    So…my lack of singing talent has always been the joke of my family. When I sang around children in the past, my sisters have threatened to call child protective services. Several months ago I started watching Sam’s videos and trying some new things privately. Recently I sang around my sisters and they were shocked that I was actually somewhat in tune. I almost even got a compliment from them! I’m not giving up. Thank you, Sam!

      I think most cases of "bad singers" are people internalizing comments or even insults thrown at them, limiting themselves without realizing it. It's a lot harder to get good at singing (or anything, really) if you think: "I'm a bad singer." It's much easier when you think: "I can be a good singer. It'll just take a bit of time figure out what sounds good."
      Then there are also common misconceptions, which often get stuck in someone's mind, especially if they're self-taught and don't have someone with the knowledge to look at them and point it out, because habits are harder to get rid of the longer this goes on. I think the most common misconception is that singing has to be hard. If your voice is straining, other people can hear that, or at least feel it, even if they don't know exactly why your performance sounds strained. If you're having fun and feel good while singing, people can hear that. The reverse is also true, so I'd say start having fun and try singing differently until it feels good first. Once you have that going, you can still work on more details like technique.

      I actually read an article years ago that ANYONE can be a good singer BUT they have to PRACTICE. It makes so much sense actually. I have the same history, always been a horrible singer and a joke with my friends (one offered me $50 to stop singing with the radio once). I started working at a daycare and HAD to sing simple songs with the kids. My husband was shocked that I wasn't totally horrible anymore! 'Bad' singers don't want to sing around others, good singers do. Add practice with Sam's awesome tips and you have a recipe for success 😉

    Unfortunately his live performance was much longer and heavily edited for TV. His costume was because the performance started with a Kazakh folk song and that is a traditional Kazakh outfit. Some of his concert songs highlight his range better (Love of Tired Swans and Daidadau are my favorites).
    According to his voice teachers and family, because he started voice training so early (4-5 yrs) he was able to retain his pre-pubescent vocal range and has been developing his lower range a bit more slowly.

      Are you sure there is more to his performance? I feel like they don't give anyone a whole lot of time in general, not just air time.

    • @jaydenball5644
      @jaydenball5644 5 лет назад +15

      @@HelTra91 Could be. I heard from rumours online that he announced it in his IG prior to the show was aired that he was going to present a Khazakh song but quickly deleted the post after it was aired. Some also claimed to be present among the audience during the recording and claimed that he sang for a whole six minutes to two songs made into one. Another claim also that his interpreter confirmed it in her tweet. Dimash himself never said anything though.

    • @candidwings5609
      @candidwings5609 5 лет назад +12

      @@HelTra91 in addition to the info posted by Jayden Ball, it explains the use of traditional Kazakh folk instruments in the "beginning" of the song. It also explains why he was the only contestant whose intro video didn't include his reasons for the performsnce he chose (his intro video was very similar to the one used in his first episode). I saw screenshots of the IG post by Dimash and the tweet by his interpreter, and while I understand that those could have been faked, I think the combination of all the information makes it far more likely that his performance was shortened for TV.

    Thank you Sam and Mark for such an knowledgeable and enlightening analysis! There’s been some controversy going around for Dimash’s technical abilities and performances, but I believe that he has a natural talent (backed up by 20 yrs of professional training) as I believe the sky is blue. Yes he can reach the high notes effortlessly but the high notes alone certainly can’t define him. I feel that many people tend to focus on his crazy octaves but overlook his vocal dynamics, breathing technique, sustainability, ease in changing registers, stage persona, and most importantly his influence to the general audience and his fans.
    I truly believe that this man is indefinable. To categorize him to a certain genre or voice type is quite narrow-minded, and he certainly showed us that musicality knows no bound. I think that’s what makes him so exciting and inspiring to watch.

    He's definitely among the most savage vocalists I've ever listened to. I think his usable range is about 4 octaves, probably up to F6 in super head voice, because as I remember he barely phonates from there to the D8 whistle note, which is his highest note. There is a blank range there. Besides, I wish more people will listen to Tom Chang, a Taiwanese pop sopranist who passed away in 1997. I believe he could sing up to A5 in mixed voice (in a live show during which he sang from A4 up to A5 with pretty consistent tonal quality) & D#6 in head voice (in a studio song). Dimash, Vitas & Tom are the three most savage male vocalists I've ever known.

    This is the best vocal coach reaction video I have seen! You mention countertenor which I feel Dimash is one. Also you mentioned the bulging veins in his neck. My first thought was that he was straining but I liked your take on what was going on. Back to classifications, I don't even try to classify myself really but I'd say I am a countertenor as I find my happy singing spot in my head voice. When I was Dimash's age I was a male soprano and also had a 4 octave range. My voice never broke through puberty (and one can see that I don't have much of an adam's apple). Dimash has one and it completely amazes that he can muster those high tones. I wish I had been trained to get to my whistle notes, would have been interesting!

    Dimash has been classically trained since he was 5 years old. He was offered a position in a Kazakh Opera Theatre but declined as he wanted to explore his voice range.

    Okay, so I love all of your videos but you said something in this one that hit me personally. When I was in high school, I sang a lot more than I do now and I tried to audition for both the vocal jazz group and the school musical (I was turned down for both unfortunately and it really shook any confidence I had to sing publicly). But more to the point, when I auditioned for vocal jazz the music teacher told me I was an alto, and it bummed me out because at the time I associated altos with small background or harmony parts that you couldn't necessarily hear in an ensemble and I thought my voice would never really be heard the way I'd want it to. I always grew up idolizing Amy Lee's voice and she's who I wanted to sing like more than anyone, but by limiting myself based on the vocal label I was given I assumed I'd never be able to. It absolutely hurt me as a singer more than it helped. I really appreciate hearing this perspective, so thank you. 😊

  • @Lizxxy

    They’ve made a really good point in classification. In school I started off as a soprano and then as my voice started to change, my teacher moved me down to an Alto 1. I was upset because I had never sang as an alto and I thought that’s it was going to be harder for me to reach those lower notes. I was stuck in that soprano mentality that I almost wanted to reject my voice. I became really insecure about my voice because I thought that I wasn’t able to sing high notes anymore. I felt that I was limited to only singing lower notes. My teacher had told me that vocally I was stronger and I sounded better ( which I agree now) but I’m still insecure about my voice tbh
    I’ve been binge watching your videos and it’s helped me get a better understanding from my teacher and other vocal coaches’ point of view. I’ve gained a little more confidence in my voice and I don’t really feel limited as much as I did before. I just need to practice more I guess
