- Thor was a totally competent movie that surprised a lot of people for fitting in the MCU so well. But people don't often talk about it too fondly. Maybe it was better than you remember?

You predicted the damn future.
Neil Hood, ill give Thanos a very slight edge but not much. Other than Thanos, Loki is the best villain and it’s not even close
Yup Loki and Thanos are the best
@@turdferguson8227 Hela? Ultron? Killmonger?
@@AlanJia8 all good, just not *as* good.
@@MeTaLISaWeSoMe95 Hela is definitely better as a villain, you could argue loki is a better character on general.

When Loki asks "Is it madness? IS IT?" I feel like he's thinking "because I can't tell anymore," and it makes me so sad because he can't tell if he's following his destiny and that justifies his actions, or if he's just getting vengeance and that is unacceptable on a cosmic scale but either way he loses the belief that his life was what he thought it was, and since he's so shaken by that sudden identity crises "who should I be loyal to? did my family(Asgardian and Frost Giants) ever really love me? is it in my blood to be evil?" that he truly cannot tell if he's gone mad because he feels such a separation from himself. Ugh, heartbreak.
And then recall in The Dark World when Thor is like "Loki, are you mad???" and Loki be like "Possibly!"
I wonder if Loki's still unsure about himself even in Thor Ragnarok...
Very true!!! Great observation! I recognize that Loki is a villain, or at the very least an antihero, but I still love him despite his flaws.
loki doesnt know if he is sane because he isnt.... its that simple, loki is the god mischief, his entire reason for existing is to cause issues, and kick start Ragnarok.
Just reading this made me tear up...
I feel like it's also him making a jab at Thor, whom we saw declare, "I'll hunt the monsters down and slay them all!" Loki's basically saying, "what? Isn't this what you wanted? Oh, it's only madness when I do it. I see now."
Odin the god of bad parenting
Little known fact, but during the production of this movie, the team started calling him "The Fred Sanford of the Marvel Universe"
Marvel Agent11 if you want that, the Greek gods are worse in many ways, mainly Zeus...
Odin isn't exactly father of the year, but he gets a much worse rap than he deserves. His main problem seems to be that he's king first, father a distant second. That and his excessive pride for *both* his sons blinding him to what they were becoming.
Odin is a good father, his son was an arrogant ass
If your son is an arrogant ass, then you screwed up as a parent.
1:19 I thought the whole "Both of you were born to be kings" thing was a reference to the fact that Loki is technically Frost Giant royalty.
Can we add a 'fun hint at Norse Myth' win with the "run home little princess" line?
For context: Thor and Loki disguised themselves as women to take back Mjolnir from a giant who stole it.
So a frost giant was worthy?
Paquette Stephen Brett If I remember correctly, in the original Norse myth, the hammer was just so ridiculously powerful that it would destroy whoever wasn’t powerful enough to hold it. The frost giant just happened to be powerful enough.
I think its only thor disguised as freya
@@blackcrow288 loki turned himself into a woman to be a "handmaiden"

Honestly, I really do appreciate Loki as a character. As an author myself, I always am thinking about characters' motivations. ESPECIALLY the villain. And one could argue that Loki wasn't even much of a villain in this movie, and more of an antagonist (yes, there IS a difference).
The way he's grown up living in Thor's shadow and always overlooked, and THEN learning that he was adopted and a member of a species he'd been raised to distrust.... well, it makes perfect sense for him to lash out as he did. It wasn't RIGHT, it wasn't morally sound, but it was understandable. More of a sympathetic villain, if we must call him one.
I'm pretty sure we all agreed that Loki is more of an anti-hero than a villain. But I agree with everything.
Antagonist is a good word, I agree. It's just that he's contrasted against Thor. There's no "villainy" there.
i personally love loki as himself and as a character too, and i love his story so much. honestly after ragnorok thor just seems like a bratty kid :/
He is an anti-villain at best. If he wasn't a full on villain then he wouldn't have invaded New York.
Steph echo, may i ask you to expand on that though about Thor being a "bratty kid"??
When Odin growls and Loki looks scared, that was off the cuff and Tom was actually startled for real by that.
You speak of Loki seeking his fathers approval and didn't give a win to Loki's reaction to Odins rejection to his "I could've done it, for you father" statement at the end of the movie which cause him to jump into the abyss.
I feel that Tom Hiddleston would make a MOST EXCELLENT James Bond once Daniel Craig finally abdicates the throne.
Yes!!!!
Well I got some good news and some bad news for you. Good news is Daniel Craig was done with the role like two movies ago. Bad news is they already chose his replacement and it ain’t Loki. It’s Heimdall. Maybe he can be the next Doctor.

I'm kinda dissapointed that you missed the fact what role Loki actually played in Thor's character development. Loki lied to Thor about their father being dead and this pretty much changed something in Thor. First he only lost his powers, something that was most important to him. And then he found out what it meant to lose someone really important to him. This is where he learned the importance of responsibility. And then, even if it turned out to be a lie, Thor continued to fight for others, not for his personal enjoyment. Loki unwillingly helped Thor become better man.

One of the best Thor franchise theories out there is that it actually wasn't Odin's power that changed baby Loki's appearance but in fact Loki himself who, while Odin was holding him, looked into Odin's memories saw his first born Hela. He then shapeshifted to mimick her appearance. This tactile memory sifting is the same move he pulls of on the Valkyrie on Sakaar. It explains why he bears a striking resemblance to Hela.
Do you clowns ever heard of things like looking at something in retrospect and do you know what retroactive continuity is? The first Thor movie has no bearing on that terrible third movie. It's that terrible third movie which must reference the first, not otherwise.

I loved that scene where Odin strips Thor of his title. I was even more amazed when I found out the entire scene was improvised by Anthony Hopkins. The scene was entirely different in the script. The scene was originally very somber as Odin just looks at Thor, and Thor knows what's gonna happen. Thor kneels before Odin as he slowly starts taking away Thor's... Circle plate things... And his cape. He then utters the "Your are not worthy." but not in a loud booming voice, but in the voice of a broken father who is casting out his son. And then the hammer just falls out of his hand onto the floor cause Thor couldn't lift it anymore. After they shot that scene, Hopkins asked if they could go one more time, and the second the camera starts rolling, he just let's out that amazing speech and Tom Hiddleston butted in on a whim to try and make the scene better and Hopkins just jumped down his throat like hot coffee. When Lockhart (I'm just gonna call the director that since I can't remember his real name) yelled cut, the entire set was quiet for a good minute afterwards just taking in the breathtaking performance they just witnessed.

*7:30**:* Um . . . technically Laufey and Loki would be using pretty much the correct nomenclature, since "Asgardians" now refers to both the Aesir *and* the Vanir. The Aesir founded Asgard and had occasional clashes with the Vanir, but they settled their differences and merged the two peoples. All of them now live in Asgard, and are therefore "Asgardians." All Aesir are Asgardians, but not all Asgardians are Aesir. But in the *earliest* lays, like the one being referenced in the book, the two *were* synonymous.
It *is* true that "-ian" is a Greek suffix, but I really don't think that's the particular hair you were trying to split.
Doesn't "Asgard" just basically mean "realm of the Aesir"? And don't the Vanir originally come from Vanaheim? I vaguely remember something like that.
Gosh damn it man. From now on whenever I'm using a hammer, I will whisper upon it "Hammer Whispering".

Literally my only complaint with this movie was that it took place over the course of three days.
Really? I thought it took place over the course of a whole week!
William Edward Proof?
William Edward might be referring to the "Phase 1 timeline" graphic that was released in (if I remember correctly) the Art of Avengers book (here: marvelcinematicuniverse.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline?file=Marvel-Movie-Universe.jpeg). It has Thor's coronation beginning on "Day 2" of Fury's Big Week and the battle with the Destroyer & subsequent destruction of Bifrost happening on "Day 5"... ergo, 3 days.
Why's that? Too short a time for the redemption arc? I might agree, but it never bothers me while I watch it.
Yeah I for one don't believe Thor changed in a matter of three measly days. Loki's 'death' is what truly changed him.

The mountain at 1:04 is actually Svartalfheim, or more accurately Nidavellir. It's the "Lowest" of the nine realms, and it's the home of the Dwarfs. (I'm taking all of this from my knowledge of Norse Mythology, not Thor lore).
Fun fact, The Lonely Mountain from the Middle Earth series is also based off of Nidavellir.
Also (this is also something that bugged me about these movies, but it works well enough and is a lot more visually cooler) at 0:57 Odin looses his eye in combat, whereas in Norse Mythology Odin trades his eye to acquire knowledge.
That's a made-up word!

6:18 thing that I absolutely hate about Thor. Loki never once declared himself a king. They cut out the scene where the guards come to Loki with Odin's spear. Loki is so shocked and confused so he looks over to his mother, who tells him he's the king for now. Look it up on youtube. They cut that out and made Loki look like an asshole.
Speaking of Stellan Skarsgård, my favorite part he's played was in King Arthur (the one from 2004, with Clive Owen). His antagonist has one of the best villain lines of all time: "Finally. A man worth killing." I'd love to see an "Everything Great" about that one.
