  • Logan is out! The Wolverine is technically a sequel to The Last Stand, and a setup for Days of Future Past, but it's also the 2nd film in the Wolverine Trilogy and that trilogy is complete as of today! Here's everything right with The Wolverine.

    I like to imagine that when Logan retracts his claws while they are bloody, the foreign blood is destroyed by his healing factor as it would be cross contaminating by mixing blood types, meaning he'd feel the sensation of it dissolving and bubbling (?). Sort of like using ear drops to get rid of earwax bubbling and clicking, he'd sort of feel it in a oddly soothing way I think. Like picking off dead skin, or scratching an itch, it hurts, but not to the extent where it isn't enjoyed to a limited extent.
    Idk I'm really tired right now.

    You forget to mention how the filmmakers basically used EVERY Japanese thing you can think of in this movie. I mean come on, the movie features samurais, ninjas, a bullet train, traditional Japanese clothing, cultural believes like the bad omens, the devastating atomic bombing, Japanese food, Japanese hotels, some politics, Japanese funerals, seppuku and many more Japanese themes. To me this is an astounding win.

    Small detail for 9:50; there are multiple ways of saying goodbye in Japanese, which carry slightly different implications, tones or meanings. "Sayonara" is a very final version of goodbye, you use it when you aren't sure if you'll ever see a person again, or if you're quite certain you wont. So while the one-liner might just sound like 'You asked me to say goodbye. Well, goodbye', it actually goes a little deeper, because the goodbye Wolverine is giving him is far more final than the one he asked for.

    The original trilogy indicates that Logan's memories aren't completely gone, even after the shots through the head in Origins. He actively remembers several things from before losing them during the trilogy, and he seems to genuinely remember Yashida by the end of this movie. My best explanation is that his memories weren't completely wiped out by the bullets, and over time, and with Charles and Jean's help, he's regained most if not all of his memories. Dream Jean's line of "everyone you love dies" seems to be referring to Kayla in Origins as well as herself.

      Spoilers ahead:
      tbh i dont get how x24 died, in x men origins when wolverine was shot in the head with an adamantium bullet (twice mind you) he merely lost his memory. But in logan, when x24 was shot by laura with the same adamantium bullet his head is apparently blown off...
      Also since wolverine's skull is made of adamantium (which is indestructible) shouldnt it bounce off or become lodged in his forehead?

      SPOILER ALERT: I think origins is still relevant to this story. DOFP is probably isolated. the x-24 needed that green stuff to heal from that shotgun wound to the head meaning his healing isn't as strong as Wolverines is in his prime. No medicine means that chunk of head is never growing back.

    Thanks for making this. The Wolverine is a very good movie. The third act prevents it from being great, but Mangold gets plenty of stuff right and I don't blame him for the third act (I blame Fox).
    Also, prepare for Logan my friend. You've seen nothing yet. Not only is it the perfect Wolverine movie, it's a fantastic film overall. Jackman gives the performance of his career

    • @trentosborne3326
      @trentosborne3326 7 лет назад +24

      Alex Love Gonna be frank I don't agree the third act never mattered to me because it still fit the movie, Yashida being the villain fits thematically and adds to the story. It plays into Mariko's story and her fiance's (can't remember his name) Yashida is a great contrast to Logan as this video showed. The mech suit makes sense Yashida can't battle Logan physically and he needs a means to transfer his healing factor to him. What exactly would the alternative ending be that ties into the ideas of immortality and creates the situation for Logan to have a chance to die but refuse.
      Fans don't think of this they never consider if something actually fits the story, so if they never consider this than how exactly do they know if a story is well written if they never take into consideration why any of the choices were made on a story level?

    I always figured not all of Logan's memories were erased, some being suppressed, since Jean was able see memories of his Weapon X experiments in X1. So I figured Logan was given back most of his memories by Charles in between X2 and Last Stand. Logan even says in DOFP that he's been in a lot of wars.

    Amazingly enough the prediction the girl said she had about how Logan would die did technically come true in the end, she said that he would die holding his heart in his hands. In Logan he literally died holding the hand of the only thing he loved at the time. The last thing he would ever love. His daughter. So he died holding his heart, which is so wholesome yet saddening that thinking about it makes me cry a little.

    Fun fact: The final battle between Logan and Shingen was originally going to be done by having the actors perform the choreography without weapons and adding the swords and claws in post. But Hugh Jackman just looked at Hiroyuki Sanada and said: "Hey, are you okay with this?" to which he replied "No, I think we can do it with a real sword." So they did.

    I was waiting for you to save this until Logan. Personally I loved this movie for a bunch of reasons. But The biggest would have to be because this showed that Wolverine isn't just a badass mutant with claws. He's a soldier, a animal, a lost soul, a ronin, a beserker, a weapon, but under all that he's just a man. I really liked Mariko in the film too, though I am sad that her time with Logan was erased from the timeline. But at least Logan still has her memory.
    Also the costume at the end? We all need that.

    Some people complain about how Logan was able to fight after being shot without healing powers. My explanation is that the thing that slows you down most when you're injured is the pain, something Logan DOES feel (stated in the first X-Men movie). I think over time he trained himself to ignore the pain and keep fighting, trusting that he would heal. He is so used to it that he doesn't change that behavior when his healing powers are suppressed.

    This film looked amazing.The cinematography was absolutely beautiful and it was a really solid film. I do think that it was too long though and the pacing drags somewhere towards the end of the second act. Wolverine losing his healing ability seemed pointless too. as the movie would have worked just as well if he was just normal becasue it only slowed him down a tiny bit. Also, I'm tired of directors gong down the Superman II route of power loss as a way to drive the characters. So yeah, if the film had been edited down to be tighter and the healing loss crap taken out then this would have been a classic. As it is it's just a really, really good film.

    6:04 It's not... QUITE a bad omen. Chopsticks stuck into food resembles incense sticks, as burned at a shrine as an offering to deceased spirits. Doing so with food presents the food as an offering as well, which isn't great, because you then eat it, consuming food you've offered to spirits. It'd be like bringing a bowl of chocolates to your boss, then eating them in front of him.

    I haven't seen Logan yet but this is my favorite x men film. I love that it barely has any mutants in it. My only real complaint is Viper. She feels out of place in a mostly mutant free film set in Japan. The Silver Samurai thing that everyone complains about doesn't bother me at all.

    Um, Mr Cinema Wins guy, Logan's wiped memories from Origins returned to him.
    He remembered Stryker's Weapon X operation in X2 (proving that being shot with an adamantium bullet didn't get rid of all the memories and that he was able to remember them)
    In "The Wolverine", he remembers Kayla (her name)
    In a promotional behind-the-scenes image for "Logan", an ID is shown with the name "James Howlett" (his birth name as shown in Origins). So I guess if Logan can remember childhood memories as well as Weapon X stuff back in X2 (2003), I think it might be safe to say that by "The Wolverine" (2013) he got most if not all of his old memories back?

    • @Duskof81
      @Duskof81 7 лет назад +15

      In The Wolverine, he remembering Keyla's name was probably a dormant memory, like his memory of the atomic explosion. At least by the time of Days of a Future Past he has all his memories back, because Charles saw all of his memories, and he could see the Weapon-X experiment

    • @loganbigmo

    Unlike the post credit scenes in the MCU. I freaking LOVE the post credit scene in The Wolverine. Even still, they should've surprised everyone with Professor X and Magneto setting up Days of Future Past at the very end of the credits. In the middle of the credits, they should've added the scene where he opens the suitcase containing his classic suit.... OMG, that would've made this movie so awesome for everyone.

    I'm sad that you didn't win the love hotel scene. That was hilarious. Wolverine being totally unaware that they walked into a love hotel was great, and then the woman telling them the "rooms" available I just found really great. Also, I accidentally didn't see this movie, went to see Logan, and decided to just now watch The Wolverine and I have to say both are somewhat predictable, but quite enjoyable.
    Also question to anyone who saw it in theatres, were there subtitles for the Japanese. Since I watched it online, there weren't any at all, although I understood the gist of the Japanese dialogue..

    Watched this last night with my dad, who was the person who introduced me to comics, superhero films, etc. Both he and I really enjoyed it. Upon researching what film comes next in the timeline, I have learned that DOFP is next and it essentially makes this film the end of it's timeline, which likely means that we wont get a film with this Logan/Wolverine going on adventures with Yukio. Also there's the whole factor of Hugh Jackman retiring his Wolverine. Regardless, I'm happy to have seen this film and sort of look forward to seeing what the rest of the series has in store (especially Logan).
