as an animator who sometimes struggles to get into a groove, these workflow methods were insanely helpful. Had no idea you could even animate your reference footage by keying frame offset. Thanks so much jason!
you probably dont care at all but does anyone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid lost the login password. I would love any assistance you can give me
Really awesome tips, thank you so much Jason :) I really love the idea of using the bouncing ball then drawing over it with grease pencil.... that definitely looks like a time saver! I'll definitely be doing this one myself when roughing out animations.... aweso9me stuff :)
I love this! I edit my reference video for timing a lot myself but I always do it in After Effects. It’s a great idea to just do it in the image plane! Saves a step and let’s you tweak timing on the fly if necessary. Love the bouncing ball idea too!
Hi there, yes you can see how to do that in my gumroad tutorials - gumroad.com/jasonshum Just make sure to read my bio on the page for a free code. The combat one will have the workflow you're looking for!
Thanks for the video. Very helpful :) I have a question about the fall on 7:40. How did you do it with out interfering the ground ? Escpecially at the settling down of legs. Is it a script or all manual ?
Hey Niraj, thanks! The player I'm using is Keyframe Pro - zurbrigg.com/keyframe-pro. It's $79 but they have a free version as well. It always keeps frame rate steady and has drawover tools. There's a more basic one called Keyframe MP which is great too - zurbrigg.com/keyframe-mp.
Hi! Can I ask how do you work when exporting these in to engine? are animation made this way just for pratice? i thought they all had to be on the spot? or if a combo it make to cycle do you cut them up after you get the full idea of energy and style? I'm an ok student animator looking in to game anim for a solo project so just trying to understand this process
Hi Tammy, I replied in DM but posting it here as well if anyone else was interested: I tend to animate combos differently for demo reels. I don’t care about staying at origin or anything like that, I just make it cool. If I was doing it for games I would be focused on how many units it needs to move and shaving frames off the antic and settles. So yeah I treat them differently since demo reel is all about presentation. Hope that helps!
Hi Jason, thanks for posting this! I'm an animator and I'm always looking to get better and this was great. I'm also going to check out your tutorials. I just have a quick question. For the image planes, how do you simultaneously record front and side video? Thanks in advance!
Hi Nick, thanks for the feedback! For the image planes, I record myself from front and side view. I end up syncing them in premiere or quicktime pro just by eyeballing it to match up. It's pretty manual, sometimes tedious process but I do it because it really helps me in seeing both views. In my tutorials, I walk through how I sync them up using quicktime pro.
You animated that ball in less than 10 minutes?! It looks so cool, and already has so much life to it! I've been trying to come up with a little animation project to do for this week but have no idea where to start, thinking I might try something along these lines. how long did the whole process take you from start to finish? Thanks Jason! Nom
Hi Naomi, that's the great thing about blocking it out with a ball first is that it's so quick to know if you if you have the right energy in it. I think the whole thing took about 7-8 hours or so. I have the whole process recorded in a tutorial on gumroad if you're ever interested - gumroad.com/l/APfLt. Thanks!
Hey Jason! So glad I came across your RUclips channel. I'm an aspiring animator with the goal of becoming an animator for Riot games. It would be awesome if you could make a video explaining how you got the opportunity to work there and what Riot typically look for, for example how much professional experience you need. I'm a university student at the moment and really interested in investing into your bundle on gumroad. I have a special request, would it be possible to get private mentoring from you (an hour session every 2 weeks or something) to help develop my animation ability to the kind of level Riot look for in an employee? I feel it will be extremely beneficial for me to be assigned exercises from you, whether being walk cycles or some other sort of animation so please consider it if possible. Many thanks dude. Followed on RUclips and twitter. All the best. James.
Hi James, thanks for the feedback! I'd be happy to put together a video of how I got the opportunity, I have a few animators lined up for the next streams but that's a good idea. As for private mentoring, I'll private message you with some options for that. I'd be happy to help, I don't speak for Riot in terms of what needs to be done to get noticed but I can offer advice/feedback to help you on your path!
My idea is very simple it a 2d flat square shape getting ready to jump on a 2d flat platform But i will be thinking in 3d space even though my chatarters is 2DI have maya 2017 student version need help
The traversal/jumps tutorial will help but it really depends on how well you know maya. If you are just starting out I'd recommend some more beginner tutorials so you can practice the fundamentals.
Hi Brian, The classes are different price based on which bundle you buy. But a stand alone class is $75. I'd recommend the combo pack where you get all the tutorials and a class for $90. Let me know if you have more questions!

Hi there, yes you can see how to do that in my gumroad tutorials - gumroad.com/jasonshum
Just make sure to read my bio on the page for a free code. The combat one will have the workflow you're looking for!

Thanks for the video. Very helpful :)
I have a question about the fall on 7:40. How did you do it with out interfering the ground ? Escpecially at the settling down of legs. Is it a script or all manual ?
Hey there, that's just going through frame by frame to make sure the contact is feeling good on the ground. I wish there was a script for that! :)
then it s very beautifully done :)
Hey Jason, great tutorial! Curious about the player you had up...what are you using?

Dude...I have no idea how I've gone this long without this. Amazing.
