I once met Hbox in a tournament and to show him my appreciation and love I threw a crab at him so he could eat it. He picked it up and saw the gift I gave him and smiled at it and then he got up and started yelling at the audience saying "WHO THREW THIS CRAB AT ME" "YOU SUCK" "THAT IS ANIMAL ABUSE" and walked away with the crab and I remained appaled that my generosity was met with resentment from my idol in a very scummy way

Another 3 months later...
More controversy.
The worst part about Leffen enforcing the pause rule and making Scar SD was the fact that, in doubles, if you lose your last stock and your teammate has another stock you press the pause button to "take the stock" from your teammate and rejoin the game. Obviously it's better to have two players with one stock rather than a 2v1 with two stocks. Scar died, thinking he was on his last stock, and mashed pause to try and get back in a quickly as possible and help SFAT. Because he wasn't on his last stock, this caused the game to actually pause.
What Leffen did was completely supported by the rules, but it's honestly an exploit that few players would use because of how scummy it is.
I'm sure Zero knows this, I just wanted to add context for some viewers that may be unfamiliar with the mechanics of doubles matches.
Rules are rules man. If it isn't enforced then there shouldn't be any at all. Yeah it's taking advantage, BUT, it's in the nature of ANY sport, and we as a community should respect the rule and the player taking the decision
Diego As grimy as it may seem, I support this. Scar outplayed himself by being unaware of his stock count, so his accidental pausing could be akin to a misinput like missing a wave dash near the ledge.
There was so much incriminating evidence that showed Leffen to be extremely toxic as a person + competitive smash player, but this was a very weak example imo. Here he just seems like a cold-hearted stickler to the rules, which is actually fairly common given the cutthroat nature of the competitive FGC...maybe not so in this particular melee circle where they prized chumminess over their own rule set.

WakkaSeta Are you implying that Smash Bros - a fighting game played competitively - is not part of the Fighting Game Community?
I understand that many see smash as the black sheep of the FGC, but it’s still a part of it.
If this is truly considered scummy by a majority the rules should be changed to accommodate this. Rules have to be pushed and exploited if they're ever going to be correct. this is called stress testing and all sets of rules need to be stress tested before they can be made correctly. Sometimes stress testing occurs in environments we don't prefer but we should just consider that a part of the history of that rules development.

Leffen is straight up cancer yet the melee community accepts him more than HungryBox all because of their character choices. Says a lot about the melee community and their priorities right here tbh.
KoopaXross Leffen is openly...abrasive at times, let’s say. The difference is that he’s not trying to hide it, and doesn’t really personally attack people unless they do a first (he’s pretty harsh if he thinks your opinion is wrong, I will say).
The reason people don’t like hbox is that he’s fake, and intentionally tries to make people feel bad for no reason. Leffen said as much, and there’s a reason virtually no one in the smash community defended hbox when Leffen tweeted about him. Mango on stream even said something along the lines of “everyone knows it’s true, but there’s no reason to talk about it.” Leffen is opinionated and doesn’t hide it-and while that isn’t a bad thing, I’ll concede at time I want him to tone it down. It’s much worse when someone tries to come off as a good person, and behind the scenes they are toxic.

Um...no? No, beating them isn't his way of trying to make people feel bad. You are right, using reasoning like that would be pretty desperate...that's why I'm not using it? Not sure why you imagined some bad logic out of thin air and then assumed that it's how I'm justifying what I'm saying.
Mango and Armada---Armada, one of the nicest people in the community-, and Mango, who prettymuch gets along with everyone--are two other people who have gone on record saying that they don't like hbox. There's HugS, another respected person in the community, who's shown evidence that he doesn't like hbox. It was a long time ago so the VOD doesn't exist, but Shroomed, a generally happy guy, briefly said on stream at the time that leffen was right about hbox's personality.
There are YT videos with stories of hbox being shitty towards people. There's a video of him cursing at someone for yelling a silly little chant during his smash 4 match. When Leffen made some pretty strong statements about hbox on twitter, there's a reason virtually no relevant community figures came to his defense. Imagine if leffen tried to say this about someone like axe, mew2king, etc. There would be big personalities in smash defending these people. There's nothing "desperate for validation" about the community disliking hbox after what's been revealed. What's desperate is when you make negative blanket statements about a community. It's also pretty desperate when you magically come up with reasoning out of thin air, assign that reasoning to an entire community, and then criticize the community for imagined agreement with imagined reasoning.
Sorry I was confused. I thought we were talking about reasonable adults here.
Instead it's "Leffen and Mango are popular, so if they don't like someone that validates us hating and terrorizing him! Because the cool kids said it's ok!"
I genuinely didn't realize the Smash community was still operating at a middle school level of maturity. It all makes a lot more sense now.
I can definitely see why n oone would want to come to HBox's defense and be immediately ostracized from the entire community as Manga and Leffen and their cronies turn on them. Middle schoolers so often have trouble sticking up against the bullies and defending the people being picked on, especially when they aren't the target.
What is this "silly little chant"? Was it when they all chanted "fuck HBox"? Or when they booed him at the Evo award ceremony? Or was it the time they threw an animal at him on stage? Once again we see the middle school mentality rear it's head though. "We've literally terrorized and bullied this kid for years. Now when he finally sticks up for himself, we get to frame him as the bad guy! That's what he gets for not being unpopular!"
Thanks, your explanation has confirmed for me that the Smash community is working on a maturity level below that of any other competitive video game community. If anything my original post wasn't harsh enough.

Yeah like the final bayo drama which resulted in the EVO life of melee ending. Out of hand is often a understatement. Smash crowds are insane like verbal moshpits.
Those Bayo players broke the EVO rules by stalling. The crowd booing wasn’t the problem, those clowns stalled the match and made a mockery of the entire community.

There's a difference between broken characters and being good at a character and a lot of people don't know that, but I guess sometimes the character is legit broken?
Yes sometimes a character is broken. They have few weaknesses, many buffs, and can sometimes be unstoppable no matter the player unless the player is particularly bad. When a character is that strong that it can beat all other characters with a ton of ease, it's unfair that the person who plays that character will always have an advantage over everyone else.
You mean the Smash community doesn't know that. Only the Smash community consistently try to get characters banned or nerfed because they weren't their favorites and they won a tournament.
Few characters in Smash after 64 have been legitimately broken. Only afew if them have been banned(ice climber wobbling for example). Most were left unbanned(base patch bayo, S4 diddy, etc).
Issue I find with the Smash community is they tend to advocate for things based off feelings not facts. Thus creating alot of controversy between the majority of the player base and the players who actually understand fighting games and balance.

He wasn't wrong. Nairo couldn't edge guard, did u watch the clip? He didn't leave the stage once. Nairo is good at it now, but back then he didn't
Leffen is far better than his past. His personality is just kinda blunt and to the point which isn’t inherently bad. I think he plays up his role sorta like a “villian”. Leffen wasn’t doubting nairo as a player and he knows nairo is a much better player than he is in ultimate (not even a contest). But rather smash 4 isn’t really a game which relied on edgeguards and they aren’t worth while a lot of the time. Melee on the other hand, edge guarding is more important. Ultimate while plays closer to smash 4 has more of a weight to edge guards than smash 4.
Therefore nairo and also smash 4 players in general are naturally not as good with edgeguards. Nairo didn’t even hold any beef with leffen and acknowledged he could be better which as you can see nairo now, is much better.
leffen didn't say nairo couldn't edgeguard, he said that nairo didn't go for edgeguards, because in the beginning of ultimate nairo played very similar to smash 4 and always stayed on stage. leffen was telling him, that he should go for edgeguards more often and nowadays nairo edgeguards quite a lot

Glad you brought the hbox scenario. That was my first smash tournament and they were about 4 rows behind me. Watched one smash 4 major prior but that pissed me tf off them doing that to him ngl. I didn’t even know who hbox was until that day and I felt bad.

My first loss in tournament was to a Diddy Kong player and since I was like in semi finals I got kicked out of the bracket while others were still in losers because it would've took too much time. So in all honesty I was pissed. But after like 3 locals I started winning every local non-stop for a year. So let's go, thank you ZeRo giving me the tilt stick strat very early smash 4 meta

mr. Worldwide sooooo basically Esam was mad because Samsora wouldn’t help Esam with his peach match up before his tournament. So after Esam lost his set with peach he went up to the commentator’s mic and called Samsora a bitch if I’m not mistaken.

My experience with the pause rule, I went to a local and pause accidentally, my opponent didn’t care until he lost and said “you paused you lose that match” then ran around and got a TO until he got the TO to disqualify me from the match, and that did happen so I was pretty pissed that he cared until after he lost the match and the TO disqualified me (cause it was game 2 and I was down 1 match)
1. Your opponent is scum
2. Getting DQ'd was objectively the wrong call
3. Contact the TO because that's grimy af
Pausing=/=lose the match. That was objectively the wrong call for the TO to do.
Pretty sure the universal rule is that if the opponent wants the stock gone for pausing, the decision has to be made right then and there. Otherwise, grimy technicalities like this would arise...”oh I can keep playing the set because if I lose, I have this leverage.”
At the VERY least, you should have been able to do a one-game rematch if not just outright have won the set because the dude played on.
