NORTH CAROLINA, USA - Welcome to North Carolina, one of the capitals of Barbecue, in the world. Today I’m taking you on an ultimate BBQ tour of Eastern North Carolina which is famous for whole hog barbecue!
During this food tour we’re going to 5 of the best restaurants in North Carolina, for Eastern style bbq.
The Skylight Inn, Ayden, North Carolina (goo.gl/maps/Wj3t9yRDw464Edmp7) - First stop is The Skylight Inn, easily one of the most well known bbq restaurants in North Carolina, in the United States. They do things the right way, whole hog, slow cooked over smoking coals. One of the best things about The Skylight Inn is when the whole hogs are ready they chop them up, with a ratio of meat, fat, and crispy skin, into an insanely juicy chopped bbq tray. It’s truly a life-changing bbq experience.
Bum's Restaurant (goo.gl/maps/yfWPbidoykXLAtGe8) - Just down the road from The Skylight Inn you’ll find Bum's Restaurant, another long time bbq restaurant. Along with whole hog bbq, they also have plenty of other southern US foods and great sides. They do their bbq quite differently, instead of being chopped its much more shredded.
B's Barbecue (goo.gl/maps/AgiGLpQPSwhdWDgb7) - Greenville, North Carolina - Next we drove out to B's Barbecue, a local favorite. I had really wanted to try the chicken bbq, but unfortunately they had already sold out. We barely made it in time to get some whole hog, but luckily we did. It was delicious and so were all the sides.
Grady's Barbecue (goo.gl/maps/1tTj9qgL2guawpK48) Dudley, North Carolina - Another amazing and one of the best bbq restaurants to try in North Carolina is in the small town of Dudley. Again, they do things the right way, slow cooked over coals, the entire pig. Along with the pork, their other dishes, including smoked turkey and bbq chicken, and all the sides were outstanding.
Wilber's Barbecue (goo.gl/maps/6SKdDphpu1mEhcUH6) Goldsboro, North Carolina - Finally to complete this North Carolina bbq tour, we’re eating at Wilber's Barbecue which is a fantastic family restaurant. Their food and service is fantastic. Also, one bonus about the bbq here is that you can order the leftover or picnic bbq ribs, which are delicious and fun to eat.

Not mexican but had quite a few dinners at my friends house involving mexicans making their own bbq. Someone could make a killing with a Mexican/Eastern NC style bbq restaurant.
As an Eastern NC native, I am proud of this episode. Well researched and some very good restaurants were chosen that are great representatives of our unique style of BBQ. I also appreciated the amount of focus on the sides which are often an afterthought at lower quality establishments. Well done Mark!

Retired Marine who has been all over the country. I've eaten about every type and style of BBQ there is. Its all good in its own way. I've become very fond of the Memphis dry rub style, but NOTHING beats Eastern North Carolina whole hog with scrunchy skin mixed in. The original smoked pork and still my favorite. He finally figured out the proper way to eat smoked pig. Half a fork of BBQ paired with good collard greens. Doesn't get any better. Thank you for posting this.

I am a ENC (Eastern North Carolina) woman. We travel 2hrs to the skylight inn for the barbeque. We by enough to freeze and eat some there also. I love the crunchy skin they chop into the meat.

Georgia boy here, happy to see you enjoying Southern BBQ from our neighbors in NC. I prefer pulled pork over shredded pork, more chew. I would be in heaven with those ribs from Wilber's. What an awesome episode! I'm from ENC & whole hog is definitely a way of life. I live about 8 miles from Ayden...so, the Jones & Dennis families are bbq royalty! Some of the finest swine in the world comes from Pitt, Lenoir, Wayne, & Jones counties. Thanks for shining the light on our food & way of life...kudos!

I love how Mark gives props to small mom and pop restaurants in small towns. I'm a SE VA native and love me some pulled pork bbq with the vinegar and red pepper mix. But with the crunchy skin?? I was never served that. May have to visit them places soon.
In most places you need to ask for skin and most places will bring it if available.

Love the focus on their bar-B-Q styles. NC is so much different than the Texas BBQ I do and was raised on. I also cant help but wonder how much of the friendliness & 'over accommodation' you experience is the result of the camera & free ad & exposure you present from your You-tube channel for most of these establishments. I have lived in the NC area & found mostly normal country folk same as in other states.
Having eaten Eastern Carolina BBQ for over 68 years I can say this was the best review I've had the pleasure to watch and wish I was there. Mark and family are top notch in food reviews. Thanks so much for taking us along on this adventure of Pork BBQ and Sides !!
Nothing like West Tennessee Bbq . Not Memphis at All ,But West Tennessee with the Vinegar baste an toasted hamberger bun has to have slaw with hot suace and PULLED PORK not chopped . The ONLY WAY!!
I’m Eastern NC BBQ girl and yes the vinegar based bbq is the best. There is also a place in NC called Redneck BBQ Lab and their BBQ is awesome! If you come back to NC you would love their food!!

can't believe you made it all the way out to B's BBQ. When I first moved to NC I drove over an hour to get there and yes their chicken cooked over charcoal is legendary stuff. I was able to get there just as they opened. Sad you missed some of the best chicken around

I was born and raised between Ayden and Goldsboro. I totally loved loved loved this episode. I’ve been watching you eat your way around the world for a couple of years. Your facial expressions tell the tale. Of the 5 places you went I don’t know which was the best eating but I can tell you which one was the most appealing to the eyes to me. Skylight Inn looked the most appetizing especially the collards. Thanks for doing eastern North Carolina proud and keep eating your way around the world.

Today was my third time eating Grady’s and I cannot stress how insanely good it is. You can tell it’s made with love and kindness.

It's originated in the Philippines called LECHON BABOY! It's a delicacy there. And it's really a whole hog, from head to tail, grilled using bamboo tree.
Lechon is not the same as ENC bbq sir. Very similar from a crispy skin perspective. I cook both at home. Born and raised NC, but lived in Nor Cal Bay Area for 20 yes. And lechon was my BBQ

This was so great. In 2020 I took my two dogs on a barbecue vacation and hit some of these very same spots. Skylight in is by far my favorite that I had on that trip. I also ventured over into Lexington and of that style Lexington barbecue was hands-down, my favorite. I will never forget my time there, and how much it influenced my own barbecue.

Im a native New Yorker from Bensonhurst Brooklyn born and raised 🇮🇹💯% I've been to skylight inn twice and sam jones(the owner) comes up to nyc for the big 🍎 block party every year so ive had his pork there 5 times the whole hog bbq they make really is on another level from anywhere else that I've tried when it comes to pork

I've been to all of these places except Bum's (making plans now, though) and they're all excellent. I'm glad to see you did the cornbread, barbecue, and cole slaw stack at Skylight. The first time I visited B's I was struck by how fresh that cole slaw was, the cabbage still so peppery. They were just as friendly at Grady's when I visited so what you see is totally real. I need to try Wilber's again as I visited before the current owners.
