That bit about linking the subs to video is great. I do subtitles for every video I make at work. I find it much easier to do the transcription and basic layout in Word (usually on another laptop), export an RTF, open that in SubTitle Edit, export the .srt, and bring that into Resolve to place. I lock all the tracks except the subs because things can happen. I wish Resolve had a subtitle style drop down list since I usually have to adjust a few subs every video to go around our brand titles (which are full height and quite wide), and entering the style every time is annoying (doesn't take long, but subs are a pain). The Speed Editor works with subs and can be more efficient in many cases, and it's just more fun to spin the dial than click and drag.

Really great tutorial I love them all! Digging into ur expertise I do have a burning question, is there a simple way to motion track text to an object using cloud tracker? I am sure you will cover it but I came here because I can't seem to output mine with the settings I applied in my Inspector. They are also coming into Resolve with the wrong timecode: When I tell Resolve to insert the SRT into the timeline using timecode, it uses the wrong timecode. When I created it originally, the first subtitle starts at 01:00:29:02. But when I imported the subtitle, the starting TC in media pool says 01:00:25:11. Why is that? The new timeline I made has the same start timecode as my original sequence. The starting TC is also right in TextEdit. Also, Resolve still didn't bring in my original settings: the drop shadow, the position, alignment, text size and the font. It did change from white to yellow though.
This is one feature that Premiere is actually better at than Resolve. That is if Premiere does not crash and lock up 20 times before you can add the captions. But, that is what I have been doing. I master my video out of Resolve then import it into Premiere and use the auto caption - still need to go in and edit and proof it but much faster than typing everything manually. Hope resolve adds this soon as I am sure it will be much more efficient and stable.
That does sound like an awesome feature. I’ve never used premier so I’m not sure how it all works. Resolve keeps getting better and better, I’m sure they’ll add that in a future update. At least let’s hope so! 😁👍
Nice basic tutorial on subtitles. Is the a way to scroll or roll the text such as in a karaoke style or to roll the text up, down or across the screen? If so, can you do a video on that topic or provide a link to a video where it has been done? Thanks. Also, I like to do videos with subtitles that show one language with the translation below the original text. Is there a video showing how to do that? If so, can you provide the link? Thanks.
Thanks! If you want to scroll the text, you probably have to use a different kind of text, not the subtitle text. Seems like the subtitles are pretty basic. I don't have any videos on multiple lines of subtitles for different languages. In resolve with the Subtitle feature, you can only show 1 subtitle track on screen at a time. So I don't think it would work unless both languages were in one subtitle track on the same clip.
Great as usual but I would’ve loved to see how the plain text is when imported to Resolve and how to assign the timing, looooved the idea of your phone writing them for ya, I do talk a lot too and all my videos have both english cc and spanish subtitles, it would save me time cause youyube is a bit slow an many times misunderstand my non native accent lol
Thanks! Towards the end of the video I showed how to import a text file, you can download the free file that I linked to in the description and see what it looks like if that helps. Thanks for checking out the video! 😁👍
I don't think there is any way around some of the manual work. You could upload the video to RUclips, let RUclips make the subtitles, then download the file and work with that. Takes a lot of work out of it for you.
If you are importing subtitles that do not start at 0, then put your play head to 0 in the timeline, right-click on the captions in the media pool and choose "Insert Selected Subtitles to Timeline". This will respect the timings that are in the subtitle file.
At 30:08, you refer to having the sub-title text "already laid out in Excel or Numbers or whatever" but then about importing, it looks like only specific sub-title formats can be imported. Is there a way to bring in an "unformatted" text file? Thanks for the video!
You can edit srt files to translate into different languages, which is easier than redoing it. I can be problematic when one language divides the sentence elements differently (positioning the verb at the beginning or end), but I've found those to be the exception. I've done English as a guide for multiple languages.
Thanks for another great video Jason! I'm wondering if there's a way to randomly and automatically change the styling of certain words in the subtitles like if I want words to be bolded every now & then?
You can change the style of the text for individual subtitle clip so that it’s different from all of the rest of your clips, but I don’t believe you can change individual words within that clip. I’m not sure though I have not tried.
@@JasonYadlovski Not baking them in. I agree with letting the viewer have an option to turn on or off. Also, I would like to upload to other social platforms as well, so I'm assuming the settings would basically apply universally across the board?
Is there a way to use the text (from the normal video channel) and turn it into subtitles? I didn't find a way to do it, I'd need to use material from an old and extensive project so I don't have to retype everything
I don’t think there’s a quick way to do it other than copy paste. You could upload it to RUclips, let RUclips generate the text, download the file and then just use that.
Any ideas how to save preferences in subtitles? For example, each new video I have to revert back to yellow captions, drop shadow and centre justify. How can I tell DaVinci to save those as default subtitle settings please?
@@JasonYadlovski Thank you! Previously, once I set the subtitle preferences on a timeline, it would keep all of them no matter how many videos I did on each previous version of DV. Weirdly now I have to reset them with each video on the same timeline! Odd.

Brilliant, as usual. Thanx for the tips. I'll be subtitling a movie I'm making and this info will be invaluable. (By the way, my favorite part is the interruption at the end. Your daughter is cute but looks a little blurry. Family resemblance? :-) Peace!
Awesome! Hope the movie comes out awesome and the subtitles do too! Love those little munchkins! I blured her out, we don’t put them on social media at all. 😜
I'm not sure if you can save a presets for it, but you only have to change the settings once for all of the subtites, and everything will update accordingly
Hey, not sure if this is a new feature since you made this video but Premiere Pro has a feature called transcript which will automatically make your subtitles. I recently had it automatically create captions for a feature film (no way would I do that manually). All I had to do was double check everything and make edits because it’s not perfect, but it was a brilliant starting point.
I imagine you would make it all the same. I don’t really use subtitles in my videos, but if you were making some sort of film, I assume they would be the same. I’m sure there is some standard for editing subtitles, I just don’t know what that is.
I want to translate a German song to Polish and I wanted to do bilingual subtitles in different colours. Is this possible in DaVinci Resolve or is it the same as in Windows Movie Maker - any font changes will apply to ALL of the subtitles? Do you recommend any other movie program for this? I would be very grateful for answer.
Will Blackmagic ever fix the shortcut to add Subtitles on Resolve? I've seen some bug reports but no answer from them. Would be much easier if they just fix it.. If you dont know what i'm talking about, the keyboard shortcut option to create new subtitle in timeline doesnt work
I don't know why it doesn't work. They should fix that for sure. I found it just as easy to right click in the subtitle track and add it that way or just hit 'Add new' in the inspector. Hopefully they fix that soon! Thanks for checking out the video! 😁👍
I know I'm late to the party here but - I'd like to take already existing captions from an srt file that I've added to a timeline and convert them into basic text elements - so that I can animate them (we do sermon clips and try to do things like have certain words change size or font). Any tips on how to pull this off?
@@JasonYadlovski we poked around with it just now and you can make basic edits like changing fonts and colors by cutting a caption with the razor and then unchecking the 'use track style' button on the pieces. It then resets the style to default (which is lame) but you can then change colors and sizes of individual words. I think if we need anything more than that we would have to just copy and paste the caption text into a regular text/title object. Our silly workflow is going to be use premiere to create accurate captions automatically then import them into resolve for edit and remote collaboration work.
thanks for the video, but i have one problem and dont know if you can help me, when i add subtitles boxes the video just becomes laggy, every clip that has a subtitle becomes laggy and its driving me crazy, dont know if anybody also had this kind of problem, hel plz ;C
Do you have to wait for a second for it to render? Is the render cache turned to smart? If yes, it should speed up after the first play through or when it renders.
could you pleeeease help me? i have a problem when exporting a file with subs and then adding it to the video in youtube, the timing is wrong! that's the time in the file 1) 01:00:03,599 and here it is how youtube sees it: 03:35.. and 2) 01:00:06,603 -> 6:35 3) 01:00:09,022 -> 9:00. what should I do?
Is it a formatting issue maybe? I’d double check RUclips help to see exactly what RUclips needs for a subtitle file. Then double check that with what you are getting from resolve. Something must be off somewhere I think.
amazing tut. btw, does anyone know where the "customise caption" tick box is? is it a pro feature ? cos i only have the default "use track style" tick box. i want to be able to keyframe coloring/ highlighting my subtitle . thank in advance.

I'd select them all, then just move them where you want.
Is there a way to add some padding on the caption background?
No, I don't think they let you with the standard Subtitle text. I thought it was a little tight too.....
Once again… another great video that really helped me out. Thanks a bunch 👍🏻
You’re welcome!
thank you very much, you make my videos look better :)
Happy to help!
Much appreciation.
You're welcome!
At 30:08, you refer to having the sub-title text "already laid out in Excel or Numbers or whatever" but then about importing, it looks like only specific sub-title formats can be imported. Is there a way to bring in an "unformatted" text file? Thanks for the video!
You’re welcome! The text does have to be in one of the accept formats for it to work. It can be a text file though.
Excellent tutorial 🤟.
Cheers for all the effort man - really appreciated 🙏🏻
Thanks Gary! 😁
You can edit srt files to translate into different languages, which is easier than redoing it. I can be problematic when one language divides the sentence elements differently (positioning the verb at the beginning or end), but I've found those to be the exception.
I've done English as a guide for multiple languages.
👍
If you upload your video to YT, let YT auto generate Subtitles then export the SRT from YT, will the SRT file line up with you video back in Resolve?
You could do that and in theory it should line up. That would save some work. 😜
Beautiful J... thanks
Thanks!
Thanks ;)
Great tutorial!!!
You’re welcome!
Hey Jason! Is there a way to set the line limit of the subtitles to only 1 line?
Hey! I don’t know if you can set it to only be one line, you just need to put less text in your particular subtitle
Absolute G
👍
Thanks for another great video Jason! I'm wondering if there's a way to randomly and automatically change the styling of certain words in the subtitles like if I want words to be bolded every now & then?
You can change the style of the text for individual subtitle clip so that it’s different from all of the rest of your clips, but I don’t believe you can change individual words within that clip. I’m not sure though I have not tried.
Hi Jason, isn't it best to leave the background for the subtitles off since RUclips already adds a background?
I guess it depends on how you use the subtitles. Are you baking them into the video when you export or are you just uploading them to RUclips?
@@JasonYadlovski Not baking them in. I agree with letting the viewer have an option to turn on or off. Also, I would like to upload to other social platforms as well, so I'm assuming the settings would basically apply universally across the board?
Is this for Studio version? I have Free, and when I right-click, can only "add track", rather than "add subtitle track"
You should be able to do this in both the studio version and the free version.
@@JasonYadlovski I have the same problem... I'm very frustrated, can only do a subtitle file import
Great lesson Jason, thank you
You’re welcome Yevgen! Thanks for checking it out! 😁👍
Thanks so much for your thoughtful and detailed videos! On to the soft!
You're welcome! I don't know about all that soft talk....
@@JasonYadlovski
Unbelievable. Such a simple thing...but thank you!
Any ideas how to save preferences in subtitles? For example, each new video I have to revert back to yellow captions, drop shadow and centre justify. How can I tell DaVinci to save those as default subtitle settings please?
I think you can save a subtitle in a power bin. Then you can drag it into a new project. I think that would work....I'll have to look into it.
@@JasonYadlovski Thank you! Previously, once I set the subtitle preferences on a timeline, it would keep all of them no matter how many videos I did on each previous version of DV. Weirdly now I have to reset them with each video on the same timeline! Odd.
Great video 👌
Thanks!
@@JasonYadlovski I was at the point of … deep frustration .. when I couldnt find how to determine how many characters I want in one line 😂
BM: Why not hide it from everyone🤷♂️
How to do that pop and focus screen and black background
It’s done in Screenflow, my screen recording software.
@@JasonYadlovski ok sir thnku
Can I export both 608 and 708 files at the same time?
I’m not sure what you mean by 608 and 708 but I don’t know, you probably have to do them separately.
how to save preset, color, text, scale, position for subtitle?
I'm not sure if you can save a presets for it, but you only have to change the settings once for all of the subtites, and everything will update accordingly
Hey, not sure if this is a new feature since you made this video but Premiere Pro has a feature called transcript which will automatically make your subtitles. I recently had it automatically create captions for a feature film (no way would I do that manually). All I had to do was double check everything and make edits because it’s not perfect, but it was a brilliant starting point.
That sounds like an awesome feature! They don't have it in Resolve yet, but hopefully they'll add it in soon!
Hoping I could do that in Resolve, an incredible feature on Facebook/Instagram reels so guess it's a matter of time, we'll get em.
1.21 gigawatts You are hilarious! Made me laugh so hard. Thanks man
😜👍 trying to keep it fun. 😁 thanks for watching!
Do you format the character different from dialog?
I imagine you would make it all the same. I don’t really use subtitles in my videos, but if you were making some sort of film, I assume they would be the same. I’m sure there is some standard for editing subtitles, I just don’t know what that is.
I want to translate a German song to Polish and I wanted to do bilingual subtitles in different colours. Is this possible in DaVinci Resolve or is it the same as in Windows Movie Maker - any font changes will apply to ALL of the subtitles? Do you recommend any other movie program for this? I would be very grateful for answer.
You can do this with regular text that looks like a sub title and one subtitle track, but you can't have 2 subtitle tracks showing at the same time.
Thank you very much for answer. You're showing much care for your viewers :)
I’ll do my best to help everybody I can. 😜👍
the BBC has a universal set of subtitle guidlines it seems all the default settings fall into those guidlines.
Good to know!
@@JasonYadlovski Yeah! Thanks for the video by the way, lots of good tips! 😄
You’re welcome! Thanks so much for watching!
Jason, how to delete a subtitle clip in 18? When i delete it with the delete button, it is cutting the video length.
Try the backspace key instead of the delete key.
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks!
Thanks you bro. love you....
😁👍
I know I'm late to the party here but - I'd like to take already existing captions from an srt file that I've added to a timeline and convert them into basic text elements - so that I can animate them (we do sermon clips and try to do things like have certain words change size or font). Any tips on how to pull this off?
I’m not sure if there’s an automated way to do that. If there is, I haven’t done that.
Thanks 😃
You're welcome!
thanks for the video, but i have one problem and dont know if you can help me, when i add subtitles boxes the video just becomes laggy, every clip that has a subtitle becomes laggy and its driving me crazy, dont know if anybody also had this kind of problem, hel plz ;C
@@JasonYadlovski thank you for your reply! I will do that! but my guess so far is that youtube thinks it's minutes while it must be seconds
Great info here. Thanks for the video.
Is there any way to "soften" the entry and exit of these subtitle clips ?
I don't think so...🤔
man, thank you.
You're welcome!
amazing tut. btw, does anyone know where the "customise caption" tick box is? is it a pro feature ? cos i only have the default "use track style" tick box. i want to be able to keyframe coloring/ highlighting my subtitle . thank in advance.
I have the subs burned in option enabled .. but at final render it will not show
Something must not be correct, if you chose burn in, they would burn in. Did you select the correct subtitle track to use for the export?
@@JasonYadlovski After 6 or 7 renders it now shows up in the final :D no idea what went wrong
also subbed becuase I need to learn more :P
(check my channel if you like ;) )
So strange, glad it’s working now, thanks for the reply!
Create a tutorial on how to create Karoake text effect using davinci resolve free version
The easiest way is to use the auto captions feature....but it's only on the Studio version. Here's a video on it: ruclips.net/video/qdo3FqhcSM0/видео.htmlsi=8YuHY1hQOg5pK6rj
I have two subtitle tracks and only one of them feels like behaving a ta time. I'm trying to burn them in at the same time but nothing works for me. Any tips?
I don’t think you can do 2 subtitle tracks at once.
hi
im totally new at this and i started uding for adding sound to my animations, but my effects doesnt work. i put in reverb and doesnt reverbs (xD). Can u please tell me what could be the problem?
What kind of audio are you trying to put the reverbon? Have you adjusted the settings and the reverb window? Are you applying on a track level or on a clip level?
I think what you're doing is pretty cool, Jay. Netflix or not ;)
Thanks!
Great video, thank you..
