I always took this song as a life lived out of step. He wants so bad to be in the crowd but everything he says and tries reflects poorly and he lies awake at night doing the what if game of maybe I should have said this or that etc. Truly one of the saddest songs ever recorded and done to haunting perfection .

Robin maybe shy and eccentric but his inteligent. The train accident that he and his girlfriend experienced, has given him psychological trauma. Robin said that accidents sometimes appeared in his dream. This maybe the reason why he gothooked on pills in his early twenty's. Another reason was his separation from his first wife.Good that he met a woman that understands and accept his behaviour, eccentricity and help him change his att it tude. Robin becomes a well-rounded person when he met Dwina. He learned how smile and mingle with others

HarriBest Music Reaction - If you look at the original video, (which is quite surreal and worth a look) it is full of funhouse mirrors and weird cutouts with Robin wandering through them. To me the video and the song is about how we see ourselves and how others see us and how we've effected others. Is our impression of ourselves and others' impressions of us real or distorted like in a funhouse mirror? Robin was always a loner and it seemed to me he was insecure about how others viewed him. His sister said he was shy and always had a very hard time communicating with people and felt misunderstood so for that reason he felt they disliked him. To me the song is about someone who does NOT feel in control but feels isolated. This song always got him a standing ovation and he sang it so emotionally. He requested this song to be played at his funeral so it obviously meant a great deal to him. To me the lyrics are pure Robin. Since he died Barry has done this song at concerts but only sings a few words and switches to a screen with Robin finishing it, again to a standing ovation. Barry acknowledged this song was Robin's trademark. Yes, Robin's voice was haunting!

The three brothers were always better harmonizing in the group than by themselves. It truly was a case where the whole was better than the parts.
Andy Gibb was the true standout. His commercial success was well deserved.
My heart goes out to Barry! He was the oldest and now he is the last of a dynasty. He and Don Everly shared that distinction. Alas, Don passed in August. I do wonder if they would have meshed. Their bands were at the very top of charts and known worldwide for their perfect harmonies. I miss them all.

I agree that Robin's voice was, to me at least, the Bee Gees' trademark. Barry said many mocked and copied his falsetto but nobody tried to copy any of Robin's standards because it was impossible. He was inimitable. Barry was more of the matinee idol type, confident and an effortless PR guy who grabbed the attention while Robin was shy and awkward but talented as hell. I loved Robin's solo albums too. The twins deserved much more attention and with You Tube, they're finally getting it but too late to appreciate it.

This was my favorite song in the 60's. I couldn't tell you what the meaning was for Robin, but to me, it was all about feeling separate from the world, how we are all born alone and die alone and in between we struggle to be understood. I was bullied as a child, so maybe that was something, but even now, as an adult, it strikes every sensitive nerve, and when I listen to it, maybe I don't feel so misunderstood.

I think you come very close to a sensible interp of this song. I always thought it was about Robin during some of his troubled times in the late 1960's-- a self-described misfit at times, who found it hard to open up. There are more ways to "die" than the physical reality, you know? There are more ways that your "death" may have caused others to "live." Robin was an intellectual, meditative intuitive person. Don't you know anyone like him in your life? I do.

I have always loved this song. I grew up in a family of four... mother, father, brother and myself. I was the youngest and I wasn't like any of them so this song resonated with me because no matter what I tried to do, it was never good enough or done in the right way for them. I was the flower child in a family of judgmental and revengeful people. My life was exactly as Robin sang and this song gave me comfort as I was growing up because I felt like I wasn't alone. So happy you reacted to this song, Harri. Take care and be well. Peace.

And Barry had incredible projection in his voice capable of filling out a concert hall

    per songfacts:
Robin Gibb told The Mail On Sunday November 1, 2009: "This is a very spiritual song. The listeners have to interpret it themselves - trying to explain it would detract from the song."
This song is about someone who has done or said something horribly wrong, which resulted in alienating everyone around him.

I remember being about 18 when this came out. I was driving home from work with my Dad and it came on the radio. My father didn't like it, or at least wouldn't admit he did. I loved it then as now, but he was of a different generation and seemed not to get the message. Now as an old man myself i wish i had taken the time to at least try to make him understand, but i didn't. Dad is gone now as he died in 2016 at age 93. I like to think he is sitting up there now with the heavenly father and thinking... Oh, now i get it'. Thanks for playing the great songs and i think this is one of the greatest of all time, but who knows? Maybe there are a million other's out there and i just don't get it.😇😇

This song is about someone who has done or said something horribly wrong, which resulted in alienating everyone around him. It's a great example of lyrical songwriting, and very much a love-it-or-hate-it song. With the opening line, "I started a joke, which started the whole world crying," followed with, "I started to cry, which set the whole world laughing," the song can be heard as achingly poignant or overly sentimental, depending on your mindset.

I guess back then we just loved the melody, music and didn't dissect what the song was about. The artist did, while writing it, but unless the lyrics were clear and the message was clear we just loved the music. There are thousands of examples. I'm rambling but all of these great songs remind you of where you were and what you were doing when you first heard them. That's what keeps them in your memory and heart.

Robin ‘s voice is so unique! He also wrote but the lyrics were cryptic. Robin never would explain the real meaning. Knowing he was a big over thinker, at times a troubled soul when younger, also very spiritual as well. Some say it us about being out of step with the rest of the world. Barry mentioned that some thought it was about religion and Robin replied that he couldn’t remember what he wrote it about(in normal Robin fashion). That last one was from a VH1 program called story tellers ( out on RUclips).

According to Robin, the melancholic melody of the song was inspired by sounds when onboard a British Airways older 4 engine prop jobs flight in 1968. The planes droning type humming began to mysteriously take on the sound like a church choir. After adding the lyrics, Barry said there was a lot psychedelia writing in those days, & if you wrote something & no matter how ridiculous it sounded, that someone would eventually find the meaning of it, which was the truth behind this song.

Robin started the Bee Gees and was the front man and lead singer when the group first started but when their producer started featuring Barry more and more, Robin became disillusioned and "fell out of bed . . hurting his head" and eventually quit the group for 18 months while Robin keep doing his his singles by himself while Barry, Maurice and their sister and a drummer struggle with minor success but both began to realize that they were not near as good as before so "scratching their heads over things that he said" they both came to the conclusion that they were better together than apart then after that as Barry emerged as the groups lead man and Robin faded or "died" that was when the 'whole world started living" and they soared to the top of the music world with 6 number 1 songs!!! Now that's LIVING for sure!!!

Maybe someone who thinks the world is out to get them. Whatever they do, everyone else does the opposite? Beautiful song.

Greatest voice of a generation. Robin Gibb. Incomparable. Play also Black Diamond if you can. Unbelievable! What a blessing he has left us.

It's a good tune, but my favorite BeeGees song of all time was the B side, "Kilburn Towers." I'm not sure why, but that melody has stuck in my mind, and I've never tired of hearing it.

I’ve always liked this song. At the same time it strikes me as one of the saddest tales I’ve ever heard 😢. Bee Gees were so prolific in multiple genres. Their early music was amazing. Great pick Harri🎄🌺✌️

    My penny for this song:
You reap what you sow. Whatever you do, think before you speak and/or act. Because without good preparation and consideration the things that you are going to say and/or do can backfire in horrible way. And once the things are said and done, the realisation kicks in. But it's (nearly always) too late. The damage is done and it's irreversible. Only tears and regrets are left.

Another guess? I think it is the story of youth and feeling like everything he does is wrong. I think as young folks we feel awkward and try to over compensate by acting like we know things we really have no clue about, Eventually though the time catches up with reality and shows us.

Well, all we can do is speculate, but really, I think what he was trying to say, maybe is, with all the things that he thought had mattered, they didn't really matter in the end, once he died, it was over, there was no reason to care about anything anymore, it's like, oh well, never mind, wow, it's like a bad joke was played on me. Yeah, this song really makes you think.
