You're the ONLY video I could find that talks about hatchlings NOT basking very much. We rescued a Yellow slider baby and he rarely basks. But, using common sense, my husband and I figured he was hiding and staying under water to prevent us from eating him. Because we're predators....LOL or so he thinks. Great video! Thanks!
Great video! My adult Belize slider stopped basking when I brought him back indoors so I’ve been dry docking him and it definitely helps his shell return to normal!
i have had my turtles hatching for 2 months and they just started basking in front of me......i found out they were basking only when i was gone....i caught them...
Great advice there! I just changed my 4 y.o RES basking platform from those plastic suction cups ones to an on top of tank topper...n it wouldn't want to bask for 3 days..and I was getting worried..now I know its just normal behaviour..and I like the tip where u said place the lamp facing the ramp..good idea there. 💡
Certain breeds bask more then others ie sliders, painteds, maps and cooters. Terrapins arnt everyday baskers from what I have seen and maps are super shy where they will jump back in water before you can se them
As someone with a pond and multiple species, you can observe more naturalistic behaviors for sure, so I value your input tremendously! This is definitely true.
@@DanTheTurtleMan_ you keep on making awesome videos man your doing a great job!!!! I would of made like a thousand carol baskin turtle baskin jokes that would of been terrible so I envy your self control.
I can totally agree with that, i have been keeping turtle for 2 years now. I had keep Red Eared Slider, Yellow Belly Slider, RES x Yellow Belly hybrid, Emydura Subglobosa (Pink Belly side neck) and the last one is Ouchita Map (bought it 2 days ago). From what i can observe only Emydura have the least basking habit, they spent 99% of their time in the water. Now i only have ±7 inch RES and ±4 inch Emydura in 130 gallon outdoor pond. My new baby Ouchita Map doesn't seem shy at all, it literally able to eat food from my hand like after 12 hours i got it 🤣.
A few weeks ago I moved my 2 painted turtles outside to the 100 gallon where my red ear slider lives. I was getting worried about my boy since he never gets up to bask outside. When he was inside he was always basking. But finally seen him up with the other 2 girls yesterday for the first time.
Thanks was a lil worry cuz my turtle hasn’t bask n like 1 week n a half but I change water every week have filter n calcium blocks n repto guard blocks n the water heat lamp n uvb etc this vid help not so worry now thanks again
Hay Dan! Great video. Learned interesting stuff. Now certain things make sense. We had a painted nw turtle who was born in captivity then was in the wild for few months. Coming to cared for captivity from a very rough shape, since it was the city and dirty small ponds in parks. She was recovered from that and was happy and eating and rarely basking, when an oversight while she was enjoying nature had her runaway. Now she is gone and we worry for our loved ones. She is in auch more natural environment with big ponds and tons of food and mud to dig into and sleep during the hard winter. But having that captive background, can she survive and mate and be okay? Or is she in turtle heaven already after 4 months?
Great video, I have 2 baby eastern long necks, I live in Australia. Anyway I was wondering if they had soft shell since their shells are a lot softer than my juvenile and I don’t see them bask regularly, but I keep their water extremely clean and warm. I was also considering moving them to the pond since it’s more quiet than inside.
I got an Overhead basking area and the turtles won’t go up to bask i see them on the ramp but never actually see them basking before with the in tank basking area they would bask idk if its because they cant climb up or what
Hi, I am getting a red eared slider October 21 Wednesday (maybe) and I have been watching your videos to help me through the way. Thank you. I am going to name him Master Oogway (from Kung Fu Panda).
Hi Dan! I have a question about my 7 month old terrapin, Rizzo. About a week ago, I noticed she had these brownish white patches of skin on her arms, and the next day, it spread to the top of her head. A few days later, I saw it on her feet. It started shedding, too. I panicked, and found a video on what it was, by a channel called Turt Du. The same thing was happening to his terrapin. I know that you have a lot of terrapins, so I thought you might have seen this before, or know what it is. I started a treatment from the Turt Du video, where I put on iodine and anti-fungal cream, then dry dock the turtle for 2 or more hours. Sadly, I have done it for 4 days, and I haven't seen any improvement. I actually noticed more on one of her feet yesterday. What should I do? I have been looking into reptile vets near me, but there are none, only for dogs and cats.
I am almost done with the treatment for today, and she did get some of the skin off of her head and arm, but there is more of the bad skin underneath it. Please reply as soon as possible, because I am going on a vacation this Saturday, so I cannot wait until after it to treat her. Thanks again Dan!
My turtle is a Murray river long neck he was born in February his name is jiggles I got him yesterday so he hasn’t really basked yet may it be because he is new to the invioment
Hey DanTheGuppyMan can you tell me how to get you turtle to eat some pellets because my red eared slider who is 3 years old. He is eating bloodworms and frozen fish. I've tried all kinds of ways to make him eat them. I've tried to get a variety of pellet, like all of the ones in the pet store near me. What should I do?
Dan or anyone else that wants to weigh in, my big girl RES, Olivia, has learned to what I think throw temper tantrums! If she doesn’t get her fill of tiny dried shrimp she will start biting off chunks of her dock. I don’t know how much if any she’s ingested as there’s so much floating. She’s getting to the point of ignoring her regular food and only inhaling the shrimp. I know that’s too much protein, so any suggestions? Or does anyone have any reading materials on how to handle an 12” lady that doesn’t want to behave? 😂 Many thanks fellow turtle nerds 💚🐢💚
Try waterweed first, all of my RES have gone crazy about it even when they were babies. It is pretty frequent in pet stores, you can also grow it in a separate tank, but not that rate as your turtle eats it, if it will be her regular veggie. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egeria_densa Mines also love cherry, grapes and cooked corn, but those you should feed those occasionally maybe once or twice a month, because those are full of sugar and corn maybe can suffocate a smaller one. Carrot and tomato was first problematic, but they used to those. For carrot and greens I used the trick to cook those in chicken soup, and they started to like it, then I gave them raw carrots and they continued to eat it.They really hate lettuce and greenies, but they will eat it, if there is nothing else. Just leave the stuff in their tank they will eat it sooner or later. As for the meaty stuff I generally give them whole fish, I guess it is the most healthy meat for them, shrimp, boiled and fried egg, rarely beef or chicken. The more varied their diet is the more likely they will accept new things.
@@gaborrajnai6213 did you give the yolk of boiled egg or just the white one ? I read that chicken egg yolk have high fat and it just messy because it break apart so easily. I do give my RES and Emydura Subglobosa a chicken egg too, but i scrambled them (without using oil) because i hate messy yolk of boiled egg.
@@RioCahyadiDrayka Yes, I also give them only scrambled eggs, if I wanna feed them with yolk. It is full of D vitamin A vitamin, also unfortunately fat and phosphorous. For baby turtles those are the most important vitamins, but they can get those from whole fish as well. For boiled eggs yes I give them eggwhite, that mainly is just protein, but it is less phosphorous than lets say shrimp or yolk.
@@gaborrajnai6213 haha... We both have similar feeding way 😁. When i make a scrambled egg for them, my mom tilted her head and confused 😅. Sometimes i do put a cuttlebone powder or spirulina powder in the scrambled egg too, just to boost the nutrients (i call that Scrambled Egg Deluxe version 🤣).
