The thing that gets me about that final scene is after Charlie tells Nick he used to cut himself, and they hug, Nick literally has like, a fucking death grip on Charlie. Like you can tell he’s so scared of *anything* happening to his boyfriend but the way he still manages to offer comfort and calm in the midst of the chaos that must be going through Charlie’s mind speaks volumes about him as a person. It’s so well done I can’t even.

43:07 I love love love that we don’t get the cliched “pls don’t cut for me” but instead nick says “pls tell me if you feel that bad again” it’s such a small thing but it’s so important to show people how you should react if they do tell you something like this - your love can’t stop someone from harming themselves but you can be a person who is there to listen when times are tough

38:37 Guilt> I think you are right on the money there Thom. I think this is why Charlie is so euphoric after disclosing his behaviour to Nick, because he has shared this secret with someone and in Charlie’s eyes it went well and it he feels like he doesn’t need to hide about this, therefore alleviating at least some of the guilt.

I love that Nick didn’t ask Charlie to promise not to self harm again, he asked him to TELL him if it got bad again. I feel like making him promise not to do it would inevitably lead to guilt/shame/resentment if/when Charlie relapses into that behavior. Nick’s promise is focused on communicating with each other and their relationship, not stopping the behavior, which will be a journey they support each other through.

I was very proud of Charlie when he suggested that they leave the prom, for exactly the reason you state. He faced something that clearly gave him anxiety and he put so much pressure on himself about, and discovered that they could do what was right for them. As Nick points out later in his bedroom, Charlie is so much stronger than he realizes.

I cannot say enough about how great the acting in this episode was, particular from Kit and Joe. The final scene had me in tears the first time I watched, and still does whenever I rewatch it; really, those two can teach a master class in acting. Nick is so gentle, and tender, and loving with Charlie in that last scene, patiently drawing him out. Charlie is struggling to overcome his fear of revealing his deepest secrets with Nick, perhaps not wanting to destroy the illusions he's set up that everything is perfect. What will Nick think of him when Nick finds out about all this? Nick could leave him! Nick's reactions is what's perfect here; getting down on the floor with Charlie, sitting right in front of him, gently taking his hand, looking into Charlie's eyes, paying close attention to Charlie's words but saying nothing until he's sure Charlie is done. Charlie may have been on the verge of tears when he told Nick "I don't want to feel like that any more", but we know it's Charlie's nature to push those feelings down. Charlie doesn't actually cry after he tells Nick that because Charlie is so used to stifling his pain. Nick's tears make up for that, crying for Charlie's pain when he finally finds out how much Charlie is hurting and has been hurting, and what might happen in the worst case scenario. Heck, I'm crying just writing about it, this was such an emotionally raw scene. Will Charlie keep his promise? Alice changed the course of some events when she wrote the script, but we know from the graphic novel that Charlie is poised on the threshold of a downward spiral. Perhaps finally telling someone what's been going on opens up wounds Charlie thought he'd closed.
One thing that's interesting is that in the graphic novel Charlie's eyes are a bright blue, while in the show they appear to be dark. If you look in a few scenes, such as a couple when they're in form and the light is on Charlie's face, you can see that Joe's eyes are actually a dark blue/grey. So I think Nick's statement "I love your eyes" is no lie; Joe's eyes are very beautiful.
The rest of the character arcs made for an excellent season conclusion; Isaac's beginning to learn to love himself just as he is, Darcy coming out with the truth of her home life with her horrific mother, Tao's acceptance of Elle's reaching for new horizons.
Thanks for a really great reaction video Thom. I need to stop now and get a tissue because I'm crying again.

You are the only utuber who recognises what seemed obvious in the scene where Nick turns from the front door with a troubled, frightened look, which Kit portrays so beautifully, coupled the the lyrics “I’m so scared this won’t happen again” that clearly indicates Nick’s fears and concern about his relationship with Charlie. I've heard a lot of different opinions about coming out as it relates to Heartstopper. Some people don't understand why Nick and Charlie are so fixated on it, and some people think that they sort of lose themselves in the self-imposed expectations of how it will go. I like your interpretation of Charlie's statement at prom that "We've been so obsessed with the idea of coming out, it's like we've forgotten why we wanted to do it in the first place." I really like how you track their journey from first stepping through the curtains to realizing they want to leave and why.
The thing I want to emphasize, though, which neither Charlie nor Nick ever really articulates, is that coming out is about controlling the narrative, including what is said, when it is said, and to whom. When anyone who is queer is faced with potential backlash or confusion about revealing that about oneself, one has to be prepared for unpleasantness or frustration. Choosing the manner in which you come out is also about preparing yourself to be ready for whatever reactions you're going to get. By going to prom together, they presented themselves as a couple to a large segment of the school and had the opportunity to observe the reactions and interact with people who came up to them, all while anticipating that things might not go smoothly. It was important to get through that to get to the point where they realized it wasn't that big of a deal because most people didn't care. The reason why they wanted to BE out is so that they could interact freely as a couple in front of everyone and not have everyone be shocked. The reason why they had to COME out was to allow people the opportunity to process the information so that they could get to the point where everyone wasn't shocked. If they hadn't shown up at prom as a couple publicly, the uncertainty about how the school would react would have been delayed until the start of the next term, so that would have been hanging over their heads all summer. What Charlie doesn't acknowledge is that every public appearance they made between when Nick made things Instagram-official and when they ditched prom for Nick's house was work that had to be done to move from the stage of "coming out" to the stage of "being out." Those were times where they were extra vigilant about attention because they understood things might not go smoothly with everyone. Once they saw everyone's reactions, they could drop their guard and let go of the vigilance, which is what happened in that moment after Charlie took Nick's hand on top of the table. I disagree that they forgot why they wanted to do it in the first place - they just were unclear on when they could call it "done" and move on to focusing on themselves.

That kiss between Nick and Charlie on the couch during the party scene is my favorite one of Season 2. I love it because it represents the new standard. It's the culmination of all the growth they've achieved this season. From now on they'll be channeling both intensity and tenderness, and their ongoing intimacy will be tinged depth as well as delight. The kisses that are specific to each scene are great, too, but they're tied to the context. This kiss is indicative of how much deeper their connection is now; they don't just kiss because it's fun - now they kiss because it's essential.

I 100% believe that Tori knows about the self-harm. I don't believe they've talked about it, and I definitely feel like Charlie opening up to Nick is unprecedented. The way Tori is so fiercely protective of Charlie feels to me like she gets how dangerous things can be with him. She's observant without being intrusive, but she for sure knows that the effects of the bullying on Charlie go beyond garden-variety depression and anxiety to being potentially life-threatening.

These lyrics from this song Seven by Taylor Swift is so apt for Darcy and Tara:
"And I've been meaning to tell you
I think your house is haunted
Your dad is always mad and that must be why
And I think you should come live with
Me and we can be pirates
Then you won't have to cry
    Or hide in the closet"

Brilliant final scene … from the moment Nick and Charlie go upstairs to the moment Charlie types out the text and hovers his thumb over the send button. Brilliant analysis by you 👏👏. Phenomenal acting by Kit Connor and Joe Locke. The subtleties and nuances of both actors during the entire final scene are breathtaking. You notice and comment upon every single detail, too. Extraordinary. I agree with you about the song selection for this show and how the lyrics match the emotions of the characters and the storylines so well. It’s obvious everyone involved in the production of this show do their jobs with such loving care. I don’t have enough plaudits to praise this show as well as your reactions to all the episodes. Thank you so much for taking the time to edit and comment (including the next morning commentaries when you felt your previous comments were inadequate). That also reflects a loving care you have towards this show and your work. I’m so glad the show is in production for Season 3. One question before I end…. Knowing the books like you do, and knowing what has been reflected from the books in the first two seasons, do you think there is enough material for a Season 4, or do you think Season 3 will be the end of this remarkable series? Your thoughts? Thanks again for your work and for sharing. 👊👊

I definitely think there's enough material, especially with the additions of show-only characters like Isaac and Imogen + the general fleshing out of characters and topics that were only briefly touched upon in the comics + the storylines explored in the Heartstopper novellas and volume 5 of the comics. I just hope Netflix lets them do it!

    1) When the gang leaves at the end of prom night, and Nick and Charlie say goodbye, that's the first time they have entertained as a couple. I'm not sure Nick realizes this, but Charlie does. 2) When Nick closes the door after Charlie leaves, his face shows that he's not just scared, he knows everything will be different now. 3) I cared for my partner of 40 years right through to the end of his life. I know about burdens. When Charlie tells Nick he doesn't want to be a burden to him I'm yelling at the TV, "Charlie, you idiot! You're thinking like a single person. You're not one any more!"

The "I think I had a crush on the instructor" realisation is interesting, and so true to my experience. It reads to me like this was Nick REALISING this in that moment, because obviously he doesn't go around thinking about a summer camp from when he was 12...
I have a similar 'Oh, THAT'S what that was' feeling in hindsight. I was in a theatre club thing when I was 10-11, and I DEFINITELY had a crush on the guy in our group who was our designated soloist... I was out for YEARS before I remembered that moment with the benefit of hindsight.

SAME. I have had a couple revelations over the years, but the most recent one I had was just in the last month. In third and fourth grade my best friend and I were inseparable. She lived in my neighborhood, and we spent every day together. My parents would host sleepovers every weekend because her parents liked to go out and party and be kid-free. If the plans ever changed and we couldn't spend our daily time together, I would feel bereft and lost. When we moved away, I went into mourning and couldn't make myself eat for a while. I never felt that way about anyone else, not even to this day - not even with any romantic partner I've ever had. She was my first love, and I was completely blind right up until now about what she actually meant to me.

Your analysis of these scenes is perfect! I had such a strong emotional reaction the first time I watched (as in, full on sobbing), it took me some time and some rewatching to appreciate the full context and details. The entire after prom montage, with Seven playing, absolutely tugged at my heartstrings. The feeling of love and support and comfort and safety within this friend group is so hard to find in real life. Having a teen child right now, I’m so sensitive and attuned to the fragility of teen friendships. It breaks my heart! And scenes like this just fill me with so much hope and longing for my kid’s future.

Truly moving ending, that scene between Nick/Kit and Charlie/Joe was incredible, it shows us the maturation, as a couple, of the two protagonists and the growth, as actors, of Kit and Joe. That line that Nick says to Charlie "you don't have to be perfect for me" sums up the whole second season. I can't wait for the third season, a big storm is coming, the fourth volume was the hardest, the most moving. There will be some very funny and adorable scenes and some heartbreaking ones, especially one that Kit and Olivia will have to shoot and I'm sure with their skill they will make it memorable. Furthermore, apparently from the news coming from the filming that has been taking place in recent weeks, we will also have the novella This winter included in the third season! Let's get the tissues ready!

I think Darcy is a good example of "always check on your happy friends" and I'm so glad she finally realized that she's safe with Tara and doesn't "have to" be happy and bubbly all the time in order to be the person Tara wants to date and I wonder what's going to happen now, because she really is on a good way to escape from home like Carys and Aled did in Radio Silence. And as of Imogen, there was also some interesting lightning covering her as she was watching Sahar, similar to Nick "bi awakening", so I wonder if it's what I think it is.
When I first saw the last scene I actually fell ill, it wrecked me to the point I was not able to eat for a couple of days. I've been bullied since elementary school all the way until university and it honestly baffles me how many of my friends have been bullied, too. When did that become a part of "school experience" and when does someone competent finally realize that it's not just child banter, but it can affect someone for life? During my studies I picked up anxiety, chronic illness which developed from stress and caused an ED and severe depression which got me to the point where I just abandoned myself. And I completely understand Charlie when he says he doesn't want to burden Nick with his problems, because he's worried he'd see him as a fragile, broken mess. I have a friend who's probably the best human being I've met in my life and she always tells me to tell her if I'm not feeling good, but I don't want to dump all of my crap on her, but I do wish I was the person she says I am, though.
I can't even imagine how terrified Nick must be as the only person who knows about about all of the effects of bullying on Charlie, but also knowing about Ben's sexual assault, because that's also something nobody knows about and I don't think Charlie would've told him about that anytime soon had he not been present in the situation. I fell like he was still on the verge of tears even when he was standing on the doorstep. I don't think I'll be able to handle Kit in "love can't cure the mental illness scene" next season after seeing this.
Anyway, I'm looking forward for all of the upcoming Heartstopper content (hopefully the Sims will also return at some point) and sorry for dumping all of my crap on you 🙃.

PSA - I think it's important that if someone shares that they have engaged in or are thinking about engaging in self harm, that one doesn't react shocked and aghast. It takes a lot of courage to open up to someone about that sort of thing, and many people have kept their history shrouded in shame, so it's important to provide a shame-free space for them to share their experiences. I have seen so many RUclipsrs react to Charlie's admission with a sharp intake of breath or covering the face or cursing. That kind of reaction is off-putting and makes it scarier to open up to someone if you think the revelation is going to elicit that kind of response. In my opinion, the best kind of response is steady eye contact, steady touch, and steady breathing to accompany a "Thank you for sharing that with me - I am so grateful you opened up to me. I know the situation is really hard, and I'm here for you in whatever way I can help." Obviously, try to connect them with professional counseling, if warranted. Just don't act like the concept of self harm is so awful that you are having trouble processing it, because then those people feel like you're having trouble understanding and accepting them.

Happy Thanksgiving, Thom. I am thankful for your insights and analysis of the show. You see things that I may have felt, but did not notice or understand why the show impacts me so well for all the right reasons. I took this show and Charlie for me to realize that I felt shame about having been a kid that was bullied and assaulted for much of my grade school and high school years. I never cut myself, but I tried to kill myself several times in my early teens. It has taken me 40+ years to realize I felt shame. It took Hearstopper for me to see someone who was a lot like me to help me see myself better. I am so grateful for you. I look forward to your upcoming Heartstopper content and will be joining your Patreon.

I really appreciate your in depth analysis of this last episode. I've watched that last scene dozens of times and it makes me bawl every single time. We could talk about the nuances in every word and gesture for hours. Thank you for being so vulnerable and giving a personal facet to the mental health storyline. I think a lot of people can relate to Charlie, to some degree or other. And also to Nick, having people you care about suffer is so hard.
Speaking of song lyrics matching the show, in the very first scent of Ep1, the lyrics are "I don't really care if it nearly kills me, I'd give you the world if you asked me to, I could break a glass just to watch it shatter, I'd do anything just to feel with you" as Charlie is happily walking into the school to meet Nick. It's so in line with Charlie putting everyone before himself and putting on a happy face, regardless of how much it costs him. It would be a cool video to analyze more of these song lyric/show moment parallels.

    • @elisabethbauman6190

There were a few moments in Joe's portrayal where he just disappeared and wasn't even playing Charlie - he just WAS a person trying to open up about trauma. The eye movements, absolutely, but also the titling of the head and neck. Also the reluctant response to someone taking the hand that had been wrapped around his knee in the protective fetal pose and opening up a side of his body as an attempt overcome his defensiveness. Also the changes in vocal pitch and volume as he alternates between saying each brave thing and then retreating/deflecting to the familiar thing (sorry/I don't want to annoy you). Importantly, the way he starts the sentence where he admits the thing he's been too scared to share and then hesitates, and then has to restart the sentence from the very beginning to build up the momentum to get the whole thing out. "I used to..." with the important pause, and then not being able to resume the sentence with the word that carries the most shame, and so having to begin again. That was some impeccable acting right there; it felt like it was ripped right from my own memory to be made manifest in the scene before me.

It is crazy how sometimes we miss the things infront of our eyes like Issac never really considering the Ace book, and we def want James to thrive lol I do hope we get more of James and Issac being friends next season. MAN I can't wait for more Ajayi and Farouk next season cause it's so nice to see Farouk's journey to being more accepting of opening himself up and just them being cute. Still think they're such an important storyline that sometimes you do find that Heartstopper moment even later in life. As for Imogen I also find it pretty telling that when she finally decides to give up on guys and work on herself is when she reconnects with Sahar and starts to fall for her. I do like your interpretation of her possible thought processes and journey. As horrible as I felt for Darcy seeing how her mother treats her, for some reason it angered me more seeing how she treated Tara. Like her instant reaction to a stranger, who looks amazing, is that she's soliciting. And then just blames Darcy infront of Tara and shows how disinterested she is in this conversation. I feel like it shows more how horrible she is to Darcy when she is this uncouth to a girl she barely knows.
ALRIGHT THE ESSAY ON *THE SCENE*. (Joe needs an award on his body language for the scene alone) I Love how Nick gets onto Charlie's level and grounds him by holding his hand and trying to comfort him. I have been in Charlie's position a lot in different aspects. You do get very used to people accepting you at your word of "Yeah I'm fine." and even in moments where it's true no one digs further to learn why it's fine. The one time one of my sisters continued to ask me about my life outside of "How are you? I'm fine" it did short circuit my brain for a moment. Now for one, big hugs on talking about your struggles

That final scene is so beautifully done, another instance where Alice really improved upon the already great source material. I noticed that Charlie said "no" instead of "hardly ever" too, but sadly I think it's probably just Charlie not being completely honest, not indication that he's in a better place than he was in the comic. Comic!Charlie in volume 3 generally is a lot more forthcoming with Nick than TV!Charlie is in S2 of the show. This conversation happens much earlier in the comic, and it doesn't take much for Charlie to open up of his own volition. Charlie also expresses multiple times in vol 3 that he's nervous about Nick coming out because he's nervous about the attention it will bring to himself (not just Nick). In the show I don't think he admits this to Nick even once. On the show Charlie already seems more deeply affected by the hard stuff happening around him (like in S1, where the cinema fight leaves him much more shaken up than he is in the comic), which on top of him being more closed off than comic!Charlie really sets the stage for what we know is coming in S3. 😬
I love that both S1 and S2 end with a close-up on Charlie's happy face. His joy and relief at realizing he and Nick love each other, and at being accepted and supported by Nick when he confided in him, is beautiful, but imo the contrast between his and Nick's reactions also speaks to how "normal" Charlie's trauma feels to him, he probably has no clue Nick is so scared because to him this is just his life. He doesn't totally understand how awful and dangerous his SH and ED are, and how devastating these revelations would be to Nick, because he's been suffering alone in silence for so long.

I definitely agree with you about Charlie’s mental state in the show versus the books. I think that Alice wrote it that way because it is going to be more straightforward to show Charlie’s continuing mental health struggles in Season 3. Although it is realistic for someone to regress significantly after a traumatic event has ended and be thrown into a spiral in the absence of obvious triggers, it will be easier for people who haven’t experienced that to follow the progression of his mental health state and understand cause and effect in a more linear depiction. Season 1 and Season 2 have exposed Charlie to a lot more upset, particularly with making Ben and Harry recurring characters that Charlie can’t escape from. Also, in the absence of the widespread support and acceptance at school that Charlie experienced in the comics after a bunch of sixth-formers stopped the bullying, Charlie’s self esteem has had no buoy other than Nick’s affection. I can definitely see why he’s more closed off and much less advanced in his healing journey.
That being said, I don’t actually think Charlie was deliberately lying here when he claimed that he no longer self-harmed. I think he was simply thinking about the current state of his life and going back to when that began and evaluating that specific period. I genuinely believe that he hasn’t self-harmed since he and Nick became boyfriends, and since that is the current state of his existence, his new normal, I think that’s where he started counting from. However, I agree that he’s much more closed off and cagey in the show and is prone to lie without hesitation, so when things get bad again, I do foresee an impending struggle with being open and truthful to Nick about when the urges resume.
I am very much looking forward to the comics versus show analysis pointing out all the ways in which TV’s Nick and Charlie differ from the source material. I am particularly looking forward to the exploration of why those changes were made and the implications for how viewers connect with the story.

    Hi Thom,
Great job on the video! I just realized that Darcy's fear was Nick's fear in the first season
I love how you put your thoughts that you didn't say later in the video and in the middle of the video. I love how Nick comes closer to Charlie and his uses his comforting presence to get Charlie to speak about it even though he knows that Nick doesn't know about what happened before they met. I love Joe and Kits dedication to the scene where Charlie is talking about the bullying that he has experienced in the past and his self harm that he has also experienced in the past. Charlie is also not used to people caring about him because Ben never asked about it... His parents never asked about it.. Tori was the only that knew about the bullying and self harm before Nick came into the picture. The bedroom scene where they speak broke my heart in the series and the comics. I also think that he is staring into his eyes as he trying to see if Charlie is lying to him.
I love how they add scenes that were not in the comics
I love how Nick is always carrying him
I like how Nick is always can tell Charlies feelings through his facial expressions

I hope next season we will get a episode where the friend group investigates on Darcy’s mom & household. Because kicking your own daughter out just because of a argument over a outfit doesn’t mean you have to force her to get out especially when it’s out at night, but making your own daughter sleep outside is very neglectful.
When Darcy was looking at a mother comforting a child at the park was very emotional because the mother was trying to make the child feel better where Darcy’s mom is the one who hurts her & makes her feel bad about herself and DIDN’T EVEN CARE THAT HER OWN DAUGHTER WAS GONE.
When Tara was talking to Darcy’s mom, when Tara asks if Darcy was okay the quote Darcy’s mother replied with “And how would I know that?” (Because she’s your DAUGHTER & YOU SHOULD LOVE & CARE FOR HER). And the fact when Darcy’s mom mentions that kicking Darcy out wasn’t the first time. The audacity of this woman, she shouldn’t be a mom at all if she’s going to treat Darcy this way.
At least with Charlie’s mom, even though Charlie’s mom may be a bit strict, she does want to make sure Charlie stays on track without getting distracted by Nick, Charlie’s mom DID CARE about her son in school despite her attitude, at least we NEVER see Charlie’s mom KICKED HIM OUT LIKE HOW DARCY’S MOM DID.
I feel really bad because we only see Darcy happy WHENEVER SHE’S WITH HER FRIENDS, BUT NEVER AT HER HOME. It was because of Darcy’s mom that it made Darcy think she wasn’t capable enough to be loved that why she freaked out when Tara said ‘I love you’, do you think Darcy’s mom ever tells Darcy that she loves her? Because from what I have seen is that her mom doesn’t since she didn’t care when Darcy left.
I would either want Mr Ajayi & Mr Farouk to adopt her or Darcy can stay at one of her friends house. Anything that could get Darcy out of her toxic neglectful household.

He is just beginning to realize the depth of Charlie's trauma and wondering (as my limited knowledge of the books shows) whether he is up to the challenge that loving Charlie will require of him. I like the role that Tara has taken in trying to draw Isaac out. He's a bookworm for sure, but in social situations he uses books like armor. He has something in which to immerse himself wherever he goes and whomever he's with. It's so essential that aroace people get to build meaningful platonic relationships as the foundation of their social support, and Isaac needs someone to draw him out of his shell to help him do that. In the hotel when they were all exploring, at the sleepover when they were dancing, and again at the after-prom where they were dancing, Tara kept trying to get Isaac to disengage from a book so he could connect with the people. It was thoughtful of her, and Isaac needs someone who is willing to make the effort to coax him out of his comfort zone over and over.

Does anyone notice when Elle was looking at Tao smitten there was butterflies due to the fact Elle and Tao both have butterflies whenever they are with each other. (HEAT episode)
But if you pay close attention to the animation butterflies, you would see the butterflies fly where Imogen and Sahar are next.
They are so many clues & hints that Imogen & Sahar might get together next season, not only with the butterflies but with them cuddling when Imogen was sleeping next to Sahar while having her arm wrapped around her shows that Imogen & Sahar are both comfortable sharing a bed together. And don’t forget about how when Sahar and Imogen was talking at Elle’s new art school exhibition with Tara & Darcy about the “token ally” thing,Imogen looked intrigued when Sahar said she’s bisexual (Meaning she’s attracted to both boys & girls) and Imogen followed after her and how Tara says “Interesting” after that, but when Sahar & Imogen were talking there was a silhouette that looks like Tara & Darcy had their first kiss at Harry’s party at the back right in between Sahar & Imogen.
But most importantly, the way Imogen looked at Sahar at prom (LOVED both of Imogen & Sahar’s dress during that scene) when Sahar was playing the guitar, looked like Imogen is getting attracted and starting to like a girl this time.
I’m not even joking,I feel like Imogen is only getting attracted to bisexual people at this point. But I also feel bad since Imogen hasn’t really been getting lucky with her love life since she lost Nick due to Nick already being in a relationship with Charlie and she was able to date Ben but Ben was still in love with Charlie to the point he mistreated her & just wanted a girlfriend. Lost both boys to Charlie in each season, but hey at least we know Charlie is a really good catch since not only did Nick & Ben like him but James used to as well. Charlie is very cute & any guy would be lucky to go out with him which makes Nick the luckiest.
But at this point, let’s hope Sahar & Imogen first forms a friendship first & have a bond with each other then they are able to get together after. Since I still want Imogen to focus on herself before she’s ready for another relationship due to the fact she just broke up with Ben.
During the Truth or Dare scene, both Imogen & Sahar said that the other stopped texting one another. But could have been that they knew they were something there during their friendship that they were both scared to the point they both stopped texting each other? If you want more scenes of Imogen & Sahar, what kind of scenes do you want to see them in?

One thing that I completely missed was Charlie's little laugh just after he typed 'i love you'. I think you were exactly right in your interpretation. The only change I would have made to the end of this episode if I was directing would be to have added a reaction shot after Charlie said he used to cut himself. A shot of Nick breathing in with shock and emotional eyes would have made it even more clear how he felt. Great job as always Thom! Thanks for all the hard work.

I almost feel like Nick is purposely not reacting strongly in that moment because he doesn't want Charlie to know how deeply it's affected him. If Charlie realized how much the revelation of his history of self-harm had hurt Nick, I feel like he would've closed up again immediately and vowed to never tell Nick things like this again, which is definitely not what Nick wants or what Charlie needs. I think Kit does an amazing job of showing Nick's restraint here - we can tell that he's deeply affected by what Charlie's telling him, but he's trying not to be too overt because he doesn't want to scare Charlie off. (Just my view on that moment, in any case!)

There was a sign of Charlie's self abusing in the Louvre, when Nick asks him about his eating after he fainted, Charlie start pinching his arm almost like he is thinking of cutting himself then, but Nick takes his hand and distracts him. The acting in this season, especially that last scene is off the charts for such you actors, the why Joe can control his eyes and his body in such a precise was is impressive and as for Kit, the look of pure sadness, devastation, and fear on his face and in his watery eyes and as for the kiss on the forehead one of the most love filled emotional kisses in any form of art be it movies or TV or stage. My admiration for all these young actors is so high. Couple that with the stunning cinematography, soundtrack and attention to detail achieved by Euros and Alice quite frankly staggering. I hope they keep the I love you scene from the book as it is such a great moment in the comics. I think that both of them love each other so much that they have been afraid to say it just in case the other one doesn't feel quite the same way, maybe Nick's insecurity comes from Charlie being admired by Ben and James and Charlie genuinely not understanding how someone like Nick can find him attractive let alone fall in love with this fragile broken mess as he calls himself. The I love you would have come much earlier if they had just gone on their feelings (probably the snow day for Nick lol). I think the last scence confirmed to each other that the other one was indeed in love with them, so it will now be safe to say it out loud. I love Nicks insecurity over how much Charlie likes him right back to when he said he met Ben at Harry's party, you could see the fear on Nick's face when Charlie said he'd met Ben and the relief when he was told Charlie pushed him in the wall, it wasn't they he was relieved that Charlie had stood up to Ben it was relief that he was no longer interested in Ben and this follows through in Paris when Ben told Nick he wanted Charlie back again the look of concern on Nicks face is evident and when he brings it up in the Louvre you can hear the trepidation in Nicks voice when he tells Charlie Ben thinks he has a chance of getting back with him and the relief is palpable when Charlie respond he doesn't with his characteristic sweet little chuckle.

    1. when Nick is whisper talking holding back tears and Charlie seems too numb to cry himself - but when he sees that Nick is upset he says sorry. It's like seeing Nick cry gives validation to what he has been feeling and experiencing. Nick is carrying some of the weight with him now, too.
    2. the final door kiss and Nick's fear along with Olivia's lyrics when he closes the door.
    3. Olivia's final line of Don't leave me - a call forward to the novella Nick and Charlie - also a feeling I had as the credits rolled of "Heartstopper, don't leave me"!

Hi! I'm late to the party, but here's my comment anyway! 🙂
Imogen: I NEED a storyline where Nick helps her discover and accept herself in S3. He would be the perfect person to guide her through that journey.
Imogen is exhibiting textbook comphet, which is reflected in the boys she's been interested in and her relationship with them. Like you said, they've known each other for so long, so it's only logical that they should date, right? You didn't mention this in the video, but I remember you talking about it in a livestream: when she is sharing that moment with Sahar at prom, she is illuminated with the colours of the lesbian flag (pink and orange). I'm not sure it's actually hinting at her being a lesbian, but we know lighting is super meaningful in Heartstopper. I can't wait to see what is in store for her in S3. 🥰 I just hope she thrives.
It's intriguing too see the resemblance between Heartstopper's Imogen and Becky Albertalli's book Imogen, Obviously, even though they are completely unrelated. 🤔
Taylor Swift (sorry, it has to be done): Before season 2 came out, a lot of people (including myself) hoped that a Taylor Swift song would be featured on the soundtrack. But I was honestly convinced there was no way it would ever happen, even when the speculation/rumours increased as we got closer to the release. So when seven started playing after Tara and Darcy's talk, I was completely shocked to say the least. I had to pause for like 5 minutes to compose myself haha. Funnily enough, August 3rd is also the day Taylor announced the Toronto Eras Tour dates, so that was an emotional day for me, haha! (I didn't get tickets though rip).
Seven is a very special song to me. It can definitely be read as having queer themes, and it's just incredibly beautiful. Plus, it's considered a Tara/Darcy song by many fans AND by Patrick Walters. So to have it play while they say they love each other over and over is so special. The after prom party montage afterwards is my #1 favourite scene of all time. It's abolutely beautiful, hopeful and nostalgic at the same time. The lyrics "or hide in the closet" play while the camera focuses on Isaac, and then on Nick and Charlie. When they all hug goodbye at the end, we hear "passed down like folk songs, our love lasts so long". It's as if through the story of Heartstopper and it being shared around the world, their love last forever. The mere thought of the song/scene still makes me tear up. 🥲
The final scene: Your analysis of this scene was spot on and very thorough. Thank you so much for sharing your struggles with us. This is why Heartstopper resonated with so many, it's just so relatable. Everyone agrees that Kit and Joe's performances in that scene are incredible. They both deserve all of the awards for it. Not to mention the writing. Nick's whispered "Char, can you just please..." is so heartbreaking. AAAH!
Ur So Pretty: The lyrics "I'm so scared that the moments we shared won't happen again. I don't want this to end" juxtaposed with Nick's worried look literally broke me. Yet another song that makes me cry every time. I just have to skip it whenever I listen to the soundtrack. At the end of the first episode, Charlie is the one worried about the future, while Nick is blissfully walking home after having come out to Imogen and kissed his boyfriend in public. At the end of the last episode, it's Nick's turn to be worried about Charlie, while Charlie is relieved and elated at the realisation that they're in love. The parallel is super interesting to me. And both those scenes, with their respective music, are so haunting.
Thank you so much for taking us on this journey through the ins and outs of season 2. I'm not sure why, but it feels kind of emotional this time to be done with a season. Again, your analysis is always very insightful and interesting. 😊 Now it's time to mentally prepare for season 3. 🥹

The song that Baby Queen sings at prom is a cover by The Cure, which is a huge British rock band. The song is called "Just Like Heaven", released 1987 and is one of their more popular singles.
I know that HS is meant to be about queer joy but I appreciate how it shows Darcy's family struggles and not just as a homophobia issue, but as an overall toxic family dynamic. Parents like Darcy's absolutely exist and the writing and acting gets it down to a T. But I felt a bit less connected to Darcy's talk with Tara afterwards, like Tara was sort of not getting the entirety of how much it impacts Darcy. She said something like "I love you even though you are a mess" but the tone of it just feels off for the scene and like it is downplaying Darcy's daily reality. Just my feeling though.
I love how their prom ends up being at Nick's house and just playing silly games and hanging out. Those are where we make the real memories, not at large, fancy events.

@@butterflypooo Yes. Given that the scene between these two is followed by THE scene between Nick and Charlie that has garnered so much praise, the contrast is heightened about how Tara reacts to Darcy’s revelation and how Nick reacts to Charlie’s revelation. Nick is exceptionally intuitive and mature in his reaction, so that sets the bar. The scene between Tara and Darcy is really important from a story perspective. We see character growth and a shift in the relationship dynamic. It also leads into a beautiful section of the episode set to Seven. It’s my assumption that people who have a qualm about the way Tara reacted didn’t want to articulate that and risk criticizing the entire scene for those who enjoyed it. For some, it’s very moving. However, just because people are hesitant to point out a scene where they feel something misses the mark doesn’t mean they aren’t relieved to find out other people feel the same way. There are a number of places in Season 2 where I thought things could have been done better, and this happens to be one of them. I am gratified you put my thoughts into words, and I admire the way you did it without writing off the whole scene. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

@@elisabethbauman6190 I agree with you that there are a few things in season 2 that I wish were done better. I haven't seen season 1 since season 2 was released, so I can't compare them but I wonder if S1 was done better over all and if they rushed S2 a bit bc of the huge response from the fans. But yeah, I haven't been able to compare the seasons so idk.
      Thanks for the chat! :)
