As an Eastern NC native, I am proud of this episode. Well researched and some very good restaurants were chosen that are great representatives of our unique style of BBQ. Retired Marine who has been all over the country. I've eaten about every type and style of BBQ there is. Its all good in its own way. I've become very fond of the Memphis dry rub style, but NOTHING beats Eastern North Carolina whole hog with scrunchy skin mixed in. The original smoked pork and still my favorite. He finally figured out the proper way to eat smoked pig. Half a fork of BBQ paired with good collard greens. Doesn't get any better. Thank you for posting this.

Not mexican but had quite a few dinners at my friends house involving mexicans making their own bbq. Someone could make a killing with a Mexican/Eastern NC style bbq restaurant.
I am a ENC (Eastern North Carolina) woman. We travel 2hrs to the skylight inn for the barbeque. We by enough to freeze and eat some there also. I love the crunchy skin they chop into the meat.
The beauty with marks videos is he truly enjoys each place. He doesn’t rank or pick sides, he just appreciates each place for what they are. Great job!

I love how Mark gives props to small mom and pop restaurants in small towns. I'm a SE VA native and love me some pulled pork bbq with the vinegar and red pepper mix. But with the crunchy skin?? I was never served that. May have to visit them places soon.

Im a native New Yorker from Bensonhurst Brooklyn born and raised 🇮🇹💯% I've been to skylight inn twice and sam jones(the owner) comes up to nyc for the big 🍎 block party every year so ive had his pork there 5 times the whole hog bbq they make really is on another level from anywhere else that I've tried when it comes to pork
Thank you for this video and for honoring our Great Eastern NC BBQ traditions! I grew up in Wilmington, NC and in the 1950’s and 60’s my granddaddy had a BBQ place there that was known all over the state. He roasted whole hogs over hardwood coals for 24 hours in the cinder block smokehouse behind the restaurant, then served the luscious meat with the cracklin’s and his amazing vinegar based sauce. He had a garden out back where he grew his own peppers for the hot pepper vinegar he put on the tables, and his own cabbage, pole beans, okra, and other ingredients for slaw and sides. And he made Johnnycakes instead of hush puppies, studded with little bits of pork cracklin’ and whole corn kernels. I could go on and on, but NC whole hog BBQ is definitely the best there is!

Love the focus on their bar-B-Q styles. NC is so much different than the Texas BBQ I do and was raised on. I also cant help but wonder how much of the friendliness & 'over accommodation' you experience is the result of the camera & free ad & exposure you present from your You-tube channel for most of these establishments. I have lived in the NC area & found mostly normal country folk same as in other states.

This was so great. In 2020 I took my two dogs on a barbecue vacation and hit some of these very same spots. Skylight in is by far my favorite that I had on that trip. I also ventured over into Lexington and of that style Lexington barbecue was hands-down, my favorite. I will never forget my time there, and how much it influenced my own barbecue.
I was born and raised between Ayden and Goldsboro. I totally loved loved loved this episode. I’ve been watching you eat your way around the world for a couple of years. Your facial expressions tell the tale. Of the 5 places you went I don’t know which was the best eating but I can tell you which one was the most appealing to the eyes to me. It's originated in the Philippines called LECHON BABOY! It's a delicacy there. And it's really a whole hog, from head to tail, grilled using bamboo tree.
Lechon is not the same as ENC bbq sir. Very similar from a crispy skin perspective. I cook both at home. Born and raised NC, but lived in Nor Cal Bay Area for 20 yes. And lechon was my BBQ
It's so satisfying watching you eat the food I've grown up on. (NC boy) I come to your channel to see food from places I've never been but watching you eat foods from my home state is just as great to watch, if not better!
This video sure made my mouth water just thinking about the juices fused with the meat. The first one with the cracklings mixed in sounded amazing. I hope one day I get to visit one of those places!
The first pig picking I ever went to was in Eastern NC in 1978. We cooked the whole hog. It was great and I was hooked. Have attended many since then and helped out with some. Love cooking a whole hog. 👌.
I've been to all of these places except Bum's (making plans now, though) and they're all excellent. I'm glad to see you did the cornbread, barbecue, and cole slaw stack at Skylight. The first time I visited B's I was struck by how fresh that cole slaw was, the cabbage still so peppery. They were just as friendly at Grady's when I visited so what you see is totally real. I need to try Wilber's again as I visited before the current owners.

I love bbq. I was privileged to have NC bbq several years ago when visiting my aunt who lives in Monroe. That vinegar based sauce is to die for with that chpped whole hog pork. Simply amazing! Thanks Mark for another great food tour but you're going to have to do another bbq tour from South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee and Kansas and do a comparison to see which one you like best.

I love how Mark gives props to small mom and pop restaurants in small towns. I'm a SE VA native and love me some pulled pork bbq with the vinegar and red pepper mix. But with the crunchy skin?? I was never served that. May have to visit them places soon.
In most places you need to ask for skin and most places will bring it if available.
New favorite video on this channel... and I've been watching for YEARS. I love that it's almost an hour long, love that it's centered on BBQ, and absolutely love the five places he went. Grady's is now on my bucket list!!!

I’m Eastern NC BBQ girl and yes the vinegar based bbq is the best. There is also a place in NC called Redneck BBQ Lab and their BBQ is awesome! If you come back to NC you would love their food!!

Im a native New Yorker from Bensonhurst Brooklyn born and raised 🇮🇹💯% I've been to skylight inn twice and sam jones(the owner) comes up to nyc for the big 🍎 block party every year so ive had his pork there 5 times the whole hog bbq they make really is on another level from anywhere else that I've tried when it comes to pork

Thank you for this video and for honoring our Great Eastern NC BBQ traditions! I grew up in Wilmington, NC and in the 1950’s and 60’s my granddaddy had a BBQ place there that was known all over the state. He roasted whole hogs over hardwood coals for 24 hours in the cinder block smokehouse behind the restaurant, then served the luscious meat with the cracklin’s and his amazing vinegar based sauce. He had a garden out back where he grew his own peppers for the hot pepper vinegar he put on the tables, and his own cabbage, pole beans, okra, and other ingredients for slaw and sides. And he made Johnnycakes instead of hush puppies, studded with little bits of pork cracklin’ and whole corn kernels. I could go on and on, but NC whole hog BBQ is definitely the best there is!

Love the focus on their bar-B-Q styles. NC is so much different than the Texas BBQ I do and was raised on. I also cant help but wonder how much of the friendliness & 'over accommodation' you experience is the result of the camera & free ad & exposure you present from your You-tube channel for most of these establishments. I have lived in the NC area & found mostly normal country folk same as in other states.

This was so great. In 2020 I took my two dogs on a barbecue vacation and hit some of these very same spots. Skylight in is by far my favorite that I had on that trip. I also ventured over into Lexington and of that style Lexington barbecue was hands-down, my favorite. I will never forget my time there, and how much it influenced my own barbecue.

I was born and raised between Ayden and Goldsboro. I totally loved loved loved this episode. I’ve been watching you eat your way around the world for a couple of years. Your facial expressions tell the tale. Of the 5 places you went I don’t know which was the best eating but I can tell you which one was the most appealing to the eyes to me. Skylight Inn looked the most appetizing especially the collards. Thanks for doing eastern North Carolina proud and keep eating your way around the world.

It's originated in the Philippines called LECHON BABOY! It's a delicacy there. And it's really a whole hog, from head to tail, grilled using bamboo tree.
Lechon is not the same as ENC bbq sir. Very similar from a crispy skin perspective. I cook both at home. Born and raised NC, but lived in Nor Cal Bay Area for 20 yes. And lechon was my BBQ

The first pig picking I ever went to was in Eastern NC in 1978. We cooked the whole hog. It was great and I was hooked. Have attended many since then and helped out with some. Love cooking a whole hog. 👌.

I've been to all of these places except Bum's (making plans now, though) and they're all excellent. I'm glad to see you did the cornbread, barbecue, and cole slaw stack at Skylight. The first time I visited B's I was struck by how fresh that cole slaw was, the cabbage still so peppery. They were just as friendly at Grady's when I visited so what you see is totally real. I need to try Wilber's again as I visited before the current owners.

I love bbq. I was privileged to have NC bbq several years ago when visiting my aunt who lives in Monroe. That vinegar based sauce is to die for with that chpped whole hog pork. Simply amazing! Thanks Mark for another great food tour but you're going to have to do another bbq tour from South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee and Kansas and do a comparison to see which one you like best.
