4 years later and your trick worked perfect. I didn't have to drop anything I just used the needle nose pliers like you said and pulled the spring off my Troybilt Mustang XP 50inch tensioner pully and all I had to do is just easily put the upper drive belt where it belonged. Then using the same needle nose pliers pulled the spring back on to its attachment and voila it worked perfectly! Thanks for the video....took me about 5 mins though maybe 6 :-)
Dude..... good explanation! You weren't rambling, you were actually sharing a few observations that I didn't make and saved me some headaches and a LOT of time!!! THANK YOU FOR POSTING!!!
I just had to replace the drive belt. The tensioner pulley bracket was also bent, so by taking the bracket off, I unknowingly discovered your method. If you take the tensioner mechanism off, I would suggest taking a picture of how it sits first. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the help. I have a Toro MX5060 and the pulleys are close to the frame. I used your technique... It took me less than an hour to get the belt back on. You saved me time and money... Thanks.
This is great for some, however the clutch break on my Mustang is a tight fit and won't allow the belt up to the top pully. You have to drop the clutch far enough to get the belt past it. The spark plug/rope in the hole trick is needed to hold the engine from turning if removing the lower clutch bolt with a breaker bar(I've done this), an impact wrench is faster and easier, no rope. The string on the spring is to pull the spring without pliers. I can tell you have not done this yourself, it takes 5-10 minutes to just unthread and thread a new belt, let alone all the prep work.
very helpful....Im getting ready to replace my drive belt. also my drive belt came off years ago and it was a real pain to get the pully spring reattached. Thanks
You seem to be talking about the belt for the blades and not the actual drive belt which is located above the clutch mechanism. I have found that you do have to remove the round clutch in order to put on a new drive belt.
Most similar Troy Bilt mustangs have a bracket on the back of the electric clutch that yours doesn't have. That's why they have to loosen and drop that clutch to get the belt over it. The rope in the cylinder trick is to stop the piston from traveling all the way up, so you can turn the bottom bolt on the clutch without rotating the engine.
Thanks Brandon. I just replaced the drive belt on my Troy Bilt Mustang with the tip you shared. Very useful, not 3 min job but a lot simpler than fewer parts to take out! This is a very good share.
i have a troy built zero turn 50 inch mustang brought in 2011 last year i brought six deck belt this year i brought one and it broke i only mower one yard with a new belt and it broke what could keep breaking the belt
Thank you so much for your time. This saved my friend a ton of time and money. We set it onto its right side with the gas tank up. You just have to make sure that you have something strong to prop it up. Also when placing the machine back to level, its good to wait a little for the engine oil to settle before starting the engine. :) God bless
Personally, I am not seeing how you got the belt around the clutch without having to take the whole thing a part. I took the mower belt off as you suggested, but then the clutch has some sort of stopping mechanism that the belt will not go around to get to the right pulley. Frustrated as hell with this.
you have to drop the whole thing .. this guy do t know what he talking about because he didnt even try it.. i bet he found out after he uploaded the video the misake he made
You have to drop The clutch to replace the drive belt. The bracket stops keep you from putting a new one on. The reason you Put a rope if the spark plug hole is so you can loosen/break the clutch bolt without having to hold the flywheel Bolt.
I have to replace mine, I'll follow your advice. I have a Dixon ztr 50 does anyone know what size is it, so I can order it? Tia appreciate it! God bless you.
Wrap a stout cord around the end of that spring, then run the cord through the hole in the frame almost directly behind the spring. The spring is then easy to remove. Getting it back in is tougher as the cord won't quite line up, but still easier and far safer than using pliers on the spring.
The Night Life I used a big regular screwdriver and a ice pick was a bitch took about 2 minutes but working fine now better than disassembled mower engine all over with a rope in the spark plug hole 🕳 wtf is that I left that fool a nasty message waisted time and probably money
Not sure what type of clutch or system i have, but a Cub Cadet RZT50 and this worked perfectly. Others told me i had to remove the cover to the motor, bolts, etc., and this took about 10 minutes in the yard. Life saver!!!
Brent McCollum glad it helped you out brent . i had to post the vid to help others out after researching for a video on this thinking it was going to be a lengthy long job when in fact its not that bad
Brent, your Cub Cadet is made by MTD. So is a Troybilt Mustang RZT and a few others. They are almost identical just different paint and a few minor parts like the handles.
Hey so glad I found you, I work on my lawn mower myself, so how did you get the spring back up there was it hard to pull will I need help lol, also I have a question for you, the hydo gear or whatever that is behind the tires they have a small black hose coming from them, I googled and looked and looked and all I could find was it was called a spitter, does the other end of the hose go in a hole that just is open to the ground in other words, is it just connected at the top? I need help, I sure hope so.. by the way my belt was hung up on something above and it was shredded but not broke thats why it is worrying me about the black hose, first time ive mowed since i noticed that hose..plz help, you are so down to earth kind of person, thanks for the great video, oh plus mine is in the yard way away from the house rear end down hill :(
This was the 3rd video I found on RUclips to address this fix. The first showed some dentally challenged individual playing some kind of a character with a fake parrot, the 2nd was a 3 part series. In each case they were literally taking the mower apart to replace the drive belt. This video was so simple, required removing nothing save the pulley spring and worked perfectly. It took longer to get the back end of my RZT 50 in the air and re-connect the spring than it did to actually replace the cable, follow this video for an easy fix! On a side note, save yourself the trouble of going online or to Home Depot or Lowes for the belt. After doing all that and ending up with a belt that didn't fit, I went to my local Ace Hardware where they measured the belt and sold me a perfect fit for $10. Lowes sold me one for $35 that said online it was the drive belt, it turned out to be the blade belt which is much longer. Brandon, you saved my bacon, great video!
For all who are looking around to replace the Drive belt for the Mustang with the electric drive clutch this video won't work. There is a tab that keeps the clutch from moving. That tab can be bent really easy and bent back in place. No need to to pull spark plug or any other garbage. Maybe 10 minutes tops. Pliers for bending metal and a small crowbar to wedge tension pulley and you are back in business
For the life of me I can't get the spring loose! It's so tight the needle nose keep slipping off. Where in southern ky are you? I'm in BG. You seem familiar for some reason...
@@brandonsouthernky are you still in the Bowling Green Ky area I live off of porter pike on bethel lane. There used to be a lawn mower repair shop here. I am trying to do this right now, but this video is pointing at the deck/blade belt and not the drive belt. On the Mustang you have to drop the clutch to hook the new belt in the right spot which is above where you are referring to. If anyone can give a hint on this it would be great - I am having a heck of a time removing the clutch mounting nut.
Mary I know this is 2 years late but just to answer your question for future readers, this video was made by a person that has no idea what he's talking about. He called a few people idiots or stupid and yet clearly has no idea what he's doing. In order to replace the drive belt you must unhook the spring as he correctly states, but this does not answer the question how to replace the drive belt which he avoided. To replace the drive belt you must unloosen the clutch nut under the drive pulley. You don't need to remove it all the way, merely unloosen it until the drive pulley drops far enough where you can squeeze the drive belt into place. To unloosen the drive bolt you will need a very heavy duty ratchet set, and take a long pipe for leverage on that ratchet and it will be hard to start turning the drive nut to loosen it. After that just loosen it easy without the pipe until its far down enough to fit the drive belt into its place on the pulley.
Electronic refers to solid state devices of typically low voltage low amperage current. Electric is a term used for both circuits that use electricity and also for circuits that are of higher voltage or current of about 10 amps or more. All electronic circuits are electric circuits, but not all electric circuits are electronic circuits. The power part of your mower is 12 volts but has amperage spikes of up to 60 amps so this circuit part of your mower is an electric circuit. To answer your question the solenoid that operates the clutch is an electric circuit because it operates with a 12 volt solenoid that can handle about 20 amps of current.

This DOES work- it’s not 3 minutes, more like an hour but I have a Troy-Bilt Mustang RZT 50. I just completed it and everything is fine- no clutch removal , nothing to do with the spark plug- and yes this is the drive belt not the deck belt. The drive belt is a real pain to get back on- getting it through the guard below the rear clutch- you may need to pry on it a little as you force the belt through. If you can turn it in it’s right side- put the belt over the rear pulley and the front left pulley. You will then have to use whatever you have to get the belt started over the front right pulley and then force the pulley to turn as the belt slips on- helps to reach back on the belt an pull it as you force the pulley to turn. Sucks, but its a lot better than removing the clutch
Merely unloosen the drive pulley nut until it drops low enough to squeeze the new drive belt on. You don't need to remove it entirely, just loosen it until you can fit the belt on. this video /process DOES NOT WORK for a transmission drive belt WITH an electronic CLUTCH. the "rope in spark plug hole trick" is for RZT mustang units with electric clutch... because you cant get the drive belt past the steel 'stop" slot to slide the belt over the deck drive pulley. he also does not show having to disconnect the wire that goes to the electronic clutch.

The rope is to hold the cylinder in place while you back the bolt out of the clutch.
The rope prevents the piston from reaching top dead centre and won't allow the crankshaft to turn. The rope won't damage the internal of the engine.
