My kit was in factory box , with all accesories ,tools ,instructions intact (by the way - nice pendrive in a form of credit card with instructions was included) Downsides: there is no dedicated connector for shift sensor - had to use splitter cable and connected with brake sensor - still it disconnects motor for not long enough ( I need to service and tune my deraileur also replace chain perhaps). Have an M625 on a 2016 TerraTrike Rover. What I like is that it does not leap out there like other Bafang motors do. On a recumbent trike you don't want that leaping, but ya can get going right off with the throttle, Be careful where the throttle is placed, especially when trying to turn tight into it. So it does great in Mode 1. Mode 2 to 5 is ghosting. I do not like ghosting. Would rather have the option to adjust assist levels, that the motor's downside, along with the oddly shaped proprietary connectors. Everything is on a CAN-BUS system. The system will not accept non-M625 CAN-BUS components. Charger verifies the motor is correct before it charges. Use a different charger, the battery claims it will not charge. That's interesting feedback on the m625. I wish they were not doing the whole CANBUS route. I'm trying out a couple of motors from a company called TOSEVEN. Might give people another option.
Thanks for the vid! I was wondering about the sprocket mount, drive cover and controller cover. Can you tell if the clearances for these pieces are any different compared to the bbshd? They look at least cosmetically different. I’m building a bbshd carbon gates belt mid drive with Alpine 8 IGH. doing all sorts of tricks to get the sprocket to sit with the least amount of offset away from bike midline. I’m doing cdx di2 sprocket custom mounted behind lekkie 42t sprocket to clear the sprocket mounting area and drive cover area. I’m to the point that I might have to shave a couple mm to the controller cover. I’m thinking that the “star” pattern on the controller cover would give me even less room to work with? Another thing I’ve noticed is that lekkie just released a new 42t bling ring “pro truckrun” that has an offset 2.1mm less than the standard 42t bling ring. I’m wondering if they are able to achieve this because of the housing redesign? By the looks of it, to achieve my alignment goals, my sprocket will pretty much be butted up against the controller cover. When people upgrade theirs controllers , can they run no controller cover for more clearance?
To me it looks the same. I can check it with a few things but I don't have all the Lekkie stuff to hand. I don't think anything has changed at all beyond the controller. I can't say that 100% for sure. Lekkie make good stuff but not sure of the reasoning for the new chain ring. If it was done in response to the M625 I am not sure either. I exect all will become clear. With the upgrades the controller cover is just a drop in. I will be looking to see how it fits but it should not take much modification if any. With the chain rings as they often extend beyond the housing the issue is hitting the chain stays with the teeth. Not sure if you are on discord but there are some very knowledgeable folks on their with regards to lekkie... discord.gg/VRZAfn8E Cheers.
Have been waiting forever but it’s going on (or past) 2 years and notta. Which is surprising as the company (bikee bike) has had another system for some time.
Am personally still chuffed with my M625. Got the 1000w kit for £900. If spending $1800 and getting an already fecked with motor I can see being sore. Looking forward to insights on the controller.
Hello! I got interested in Bafang mid-drives. Which one should I buy if my main goal is to have the most durable motor? I mean I can buy any from 250W to 1000W and if I decide to buy bigger one I am willing to reduce the power (for a legal reasons)
The BBSHD is the strongest that Bafang make and is easy to repair and maintain. If you get an Eggrider V2 you will be able to easily set limits and speed restrictions for it.
Very good informative, imparcial video. I'm looking to buy a BBSHD soon having thought about it and researched for many months, I live in rural Cornwall (UK) with lots of steep hills!. I've looked at the CYC but feel it's a bit too pricey and overpowered for my old Raleigh Ogre 21 bike. I was concerned the M625 etc would be Bafangs attempt to compete with likes of Bosch and Yamaha which has failed miserably. By reading a ton of websites and watching ever more videos on the BBSHD I feel I know it inside out and know how all the programming works. Hopefully I'll be placing an order with EM3EV soon...
Em3ev are really great! I had a very good experience with them. I know what you mean about cornwall. Lots of memories of reversing up tight lanes cause there was a tractor coming the other way! We had friends near Truro! Cheers!
Good video. Exactly as I expected with Bafang. I've gone from early bbs02a to bbshd, & I was happy with that. I'm not happy with their new product & may go cyc next.
Yeah I tell people to stick with the BBSHD. I think they are quietly dropping the 625. CYC are innovating much more but it does not seem to have the same build strength as the BBSHD does in terms of lasting 1000s of kms without issues.
Awesome video John. Well explained...thank god I purchased 2 bbshd...M625 kit looks terrible...I think Bafang's chief tech designer needs to get the sack...terrible build quality...when I get some cash I will upgrade to a high voltage ASI controller and a 72v battery...the exisisting 160nm is a sweet tractor puller..good video mate 😀 submarine.
Bought a CYC X1 PRO Gen 2. I couldn't be happier. It's louder than my old BBSHD but I've already come to love the whirring noise. I chose the brass gears. The rubber gasket is nice upgrade for this thing I must say. I still get nightmares from that BBSHD paper gasket. 🤣
@@HighVoltageKits Thanks. I'm actually in the discord, we talked a little while back. 😁 I'll be posting photos of the build soon for sure. I've ordered the headlights from CYC as well so I'm looking forward to installing those when they arrive.
I am not sure what they are doing with it. It was not well received because of all the stuff they pulled with the battery etc. Its identical mechanically to the BBSHD tho
Just curious, how did you remove the stripped screws? The screws are stripped on my bbshd also can't get the cover off I bought some allen and hex wrenches for removing stripped screws but didn't work just curious what method you used to remove the stripped screws?
I very gently backed it out. Once it was out there was a chunk of the threaded that was just loose inside. Yours sounds like it really jammed in there. You could try some heat and a pentrating oil. If you wanted to post pics on discord people might have more ideas. discord.gg/high-voltage
If they want it back they can pay the shipping. The customer service process was horrendous. I don't like to air my grievances with them as it could have been a simple error. I hope so or their returns department will get very busy.
thank you for your video im looking to buy one this year i will go for the bbshd .im like you i want to be able to reprogram and use a battery that fits my frame regards
Hey! Thanks for the interest. There is not much difference in the the two really. I don't have a BBS02 and really with the path I am going it would not make much sense right now as I have limited budget to stretch. There are a few people using them on our discord server. You are most welcome to join and we can certainly help you with this motor system and you can chat to riders using them both stock and with the upgrade kit we do. discord.gg/high-voltage
Em3ev.com is good. Luna cycle, Electron cycles, North bay bikes, Golden motor. You can also use Ali express. Depends somewhat on where you live in the world. Hope this helps.
looks like the management at Befang put the accountants and the arts department in charge when bringing out the M625 , then locked the engineers in the basement!
The battery is a killer, though I like the cells. I don't know why anyone would think Bafang wants the DIY market. They opened a factory in Poland. They will ship stuff into Europe where there isn't so much performance equipment. They are going after Bosch. They are going for the big bucks. So what's the problem if CYC is a better DIY motor, a performance motor? All they have to do is develop the DIY market. I just run a stock BBS02. I don't want much more and if I did, I would want to get out of the ebike classification and into something completely street legal. There's a lot of stuff in China, Enduro ebikes with pedals, but 5,000 watts with 3 kwh batteries, hub motors. Everyone is juggling a lot of balls, and how big are any of these markets? How many e-motorcyles will Sondors sell? Too many games. Some people stretch the regs. Some people lock down the bikes. And every time you order from China, you play garbage roulette.
I think they will need to step up the game to touch bosch. Or make it much cheaper. Interesting on the factory information I was not aware. If they sells tons of these then I guess they are doing well. It just annoys me that a few simple changes would have made it viable for so many more people and sell them more motors?
Disappointing that it comes with a proprietary battery. It seems the price tag converted to US dollars is much higher than buying a BBHSD and battery separately. I would buy a BBHSD while they last.
I think they are doing this for the legal aspect as in some countries the limits for street legal Ebikes are stricter. I believe in Canada we are allowed up to a 500watt motor with a speed limit of 32km/h. I think they also state that the motors can not be altered or reprogrammed either. I'm not an expert but that's what my research has come up while I was looking into my own build options. I don't really agree with it, I mean cars have way more power then what's needed for commuting but there are no laws saying a street car can't be over 300hp and go over 100km/h. Mind you that is "street Legal" if it is for off road purposes, go nuts and have fun haha
My experience in Canada is if you are respectful and don't go silly the authorities have way bigger fish to fry than a guy pushing the limits a bit on an ebike. There is not a motor in the world that can propel a bike at 32ph up a 10% hill at 500 watts. Some countries are really cracking down tho yes. Its the actions of a few reckless fools that hurt us all. The archaic rules that try and shoe horn us into the car based system does not help either! Thanks for the comment Mickey! Cheers
I'd say stranger things have happened. It could be. I think that they fucked up and sent me a return. What got my goat was they instantly accused me of being the one that damaged it.
They are definitely trying to compete in the Euro-spec market instead of the DIY market with this kit. I heard lower motor RPM and torque numbers. It seems to me a legal CYA shift in their ethos. I even understand a proprietary battery, from a liability POV, but the single huge size makes the new kit unusable on most bikes, unless you run extending cables and mount the battery somewhere other than the frame.
I think that they would be better off with a new motor then. Cause it has no torque sensor and the competition does. Or at least price it lower. The lack of decent programming is a real worry because if people can't get it to run nicely its more dangerous than a high power version. I am confused also lol. Cheers
@@HighVoltageKits Well it shows there's no real point to change. I agree it's a story of wasted potential more than anything. Compared to the steps made by say Bosch in the same time frame to improve their products
For myself and many urban and commuter people, the CYC X1 will always be discounted immediately, irrespective of its numerous advantages, because of i) horrible electric-chainsaw noise ii) comparatively more annoying installation. And I wouldn't hold out because of the proprietary battery - I'd imagine someone's going hack/bypass that shortly...we always do.
If i didn't find a good deal on a new BBSHD and a large capacity and current handling 52V battery for €600 less than a CYC in my country (€1600 to my home without a battery because of dumb import taxes and shit) i would've 100% went for the CYC in my case its just a matter of money honestly, the bike i run it on did cost €~400 out of a store back in the day so i definitely wouldn't put a freaking motor thats worth 4 times more than the POS on there, if i could get the CYC for €1K i wouldn'tve hesitated, at all torque sensing, that power and a great controller.. who cares about the sound it makes and yes i would've used it for commutes as i don't do mtb shit but i have quite a few uphill parts where torque and power definitely are great to have so far my ebike sits at a total of €1.5K approx (just the thing itself and the components on it, not really counting things i've replaced etc, except i've replaced the wheels, tires, chain, freewheel etc. to better ones) i'm not a person that wanna pay a huge price for the best performing and lightweight parts i've previously had a Tongsheng on it and i loved the torque sensor feel which i unfortunately miss with the Bafang.
I think people have tried. I'm not sure many folks are ready for the extra complexity it entails. I'd probably save it for a more power motor on a electric motorcycle. It would be a good project. Thanks for the comment! Cheers
This re design by Bafang was nothing to do with making the motor better. (In fact they made it worse). It is a business strategy to get higher returns by selling semi direct to customers and profiting from the battery sale also. The cosmetic redesign was to create a new model, something that people with think is a step up from the HD. Then they selected a handful of online resellers to trade the motors and established warehouses in major countries to distribute without air freight (can't fly batteries). This way Bafang get the distribution margin at point of sale. The reseller makes a cut and that's that. There is no room for a local seller in this model. Don't expect your favorite local reseller to be sticking this and helping you out. This is Bafang business model for maximum return.
@@HighVoltageKits Daryl from Lekkie here. I tried to become one of the"agents" for this motor so I could create a channel for global resellers to purchase, but the terms were unreasonable and the distributor price similar to what you buy on line. Bafang have been quite open about their new business model. I don't think the HD motor is going anywhere. If it did it would be to cut out dealers and force customers to buy this model online at one of the chosen few. It really is time for a new player.
Just out of interest I run a BAC855 on a BBS 02 on 52v with no problems, the motor is almost silent PAS programmed to 1200w and throttle to 2600w extra power without the extra weight of the BBS HD take no notice of people that say you can't run an 02 on that controller or power, ride with "common sense" are the ultimate 2 words used here.. 🙂
@@yj8471 I am considering this, especially because I do not use the throttle (not even installed).. Somehow I thinking PAS only will be easier on the motor..
Well this 625 is hot garbage but at least the bbshd can still be purchased for now.Cyc will win this battle if bafang keeps this up.This is what happens when you sell out the company.
@@HighVoltageKits Hope this will be a wake up call for them in sales and make a real updated new motor bbshdr.Good luck with the motor anyway can't wait to see the mods you can come up with for it.Take care and best of luck.
I was more interested in how similar it would be to the bbshd. But yeah I was pretty annoyed they sent me a return motor. Either that or it was poorly assembled.
@@HighVoltageKits I have a bbshd had the rotor failure got the new improved one with the old Bering installed fit right in everybody said you need the new stator fit right in the old one my opinion the old rotor was in shallow on the upper bearing always had vibration at certain rpm vibration gone running it at 30 amps no problems.
It makes me feel that Chinese manufacturers are no longer able to produce good quality products at an affordable price any more. Thus, they cut corners on the product components in order to remain competitive. Not a good sign. It happens to a few things that I have been using.
If you look at how long consumer items last from a China based manufacturer and a Swiss or German product was quality ever really there for some things? This motor kit based on my experience is neither qualify OR good value.
@@HighVoltageKits A few products from China, though not a lot, like DJI drones do show their abilities to innovate in some areas. However, I think this has come too late and too little to save the country's competitiveness when they are showing the world with their aggressiveness just how dangerous is for other countries to rely heavily on Chinese factories on their vital supplies. Major industrial nations will definitely tighten their technology transfer to China and diversify their supply chain, once the pandemic settles.
Disappointed in bafang. I have had the bbshd and I have 12540 kph on it with no issues but this motor looks like it was rushed.bbshd is better. Bafang really cut corners. They are getting cheaper and cheaper and they know they will sell because of the there bbshd. I am going for a cyclone pro gen 2 or I will buy a bac2000 and wire it to my bbshd. That's interesting feedback on the m625. I wish they were not doing the whole CANBUS route. I'm trying out a couple of motors from a company called TOSEVEN. Might give people another option.
Glad I passed on the M625. BBSHD is the better choice, although looking very dated now.
Yeah. I can't see me using it. Hope the bbshd will still be made over the next years.
these are all junk, just get a hub motor which is faster, efficient, and more powerful
@@Blox117 which hub motor are you about?
@@musmanov4642 i have several
What's the difference between the 2? Any improvements?
Hi there, just a quick question. Have heard of lightest kits? They are similar to CyC? I'm thinking of buying one for my mountain bike. Cheers.
No I have not. Can you post a link?
It’s a indigogo kickstarter, they haven’t been shipped yet…
Have been waiting forever but it’s going on (or past) 2 years and notta. Which is surprising as the company (bikee bike) has had another system for some time.
Ahhhh. Yeah. I know it. I hope it delivers. There is a channel on the discord for it.
Am personally still chuffed with my M625. Got the 1000w kit for £900. If spending $1800 and getting an already fecked with motor I can see being sore. Looking forward to insights on the controller.
Thats great to hear. I am very glad that it is installed and working for you well. I will update on the controller stuff once it gets tested. Cheers
Also I think the lights are really good. Shell suit coordination or otherwise
Its very much personal preference I agree. I used to wear a few shocking shell suits back in the day 😆
We got your covered! Look forward to that. Cheers
I don't have any issue with the CYC noise but for some it's a big deal. Awesome to hear about your bike! Cheers
@@HighVoltageKits Thanks. I'm actually in the discord, we talked a little while back. 😁 I'll be posting photos of the build soon for sure. I've ordered the headlights from CYC as well so I'm looking forward to installing those when they arrive.
Perfect. I can't keep up with all the different name tags! Look forward to it. Especially the lights.
Is it possible to mount a widely available bbshd controller on a m625? What would it take to get it to work?
There is a video on here where a guy does this. You need to drill and tap a new hole or two. The video is called all controllers work I think.
@@HighVoltageKits Thanks for the tip. Its too bad I'm not able to find the video, it sounds like exactly what I need.
great vid... respect is given from Latvia, Europe
Much appreciated, thanks!
Along with the disappointment, they also lack some bracket mount to fixate the motor like the cyc x1 pro or stealth
It has a loop that you can use a hose clamp on. But its a pretty ugly thing.
Would a standard bbshd controller fit on that? Or atlest connect up to it
In theory yes it should. Not got one to try tho. The issue is that they changed the bolt pattern and size slightly.
Isnt the m625 the same power as bbso2? I don't even see m625 on bafang website now
I am not sure what they are doing with it. It was not well received because of all the stuff they pulled with the battery etc. Its identical mechanically to the BBSHD tho
@@HighVoltageKits yeah the marketing is rather scattered
Great job as usual, thanks for the Intel.
Thanks Arnold, Cheers
Just curious, how did you remove the stripped screws? The screws are stripped on my bbshd also can't get the cover off I bought some allen and hex wrenches for removing stripped screws but didn't work just curious what method you used to remove the stripped screws?
I very gently backed it out. Once it was out there was a chunk of the threaded that was just loose inside. Yours sounds like it really jammed in there. You could try some heat and a pentrating oil. If you wanted to post pics on discord people might have more ideas. discord.gg/high-voltage
Try an 'Easy Out' drill bit tool, or simular brand.
The biggest improvement is the loop on top for a hose clamp to secure the motor to the down tube on the frame.
Its not needed installed right. But it helps a few people. Perhaps they had lots of issues?
Looks like you got a return motor?
I think so. Will be interesting to see if my guy can get the controller working
Clearly been taken apart before you got a hold of it. Might have been a return. Need to send it back out again
If they want it back they can pay the shipping. The customer service process was horrendous. I don't like to air my grievances with them as it could have been a simple error. I hope so or their returns department will get very busy.
Can this be used with the BAC HV kit?
Yes Sir, all the upgrade kits work. Even the stock controller with a bit of effort! ruclips.net/video/E0uTBAppIEs/видео.html
I wonder if the CYC is the better? BBSHD could be a runner? And 72 Volts sounds more better! Be Well.
Thanks James. Neither system is perfect but only one is being developed in a meaningful way. Cheers
@@HighVoltageKits are referring to the CYC?
Yes in terms of continuing development
thank you for your video im looking to buy one this year i will go for the bbshd .im like you i want to be able to reprogram and use a battery that fits my frame regards
Sounds good!
Can you make a BBS02 video?
Bafang tried to upgrade the BBSHD and publish a successors. They didn't even put a torque sensor in, which was the most requested thing!! Shame..
Yeah it was not a great decision! They could have done so much more!
Hoping that someone would share the dimensions of the cable plastic cover so that we can 3d print some for our BBSHD
I don't think it will work with a bbshd as the motor housing will lack the required bolt holes.
Where is the best place to buy a BBSHD kit?
Em3ev.com is good. Luna cycle, Electron cycles, North bay bikes, Golden motor. You can also use Ali express. Depends somewhat on where you live in the world. Hope this helps.
@@HighVoltageKits Thank you!
I think the shell suit would seal it for me! 😂👍
I remember rocking something pretty awful 😆
looks like the management at Befang put the accountants and the arts department in charge when bringing out the M625 , then locked the engineers in the basement!
I'd love to have seen the actual conversations that went on.
Yeah. Its not a great situation. I hope some common sense prevails and they keep the bbshd
Cheers
Could customs have had it apart?
I'd say stranger things have happened. It could be. I think that they fucked up and sent me a return. What got my goat was they instantly accused me of being the one that damaged it.
Looks like you got a rebuild, probably was damaged, sent back and they just threw it back together for a quick sale
Or a return. They did a crap job either way lol. Cheers
Cheers
@@HighVoltageKits Seems like only pointless changes to win a market they're unlikely to win, while abandoning loyal fans and customers..
I was waiting for this and then totally forgot to watch it
No worries hope it was worth it!
@@HighVoltageKits Well it shows there's no real point to change. I agree it's a story of wasted potential more than anything. Compared to the steps made by say Bosch in the same time frame to improve their products
Yes. I was very disappointed. Other companies leaving them behind. Their only saving grace is there is not much else in that format.
fantastic info a great vid thanks
Thanks 😊
For myself and many urban and commuter people, the CYC X1 will always be discounted immediately, irrespective of its numerous advantages, because of i) horrible electric-chainsaw noise ii) comparatively more annoying installation.
And I wouldn't hold out because of the proprietary battery - I'd imagine someone's going hack/bypass that shortly...we always do.
You would think so. I have a few people looking into it. It also seems the bbshd will be around longer now.
If i didn't find a good deal on a new BBSHD and a large capacity and current handling 52V battery for €600 less than a CYC in my country (€1600 to my home without a battery because of dumb import taxes and shit) i would've 100% went for the CYC
in my case its just a matter of money honestly, the bike i run it on did cost €~400 out of a store back in the day
so i definitely wouldn't put a freaking motor thats worth 4 times more than the POS on there, if i could get the CYC for €1K i wouldn'tve hesitated, at all
torque sensing, that power and a great controller.. who cares about the sound it makes
and yes i would've used it for commutes as i don't do mtb shit but i have quite a few uphill parts where torque and power definitely are great to have
so far my ebike sits at a total of €1.5K approx (just the thing itself and the components on it, not really counting things i've replaced etc, except i've replaced the wheels, tires, chain, freewheel etc. to better ones)
i'm not a person that wanna pay a huge price for the best performing and lightweight parts
i've previously had a Tongsheng on it and i loved the torque sensor feel which i unfortunately miss with the Bafang.
It's mandatory to listen to Jessie's Girl while riding with this new retro motor from Bafang.
I think it should be 😆
Thank you Captain 👍🏻
Welcome Graham! Cheers
Would be nice if it had a water cooling shell
That's about the best summary of it as I have seen so far. 👌
Good news on the HD then. I will be suggesting people stick with that one! Thanks for making such great products!
