Mountain Biking with Phil Kmetz in North Carolina - RWS EP13

  • It's safe to say that Phil and I are the nerdiest mountain bikers on RUclips, so whenever we're in each others' neighborhoods we make it a point to link up. I was in Asheville for the day, and had 6 hours to get to a trail, ride it, and get back to town. Phil was up for it, and met me out there!
    Phil's Raleigh Tokul Video: • Raleigh Tokul 3 Tortur...
    Transcript:
    Welcome to riding with Seth. Today, we’ll venture into the forest for a morning ride in North Carolina. I was up there for some reasons I can’t discuss right now, and had just Saturday morning to do some riding. Just a few hours in one of the best riding destinations on the East Coast. That’s kind of like torture, but I decided to make it count.
    Some of you might recognize this Raleigh Tokul.
    Phil and I talked a bit while climbing, but I was wondering how I’d fare against him on the descent. After all, Phil is a professional downhill racer, but on a relatively low end hardtail he was at a disadvantage. All I needed to do was follow his line, right?
    So Phill smoked me on the downhill, but that wasn’t surprising. As I’ve preached before, the bike does not make the rider. We started climbing a different route, but this time I’d lead us down.
    Any of you guys use the new GoPro app that makes you log in just to use it. End Rant.
    In looking at the footage, the trail was obviously to the left.
    Maybe I have trouble seeing things from a hiker’s perspective, but sitting in the middle of a steep and narrow section of multi use trail seems like a bad idea. Still we weren’t even close to hitting these hikers. The battle continues.
    So much for taking it easy on my shoulder.
    Anyway, that’s it for this very short morning ride. I’ll be back up to the Asheville metro area a few more times this winter. Hopefully next time it won’t be so rushed. If you want to know the back story on the bike Phil was riding check the description for links. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time.

      that trail didn't even require a front suspension let alone full sus. A rigid fork would've rocked it easy.

      On my local trails there are parts where footpaths and the mtb trail cross over and the walkers have right of way, even though it doesn't take a genius to work out its much easier and safer for a walker to slow down and give way than a mountain biker 🤔🤦

    That is something I always hate; when you run into hikers on the trails that have no concept of MTB (They probably call it off-road cycling) They look at you like you are just some crazy dude bombing down a mountain with no safety concern for yourself of them. It probably is partially true, but hikers need to understand that it's dangerous for them to not to be on a constant lookout for bikers. It is much harder to stop a bike going 30km/h down loose rock and dirt then for a hiker to step aside. After all it is a multi-use trail.

      @@hardtailrider350 I also agree. In the past I have met some hikers who wanted to tell me the trail is only for hikers but that was not true! And they have nothing more to do than chat an ear to my knee.

    The thing with hiking/hikers is that they kind of forget where they are and just how fast bikes can go down trails.
    We also get a lot of hikers on bike-only trails near me. Man it's annoying.

      @ratsac 7 лет назад +1

      Moose yeah I'm in Australia too. Brisbane. Not much you can say without sounding like a dick. I just ask them to stay safe as nobody is expecting walkers (or actually trail runners).

    • @AwsomeVids83
      @AwsomeVids83 7 лет назад +14

      tinnedspicedham Once when i was hitting the dirt jump place near my house there were 3 people, a mother, father and a kid who had set up their picnic in the gap of a very big jump. That jump was too big for me, but my friend went flying over it and over the people, and they had a dang fit! The guy was threatening to call the cops, the mom was screaming, and the kid was just standing there like "what's the big deal?"
      People's stupidity is boundless.

    Phil is a natural athlete that has chosen bikes for his sport--You're 100% correct Seth regarding the bike as opposed to the rider.
    I used to ride road bikes a lot in NY and even though a 10 grand bike might be beautiful to look at the important thing is rider conditioning not having a 12 pound bike, all things being equal naturally the lightest and most aero has the advantage but not necessary to spend 10++ grand when someone is a non conditioned rider--
    I live in NC now and have switched over to trail riding, green and blue trails. I was at Dupont over the summer when it was about 90 and humid, last week I was at Lake Norman, not much of a challenge for you guys but I am 64 and only been riding full suspension for 1 year. I have a 2018 Spectral 6.0 AL and upgraded to 2019 Mavic XA carbon wheels and Fizik M-1 seat, also dropped in some semi metallic brake pads, big difference made there, as Alex has proven with his former Spectral it does more than hold its own, wondering how the Strive compares? STAY SAFE

    I completely agree with what was said at the end of the video. Dressing correctly for the colder weather makes it so you can't really tell its cold after the first 5-10 mins of warming up and riding in the snow and ice does completely change things. You also get to see views you never could any other time of year. If your ever in Nova Scotia, Canada in the winter months I'd be happy to take you out for some good Fat Bike riding.

    Atleast you made the horn sound to alert the hikers, haha. BTW I like your perspective better, I really starting to hate the gimbal, it's boring sometimes.

    If you ever get the chance, come ride in the Kettle Moraine forest in southern Wisconsin. The John Muir trailhead leads to dozens of miles of amazing singletrack with varied terrain, from fast and flowing hard pack to technical climbs and descents, switchbacks, sand, rocks, tack, ect.

    As for the hikers, I bet if your brakes didn't squeal like a pig it would have been no big deal. For some reason any loud noise seems to make hikers think you are out of control.

    • @GeddyRC
      @GeddyRC 7 лет назад +4

      Was thinking the same thing. That awful squeal just creates panic when you're headed towards people. Mountain bikes can stop on the dime, that guy was just being a douche.

    Great video as usual man, looks like the hikers were boy scouts. I doubt they knew about trails, and usage, you had lots of room anyway. Digging the music big time it was a great pairing.

    I'm totally with ya on the GoPro app. It's just annoying. Plus it seems I run into that issue after I've put my gloves on. I already have to hit the home button on the iPhone 7 with my lip so I can unlock it. On another note, I've been noticing some small pans on some of your shots. Do you have something that is moving the camera or are you doing it with software and just changing the zoom from over 100% down?

    Wow some beautiful trails. Cant believe the trees still holding leaves up there. Some of them definitely look like pawpaws, if you had been there in august/september you couldve grabbed a very interesting fruit or 12.

    Seth, I have a cool video idea for beginners like me. You should make a video explaining everything about gear switching. This will include the mechanics of it and when the rider should switch gears to maintain momentum. This will be followed up with examples of you riding up a hill and descending. Thanks !

    The angry hiker's accent made it way funnier. Sometimes I think hikers get in the way on purpose just so they can get pissed at mountain bikers. They act like it's not a multi-use trail and we're just riding illegally.
