great video, straight to it, just subscribed. Bought JD Z245 same problem, liked it so much honest guy told me the problem, bought it anyway. never had a deere, not sure normal sound of steering, both sides seem to whine & seem slower and slightly stiffer to push than others i've ran, left side really bad and when hot completely quits pulling, especially on any grade at all. are JD parts similar to this cub cadet? What would your advise be on what the problem is? Thinking same as this cadet? also wondering if somebody put hydraulic instead of 20-50? but even if so it still has a problem. worked on my own equipment farming all my life but never a zero turn. sure helps with your videos. Thanks a bunch!

Just wanted to thank you for posting your video on hydro gear repair. I followed your recommendation and sanded the pumps and pump base housing with 400 grit stepping up to 2000grit. Your procedure was spot on…my weak left hydro gear (cub cadet ZTR LX50) works perfectly. I mow around 3 acres, hills and wooded and this zero turn mower performed flawlessly for 2.5 hours. Thanks again!

This has worked great so far with my Troy Bilt ZT that had a weak left side hydro. It would whine and worsen as it got warmed up anywhere between 25-40 mins. Sanded it with 1000 and 2000 grit block, cleaned everything up, and now i swear it almost feels a little more powerful than the right side. Tracks straight and even again. Well worth the effort especially If the only other option is a new center section or complete unit. THANK YOU!!

Thanks for posting, I was able to repair my Hustler Sport left side trans and saved myself about $1300.00. One thing I did notice that the unit took about 20 minutes or so to re-prime before it would work. Had me worried there for a moment. Works good as new and does not make the whining noise when engaged.

My left one was the weak one, but I did this repair to both of my transmissions. Purged them both and the left one worked great with the wheel off the ground but won't move when on the ground. The right one works great. I pulled the left back apart and resanded because I saw some faint scratches with a Magnifying Glass. Purged it worked great with tire off of the ground, but won't move with it on the ground. It tries to move, so looks like I will have to buy a new Center Section for that side. Hate that it didn't work for that side.

Thank you for the video. This video really clear up how hydrostatic transmissions can fail with no super obvious defect. These pumps and motors are wearing at their merry-go-round sealing surfaces or maybe gouge is a better term causing them to not be able to maintain high hydraulic pressure needed for producing torque. They make use of highly critical tight tolerances to maintain high seal pressure and just a little gap in the thousands of an inch will bleed off the high pressure they need for producing torque. I think its a bit analogous to piston rings, but its a rotating assembly. Piston rings are expected to allow a certain amount of blow-by so this sealing environment is actually more difficult to manage. I'm surprised such a system can maintain a seal. The high pressure is forcing it apart and it might be likely to want to oscillate up and down. That might be what the sequel noise comes from as the breed through areas quickly changes shape varying the amount of oil that breeds through.
My father got a Gravely zero turn mower in 2004 and I was the person that ended up using it. From the start the mower made squealing noises and one hydro transmission side got weaker and weaker. When it got hot one side would only have about half the power of the other side. You could still use the mower by biasing how much handle was applied. I'd change the oil in the hydro drives and one side would have oil that gotten a green color in it, like grass green. The other side oil would appear dirty maybe a little green tint to it. The hydro transmissions would run a lot better for a while after changing the oil in them.
I think I flushed out the oil a few times to where the oil wouldn't turn green right away. I was very frustrating and I was investigating online what might be the cause of this behavior. There was really no information available 2004 - 7, even though hydro static transmissions had been in professional lawn care for a good number of years. My guess was the problem was likely relatively simple and cheap to fix if somebody wanted to go to the bother. I finally got a diagram and basic understanding of how these hydro static transmissions work and really there didn't seem to be any clear area they could go bad in that wasn't due cataclysmic failure. Obviously if the pump or motor case were to crack or the pistons were to crack or break or springs break that would be a means of failure, but if it were due to single piston cylinder it would seem the problem would be cyclic pulse and noise and that wasn't present. I just couldn't see how the mechanism could be failing in the way it was.
That mower had been taken in for warranty work a numbers times for other matters and the dealer obviously didn't want to do anything on the transmissions. I think the transmissions were suppose to be non serviceable. To change the oil I'd use a suction pump through the vent hole. I the method left a bit of oil in the transmission, but not much and the oil was changed numerous times to flush the system out. There were lots of upgrade fixes for that mower and it got all of them according to the dealer.
After about 2 1/2 years my dad had gotten tired of fooling around with this Gravely and got a Toro zero turn. We sold the Gravely for $500. It also was very hard to start sometimes just barely turning over and in cold weather it wouldn't. I fixed that by replacing the small tractor battery with a regular group 24 car battery. I'd recommend always replacing a lawn tractor battery with a 'real' battery. They last much longer and start the tractor much better and can be used to jump start other vehicles. The Gravely had room for group 24 battery under the seat. There was very little clean up that had to be done to place it.
With the hydro transmissions flushed out with new Amsoil synthetic 60W oil in them the mower still didn't want to go up the large hill in the backyard, but that hill was due to a it being a dam. Many years later a lawn care person mowing this lawn told me we had the most difficult to cut lawn in the area with that steep hill. The synthetic 60W oil greatly reduced power loss due to heat and it seemed to stand up to whatever the transmission had been doing to destroy the other oils I'd put into it. The person that purchased the mower seemed to just want to play around with zero turn mower and on the flat its problems were greatly reduced. For $500 in 2007 a person really couldn't have access for zero turn mower to play around with so I hope and maybe it did work out for him. I spent more time figuring out that Gravely mower than I'd ever spent on lawn equipment in the past. I'd expected to spend more time on it being I'd only had experience with walk behind mowers before and riding mowers were notorious high maintenance machines, but this was likely restoring an old abused sports car and it was suppose to be new. I wonder about that.
The Toro seemed to have many of the same transmission components and such as the large single cylinder Briggs engine, but with a small three bladed deck instead of the two bladed deck of the Gravely. Everything on the Toro worked better from the start even though all the components were driving a considerably bigger mower than the Gravely. The Briggs large single cylinder on the Gravely seemed to be at the bottom of Briggs engine trim level; whereas, Briggs large single cylinder on the Toro seemed to be above the highest trim levels available from Briggs with a special Toro muffler. Even though the Toro had almost the same Briggs engine as the Gravely I noticed in cutting the same lawn it seems to use only about 2/3 the gasoline the Gravely did.

  • @vincemajestyk9497

The Toro is actually called the Timecutter. BTW, those 2 Permatex products aren't meant to be used together because of their different formulations. You should use one or the other not both, actually the 'Right Stuff' or Hylomar would be the proper product. That aviation stuff doesn't set up like the silicone and might leak with right stuff on top of it.

Some of the units do have external filters. The zt2800 and up have external filters. Its inevitable for this to happen because it will wear over time regardless of maintenance but changing your oil, if you can, once a year will prolong the life.

I've got a zt2800 that the oil filter stud is stripped out bad. It can't be rethreaded. What would have to be done to replace the oil filter stud?

Are the drives the same as in the Grasshopper 725? I have a Cub Cadet Z-force L and the 725 Grasshopper, and both have the left drives that are weak when they are warm.
The Cub probably has the same drive as this. The Grasshopper has filters on each drive on the top. It has the 3 cyl liquid cooled gas engine.
    Thanks for posting this.
    Smiles!

@doublewide6 Repairs LLC Thanks for the video. I think I'm comfortable tearing into my Gravely ZT 2048 hydros. The right is the worst, but I think I should look at the pair while I'm in there I guess... Any advice on this model zero turn? I'm a very handy guy, I just haven't done this before. Thanks in advance for your help!! TY TY TY!!!

Hey Double Wide Excellent work. Replacement of individual units are a ton of money. I’m not a big fan of these Cub Cadets. The decks are too flimsy. Have you done any of this on commercial units like BobCat.
