One detail I love about the scene where they all meet up at the entrance to prom is that Nick compliments and speaks to everyone in the group. Tao’s suspenders is the part we most notice, but he also remarks on Isaac having a bowtie just like Charlie, he compliments the girls, and asks Sahar about playing the guitar. Just seeing Nick be so happy and so well embedded into this friend group makes me so happy. I also love how Nick “the rugby lad” shows time and time again that he’s so much more than that stereotype. And, it’s also beautiful to see how much comfort and confidence he gets from this group of friends. He doesn’t let go of Charlie’s hand during this whole scene; he’s not looking around at other people. It’s beautiful to see and makes me happy for him and for Charlie.
tao reeling elle in during the dance , the same way elle was reeling tao in at the milkshake cafe in season 1 is just so 🥺🫠 i love the amount of parallels in heartstopper
You're the first reactor I've seen who noticed the parallels between the Charlie's prom suit reveal and Charlie's haircut in season 1. I've been waiting for someone to notice that!
Thank you for pointing out that Nick picked up on Tara’s distress about Darcy. I’ve always been impressed by Nick’s level of empathy for someone so young. This emotional intelligence, IMO, is what helped him be so well equipped to deal with the discovery of his sexuality.
Your videos always make a horrible morning/day turn instantly into an excellent one! Thanks for making "that scene" into it's own separate video - purely for the fact I have to prepare myself for it emotionally
Hi Thom, Okay, first off, in my opinion your hair looks fantastic! I love the length. I think it flatters your face to its full advantage. You look very handsome! So it is interesting, from a tiny detail perspective, that Tao's and Elle's faces are painted with hearts and stars only while they are dancing. Not before, not after. This corresponds to season 1, episode. 3, where Tara's and Darcy's outfits are suddenly bedazzled with sequins and such while they are dancing. Their clothes did not have sparkles before or after. When I first noticed it I was a bit confused, but now find that small touch heightens the emotional quality and idealization of both scenes wonderfully. Can't wait for your next installment!
I am so glad I found your videos. Your on depth analysis of these scenes opens my eyes to some things I never thought about and I've watched each season over 20 times.
Another great analysis Thom. Charlie's "perfect" expectations of what he thinks the reaction to he and Nick showing up had me worried that it would not be remotely like that, but since this is Heartstopper I'm glad that nothing bad happened. Nick must know that Charlie is deflecting when he asks him if he's sure he still wants to go to prom, because Nick's Charlie radar has been honed this season. Bless Nick for making sure multiple times that going to prom is what Charlie wants to do. Nick's empathy toward Tara about Darcy, and his perceptiveness that something is off once again shows how in tune Nick is with the people who matter to him. I think he worries so much about everyone else it can make him ignore himself. I'm curious as to why, after all this time and after the rugby lads apologized to Nick on the rugby field about the cinema incident, one of them didn't just turn around to Harry and say, "And where the fuck is YOUR date?? Harry seems to know what's going on at Higgs, he's got to know a few girls who are not dating anyone, and he's Harry Greene, the rich boy, and if I'm correct, Higgs is named after a relative of his - Harvey Greene Grammar School for girls. Glad he's not a homophobe anymore, but yes, he's still a dick.
I think all the moments of Tao gazing at and trully seeing Elle in her element in Paris: in the art room at the museum when she manifests her future as an artist and he photographs her; at the Louvre as she gazes at a painting and when she draws the glass pyramid - have helped him realise when and where she is trully happy. And what steps she needs to take to live her passion. And also, that he loves her for her passion.
Also it shows him loving Elle just as she is, just being herself! It's kinda subtle but it's an important and lovely message about people loving and being their true selves❤
Wow, this is an entire documentary about S2E8, but I'm here for it and excited about the new episodes about this episode 😄 I don't know if you noticed, but I love the little detail when Nick uncovers his eyes to see Charlie in prom outfit and the globe on the drawer lights up. Charlie literally lights up Nick's world (which of course he does 🙂) and Nick's casual remark "for the record, I think you always look cute" is just adorable. Btw I also think that Charlie sees the prom appearance as something he has to do because it's expected, because if it was something he genuinely enjoys, he wouldn't have suggested to leave halfway into the event to "escape from the party to hang out with each other" yet again. I wonder what will happen to Darcy in the next season(s) in the light of recent events, because her mom clearly doesn't give a rip about her, so I feel like she might just have a similar ark to Carys Last did in Radio Silence. I also feel for Isaac, as you said, just because you realize something about yourself doesn't mean you authomatically come to terms with it. In the past few months I also had some realizations and there are still things I'm not sure about (and it was actually Alice Oseman's books which got me contemplating) and I'm far from being a teenager. Also, I have to say I love how Tao literally lit up and blossomed ever since he started dating Elle, he's much more cheerful and bubbly, but also much more mature about Elle leaving for Lambert and having to "share" Charlie with Nick, although I do think his stubborness stemmed from trauma he went through when he lost his dad.
They all look so good in their prom outfits (although I do think Nick looks a bit like a businessman). "SUSPENDERS!" 😭 I love them. I think Charlie and Elle have the best outfits. I remember trying so hard to find the floral shirt Isaac wore at the bowling alley. It was was sold out by the time the show came out. That shirt and a couple of Nick's sweatshirts (e.g. the green/blue one he wears at the cinema 🤌) are so cool and I want them! Yoooo Queer as Folk was traumatising. 😭 I'm so relieved that I don't have to expect the worst all the time with Heartstopper. I think Tao's dance moves are a nod to his previous displays of choreography excellence. He did the fishing rod thing with Elle when they arrived at the milkshake cafe in S1E6. And he did his other goofy move as a part of his "interpretive dance" in S1E5. I just love how Elle and Tao are the IT power couple. 🤩 They rule the dance floor. My mind was blown when I saw that Baby Queen sang in Sahar's band. 🤯 And her cover of Just like Heaven is so good! I wish she would release it. 🫣 Not you leaving the Imogen discussion for the next part! 😱 You're keeping us on our toes! I can't wait to hear what you have to say. Thank you for the video! ✌️
Yay! Always a good day when a Thom video drops. There was a little detail that you didn't mention and it can"t be because you didn't notice, surely? When Nick is getting ready in Charlie's room, and he has his eyes covered when Charlie comes back in, the globe light is off. When he uncovers his eyes, the globe light comes on, because Charlie lights up Nick's world. I would absolutely never have noticed if someone else hadn't pointed it out (Instagram or somewhere, I can't remember who) but it's a cute little detail that tells us that magic is possible in the Heartstopper universe and I love it! Love all your insights into the characters and especially Isaac's mindset. I would be quite happy for this episode to be a four or even five parter!
Shockingly, it is in fact possible for me to miss things, which is why I'm always glad when folks mention things like this in the comments! :) In this case, I do actually remember hearing someone mention the globe, but it just wasn't in my head when I was watching this time, alas.
Before Charlie walks in the globe on the left is dark, Charlie walks in and Nick sees him and the globe is lit up, because Charlie lights up his world. Also see next to the globe is the toy donut that Nick won from the grabbing machine in series one at Charlie’s birthday..even though we didn’t see him win it.
As someone in the same age-range as you, which is a bit higher than most people making and consuming Heartstopper content, I very much appreciate the reference to the original (US) Queer As Folk.
Your hair looks so good like that, I don't think it's too short. 🤩 In this part I really wanted a Nick and Charlie prom photo ☹ I wish Charlie would have felt more comfortable at prom but I know this is more realistic.
So so excited about this video (and hope it means your head is doing better). As usual, your comments and analysis are spot on. I'm so glad you're taking your time with this episode. It deserves to be a four parter. I also think your haircut looks very nice.
I just wanted to say that I saw you upload this while I was walking home and I stopped dead in my tracks. I smiled so hard and then did a little skip thing and walked with a bounce in my step so thank you for making my day. Also for my class we have to write a thanksgiving letter and I want to write it to you. I wish there was a way I could without me having your address. What a wonderful video thanks a lot ❤
As always, I gave a little "Hurray!" when I saw the notification of this video ❤ I've tried promoting your channel on my Facebook HS group, but they won't let me. I would like to spread the word to those that need would appreciate hearing it, but I'll need to get creative... Thanks for this and all your videos!
Great analysis of Elle's prom reveal, and think about the joy her parents get in seeing their daughter happy in a 'normal' relationship with Tao, just think about how many unaccepting parent miss out on, by being closed minded, and are actuality bringing forth their own fears when confronted with a 'queer' child, like we won't get grandchildren, or see her (him) go to prom, get married etc, this proves if you support your queer child you can still have all those proud parental moments.
I love that you brought up the prom scene in queer as folk. All through season two and especially as Charlie is walking home after Prom that scene and other gay bashing scenes kept coming to mind. Like the post-traumatic stress, I see two boys having a fun prom night and Im just hoping I do not see anyone with a baseball bat. 🥺🥺🥺🥺😢
Always a pain when they cut off more than you want in a haircut but it does look good on ya. Onto the episode though, my kids look so good in their Prom outfits 😭I love the parallel between the suit scene and Episode 2 in season 1. It's so cute to see how far they've come in a year where you can see how absolutely infatuated they are with one another and Nick is so happy and confident in himself now that he can just tell Charlie he looks "so good". Will also never get over the detail that Charlie's globe lights up when Nick sees Charlie, i wanna die inside. And I 100% think NIck was ready to be fully serious about staying home from Prom if CHarlie said so. Nick is so hyper aware of Charlie's anxiety and he has given him various outs to help if needed. I also feel like Charlie's being slightly honest when he's side stepping as well. Charlie has pressured himself into being out and proud, cause we see no one actually mention or ask if Nick and Charlie are going to Prom so while realistically some people might talk about it no one would really care. I need someone like Nick who will check in on my anxiety when my People Pleaser Ass would make myself uncomfortable with fake scenarios in my head lol It's an interesting juxtaposition going from Nick & Charlie who are super happy but having underlying problems, to all three friends who are currently going through the ringer mentally, to Tao and Elle who seem to be so perfectly happy. And SUPER agree on how lovely and beautiful it is seeing Elle getting such a fairy tail Prom experience. She deserves it as all Trans kids do. Darcy and Tara just need a super big hug and while watching this now I feel like Tara is doing what Darcy does for her. Darcy tells her that she wanted to be that person she could rely on to help her be out and proud, and I feel like Tara tries to be that way for everyone else where she's the Put Together one who can be the shoulder to lean on and has everything figured out. But then like Darcy we see that Tara is just silently suffering and I'm glad she does end up reaching out to Nick to tell him that Darcy's just vanished. I feel like this show does a great job showing that sometimes it's perfectly acceptable to tell someone what's wrong and to just listen to someone. And Issac is just so emotionally drained I can imagine just trying to figure stuff out and get his brain organized again. I'm sure he's also super tired right now of reading books with romantic interests cause it just reminds him of his current state and makes him more upset. I wish to hug him forever. I love your interpretation of his outfit indecision. I do agree with most reactors that while we love The Rugby Boys and normally banter like that would be fine between friends, that normally maybe more of a conversation BEFORE going into something like that would be more tactful XD Tao and Elle's growth this season is so amazing, even ontop of everyone's growth period, but it's so sweet seeing Tao becoming more inwardly confident and letting go of his pain and trusting those he love won't leave. God there's still so much to talk about, I had a feeling this would last longer than 2 parts XD Can't wait for the final scene cause man I have so many feelings and thoughts to share and i shall force them on everyone in this comment section lol
I actually saw a reactor watch Charlie’s prom fantasy and immediately predict a QAF style outcome. So many others also predicted something terrible would happen to Charlie when he leaves Nick’s at the end of the episode to prevent him from seeing Nick the next day as promised. People are so conditioned to expect the most melodramatic and traumatic storylines! I actually think even in the Nick and Charlie novella Harry is still pretty annoying, he’s just progressed in this season from full-on bully to mostly harmless nuisance, which is how I see him in the novella too. Have you noticed how much Charlie’s prom fantasy resembles a wedding? The way they enter through two rows of people making an arch with their arms (cannot remember what that’s called lol), the way everyone has cleared the dance floor to watch them dance, not unlike a married couple’s first dance. Even though Charlie was anxious and shoving his feelings down, and even though I agree there was some OCD element of imagining perfection, I find it so sweet that those were the images his brain conjured up.
Is my hair too short? It looks the same. But is that ok? It looks the same (sluurp). Your hair looks great Thom :) I've been busy and have not watched one of your videos for awhile so this made my afternoon very enjoyable.
i love your reaction i love when char and nick holding hands walking into the prom with there friends and i love when nick looking for tara and they both suppoting each other and they both are worry about there parters and also i love elle and tao on the dance floor its was nice to see them happy and i cant waite until you do reaction on the very last scene we all going to need tissuess and i cant waite to see your reaction on how u going to do it what ever way your think its best we are happy matter what
When you said they showed up to prom "avengers style" I remembered a meme I saw on Pinterest where it was them walking into prom it it said "gayvengers assemble!"
I know few people in the fandom have pointed this out, but I’m gonna do it to: in the scene where Nick sees Charlies prom outfit, the light in the globe near Charlie turns on. But when Nicks eyes were closed, the light was off. AKA, Charlie lights up Nicks world 😊
Just popping in real quick to say that the wardrobe department did Harry dirty with their choice of outfit. If his parents are so rich, they never would have let him wear that to prom, and they probably wouldn’t even have let him have it in his closet. I’m sure he’s been trotted by his parents on various formal occasions throughout their active social life, and he would have had several appropriate choices on hand to choose. I’m thinking he snuck out and bought that day suit at a thrift shop, too, but didn’t get caught by his parents like Darcy did. I have more thoughts on other topics to share later, but no time now.
Now I want a Christian/Imogen storyline (that and the flashback of Nick meeting the rugby lads at camp). I thought the "banter" was more awkward than anything, trying to be all masculine but light hearted toward Nick. Not every ally can be as awesome as Imogen Our Lady of Allies.
Honestly I think the Insta reply was probably an oversight. But it is hard to say when she ran out of juice. He's being a dick... and he doesn't have a girl either! Again.
I know you're not a big fan of the show which, for me, is the greatest thing in the history of the world, namely, Young Royals. But I would still love to see you do a reaction to the recently released, first minute and a half of season 3 of YR.
I'm actually a big fan of Young Royals, but it's not something I feel very drawn toward reacting to. And I've found that if I try to force myself to react to something, it ends up being a bad experience for both me and the people watching it. I might consider talking about the third season when it comes out, but it would probably be a general discussion rather than an actual reaction.
Am I correct in discerning that you use “queer” and “trans” to mean separate things? I had always heard the term queer as a blanket term for all the letters in the acronym (including the ones covered by the +), i.e. every identity that wasn’t cishet. As such, it was my understanding that queer included trans under its umbrella. Do you consider them distinct, or am I misunderstanding your usage?
I'm usually thinking of sexuality rather than gender identity when I use the word "queer," but it can definitely also be used in a more all-encompassing way. I'd say that like with many terms like this, it can often have different nuances for different people, but I tend to speak about sexuality and gender identity distinctly since they come with their own separate challenges and situations (and in my life at least, they are very distinct things). I definitely don't object to them being meshed into one category (that's what we do with "LGBTQ+," after all), it just doesn't always work for me since sometimes I want to speak specifically about the trans experience vs. the non-het sexuality experience.
I love this episode so much. It’s one of my favorite episode, but it hurts me at the same time because what both Charlie and Nick are just trying to find a way to support each other and Charlie opening up about the things that he’s been dealing with such as getting bullied, eating disorder and all the stress of Nick coming out has been really stressing him out so my point is there’s some happy moments throughout this episode but also some really hard moments🩷❤️🩹 0:24
The fact that you have a separate video planned for *THAT SCENE* makes me happy. It’s a separate entity unto itself.
Thank you for pointing out that Nick picked up on Tara’s distress about Darcy. I’ve always been impressed by Nick’s level of empathy for someone so young. This emotional intelligence, IMO, is what helped him be so well equipped to deal with the discovery of his sexuality.
I screamed “no” when I realized that there wasn’t another part after this but I’m very excited for part 3❤️😂
I love that Christian saves the situation - and then immediately puts his foot in his mouth! 😂😂

Once again, excellent analysis and commentary on this wonderful show. I hope life is a little less in the way in the coming week!
As someone who was given a buzz cut when I wanted my hair just a bit shorter, I see you.
1:12 ORGANISING COMMITTEE LEVEL: Episode 8
Nick:s suit is green.
Yay! Loved this, thank you!
I like your haircut! Very handsome.
Your hair is sooooooooo awesome
@@thom_is_trans Fair enough.
