I used to love Hungry box but then, I saw him in a supermarket. I approached him and told him how much I respect him and how he is my favourite smash player. Then we hugged, and it felt nice. But then he up throw rested me and killed me instantly.

The Smash Bros community is mostly childlike in mindset at best, and the sad thing is that it permeates all levels of play as well as all AGES of players. There are people who are AGGRESSIVE in establishing that they do not play competitively and insult those who do, as though competitive players are somehow not only playing the game wrong, but that anyone who aspires to more than casual play is also part of a "problem" of some sort.
I remember seeing people driven off of forums because they brought up more competitive concepts during a discussion of Smash Bros, and forum regulars trampled over eachother to dogpile on them and insult them. And like the racist trash many of these people also tended to mock and insult, they played it off as "it was just jokes bro, don't take it personally bro."
I was never good enough to get anywhere competitively at Smash Bros, but one day I got the same treatment from people I thought were good friends. I decided then and there I simply didn't have it in me to keep pushing my skills forward and putting up with that level of bullshit from a "community", and stepped away from the game permanently. This is why I will always, always have respect for players like ZeRo and HBox, because they had the mental fortitude to weather a storm driven by people who would mostly crumble under that same pressure, and succeed where the vast majority of us would or have failed.

I really like Hbox. I met him at CEO and he was really chill. We were talking after one of his sets and he proceed to down air rest me in the middle of the crowd and everyone cheered for him.

One time I saw Juan in a Wal-Mart sprinting down the rice aisle with a shopping cart making the rollout sound with his mouth and he actually vaporized a stack of Uncle Ben's on impact. He paid for the damage, apologized profusely and owned up to his mistake of using rollout in neutral. Really an all-around humble guy.

It's really hard not to feel discouraged and angry at how cruel and uncaring people in the world can be, but ultimately I understand you can't fight fire with fire.

When I was first finding out about the smash competitive scene, I could never understand the hate for Hbox. I always tried to learn and understand why. Eventually, I just came to terms that people are just idiots.
Maybe you should just watch a full tournament of just him, it's mind numbing.
Its the playstyle they hate. Camping and overusing a kit that offers early kills and super safe spacing.
A big reason for the hate is basically leffen. Leffen is one of the players they worship and he absolutely hates Hungrybkz.
@@rekt_yer_nan_darding_5788 well I don't think smash Bros tournaments were always these big public events, so it didn't really matter how you played, and I think even know it still doesn't matter, they are televising it out of choice, so if you don't like it, just don't watch it instead of being rude.

You know what's even more crazy? Back when Zero was in the scene he was treated as a bad guy.

Can i say i hate how our world works with the minority the *Negative* Minority being so loud? You could barley do any wrong and someone is out to diss and harass you for just existing. It legit sickens me that as humans bad news sells. If we are not entertained by what's on screen whatever effort and skill the other player is doing is casted aside. 13:58 this right here reminded me of when people were making fun of a child for being happy that he won a pokemon tournament. I was so pissed off at these people for saying the kid is "unprofessional" and "rude" to the other kid, even though the two are friends and I would do the same if I won a game tournament.
People putting down others achievements just because they dont like them just makes me pissed off. There is another instance of this, such as Tyler1 hitting challenger while playing jungle only and people putting him down because they either dont like him or they just didn't want him to succeed. The dude grinded to get where he is and I respect him for backing up his bark with a bite.

I mean, tyler1 was a toxic asshole... I think people just didnt want to see him succeed because of the harm he and other toxic streamers did to the league community, not because he isnt actually good.
I think tyler1 and a few other people in the league community are the complete opposite of zero and hungrybox.
Tyler1 legitimately deserved to be banned, but because he is good at the game, people just gave his awful behavior a pass.
Now, with that said, he has grown into a respectable icon of the community, and he legit reformed.
But if he hadnt, if he had kept being a toxic asshole ruining games because he dislikes a player for whatever reason and whatnot, people would still defend him because he is good. He and many others did irreversible harm to the community.
Zero and hbox were hated for arbitrary reasons. They didnt actually deserve it.
Tyler1 deserves all the hate he got, even if he wouldnt deserve it now.
There were also a few cases of popular streamers doing elo boosting or other toxic behavior and they never reformed. Some had to be banned permanently, and the community still defended them because "le troll is funny" or simply because of their high skill.
Hbox and ZeRo pushed smash beyond its limits and moved it forward, and they were hated because they were gods amongst mere humans.
Tyler1 and a few other infamous streamers pushed league back and very heavily harmed its community by making awful behavior and mentality common. Some streamers even had blacklists of people you had to troll if you came across in ranked. The backlash in this case is completely justified. And while im glad tyler1 earned a spot in the league community once he reformed and actually brought positivity and inspiration, many other streamers like him never did, and had to be banned instead.
A little ranty perhaps, but tyler1's story is not at all similar to hbox's or zero's
Hbox seems to be a pretty nice guy, I had heard of the drama going around with him and decided to find out what all the fuss was about by visiting his channel and seeing how he reacts to losses and stuff like that. Well here's what I think.
Hbox isn't that bad! He's very energetic and honestly really fun to watch. I don't blame him for being angry since obviously there's a ton of pressure to perform well when thousands of people are watching. I've never met him personally but from my perspective he seems very grateful for his fanbase and just overall a very happy and caring person. I genuinely don't understand why people hate on successful people just because they aren't "cool" or don't play a "sick" character. It's so dumb to me. That's just like saying that just because I like Star Wars, I'm garbage and a mean person, even of you haven't met me.
If you don't like me, don't talk to me.
If you don't like Hbox, don't hate on him for no reason. State your opinion respectfully, please.

9:06 - 9:47 THANK YOU, it’s so annoying for me to always hear how “bad” Brawl was when in reality it was a different game made for a clearly different audience, I understand why pros (specially Melee players) didn’t liked the game but I feel many people are mislead into believe that just bc it wasn’t competitive viable it was a terrible game, which is far from true.
Brawl is very fun. I've never seen it as a "lower" Smash game, and it has an awesome soundtrack selection.

This video really opened my mind to how discriminating against players for playing "lame" and "toxic" isn't at all a good thing. I have so much more respect and a lot less hate for players like H-box and Sonix after watching this video and although I still have no respect for their characters and they way they play, I don't think associating that hate with the players is ok.

Even although i dont play puff much, hbox is actually one of my favorite smash players because of his personality and how much he’s pushing for nintendo to actually support smash.

This is one of my favorite videos you’ve posted. It really showed who you are as a person. Thanks dude, for being humble and kind.
I actually want to share my own personal experience with being hated in competitive gaming.
Not for Smash, but for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tournaments in Las Vegas.. The more I watch videos about controversial players within Smash Bros, the more I start to relate their experience to my own, just on a much smaller scale. I still don't understand part of why the community hated me though. A point mentioned in this video is that a lot of players hate Hbox because he plays a hated character. But in Mario Kart, all characters do the same thing, apart from having different stats, so there's is no way they hated me just because of the character I played. You also mentioned some hate Hbox got for popping off, and I can also relate to this. In one tourney, after I won the first race, I believe what I did, because it was close, was I got up, had I quick little fist pump, and a "yes", and sat back down. Later, someone in their discord mentioned that he was visiting friends in Florida and he showed them that tournament. When I popped off, they asked if I had just one, and he replied, "No, that was just the first race," to which his friends said, "Oh wow, he seems like a real douche." But that's not the case because there's absolutely nothing wrong with popping off, especially after a close match. He also said his wife couldn't stop laughing because she thought it was true. I should also add, they're the parents of one of the younger competitors at the tourneys. So here you have the parents of one of the competitors, calling a 13 year old a douche, because he popped off. Wow. You also mention in this video that pressure kills passion, and I definitely agree with this. The way I was treated by them and the amount of hate that I got definitely played into me eventually quitting those tournaments. On their discord, they always try to shift the blame to me, in pretty much every way. At one point they even asked me to apologize for my actions, even though I hardly ever did anything. I feel like they definitely know what they did, which is why they asked of that, because they didn't want blame on them, so they try to make me take the blame. What they did to me as a player is absolutely ridiculous and I fear they'll do it again to another player that's even better than me. I'm a very optimistic person, I'm not depressed or anything, and there's nothing going on in my personal life that keeps me down. But what if a player goes to those tournaments who's the opposite of me. What if they are depressed, and what if they're being abused in their personal life. They might see those tournaments as an escape, as hope that things can get better, and then the community would do the same thing to that player as they did to me. That could drive their mental state down, and worst case scenario, they would commit suicide. I made a whole video about this and put it on my channel, and I put it in their discord in hopes I could drive it into their heads that what they did to me was wrong. Within just about 4 hours of me putting it in their discord, it got 18 dislikes, which tells me they really didn't learn anything, they're unwilling to accept that it's them and not me, and that they're toxic on a whole other level. One of the players in the discord, one who wasn't there when I competed and didn't know the background of my story, immediately commented on that video "Shut up, nerd." This is absolutely toxic of them, and they don't know it. It makes me worried for young competitors in the future who will go there.

As a very active Mario Kart Wii player who has played a bit of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with my friend, I can absolutely relate to your pop-off after the race. The intensity in packs can become ridiculously insane and especially at lap3 when you are in the middle of the pack a shock can change anything.
TLDR: people will always find a reason to hate you.

I used to like Hungrybox then I saw him at a grocery store in Los Angeles. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

@Charlie Botterell Well, this video is about competitive context and competitive players hated because of their playstyle, like playing Jigglypuff or playing cheesy or boring characters. It's not not about hating them because of things they did in their personal life, or things they said on Skype or Twitter, it's super easy to confuse those 2 different things. Being hated as a player and being hated as a person are 2 different things. Btw Hbox is a great guy. And I can bet Zero is a great guy too tho he was a weirdo in the past.

its actually okay as it generates plot and hype for tournaments, which is the thing that makes tournaments special. Throwing rocks at them or harassing them to personal levels though, is not alright. Its like zero said, you should boo someone only on the game, but respect them in real life.

I actually don't mind Hbox, LowTierGod is the person who deserves to be the most hated. If you've seen what he's posted as replies on Twitter and heard what he's said in his streams, you wouldn't like him one bit.
He says that shit cause people hate on him. He doesn't care, if people want to be mad he'll make them mad because they were being childish and harassing him in the first place. Like Cero trying to get him banned from tournament, so he got Cero banned as well to point out the hypocrisy.

As someone who has seen people at their worst I actually like having both sides on this. When you see both sides it really allows you to appreciate the people in question and at least begin to understand what they go through.
If you could see both sides to everyone you knew, truth is you probably wouldn't like them. But seeing the full story at least helps you understand the person standing next to you. Thanks for the comments!

Yeah it’s pretty unfair. Hbox is actually a really nice guy if you watch his streams or his RUclips videos. Leffen is the second best player in the world and is basically on just as big a stage as hbox but isn’t hated because he plays a “sick fox”

I actually ignored the competitive Smash scene until Ultimate, so I missed all of the melee gods, Nairo Apex, Zero streak, etc. so it's probably not of much value when I say Hbox is pretty cool now, but I would definitely agree that Hbox's reputation still wouldn't be understood even with Zero explaining from his relatable pov. My respects.

I find that this "Sickness" is where the main Toxicity that the Smash Community has stems from. I'm a Corrin and Roy main and everywhere I go/see I see how people sass me for playing who I like playing simply because of how much Fire Emblem is hated by the Smash Community that in Smash 4 I almost gave up on smash entirely. I feel now in Ultimate this issue with just the people playing the game is less than before but I feel the worst thing the Smash Community has a whole is the Plague called toxic hype. You are people complain at every single character that was in the first fighters pass just because they weren't the character they wanted and it repeated all the way to Byleth where it got the worst.

Epi Start er generally speaking there’s a fire emblem character added every game that happens and when we look at marthcina and chroy they just lazily made their moveset the same marth just seals damage at the tip roy does damage at the hilt white chrom and Lucina doesn’t and nobody likes to see such an identical moveset in the game. Fire emblem mostly gets hate because nobody wants to see another one of that shit 💀😂 while ike corrin are different yet and still people get tired of fire emblem characters

If you meet him in person there's a good chance you wouldn't think that. I've only been at 4 tournaments with him but I've witnessed rude behavior to staff and other competitors at 3 of them.

Zero, I started my Smash journey at the end of Brawl, and the first Smash game I played was Smash 4. You are the reason I am in to competitive now, and the reason I am a somewhat half decent player (at least compared to my friends) in both Smash 4 and Ultimate. You and HBox are my favorite Smash players, and you always have been. Watching your tournaments, seeing your win streak, it motivated me. Not only your wins, but your loses. I always thought of you as one of the Smash 4 gods. Ally, Nairo, MKLeo, Con Con, and you were the 5 players in Smash 4 I considered the gods. When I watch you and HBox, I feel comfortable. In my school, I am hated by almost everyone, some hate me because I am defensive, some hate me because I am the definition of a nerd (besides the hygiene, I feel like I have decent hygiene.) But no matter what I do, I am always seen as the villain. There was a point in time that I felt so unmotivated at school that I would just hold off on the work and do it at home. Seeing you rise from the bottom to being the best Smash 4 player (in my opinion), my favorite game until Ultimate, it really motivated me to become better. I started to stick up for myself more and I started to just be better than the people booing me. I don't know if any of this made sense, but what I mean to say, is thank you.

There all idiots anyway who dont understand law or human physiology or mentality like how there isnt much of a difference between a 16 year old and a 18 to 19 year old and that is the reason why the romeo and juliet law exist and that they never went to high school because alot of 18 to 19 year olds actually had sex with people 2 to 3 years younger than them infact it's normal and happens all the time especially when your grandparents where in school. Also zero never had sex with someone under the age of 18 so yea.

So as an outsider i can say, if you jump around screaming after winning, it can come of as respectless and provocating.
But i think, if you can see that his joy is genuine, and if he doesn't get in the face of the loser and says something like "suck on that" or something, i think its okay.
But you have to remember, if both sides are REALLY stressed out about winning the fight, and then the winner suddenly explodes and screams, the other person is even more defeated, because it crushes them after, you have to always consider that.
But if you are the most hated Player, there is undoubtly some big weight on you so...
