Berm Park has a new FLOW TRAIL, and it's INCREDIBLE!

  • Berm Park has NEW TRAILS! Well, Chestnut Mountain Park does... and the first installment of these bigger 'backcountry trails' as they are calling them is Ladybird, a blue flow trail with about 800 ft of descending that leaves from the Berm Park area and brings you right back. I've been hearing some great things about this trail, so today my friend Nate and I are out to try this ourselves, and I'll tell ya what.... I'll be back to ride this one many more times!

Alex, thanks for recognizing Canton! If you didn't know, it was recently announced that Canton's paper mill will be closing in June, a major blow to the local economy. I'm a local and I have met many visitors while riding at Berm/Chestnut and we love to have all of y'all visiting. I'd encourage those of you with time to take the two minute drive up the road from the park into downtown. Canton offers great cafes, a coffee shop, bookstore and a brewery with seating along the river. With the paper mills closing, the continued growth of the park and mountain bike tourism will be vital to the town's survival.

I rode Berm Park last season with my brother on the way back home from a weekend trip to Pisgah/Dupont. Such a fun spot and well-maintained. Grateful for towns like Canton making this possible. My brother and I had lunch in town before heading home. Worth noting I'm not local in any sense of the word...drove 14 hours from Buffalo, NY. I love riding in WNC and can't wait to check out Ladybird.

Really looking forward to riding the new trails!
With that said, I had about the same experience climbing up to Lady Bird. Was super easy at first but the last half mile was a challenge. Took this old slow guy about 30 minutes to get there from the parking lot with one stop, so if you haven't done alot of climbing, get some done before you go so you don't bonk on the way up and have nothing in the tank to get back down! 🤪👍

I'm not sure that my bike is capable to take all of those trails with my skill level so if you have rental bikes available that would be something I would spend money on. When I do eventually get the time and resources to go I will not be coming alone; I will be bringing it at least two friends hopefully more than that.

I've been considering a move somewhere. Was born and raised in the Seattle area. And while we have some amazing nature for hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, kayaking, you name it. I think I've explored this beautiful area enough.
Now that MTB has become such a big part of my life, moving would definitely have to take that into consideration. I do have some family from North Carolina. Mostly around the Asheville area. It does seem like it has some awesome wooden areas to explore.
Has anyone ever lived in both the PNW and NC to compare the two? Of course there's plenty of other places to move to. But I've visited NC a few times and really enjoyed the vibes. It's pretty awesome having something like Outer Banks being a day trip away as well.
It's time to switch some things up in life soon and this channel combined with Seth's has really illuminated just how rad the trails over there are.

Here in Seattle we have an amazing bike park called Duthie Hill. There's tons of beginner/XC trails, combined with pro jump lines with huge doubles and wood features and everything in-between.
It's basically been my MTB training ground and it's amazing for progression. Most trails lead to a central clearing area with picnic tables, tools and a bike stand to fix your bike. I know Seth has a video featuring it. Berm Park seems like a very similar vibe. It's just such a great idea for people to progress at a place like this. It doesn't really matter your skill level, there is something for everyone to have fun on.

About Motor Racing tracks vs. Mountain Biking trails. I guess Mountain biking tourism is just more economically sustainable. In that it brings a constant number of visitors all season providing continous income whereas Motor Racing events attract huge crowds for just a few weekends. All the infrastructure and accomodation will have to be designed for this large nmuber of people only to be vacant and create costs for the rest of the year. Also, of course you're kind of at the mercy of event organizers.

Was actually really fun and not as bad as we thought. Didn't take it fast, but was fun to experience all the stuff. (it didn't have any insane jumps or drops or anything). Just thought it was interesting to hear him say that the rock garden was there to deter beginners. haha. I think it would be a nice little challenge towards the beginning as opposed to a deterrent.

9:30 what he’s talking about is so true. As much as I love my state parks that I ride, trails that are owned by a person or business and not government related will be better 9/10 times. The state parks have some sick features, but they seem kinda thrown together at times, and lack lots of maintenance. But the places that are built and kept by people almost always outmatch the gov parks. Maybe that’s just the area I’m at because it’s not a huge sport in most places in jersey, but it goes for many other sports as well, businesses run better because of the passion they have.

I was on vacation in Candler, NC for a week last week. It seems chestnut mountian closes their operation at the hint of a first raindrop and keep it closed for days to dry out. The only days the park was open were the 2 days we had ticketable events/attractions we were attending. I wanted to do the survey for the economic impact of the park system there since we drove from Florida to hike/bike in Western NC. I want them to know people from several states away are coming to the area and hope they keep developing the park further but they only provide the QR code on signage in the park only. Since it was closed all the days we had the free time to hike/bike, never got to participate.
Heres hoping to get another chance to check it out one day. But dupont was my favorite place to ride. So much variability for endless fun.

I went over the bars in March on the crest at 15:07 before the downhill right turn. I see Nate almost had some trouble there too! My first big crash and I scratched up both arms and a leg pretty good. My bike would still be falling down the mountain had it not caught a vine on the tree on the inside.
