"Double bass drumming is not about putting weight on your ankles."
Tell that to gene hoglan.
Thank you very much for your reply. I really appreciate that you take the time to answer not just my question but everybody else's as well!
Keep up the good work!
Thanks a lot, i've learned a so much with your videos ... They're only a few who share's their double bass drum secrets ! I'm a beginner at double bass drum and now i know what i need to do to get better.
Thanks again Ensiferumftw !!!
You make good videos. You and I have very different playing styles but I still find these videos very informative. Keep it up man!
Thanks for answering my question and the great vid! Also the axis-pedals info was very helpful!
Hey man, thank you very much for answering my question so quickly. Please keep the video's coming, you are a great player and deserve any complements that you receive. God Bless.
THANKS alot guy !!! i started playing drum 5 years ago, but without full time cause of studies and stuff and i was very awfull at double bass..., then i saw your video and i bought my own double bass (cause i was playing on a friend one), now i m jamming since july on it, and the dream is becoming true, i was just able to go at 130 bpm ..and now i can go on some triplets at 170(heel up), or 220 triplets but by doing heel toe !! so once again ! thanks !!
You are on the right way to became a good drumteacher and workshopdrummer, go on in this way, dude!
your explaination was very enlightful, thanks dude! all the best
this vid has helped me out a lot. thanks for taking the time to make it.
Excellent double bass playing!!!! Congratulations!!!
Hey bro, its nice to see someone who can play double bass fast without heel toe or slide. I have big feet and have never really been able to get it going. I use it mostly to play triplets and with my right foot.
This guy's video is covers everything you want to know! Pedals definitely matter. Find the ones that work for you, that produce the sound you want (also the beaters are important, I use Iron Cobras with wooden beaters). The pedal itself doesn't make you better, but getting used to a newer, more quality pedal will allow you to become more accustomed to it in ways you couldn't with your POS pedal.
Sweet tips man, really helpful, thanks for taking the time to make this :)
Thank you very much for the in depth tutorial and the information. It is very helpful.
I feel so proud to be part of the metal community, knowing I have common interests with people like this wonderful gentleman...seriously man, kudos.
Teaching myself drums at my dorm in uni atm, I don't have anything so far I just tap on the floor and such but I feel ready for a pair of pedals with a small board to tap on, hopefully that'll do for the moment. Wish I could fit a full kit but I dunno if it's gonna happen =/
nice dude. helped a lot. Love ur pedals
Holly Molly Great Lesson and Awesome Playing, thanks so much. Drums are cool
@Ensiferumftw hey firs toff thanks for replying man, unlike a lot of other people who do tutorials! and just a few minutes ago i tgithened them, i think they went as tight as my right, more or less the same anyway, i tested with the beaters! ill just keep playing everyday and hope i get faster eventually haha, thanks for this bro!
Your video really helped my speed. I have Iron Cobra Jr.'s, and can only do about 210 or so, but I've went from around 165 to 210 with what you said. I've been looking around everywhere on how to improve speed, but you're the only guy that really helped. Could you list your drum set and what kind of meinl cymbals you have? They sound great.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and knowledge Dude!
Nice video, man! I hope you had the chance to go to the Neurotic last weekend. I couldn't go this time unfortunately.
@Ensiferumftw echt awesome skills man! respect!
That's fantastic man.
Great video man. helpful information
Okay thanks! Your drumming is awesome!! And the double strokes are just a quick step back on the pedal right
i actually love your phrasing
First of all, I found this video extremely helpful, and wanted to express my thanks for the effort you put into uploading it. I do however have a question, have you ever had any problems with your right leg being significantly faster then your left? I'm finding it difficult to maintain a consistent rhythm, was wondering if you had any advice?
HELLO, THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST VIDEO TO SHOW THE DOUBLEPEDAL-TECHNIC!!!
GREAT :-)
AL
Hey thanks so much..this was really helpful for me..I am just starting to play double kick for about 2 months now..I am on about 110 bpm doing sixteenths and can not get any faster for some reason..I can hold this for an average of 2 to 3 mins with a metronome..anyway cheers hope to hear from you..johnny.T
Dude I so wish I could toke with you...you're just the kind of friend I need at the moment!
Pretty good, seriously, if you are in a band they sure are lucky of having such a good drumer >: )
Anytime bro! Keep on rocking
really nice work!
Thank you for putting the times for each section.
i haven`t found out anything new for me. but anyway your video is good and useful for beginners. great job bro!
That's awesome. I'm motivated. I `ll stick it!
@TheRadrussian1 It's true nice pedals help. I myself use axis. I know that many metal drummers including myself like tight spring tension because the pedal responds faster and a for triggers. They are just a helping hand for metal drummers :)
you're drumming is sick!
Thanks! That really helped me out.
Thanks so much! This really helped.
@ebyjon Dankje! Helaas is Engels toch de taal die het makkelijkst te volgen is voor iedereen.
@TheStinnMann Thanks a lot man, I have been thinking for weeks to come up with that!
thank you willing to share knowledge with all of your video may be the best in online teaching drum
May I ask what sound you're using in your Alesis D4? I bought the same module to get the amazing sound you have, but I can't find a good one... Help would be highly appriciated! Thanks in advance!
awesome man!! thx for this video!
your band is great
Awesome man! Are you talking about the flat foot technique? I can't really do any of that stuff. I have been wearing ankle weights for a few weeks now though, that is really damn tough! I do see some results though.
Check out any Axis Longboards, or look for Pearl Demon Drives. They're both direct link pedals, so their response is really fast. The Tama Speed Cobra is also good, they're very light and have a good response, all about personal preference. For the best result check all pedals in a local drum shop to test the difference between direct link and chain pedals and find your personal favourite. Hope that helps!
Thanks for that great video!
I started out (and still have them) with Dixon pedals too. That gives me hope that i'll be as good as you :)
Dude yout in persistence right? I saw you some times ago in bremmen...this was just amazing!
Now the number one tip to learning to play fast double bass tight is to learn to play slow double bass tight and then gradually build up speed. There are tons of techniques out there that allow you to exploit the momentum you build when you trigger the pedal dynamics, but all of those are worth zip if the tightness doesn't lie naturally in your body. So once you have that tightness, start working on some of the simpler techniques for high speed - like the heel-toe double kick.
Play with Chaos Inception. Pretty good video young blood. Keep the hard work!!
thanks for the help dude, really helped.
Really nice video...Can I ask you what is the type of your base drum? It sounds really great...
Guys one thing that's really important that this gentleman doesn't mention is spring tension; you NEED to make sure the spring tension in both your pedals is the same otherwise your drumming will be uneven and sloppy if you try to do anything higher than 100 bpm, and even then...
I've had my double kick pedal for about a week now, and one thing I'm finding REALLY hard is control; if I try really hard I could go fast but it'll be uncontrollable; I can't play short bursts or switch tempo.
omg that was extremely informative. thank you :D
Most of my playing has been for practise or just for myself; how do you come up with rhythms and beats (especially fills) that fit the music for your band? Do you write them yourself or is it more a collaberation with the rest of the band?
Great vid, really enjoy your work, keep playing \m/
Have you tried the gibraltar intruder direct drives before? And if so, how do they compare to the axis or demon drives?
Very Informative thanks man!
@LoadingSet7 The Ddrum trigger is 70 euros, the module costs about 100 euros on Ebay. Then just some cables and ur done.
Hey man. really nice. One thing ive always wondered but havent had enough money to experiment with is wether or not the kind of Bass skin ur using makes a difference.
Thanks again for answering my question. Good advice, I'll try to do as you have suggested and see how things go. I have subscribed to your channel, so I'll stay in touch and let you know how I'm doing. Stay loose and happy drumming.
@BandaDK I might be a little late in responding on this. But got 1 correction; in most cases you CAN change a setup so the trigger will variate in the intensity you hit the head, so the sound will be softer when you hit softer, and vice versa.
Great video! I have one small question. What kick sound from Alesis D4 did you used in this video? Thanks a lot for answer.
Hey man! nice videos... I have a question.... which and how many things do you use to muffle your bass drum? i have some troubles with my triggerin... thanks! :D cheers from MEXICO :)
Hey, first of all, thanks for the DB tutorial, and second, I was wondering if you could just record yourself playing. The intro at the beginning sounded awesome.
Yep, pedals are crucial! A new world will open mate ;)
Something that I never see discussed is the tension of the pedals. Do you tend to tighten up the springs a fair bit or do you keep them loose? Tighter makes more sense to me really but I'd like to get a professional opinion.
You're a God, mate. :)
o yeh.. good vid man. pretty informative!
Awesome video!
I just have a quick question: generally on double pedals, should you set the left pedal spring tighter or lighter? Since it has to compensate for more mass including the connecting bar.
this doods so awesome!
\m/
Hi, thanks a lot for your feedback. Is your left foot just slower when you play seperately or is it simply not keeping up with your right foot? This second scenario is not very common when you practiced a lot because your locomotion then is so advanced that your left will follow your right. So if this is the case, simply play slower and build up your speed more slowly.
Thanks for this video man.. I have one question, how do you practice your left foot? Do you train your left foot the exact same way with the right one? thanks :)
Very nice video. Thank you.
well done man
Sweet!! Thank you for your reply!!
great job by the ways
What are the setting for your d4? Have one and love your sound.
@TutaWookyDrummer and also i have the classic blacks...do u think there are any differences between the standard silver longboards and the classic black? apart from the sonic hammer beaters. thanks
Hey Ens,
Big fan, my biggest issue, is keeping myself in-time with the rest of my drumming at speed?
Any tips or things you'd recommend trying?
Wich heads do you recommend ( and to use with triggers)? My bassdrum head got broke. :(
How is you DDrum trigger holding out? Are there any misfires? or Cross-talk?
And how did you set your calibration on your Module?
Any advice on if I should get this trigger for my bass drum?
Holy crap that was a fast reply!
But let's say I want to have medium spring tension - should the left pedal (moving the connecting bar) be lighter, tighter or equal to the right pedal?
In order to get an even resistance from both pedals if you know what I mean?
This video was very good, but what kind of double drumpedals would you prefer for a beginner of double bass? My budget is around 150-200 dollars. Plzz answer
If you like axis but want a more reliable pedal then you have to get either the trick dominators, which i have, or the trickpro-1v bigfoot. Their direct drive longboards but they use a compression spring. basically you hit the pedal and it compresses a spring inclosed in a small housing. its easy to adjust, you just turn a knob. plus everything is adjustable with a drum key. and switching from double kick to 2 singles takes literally 30 seconds. dominators run about $600 (U.S.) Pro-1v about $900
If you mean the beater being closer to the skin, then yes for speed because it has less distance to hit the skin, and less distance on the way back. And if your foot board is adjustable you can change that too. I don't suggest putting it too high, but you should be comfortable playing with your heel down.
Sick dude
what kind of kit you play? we play(that's me and my daughter)a Yamaha stage custom with speed cobras ,and what you said about them makes sense. I am building a DW performance kit now for myself.
Fuck, im with my laptop now in a hotel, i cant hear. Ill watch it on 21st of july..
cant waith dude, youre one of my favorite drummers on the net!!!!
Well, great video, thx alot !
But why did you chose to play with a little beater-head distance instead of a standard one like 15cm ?
I like the swing recoil on your pedals.
What do you think about mapex pedals? And which beaters do you like best?
hey..sick vdeo btw, i have a question about the symbal hidden by the double base cam in the top right of the screen its a 26.42..i just wanna know what size and what type it is....Thanks
very insightful!
Cool video dude. By the way, nice hair!
at the moment i have iron cobra's they are very good and nice to use. i would suggest getting them, but maybe compare the two (if you can demo them in a store) and see what you feel is best. dont forget -practise makes perfect
Cheers mate I'm completely self taught but had trouble getting faster beats and this has helped massively. Any tips on how to stop my hand wanting to do what my foot is doing. Subbed ya an liked 2
