    EDIT: It was brought to my attention that Polish's pronouns are they/them, I had no idea, just wanted to let everyone know out of respect for them.
    EDIT 2: Cody was signed to Noun eSports on March 1st, 2024!!!
    Once again a huge thank you for Cody for doing the interview and my friends who have helped with creating this doc (All of their socials are in the description)
    This has been in the works since early November 2023 LOL, after some copyright claims, WiFi going out when I was trying to upload it, it's finally here. I hope it is worth the wait and here is to more documentaries in the future! I plan to make more Melee documentaries as well, so don't forget to subscribe haha

    HEY! That's me! I ran that first upstate NY regional Cody showed up to at 18:15. We all remembered that tournament for a long time because nobody knew who Cody was and he beat and then went last game with 2 of the best players in the region that had ran things for like ten years at the time (Pikapika! and Themanalord) and then the one he didn't beat, he beat him in a runback at the next event he mentioned a couple months later.
    It's always amazing to see such incredible talent come home grown straight outta Rochester NY

    An absolute behemoth of a documentary that left no stone overturned as far as I'm aware. My only main gripe, as some others have pointed out in these comments, is pacing and by extension, video length. There were many instances where the script felt like it needed to repeat certain keywords or dates or add in sentence fragments to meet some arbitrary quota. You could probably prune 25%-40% of this runtime with more revisions and not cut out any important details. A smaller nitpick I had is about inflection and delivery. This could tie in with the final version of the script being longer than it probably should've ended up and thus, affecting the recording process, but there were plenty of times where you go too monotone, which takes away some amount of impact the section of story you're telling has. That said, I found the audio mixing and song selection particularly well done, so props for that.
    If you do decide to make another documentary about Melee, I would gladly watch. Cheers! (:

    First got the vid recommended today and I'm so glad Cody finally got a sponsor again. Honestly, I didn't really watch Melee unless it was an M2K set until the post quarantine era, and the "new guard" of players is to thank for that, but mostly Cody. I watched his streams of other games a couple of times before even watching his Melee gameplay and he was just such a kind and chill person that he unintentionally made me start seriously spectating Melee for the first time in my life. This new guard (the way I use it is directly incorrect because these players have been competing for almost a decade, but I don't know what the proper term would be for players that have been playing for a long time, but have had a boom of dominance in the most recent couple of years in whatever the current time would be in the situation) reinvigorated new life into spectating Melee for me and I've loved seeing the storylines develop. Of course, there's the massive Zain vs Cody rivalry, but this guard for me consists of four players. Zain, Cody, aMSa, and Jmook have all been playing for so long, but the past two years have been dominated by them. There were still some old guard (pre 2015) players who won a few tournaments such as Hbox, Mango, and the worst person in FGC history that isn't either a criminal or predator, Leffen, but 2022 and 2023 were the years where the four big guys rose to the most dominant they've ever been.

    great video, amazing job covering so much history, just one note:
    tightening up your script is really important; you probably could have cut over half an hour off the runtime without losing any information by just removing redundant phrasing or repeated statements and cleaning up unnecessarily long sentences (the ratio of [words] to [information] got really bad a few times, which I couldn't understand because there is clearly no need to pad for time)

    Smash Summit 8 may be the biggest butterfly effect for Melee competitively
    -Cody goes 0-3 in pools and at Smash Summit 9 that same year introduced a system where last place is eliminated before the Final Bracket on Sunday, but for 8 he gets to continue on
    -Moky SDing in the lead of Game 1 gave Cody the counter advantage/momentum
    -Overcoming his eventual demon in Mango when it mattered most
    -Beginning his dominance against aMSa and Hbox
    The Summit 9 fact is the most shocking, cause it would have all but certainly ended his career. If not for the low placing and payout, it'd be because he got bopped by players like Spud and Ginger. If any of these scenarios play out differently, it's likely Cody leaves for that degree and 2022/2023 look much different

    loved the vid, the interview was great and you swung really wide to cover a lot most people didn’t know about! one piece of criticism is have is the length tho, I understand that you wanted to cover most to everything but if you just go over tournaments recounting what happend on paper it doesn’t make for the most engaging content. A lot of times you were just counting things like „cody played X and went 3-0, then Cody went on to fight y“ it’s just a bit dull for such a long video and you could’ve either tried to add more color or be more decisive in which sets you wanna mention. IBDW is a bit of misc bag from me. He doesn’t have the same charisma as many other Top players he has a habit of being a little too whiny and virtue signally but I do believe he’s a good guy and seems a lot more mature than before. I understand why he’s a pretty divisive when compared to say Zain but he’s an incredible player and I hope he keeps up the good shit

    • @compromisedssh
      @compromisedssh 6 месяцев назад +3

      Cody has anti-charisma, if such a thing exists. There's nothing unlucky about him not being sponsored. He's so toxic and untouchable that he only has himself to blame. Sponsors will typically overlook all kinds of flaws to associate themselves with greatness, but between iBDW's twitter meltdowns and his inability to make a brand look good, it's not at all surprising that he finds himself in the situation he's in. That being said, his skill as a Fox player is unprecedented and undeniable.

    • @AsteriskStar1
      @AsteriskStar1 6 месяцев назад +4

      @@compromisedsshbut this logic doesn’t really make sense. He got signed to Panda and CLG. Those orgs broke down for their own reasons so he was forced to leave. I think the biggest issue is that there isn’t a new Tier 1 org interested in smash anymore.

    • @compromisedssh
      @compromisedssh 6 месяцев назад +3

      @@AsteriskStar1 it makes perfect sense. Panda didn't ditch iBDW (which he was going by at the time). Cody made a deliberate decision to leave. The guy running Panda didn't stop being a millionaire because the people placing well in Smash tournaments decided that they stopped wanting his money. In fact, the org bent over backward to make sure they honored their commitments. This is another example of Cody being unsponsored because of things he did. In any case, you still have a valid point about money being more prevalent in the scene before the past six months or so. Everyone else in the top 10 is sponsored though. I don't feel like you're making irrelevant points, but I also don't see how they conflict with what I said in any way. To be more concise, my main point is: Cody has only himself to blame for not being sponsored (and luck doesn't factor in).

      A point of pride for me is how cool so many ppl who are into melee are. And that’s reflected in large part in the top players. Some of my favorites are ppl like Mango, Plup, Moky, Zain. Even outside of top players, ppl like Lud and Slime. Ppl like Scar Toph HMW Phil. (And so many more.) So to have our game represented with its top player being Cody is kind of a bummer for me. The saving grace is that his gameplay is cracked af and he’s given us some of the hypest sets, like the ones against Zain Mango Amsa. So yeah, it’s not how’d I choose it, but I guess it could be worse

    Cody has to be hardest working Smash player EVER. Nothing was easy for him, but he pulled through. I'm not sure there was ever someone more deserving of the title of #1 in the world.

      He is definitely up there with aMSa, Zain, moky and others for the most hard working in terms of getting better with Melee. I do agree with you that he deserved his title of #1 in the world for his impressive 2023 and all the hardships he overcame in his life

    great video, the audio and writing need help doe!
    I mean this with sincerity and no hate.
    The audio levels between you and cody is not good, I had to keep increasing volume when you talked and decrease when anyone else talked or music for a montage played.
    The writing has so many loose ends and is overall too slow paced and repeats a lot.

    1:42:09 idk why Cody thought the reverse pop off was a good idea to, in his words, rob him of the pop off… like what kind of guy robs someone of a celebration of a tournament they won, even if the other guy pops off when he wins, not when the other guy wins. Cringe if Cody and just a bad choice

    I went from an absolute cody hater to, I think, a fan. While I dont like seeing him win tournaments most of the time I at least can respect the ahrd work he has done, not just with melee but his personal life. During 2021 till like early-mid 2023 he just seemed unhappy and the reverse pop-off on hbox just made me really dislike him, not that I am a massive hbox fan or anything it was just kinda weird. But then something changed and he started having fun again and laughing while playing. Mainstage 2022 was the first time I, sort of, wanted to see him win. Had it not been against mango I might have actually been cheering for him. Then salty suite was hilarious at apex was gold. Then the insane losers run at SSC. I think thats when I came full circle to seeing how much he has changed. I still think his fox is boring for being so optimized and damn near TAS level, but I do think he belongs in the era of the new gods.

      @@John-nk3ej Singular 'they' has been in use since the late 1300s, and prominent writers such as William Shakespeare used it. Its use is deemed 'correct' by Oxford University and Merriam-Webster, the two biggest dictionaries for the English language.
      If you wanna be really nitpicky, you'd be arguing that singular 'you' is not grammatically correct and that we should be using the word 'thou' instead even though singular 'you' has been in use for about as long as singular 'they', but I don't see you doing that...
