule for psychedelics in my opinion. Like he said, you have to be willing to ride the wave and accept that you're going wherever the trip takes you - if you can't go with the flow you create stress and that's the trigger of a bad experience. Also, if you have mental health issues, be honest with yourself and strongly consider skipping the psychedelics unless you'll be guided through the experience by a very knowledgeable person. Those who have bad experiences a lot of the time are those that should have passed altogether.

My first time trying DMT, I had no idea what it was. I had no preconceived ideas or concepts of what to expect. My friend just told me that it was intense, and that I would have a short but interesting trip and might have some visuals. I was taken down into a world of small elf like people who were apparently already there although I couldn’t see them before, and they were very happy and excited to have me as a guest. They showed me their houses and how they lived. It felt like I was there for an hour or two, but when I “came back” it hadn’t been very long at all. I was very surprised and somewhat confused about how that happened; it was very unexpected! It wasn’t until years later through youtube and internet research that I started hearing about these little elves being a common theme with DMT trips. Very strange!

Clinical setting is not great by default: it’s too clinical. You need to feel cozy, not lights blazing in your eyes. I’m familiar with the clinical trials they did in the UK, and I wasn’t a fan of their setting either. For example, their playlist that they played for your trip was cliché hippy music. Some people like that, but I wouldn’t have a great trip with this. As an experienced tripster, I’d advise either to join a psychedelic retreat (they aren’t strictly legal, but people do them anyways, they usually have amazing settings and experienced trip sitters), or find a good friend you’d like to do it with and just go for it 😊
I don’t think clinical is necessary but in a good setting with enjoyable, trustworthy company you’ll have a good time. Just be sure you actually know what you’re taking and how much.
be ready to face yourself, do it with a friend or an experienced person, always in a controlled setting, I recommend the other person to be sober. It can be marvelous or it can be jarring, it depends on what you hold in yourself.

Psychedelic shrooms trips can be truly life - changing . It's amazing how they can bring about positive transformations and have a profound impact on our lives .
I totally agree ! Psilocybin mushrooms and psychedelics in general have shown great potential in helping people with mental health issues . It's truly remarkable how effective they can be in treating depression and anxiety .

You can really tell that Michael himself has had lots of experiences with it. Here's to yall fellow psychonauts out there. Hope everyone's having a good time.
I wouldn't describe my psychedelic experiences as a "good time." A "worthwhile time" for sure. A "productive time." But it's usually pretty uncomfortable.

Every trip on LSD causes permanent irrevsible cumulative brain damage. If you do not do advanced mathematics regularly, you will not notice the damage until it accumulates to such severe levels, it starts to impact your day to day life.
For those who are intrested. Lsd/mushrooms is a very intense experience. I would highly suggest dabbling into marijuana first (if its legal) and definitely dont think of it like the movies. Dont try it at a rave or concert for your first time. Be with a friend and listen to music. Talk. watch your favorite movies. Or be out in nature where you cant hurt yourself. All the real pros will probably agree with me. The rave stuff is cool for the experienced tripper but they know they are either tightening there seatbelts or jumping out of the plane with no parachute.
I had an ego death when I was new to tripping and didn’t know that that could even happen . I was SO young and dropped a heftyy lil tab . I’m not going to describe it but after it happened I did a dive in the web and discovered “ego death” and it was amazing and relieving to see that other people went through it too and that it’s a real experience
LSD and mushrooms completely changed my whole outlook on life..I became a better version of myself. This experience gave me a lot of confidence about myself and a bunch of bad thought/behaviour pattern were broken. One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands alot..it gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip. The main reason for the trip was my severe Depression and it definitely helped me. Before all I could do was lay in bed, now I am trying to rebuild my life one step at a time which wasn't possible before.
Without a doubt one of the most wonderful, amazing and cleansing experiences of my life was when I took magic mushrooms. I've struggled with depression for over a decade and felt like I'd left so much baggage behind after my trip. These drugs have so much potential!
I lived for six months in an Ayahuasca retreat house and never heard anyone mention elves. I think that proves your point. Ob the other hand, I went in fully expecting jungle imagery and instead got sci-fi cityscapes. Also Narnia, Disneyland and abbatoirs. My experience of changa (DMT infused into smoking herbs) was highly colourful and geometric and I took it with no foreknowledge at all.
The most important thing I learned was to practice non attachment before and during the session. Don't let negative things take power over you. Allow positive things but don't grasp them either. Just because it hurts or is scary doesn't make it important. Just watch them pass.
Yeah, this was a great one. I loved how he kept mentioning that he didn't know and encouraging that more research needed to be done. Unedited version would be awesome.
He is saying he doesn't know because he is a propagandist for psychedlic abuse. He DOES know, or else he SHOULD know. LSD causes permanent cumulative brain damage. This has been known since the earliest trials on soldiers in the 1960s.

I saw one theory that DMT is affecting the part of the brain that has to do with facial recognition, or specifically recognition of friends. so it basically just kicks that part of the brain really hard until you hallucinate "friend shapes" devoid of context. The elves are just a distilled form of what you would identify as a fellow friendly conscious entity, halfway between a person and a friendly animal and perhaps some of our more cherished mechanical devices.
Brilliant man. And I love that he never says « don’t do it » as mum and dad would. He’s all about « Go on, but beware. Acccept what may happen if you do».
Psychedelics definitely has potential to deal with health issues like anxiety and depression , I would like to try them but it's hard to source them here
"someone I know" did DMT several times years and years ago and had never heard the machine elves thing. They never saw them once. Also before using it, it was described as something that the brain creates while we dream. They never saw geometric figures and everything was swirly and 'drippy.' So set and setting were definitely in play there
it's a fascinating topic but it's hard to believe there isn't a decent amount of data at this point that would clarify somewhat whether that's just a suggestive meme (in the classical sense) that's perpetuated through trip reports or if there's something more to it. most people have never even heard of DMT, surely it wouldn't be too difficult to get groups together to test this.
@@himalayantongue Well the Venn diagram between people who are 'adventurous' enough to participate in such a study and people who are already immersed in 'psychedelics culture' is significant.

I absolutely love how inquisitive Michael Pollan's mind is, and what a fantastic critical thinker he is too. This is such a great example of just explaining what we know and don't know in a down-to-earth way. It's exciting to see psychedelics being explored in more mainstream channels.
Mushrooms are THE only thing that has had any impact on my addiction, depression and anxiety, which have had horrible impacts on my life. After breaking up with my sons mother and wishing I was dead, taking mushrooms helped me to connect more with my son and establish a new friendship and cooperative bond with my ex, feel more positive and happy, reconnect with myself and my inner child and empathise with people more, to help me see what loving someone really means and be less possessive and has renewed my interest in making music and helped me understand it better as a bonus. Nothing worked so fast, so well and with so few side-effects and at one of the lowest points in my life into the bargain, now I just take a trip once a month, I stopped using heroin and methadone completely and don't have any residual cravings, I don't even drink or use other drugs any more. I think psychedelics have the potential to create a revolution in mental health!

Typically once or twice a year.)

Makes you kind of wonder why they were made illegal in the first place. It’s not as if we need science to prove how they can positively impact our lives. There have been plenty of anecdotal evidence of this experience and benefits within Western society for the past 60+ years, and other societies for centuries+. So strange that we are allowed to alter our consciousness with alcohol but weed is still illegal 🤷♀️

Its refreshing listening to an expert saying they really dont know how or why about alot of things.
The worse thing about psychedelic drugs for me has been the people it brings who confidently talks about drugs and its effects like the same applies to everyone.
He’s not an expert. He’s a newbie.
I would hesitate to call him an expert in this field, although his own experimentation certainly gives him knowledge not held by the rest of us. He's an author and journalist. He is an author and journalist and teaches journalism at UC Berkeley.

Peyote can, literally, take years to grow again once it's picked. A lot of people didn't realize that back in the 1960s, and a lot of, "Hippy" types went out to the desert and looked for patches of peyote to pick. Due to this, the Native Americans then had a very hard time finding peyote for their religious ceremonies. Not cool at all. Some people are very ignorant.

I would always tell people if you're afraid of having a bad trip you'll give yourself a bad trip. Also start with a small dose and make sure your schedule is clear for the day.
I had a bad trip when I didn't know bad trips are a thing. Spiked stuff.
Schedule clear for 2-3 days would be best, first time around~
Be around good friends in a friendly place. Avoiding drunk people is a good general rule for psychedelics in my opinion.
Like he said, you have to be willing to ride the wave and accept that you're going wherever the trip takes you - if you can't go with the flow you create stress and that's the trigger of a bad experience.
Also, if you have mental health issues, be honest with yourself and strongly consider skipping the psychedelics unless you'll be guided through the experience by a very knowledgeable person. Those who have bad experiences a lot of the time are those that should have passed altogether.
When I did pychodelics the first time I took 2 tabs of lsd because I thought the first tab wasn't hit. I got stuck in a thought loop for what felt like forever, I kept asking what time it was🤣. I've had bad trips before but never regretted taking it.
It makes no difference if the trip is bad or good. All trips damage the brain equally.
I recently had a breakthrough psychedelic experience that changed me for life...for the better. I was a heavy drinker and I've seen the truth and understand life is too precious to just blow it on booze..and my lifelong depression is gone.
Shrooms were a mental reset for me always struggled with anxiety and depression I was about 17 when my buddy gave me a full quarter oz the trip lasted 8 hours and when it wore off I went outside and the world just looked and felt so much more beautiful.
That's really interesting, thank you for sharing!

This guy is really awesome. Never done psychedelics, but in a controlled, clinical setting I'd be interested.
Yeah it'd be interesting.
As an experienced tripster, I’d advise either to join a psychedelic retreat (they aren’t strictly legal, but people do them anyways, they usually have amazing settings and experienced trip sitters), or find a good friend you’d like to do it with and just go for it 😊
If I would had mushrooms I would go in nature
I don’t think clinical is necessary but in a good setting with enjoyable, trustworthy company you’ll have a good time. Just be sure you actually know what you’re taking and how much.
be ready to face yourself, do it with a friend or an experienced person, always in a controlled setting, I recommend the other person to be sober. It can be marvelous or it can be jarring, it depends on what you hold in yourself.

My VERY SEVERE ADHD lessened significantly by the age of 25, and by 27 i had a solid grip in my life.
It's much more related to your pre-frontal cortex development (in which you are stunted if you have ADHD) Than anything else.

For those who are intrested. Lsd/mushrooms is a very intense experience. I would highly suggest dabbling into marijuana first (if its legal) and definitely dont think of it like the movies. The most important thing I learned was to practice non attachment before and during the session. Don't let negative things take power over you. Allow positive things but don't grasp them either. Just because it hurts or is scary doesn't make it important. Just watch them pass.

That's kind of sweet in a way
Pareidolia effect?
I've had How to Change Your Mind on my shelf for YEARS and I'm finally starting it this afternoon. This was an awesome and informative video.
Brilliant man. And I love that he never says « don’t do it » as mum and dad would. He’s all about « Go on, but beware. Acccept what may happen if you do».
My parents have never told me not to try psychedelics. They’ve pretty much always trusted me to know what’s right for me.

@@deus_ex_machina_ You're totally right. Also, it doesn't sound like there are very many clinical trials being done with powerful psychedelics in general. I highly doubt anyone's going to approve funding to test something so silly when much more important questions remain unanswered.

A small dose of shrooms cured me of depression and gave me far more peace and joy for a period of about 6months after taking them. It was beautiful, right setting and intention was important though

i started taking shrooms as well. The antidepressants were just not working for my anxiety or physical anxiety symptoms im on day 4 of microdosing and haven't felt this good in months!
I am loving this new spike in psychedelic acceptance, research and content! amazing to see.
This is a recurring fad, every 25 years or so, as people stop seeing the brain damaged zombies produced by psychedelics all around them.
@@annaclarafenyo8185
Do feel free to link a single peer-reviewed study with findings demonstrating even a *correlation* between psychedelic drugs and "brain damage". I'll wait. Will probably be waiting for a while, huh?
@@seth5143 hahaha so true!!!!
I agree about the therapeutic use and I like that people have a therapist to talk it out with afterwards. They're looking at psilocybin as a experimental treatment for lupus; I have memory problems and low serotonin (chronic pain). I hope the NIH gets the funding they need for more research.
These drugs cause permanent brain damage. They will never be approved, or even studied in clinical trials, as the trials would be unethical.
Michael Pollan is an excellent speaker. I hope to see more of him.
As I never tried them (I only smoke pot), I really didn’t think psychedelics could do so much on the self’s mental health and only thought of them as recreationals drug as all the others, just more powerful. Instead watching this video was kind of mind blowing, remembers how little we can know about something and still think we know enough.

Marijuana is a reasonably potent psychedelic on its own.

people talk about ego death and wonder what it is and to me its being able to analyze yourself and your flaws without judgement and either accept them or give you the courage to realize you can change them and they dont define you. its a beautiful thing. as someone who used to have anxiety its one of the best things ever to happen to me because it changed my life and provided motivation i should have already had and did not.
Beautiful… ❤️
proud to hear this. the fact that shrooms can cause people to quit HEROIN is insane. i still haven't done a big dose yet to where something that impactful happened but i am 100% looking forward to it
@@dennismoore4977 if you're worried about taking a massive dose, just increase your normal dose by a gram each time you decide to trip until you finally reach what you're looking for. Sometimes you don't end up needing a big of a dose as you might think to come to some sort of realization.
