It's because your aiming skill affects Crit chance. Your critical chance increases by 10 multiplied by your aiming skill divided by 2 then added to the result is your aiming skill x 3. It's penalized by stuff like range, moodles, and how long it's been since you moved. No matter the aiming skill and ciritcal chance of the weapon it is ultimately capped at 90% for firearms
Great vid! One important thing I would add is that if you are driving and initiate the reload function on a gun, you are unable to control the car and cannot cancel the reload. Whatever direction/speed the vehicle is currently going at will be locked in until you finish reloading. With the window open, you want to make sure that your path ahead is clear before initiating a reload. To mitigate this, use a weapon with low mag/clip count like the double barrel shotgun
@@Mattsi haha i think you visually covered it when your squad car rolled into the trees 😆 just wanted to comment in case anyone was curious why that happened Also - crazy that the scope minimum shot distance scales w your aim level! I've always avoided scopes and gone w iron sights (for that little boost) and avoid a zombie sneaking up behind me while I was zoomed out 😵 def gonna roll with the scopes now though
The thing about scopes is that they subtract accuracy when outsize of the proper range, and that different firearms provide a different amount of accuracy per level. An MSR700 gives a ton of accuracy per level, making it easy to get over 100% accuracy (and hence high or guaranteed chance to hit even with the scope penalty), while M16 and M14 have a low combination of base-accuracy + accuracy-per-level making them _not_ possible to gain over 100% accuracy, and hence suffer huge penalties outside of scope range. With regards to leveling aiming you missed by far the most important tip: hit multiple zombies at once with the shotgun, ideally 4- _ESPECIALLY_ if you're limited on ammo (which most people are, at least in single player modless). This is because the game sees to multiply your experience by the number of targets hit _TWICE_ -which I presume is a bug- meaning that hitting 1 zombie will give 1x experience, but hitting 4 zombies will give 16x experience, or 4x the amount of hitting 1 zombie 4 times.
I've yet to notice that multiplier with hitting 4 zombies. Will do some tests on that soon, only recently found an xp drop mod - will help out Bigly And for the scopes, I just didn't notice much of anything like what you mentioned. If it's in the code, it's in the code, but I haven't seen anything regarding a accuracy per level when I was researching for the video. And I definitely didn't feel anything like that when I was running my own tests. Best I could describe it was that the minimum range just didn't matter at a certain level.
awesome video, very informative, ive never really used guns much because of the NOISE! but since playing multiplayer a lot recently i thought i should try and get some tips. Thanks for the video! earned a sub :)
One little known tip is that when zombies are on the ground they're super easy to hit with guns, also zombies on default setting fall over when climbing fences so if you can lure a horde to a place with alot of fences (like the farmland south of Rosewood or almost anywhere in Muldraugh) and hold alt to target downed zombies, they're basically free kills
I am leveling shooting by pushing down a single zombie to step on him and give him a one shot kill in the head. OR I am trying to get a large horde and shoot with a shotgun on them while using beta blocksers.
Did you know that you can get keys to ANY building in PZ? Simply lure a zombie in a building like a police station and kill it. there is a chance of spawning a key in a zombie so you can get through those doors with no problem without taking them down! Pretty useful info.
7:35 regarding pain affecting aiming / firing especially on the arms, from my experience, having full agony pain Moodle not just on those parts affect aiming hella alot for me the most.
*You can find these sledge hammers-* No you can't, I am certain at this point that they do not exist. Also, ammo strap seems to work as intended with brita's firearms, with decent reloading and the right mods you can make the street sweeper reload faster than it fires. Shit's completely broken and I wouldn't use anything else when clearing tight hallways.
RnG, baby... My latest run - Mouldrough spawn, found 3 of them in the warehouse near gas station. Three!!! ... imagine my dumbfounded face. But.... can't find 'how to use generators' magazine, no frickin' way.. .. Not sure if it exists...? 🤔
I thought it didn't exist too, but we found one with a friend in the trucks that are fixing the sewage, often parked at middle of the road with cones around it, spawn is broken, si that's the only place you'll find it
I found a stash of like 20 guns and about 15 boxes of ammo of each type in ravencreek. I died mere minutes later because I just started blasting and got chased by tons of zombies
I always see people in walkthroughs smashing the security doors in the police stations but I usually just lure a couple zombies inside and kill them for a house key. I usually get a key by my second or third zombie and it's way easier.
My go to for grabbing guns; there's a small town in the middle of the map with a little lake in it. In that town is a "Rural Supply Store". That store has more guns and ammo than police stations, and they arent even behind a gate or locked door. True Kentucky experience.
For anyone who wants the guns inside the Rosewood police station, instead of breaking down the door with guns you don’t yet have. You can find the key for that room on one of the zombies either inside or around the station.
Theres a military surplus store in the west of the map without the security gates you need a sledgehammer for. It's out of the way of all the named towns but if you have a hard time finding a sledgehammer I would go there.
Military surplus store is an insane locations for guns and ammo. No sledge required and not an insane mob of zombies either. Added bonus of military gear and knives.
If yoi have trouble finding sledgehammer you can throw a molotov at the building and wait till 1 of the walls burns in such a way that you can pass through them, be sure to stook up on pots with water to put the fire out once you get inside. We dont want to burn all that ammo
a easy way to get some aiming and reloading levels is to shoot up the local prison, its full of hordes constantly and if you can dump a few bullets into it you pretty rapidly level up, just dont get bit is my suggestion. anyways did you know that the average light clothing on a character still takes up 1/18 of the average inventory, my suggestion is to run around naked with no protection, as this will make you much more effective in combat.
I would say police officer is a better occupation since it gives you +1 nimble which makes the skill so much easier to level up. Also nimble is extremely important when it comes to gunplay. The panic won't matter as much when your character lives long enough so it really depends your playstyle. There's also 6 less point trade-off for the police officer occupation which allows you to take more positive traits like brave. With brave any character that survives for more than 3 months is barely affected by the panic moodle plus you can just take beta blockers.
On 0 aiming you can still kill zombies. But you have to keep them very close, actually the distance will be not so different to compare to melee weapon. But is very high chance to kill in one shot. And one most important thing, do not walk when you aiming.
Saw a beautiful tip to break into the west point gun store with no sledgehammer. Step1.Grab a zombie body and set it near a wall. Step 2. make a campfire and place it next to the body. Step 3. Set it ablaze and be ready with water to quench the flames once the wall burns.
It was like my third game playing and I was running from a horde cause I didn't know how to loose then and I just happen to stubble upon what I know now to be the military base I wasent that smart and went in their completely naked with nothing I died within 30 secs
Because no one seems to talk about this let me say it: drink alcohol. Seriously get yourself slightly tipsy and it completely counters panic. I don't know if tipsy affects your aim at all, but going from extreme panic to none at all definitely does
And there is me with a m9 pistol 4 clips and like 150 bullits. I drove off to random areas west (I spawned rosewood) and I just gathered small groups of zombies and just shot them. Yeah you need to let them get really really close but eventually I had aiming lvl 3 and I could kill stuff with my m9 pistol. It was pretty funny to just shoot and kill 20 zombies in the middle of no where on the highway. I also found a m14 and 200 bullets so I am going to use that after haha.
I just cant agree with you on police officer because there are things that youre missing. Firstly, desensitized is not that good of a trait unless youre playing with sprinters. All it takes is couple of beta blockers to remove panic completely for a good while. Sprinters is exception because you wont have time to do that. Secondly, Police officer gives aiming, which means its Xp gain 125% as opposed to veteran's %100. This might not seem alot but ammo and guns are a finite resource, its simply optimal to have the highest Xp multiplier just so you can enjoy guns longer. Police officer has nimble, which also gives 75% bonus to that skill. Nimble is by far the best agility skill as its amazing for melee and good for aiming. Its one of those skills you always want.
true, but then you'd also have to suffer the ignobility of being a police officer. no one wants to be a police officer, not even police officers! i assume that's why they keep shooting each other, anyway.
Even if you only smoke half a pack a day, 160 smokes is roughly a day short of two weeks worth...only one week if you're particularly stressed out by the horde of undead constantly nipping at your heels. On the upside, withdrawal from not being able to find any smokes might add extra addiction fueled rage for smashing slackjaws. The zompocalypse is full of mixed blessings
If anyone is preparing to head up to the military base for the first time and is expecting to bring home an arsenal, don't expect anything like that. I just spent 2 nights raiding the military base, and while I found some badass military gear like helmets and backpacks, and then some 5.56 ammo, there wasn't a single firearm for me to find within those fences :(
i constantly spawn in the rosewood police station. more so than houses. maybe because i always make unemployed characters. the unemployed ones even still have a chance to spawn with the armory key for some reason?
i like to play with guns in zomboids... but for me it's really discouragin how limited the ammo is. To be really useful, it would be nice to have a renewable source of ammo, by crafting it by exemple, but i understand it's not really realistic, i would not implement craftable ammo myself. I guess i just need to find more ammo places, with enough of it for a lifetime
Guns are super fun! For right now I do think once you get to level 3 aiming you have enough power to seek out all the ammo on the map. Now once all that's gone I do wonder if they'll address it when they add the big crafting overhaul and the game slowly takes on a medieval vibe
@@Mattsi xell, not that i think about it, it's not a really a gun, but would be nice to have a crossbow. Then, we would be able to craft some low quality ammunition for it. Same thing for the crossbow itself. We could have a high tier lootable crossbow, and a low quality craftable one. But realisticly, you would need high tier tools and a lot of time to make a crossbow, not just a knife xp So, in the end it would not be really realistic to craft one. Maybe a bow at least ? would be super fun

Within the first 30 seconds of the video there's more footage of me standing still and firing than not. Even a clip of me moving and hitting a shot. Just saying stand still is kinda mid. If you want to be as effective and as safe as possible learn how long it takes to go from moving, to still, to aiming and continually weave all that together. I got nothing against you, and I hope this didn't come off as mean, I just be getting "stand still" comments frequently and they almost always sound like folks who want to be eaten by zombies.
I can not advise repressors enough. Silencer mods? gold. Start in Riverside and put the river at your back. Just make sure to clear your exit route first and continuously.
a few updates back 2.0.0.2 (I saw an old update online and wanted to see what changed) being panicked killed my survivor because he was nearsighted so it made him kind of BLIND he got attacked and died but the zombie only got in my view distance after he went for the bite!
I dont think desensitized is that important. It feels important early on behavior the system to get calm faster kicks in. It feels important because the same zombies tend to spoke you multiple times as you keep moving away to reload and then looking back at them which triggers the panic anew. However. Beta blockers and improved range once you get 4 levels or so, mitigates this hugely. Veteran is an expensive solution to a temporary problem
@@Mattsi actually its not , its my bad , i misunderstood the crafting tab where you can make gunpowder from bullets , thinking that with gunpowder can make any kind of bullet .

Yeah, I thought I covered that, but it was for a joke so maybe I just didn't. Whoops 😁
Thank you for sharing though :D
@@Mattsi haha i think you visually covered it when your squad car rolled into the trees 😆 just wanted to comment in case anyone was curious why that happened
Also - crazy that the scope minimum shot distance scales w your aim level!
Will do some tests on that soon, only recently found an xp drop mod - will help out Bigly
And for the scopes, I just didn't notice much of anything like what you mentioned.
I'm glad it helped you! Hopefully you can start using the loud boys. :D
Found this on Google but I wanted to say your addition of a tinnitus/ringing sound SFX was great.
Thank you! It makes me real happy when my edits are enjoyed :D
One little known tip is that when zombies are on the ground they're super easy to hit with guns, also zombies on default setting fall over when climbing fences
so if you can lure a horde to a place with alot of fences (like the farmland south of Rosewood or almost anywhere in Muldraugh) and hold alt to target downed zombies, they're basically free kills
True, true. No clue if they plan to keep that in the game or not though. :(
@@Mattsi They probably will. It is a feature by now i think.
I hate that sledgehammer requirement for that gunstore. I always end up driving around louisville until I find one by a manhole first.
I would suggest the train yard by the military check point.
Humourous and informative video. Thanks for the upload 👍
the most jarring thing about zomboid as a gun person. is this is how effective the average untrained person is with a gun.
I'm glad to hear that's another thing that's fairly realistic
7:35 regarding pain affecting aiming / firing especially on the arms, from my experience, having full agony pain Moodle not just on those parts affect aiming hella alot for me the most.
Hmm 🤔
I'll have to check this out for myself!
Thank you c:
I like police officer because of the nimble xp boost and cheaper cost.
Very based take, I prefer it for the nimble too
*You can find these sledge hammers-*
No you can't, I am certain at this point that they do not exist.
Same here, in Mouldrough warehouse
@@GamerMNE Its also the RNG but theres a nice book shop in Rosewood, just got one there
@@adamprekob4141 thanks for the tip, heading there now!
I thought it didn't exist too, but we found one with a friend in the trucks that are fixing the sewage, often parked at middle of the road with cones around it, spawn is broken, si that's the only place you'll find it
i actually found that the m36 revolver and the m14 rifle both hit maybe 40-50% of the time at aiming level 0.
I found a stash of like 20 guns and about 15 boxes of ammo of each type in ravencreek.
I died mere minutes later because I just started blasting and got chased by tons of zombies
But it was worth it, right?
@@Mattsi precisely
I always see people in walkthroughs smashing the security doors in the police stations but I usually just lure a couple zombies inside and kill them for a house key. I usually get a key by my second or third zombie and it's way easier.
True, but it's much funnier to smash the door
My go to for grabbing guns; there's a small town in the middle of the map with a little lake in it. In that town is a "Rural Supply Store". That store has more guns and ammo than police stations, and they arent even behind a gate or locked door. True Kentucky experience.
For anyone who wants the guns inside the Rosewood police station, instead of breaking down the door with guns you don’t yet have. You can find the key for that room on one of the zombies either inside or around the station.
Or you could get an axe from the fire station down the road
@@StinksOS3 or you could just dissamble it with saw , screwdriver and hammer
Can you not also burn a wall down to get into the gun shop?
You know what, you're onto something wonderful
Theres a military surplus store in the west of the map without the security gates you need a sledgehammer for. It's out of the way of all the named towns but if you have a hard time finding a sledgehammer I would go there.
The dinamic traits its one of the best mod for this game
Amen 🙏
Military surplus store is an insane locations for guns and ammo. No sledge required and not an insane mob of zombies either. Added bonus of military gear and knives.
How did you make the container you were looting highlighted in blue instead of orange? It looks really cool. All around a great video!
It's in the game settings somewhere, my dude! I forgot entirely where though, oops
Thank you, HungerShovel! 😊
I've played veteran sense I've started playing a few weeks back. Sometimes it'll spawn in the Rosewood police station.
If yoi have trouble finding sledgehammer you can throw a molotov at the building and wait till 1 of the walls burns in such a way that you can pass through them, be sure to stook up on pots with water to put the fire out once you get inside. We dont want to burn all that ammo
Oh my... That... Sure is a strategy. I'm digging it, man
It's my 3rd day playing this game, I went to the military base solo, cleared everything, and barely got anything back weapons wise lol.
Yeah :')
Military Base was a meme to me and my friends for a good bit
a easy way to get some aiming and reloading levels is to shoot up the local prison, its full of hordes constantly and if you can dump a few bullets into it you pretty rapidly level up, just dont get bit is my suggestion.
anyways did you know that the average light clothing on a character still takes up 1/18 of the average inventory, my suggestion is to run around naked with no protection, as this will make you much more effective in combat.
You're onto something you absolute genius
You could, I see that working. But I am notorious for not quenching fires fast enough :')

Okay, buddy. I can laugh too, I'm just not in AZ :(
It was like my third game playing and I was running from a horde cause I didn't know how to loose then and I just happen to stubble upon what I know now to be the military base I wasent that smart and went in their completely naked with nothing I died within 30 secs
Time for the revenge arc, gear up and get back in there, gamer.
Show them your happy feet wombo combo c:
Because no one seems to talk about this let me say it: drink alcohol. Seriously get yourself slightly tipsy and it completely counters panic. I don't know if tipsy affects your aim at all, but going from extreme panic to none at all definitely does
I feel like drink alcohol is dangerous advice, generally speaking, but yeah. A beer can alone is better than every medical item in the game, ezpz
Instructions unclear, sticking with pointy stick.
The most valuable information I can give to anyone is to stick with the spear
Mad respect for naming Super Animal Royale. Absolutely based
Game has no right being that fun, and I can be a ferret? I'm in.
@@Mattsi bro I've watched the game evolve from its first year to where it is now. I love it like my own child LOL
I feel that, although I can't say I have the same relationship with SAR myself. It's a ridiculously cool game and I greatly enjoy the ball 🙂
Very very true, brother.
Thank you for doing this math
But realisticly, you would need high tier tools and a lot of time to make a crossbow, not just a knife xp
So, in the end it would not be really realistic to craft one. Maybe a bow at least ? would be super fun
@@chinois11 they intend to bring in a TON of crafting options and as a world progresses it will phase out occupations with trades and things like blacksmithing. That's the plan currently, anyway. So I could 100% see them adding a craftable high tier crossbow
@@Mattsi damn, would be amazing !
i just hope reading books will not be requierment for it.
I hate to read books in this game, to the point that i'm starting to make illiterate characters xp
@@chinois11 I'm not sure how they'll implement it, but I'm VERY excited!
I might add use Molotov Cocktail plus shotgun to level up. There have been times when I couldn't find a shotgun and pushed zombies down and shot them. And why in the hell suggest the military base? There are only 2 gun lockers there! At least go to the military check point in Louisville! You have a chance to find M16s,M14s and a fair amount of ammo!
The plan is coming together, peep the upcoming streams. Gotta collect massive amounts of footage for this project. It'd be easier if I did it alone, but I at least need to set up a starting base with the boys first.
@@Mattsi No doubt I spent something like 15 days in Louisville looking for M16s that did not spawn. I did hit some pretty sweet pawn shops though and found so much ammo and even a katana! I had to leave a truck packed with guns behind though. I got out with my life and a Mobile Oil truck and trailer full of guns and ammo. If you want some help get at me everything about PZ is time consuming! LUL!
Man when he said he had over a hundred bullets and only killed one zombie with 0 aiming, I felt that. Tried to use the magnum with over 200 rounds and wanted to level aiming so I went zed hunting and killed 3 zeds
Three is a high bar, friend. Be proud
Police officer wins easily IMO since you can find tons of Beta Blockers in the game even with extremely rare loot option on.
Fair point, yeah.
I actually don't find myself deviating from my burglar build even if I choose to use guns later on though.
From what I remember Police Officer gives +nimble, which is just wonderful tbh

Moving decreases accuracy. Stand still while aiming to aftually hit things.
The fact no one talks about the Brave trait pisses me off a bit, i always take it and i never get panicked
I tend to write these videos without considering specific builds.
Assuming I didn't mention the Brave trait in the video.

I can not advise repressors enough. Silencer mods? gold. Start in Riverside and put the river at your back. Just make sure to clear your exit route first and continuously.
Good tips, good tips, yes yes!

mmmm....THAT'S why I keep spawning in the Rosewood police department. I did not put those things together.
what i did to grind my reloading is i had a 60 rounder for a m4 and i just kept reloading it
I have spawned in the police station as a vet before as well

Sad the gun light doesn’t work in vanilla or with mods, would be nice to not have to hold a flash light or lighter while firing an M9 or revolver
Yeeeeeah, the flashlights are just kinda cumbersome
about gun store in west point, you can wall clip through the store
What kind of wall clip?
Blind is a modded trait at that point might as well download advanced trajectory...
a few updates back 2.0.0.2 (I saw an old update online and wanted to see what changed) being panicked killed my survivor because he was nearsighted so it made him kind of BLIND he got attacked and died but the zombie only got in my view distance after he went for the bite!
Today i spawned as a Veteran in Mildraugh, Police station
Wait a minute 🤔
they gotta fix why i cant shoot a damn horde once with a gun of any type even if im scared shitless
Check police cars if you see any, they usually have a gun or two
I just find one zombie then push it to the ground then shoot then at point blank then ran or drive away and repeat, to grind my aiming
I mean, that works. But it could be faster
"the big haul" starts driving to one of the worst places to go for guns. just about any police station is better alone.
Yup

I dont think desensitized is that important. It feels important early on behavior the system to get calm faster kicks in. It feels important because the same zombies tend to spoke you multiple times as you keep moving away to reload and then looking back at them which triggers the panic anew. However. Beta blockers and improved range once you get 4 levels or so, mitigates this hugely.
Veteran is an expensive solution to a temporary problem

Hacked mine in, but you can usually find guns in West Point. Or in police stations, but largely you'll be set after a gun store visit.
I don’t know how true this is but I’ve noticed my character has slightly better aim while in a vehicle, which would make sense since you can use the door to stabilize the weapon
